The Scarecrow quest is one of the most tragic side quests in Valor Mortis. You find a man strapped to a post in the middle of a field like a scarecrow — armless, still alive, unable to die. He needs to find peace, and that means tracking down two things that mattered to him.
The quest isn’t hard, but the letter and pendant are easy to miss if you’re pushing through the level at pace. This guide shows exactly where both are.

How to Start The Scarecrow Quest in Valor Mortis
The quest starts in the Fallen Village during Chapter 3: Rendezvous. You can pick it up almost immediately after entering the area — it’s one of the first things you encounter.
From the Fields Lantern, follow the path forward into the open field. You’ll see a blue memory flash and, ahead of you, a man strapped to a wooden post in the middle of the field — arms gone, still breathing, surrounded by crows.
Interact with him. He can’t move, can’t die, and can’t rest until you find what belongs to him. You can interact multiple times to get more detail on what you’re looking for. The quest begins.
Lover’s Pendant Location in Valor Mortis
This one is close. You don’t need to go far at all.
From the scarecrow himself, turn and look toward the large tree just behind him. Head down the right path toward it. At the base of the tree, you’ll find a dead soldier slumped on the ground. The Lover’s Pendant is lying next to the body.
Pick it up. Then head back to the scarecrow and interact with him to hand it over. He reacts, but the quest isn’t finished yet — he needs the letter too.
Letter with a Drawing Location in Valor Mortis

This one takes a bit more work. You’ll need to keep progressing through the level to reach it.
Continue forward through the Fallen Village — past the barn, past the open fields with haystacks. You’ll eventually hit a group of four human enemies in an area with tall haystacks. They can come at you fast, so clear them at your own pace.
Just past that group of enemies, look for a path going up the hill to the left. Follow it up and enter the house at the top.
The front doors may be locked from the outside, so approach from the back. Inside, head upstairs. On the table on the top floor, in the darkness, you’ll find a piece of paper — the Letter with a Drawing.
Read it. The letter mentions a meeting point: “the old shed where the black crows keep watch.” That detail matters for the final step. Unbolt the front door while you’re up there — it creates a shortcut back to the earlier part of the level.
You may be coming through this area after the Marketplace Lantern on your way back. If so, follow the path back through the carriage where you found the Blunderbuss, past the explosive horse corpses, and the house is up the hill from there.
How to Complete The Scarecrow Quest – Follow the Crows
With both items in hand, return to the scarecrow in the field and interact with him to give him the Lover’s Pendant and the Letter with a Drawing.
A short moment passes. Then the crows surrounding him lift off and fly away — toward the center of the village.
Don’t stop here. The quest isn’t done yet.
Follow the Crows to the Barn
Watch where the crows are circling. They’ll gather above a specific small building near the edge of town — a barn. Head in that direction, dealing with any enemies in your way.
Find the ledge that leads up into the top level of the barn. Jump up to reach it and head inside.
Interact with the Bed
Inside the upper level of the barn, you’ll find a bed with two pillows. Watch the vision that appears as you approach. Then interact with the bed to complete the quest.
The man finally rests. The crows scatter.
Bountiful Harvest Amber – What It Does
Completing The Scarecrow quest rewards you with the Bountiful Harvest Amber.
This Amber is tied to Nephtoglobin Remnants — the small resource drops that enemies release when hit with Stasis Transmutation. Normally, Nephtoglobin Remnants just restore your Nephtoglobin bar. With the Bountiful Harvest Amber equipped, those same drops also heal your HP.
It’s a niche Amber that pays off specifically for players building around Stasis Transmutation. If you’re hitting enemies with Stasis regularly, Bountiful Harvest turns your offensive Nephtoglobin play into a source of passive healing too — which is genuinely powerful in longer fights.
For general combat builds, it’s less impactful. But for a Stasis or Transmutation-focused run, it earns its slot.
To build around Transmutations effectively, check our Valor Mortis all transmutation abilities location guide.
Tips for The Scarecrow Quest
- Interact with the scarecrow multiple times at the start — each interaction gives you more lore about who he was and who he was waiting for.
- The pendant is right there — don’t overlook the tree immediately behind the scarecrow. It’s closer than it seems.
- The letter house is locked from the front — approach from the back path through the level rather than trying the front doors.
- Unbolt the front door while you’re in the house — it saves backtracking time and connects back to an earlier section of the level.
- Don’t leave after giving the items — the quest has a final step. Follow the crows to the barn and interact with the bed upstairs or the quest won’t complete.
- Clear enemies on the way to the barn — the crows fly toward a busier part of the village. Don’t get ambushed while you’re navigating there.
The Story Behind the Quest
The Scarecrow quest tells a quiet story without ever directly spelling it out. The man strapped to the post had a lover, a place they used to meet, and a life before the Nephtoglobin plague tore everything apart. His arms are gone, he can’t die, and crows watch over him — whether as tormentors or guardians isn’t clear.
When you find the pendant and the letter, you learn that he and his lover were supposed to meet in the old barn. The crows take him there when he finally lets go. The vision in the barn shows what might have been.
It’s the kind of storytelling Valor Mortis does well — heavy atmosphere, minimal dialogue, and an ending that lands without overselling it.

Frequently Asked Questions – Valor Mortis The Scarecrow Quest
Where does The Scarecrow quest start in Valor Mortis?
In the Fallen Village during Chapter 3. From the Fields Lantern, follow the path forward into the open field and interact with the man strapped to the wooden post surrounded by crows.
Where is the Lover’s Pendant in Valor Mortis?
It’s right behind the scarecrow. From the post, head toward the large tree down the right path. At the base of the tree, a dead soldier is slumped on the ground with the Lover’s Pendant beside them.
Where is the Letter with a Drawing in Valor Mortis?
Continue through the level past the haystack area with four enemies. Look for a path going up the hill to the left and enter the house at the top. The Letter with a Drawing is on a table on the second floor, in the darkness upstairs.
What do I do after giving the items to the scarecrow in Valor Mortis?
The crows fly off toward a specific barn in the village. Follow them. Find the ledge leading up to the top level of that barn, go inside, and interact with the bed. That’s the final step of the quest.
What is the reward for The Scarecrow quest in Valor Mortis?
You receive the Bountiful Harvest Amber. When equipped, Nephtoglobin Remnants dropped by enemies affected by Stasis Transmutation will also restore your HP in addition to your Nephtoglobin bar.
Can you miss The Scarecrow quest in Valor Mortis?
It doesn’t appear to be permanently missable — you can return to the Fallen Village later to complete it. That said, starting it early and finishing it while you’re already in the area is the most efficient approach, since all the items and the barn are all within the same zone.
Is the Bountiful Harvest Amber worth using in Valor Mortis?
It depends on your build. If you’re using Stasis Transmutation regularly, it adds meaningful healing on top of your Nephtoglobin recovery and is worth equipping. For melee or firearms-focused builds that rarely use Stasis, other Ambers will offer more consistent value.
