- TL;DR
- The Great Vault resets every Tuesday (NA) / Wednesday (EU) and gives you up to 9 reward options — but you only pick one.
- Three rows: Raid, Dungeon (Mythic+), and World. Each needs 2, 4, or 8 completions to unlock its three slots.
- Season 2’s biggest Vault change: Heroic raid clears now give Myth 1/6 (item level 318) from the Vault — one full track above the direct drop.
- Mythic+ Vault caps at Myth 1/6 (item level 318) from +10. Going above +10 improves score and rating, not Vault quality.
- World row caps at Hero 1/6 (item level 305) from Tier 8+ Delves — no Myth-track rewards from the World row.
- New in Season 2: take a Nebulous Voidcore instead of an item. Bonus rolls now cost 1 Voidcore (down from 2) and award gear one tier above the difficulty you cleared.
- Raid boss loot pools are permanent once unlocked — kill a boss once and it stays in your Vault pool for the whole season.
- Never spend Mistcrests or Catalyst charges before opening the Vault. You might replace that slot for free.
- Tier-set pieces can drop from any Vault row — Raid, Dungeon, and World slots all have a chance.
What Is the Great Vault?
Great Vault explained — this is the complete guide to WoW Midnight’s most important weekly reward system. The Great Vault is a loot chest that resets with each server maintenance: every Tuesday at 3 PM PST for North American servers, every Wednesday at 4 AM UTC for European servers. Each week you fill up to three rows by completing content — raids, Mythic+ dungeons, and world activities. At reset, you open the Vault, look at every option across all unlocked slots, and choose exactly one item to keep. The rest disappear until next week.
It sounds simple. But the Great Vault is also the most misunderstood system in WoW Midnight Season 2, and the mistakes players make with it cost them weeks of progression. This guide explains every rule, every item level, and every decision point so that you never waste a Vault slot or spend a currency you should have saved. If you are building your weekly routine around the Vault, the WoW Midnight Season 2 weekly to-do checklist covers the full activity priority order around each reset. You can also track any patch changes that might affect reward quality on the official World of Warcraft website.
Where Is the Great Vault Located?
The Great Vault is physically located inside the bank in Silvermoon City’s neutral zone — accessible by both Alliance and Horde characters from the same entrance. You must visit it in person to open it and choose your reward. You can preview your available options remotely through the Group Finder (press I) → Dungeons tab, which shows your current unlock progress and what rewards are waiting. But the actual claiming and choosing must be done at the Vault itself in Silvermoon.
This matters more than it sounds. Do not log in after reset, upgrade a piece of gear with Mistcrests, and then travel to the Vault — you may have just upgraded a slot that the Vault was about to upgrade for free. The golden rule of every weekly reset: open the Vault first, spend currencies after.
The Three Vault Rows
The Great Vault has three independent rows. Each row tracks different content and rewards different item levels. Each row can hold up to three slot options, unlocked by completing 2, 4, or 8 eligible activities within that row’s category during the previous week. Here is exactly how each row works.
Row 1 — Raid Row
The Raid row is filled by killing bosses in The Venomous Abyss and other eligible raid content during the week. You need to kill bosses at threshold counts to unlock each slot:
- Kill 2 raid bosses: 1 Vault raid choice unlocked.
- Kill 5 raid bosses: 2 Vault raid choices unlocked.
- Kill 8 raid bosses: 3 Vault raid choices unlocked — the weekly target for most raiders.
Season 2’s Biggest Vault Change — Raid Rewards Upgraded by One Track
This is the most important change Blizzard made to the Great Vault in Season 2 and it is not obvious from the UI. Raid Vault rewards are now one full difficulty track above the difficulty you cleared. Here is what that means in practice:
- Raid Finder kills → Champion 1/6 Vault reward (item level 295)
- Normal kills → Hero 1/6 Vault reward (item level 305)
- Heroic kills → Myth 1/6 Vault reward (item level 318)
- Mythic kills → Myth 6/6 Vault reward (item level 334)
- Very Rare items and final two Venomous Abyss bosses → Myth 9/6 equivalent (can reach item level 344 — the seasonal ceiling)
This change makes Heroic raiding the most accessible route to Myth-track gear in the game. Every Heroic lockout feeds a Myth 1/6 Vault slot at 318 item level, making Heroic Venomous Abyss worth clearing every single week for the entire season — even for players in Mythic progression who already outgear it on direct drops.
The Loot Pool Rule — Kill Once, Stay in Pool Forever
This is the most important mechanic of the Raid row and most players do not know it. Once you kill a boss at a specific difficulty, that boss’s loot table stays unlocked for your Vault for the entire season. It does not reset weekly.
Here is a practical example. You kill all eight Venomous Abyss bosses on Heroic in Week 1. In Week 6, you only kill two bosses. Your single unlocked Vault slot can still roll loot from any of the eight bosses — including the last boss — because you killed them all at that difficulty earlier in the season. This means early-season depth clears have long-term value far beyond the week they happen.
The same rule applies to joining a raid already in progress. If you join a group that has already cleared bosses 1 through 5 and you personally kill bosses 6, 7, and 8 — your loot pool includes all eight bosses for Vault purposes, even the ones you personally did not kill that week. Killing a boss out of order while joining mid-run works exactly the same way. Practical advice: push as deep into the Venomous Abyss as you can at the highest difficulty you can reach at least once early in the season. After that, filling the Raid row becomes flexible because your pool is already wide.
Tidebound Grotto and the Raid Row
The Tidebound Grotto Lair boss — Nymrissa Wavecaller — also contributes to your Raid row. It is tracked separately from the Venomous Abyss, so killing Nymrissa does not count as one of your eight Venomous Abyss kills. However, her loot unlocks separately in your Vault pool without requiring you to kill any Venomous Abyss boss at all. If you have only cleared the Tidebound Grotto this week and no raid bosses, the Lair still contributes loot eligibility to the Raid row.
Row 2 — Dungeon Row (Mythic+)
The Dungeon row is the most reliable Vault row for consistent high-quality rewards. It is filled by completing Heroic dungeons, Mythic 0 runs, Mythic+ keys, and Timewalking dungeons. You need these completions to unlock each slot:
- Complete 1 eligible dungeon: 1 Vault dungeon choice unlocked.
- Complete 4 eligible dungeons: 2 Vault dungeon choices unlocked.
- Complete 8 eligible dungeons: 3 Vault dungeon choices unlocked — the weekly target.
Mythic+ Vault Item Level Table
The Vault reward quality for the Dungeon row scales with the highest key level you completed that week, not the average. Run one +10 and seven +4 keys, and all three Vault dungeon slots still reflect the +10 reward. Here are the key thresholds that matter most:
- +2 to +3: Vault rewards Champion-track gear. End-of-dungeon chest also drops Champion gear.
- +4: Vault rewards Champion 2/6. End-of-dungeon chest shifts to Hero-track gear.
- +5: Vault rewards Hero 1/6 (item level 305).
- +6: Vault rewards Hero 2/6 (item level 308).
- +7: Vault rewards Hero 3/6 (item level 311).
- +8: Vault rewards Hero 4/6 (item level 314).
- +9: Vault rewards Hero 5/6 (item level 315). Myth Mistcrests begin dropping from the end-of-dungeon chest.
- +10: Vault rewards Myth 1/6 (item level 318). End-of-dungeon chest drops item level 311. This is the weekly Vault ceiling for Mythic+.
- +11 and above: Vault quality does not increase beyond Myth 1/6. Higher keys improve your Raider.IO score, seasonal rating, and key resilience — not item level.
The takeaway is clear. The +10 key is your weekly power target. Complete one +10 and it sets the Vault ceiling for all three dungeon slots. Then run seven more keys at whatever level is most efficient for your group — you only need completions, not additional +10 runs, to fill the remaining two Vault slots. For a full guide on which dungeons to prioritize in Season 2 and the best group comps to run them, our Season 2 Mythic+ Dungeon Tier List ranks all eight keys in the current pool.
The Dungeon Loot Pool Rule
Unlike the Raid row, the Dungeon row does not remember which specific dungeons you ran this week. Dungeon Vault slots draw from the full Season 2 Mythic+ dungeon pool — all eight dungeons — regardless of which ones you actually completed. Running the same dungeon eight times does not increase your chance of getting loot from that specific dungeon. Your eight completions unlock the slots; the loot pools is always the full rotation.
Row 3 — World Row
The World row is the most flexible of the three. It accepts a wider variety of content than either the Raid or Dungeon rows, making it the primary progression path for solo players and a reliable supplement for players who already complete the other two rows. Eligible activities include:
- Delves (all tiers)
- Prey Hunts (all difficulties)
- Zone events and Void Assaults
- Weekly quests and Assignments
- Coiled Isle activities and world quests
- Tidebound Grotto Lair on World difficulty
You need these completions to unlock each slot:
- Complete 2 eligible activities: 1 Vault world choice unlocked.
- Complete 4 eligible activities: 2 Vault world choices unlocked.
- Complete 8 eligible activities: 3 Vault world choices unlocked.
World Row Item Level — The Quality Mix Rule
The World row’s Vault quality is influenced by the mix of activities you complete. This is the rule that catches most players out. Do your highest-value World activities first, before filling remaining slots with lower-value outdoor content. Here is why.
The Vault interface gives each World slot a quality based on the activities that contributed to it. If you complete two Tier 8 Delves and six basic World Quests, your three World Vault slots reflect an average quality that pulls downward from the basic activities. The optimal strategy: complete the highest-value activities first — Tier 8 Bountiful Delves and Nightmare Prey Hunts — and then fill remaining slots with outdoor World Quests. Check the Vault tooltip before stopping your weekly World content to confirm the expected reward quality matches what you are aiming for.
World Row Item Level Caps
- Basic world quests and low-tier Delves: Champion-track Vault rewards. Very limited value mid-season.
- Tier 8 Delves and Nightmare Prey: Hero 1/6 Vault reward at item level 305. This is the published World row ceiling for Season 2.
- Tiers 9–11 Delves: Do not increase the Vault item level beyond Hero 1/6. Higher Delve tiers add Mistcrests, Gilded Stashes, and Delver’s Journey points — but not a better Vault World slot.
The World row cannot produce Myth-track Vault rewards. The maximum from this row is Hero 1/6 at item level 305 — meaningful and worth unlocking every week, but significantly below what the Raid and Dungeon rows provide at their ceilings.
Tier-Set Pieces Can Drop From Any Row
This is the most underused feature of the Great Vault and one Blizzard added specifically to make the tier-set assembly process more accessible. Any Vault slot — Raid, Dungeon, or World — can roll a Season 2 class-set piece. You do not need to raid to get tier gear from your Vault. A solo player who only runs Delves and Prey Hunts can still receive a tier-set piece from their World row Vault slot.
The practical implication: even if your World row slots are at a lower item level than your Raid and Dungeon slots, always look at all three rows before choosing. A tier piece at Hero 1/6 that completes your 4-set bonus is almost certainly worth choosing over a non-tier piece at Myth 1/6 — the set bonus power more than compensates the item level gap in most scenarios. Only skip a tier-set Vault option if you already have that specific piece at higher item level with the same set bonus, or if a significantly better non-tier item in a slot you genuinely need more is available.
The Nebulous Voidcore — Season 2’s New Vault Option
Season 2 introduced a completely new fallback choice inside the Great Vault: the Nebulous Voidcore. Instead of choosing any of the gear options from your unlocked slots, you can take a Voidcore as your weekly Vault reward. The Voidcore is then spent on targeted bonus rolls outside the Vault entirely.
How to Unlock the Voidcore Option
The Nebulous Voidcore option appears in the Great Vault only when you have unlocked at least three Vault slots across any combination of rows. Important: this option was not available from the first Season 2 Vault reset (August 18/19). Blizzard confirmed it became available starting the August 25/26 reset. From that week onward it is available every week as long as you maintain three unlocked slots.
How Bonus Rolls Work With Voidcores
A Nebulous Voidcore is spent after completing eligible content — specifically Venomous Abyss raid bosses, Mythic+ keys, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare Prey Hunts. After finishing the activity, a bonus roll window appears. The item you receive comes from that activity’s loot pool and is based on your current Loot Specialization — always check your spec is set correctly before spending a Voidcore.
Here is the critical part that makes Voidcores so valuable in Season 2: bonus rolls award gear one full difficulty tier above the content you cleared.
- Coin a Normal raid boss → receive a Hero 1/6 item from that boss.
- Coin a Heroic raid boss → receive a Myth 1/6 (item level 318) item from that boss.
- Coin a Mythic raid boss → receive a Myth 6/6 item. Final two bosses and Very Rare items can reach Myth 9/6 equivalent at item level 344.
- Coin a Mythic+ key → receive an item matching the Vault quality for that key level.
Bonus rolls cost 1 Nebulous Voidcore per roll — down from 2 in Season 1. This reduction doubled the number of rolls available from each Voidcore and makes them significantly more accessible than last season.
Where to Get Nebulous Voidcores
- Great Vault weekly choice: Take a Voidcore instead of an item when 3+ slots are unlocked. The primary weekly source.
- Orin Straylight in Silvermoon City: Starting from Week 8 of the season, Orin grants one additional free Voidcore per week. His 8-week countdown does not start until you speak with him at the beginning of the season — go talk to him early so his clock is running.
When to Take a Voidcore vs When to Take the Gear
This is the hardest decision the Great Vault presents each week. Here is the honest framework:
Take the gear when:
- The Vault contains a Best-in-Slot weapon, trinket, or ring that a bonus roll cannot reliably target.
- The Vault contains the tier-set piece that completes your 2-set or 4-set bonus.
- It is early in the season (weeks 1 through 4) and almost anything is an upgrade. Take the guaranteed item. Early-season Voidcores are rarely more valuable than a direct gear piece.
- A specific Vault slot contains a piece significantly better than anything you could reasonably roll from current content.
Take the Voidcore when:
- Every Vault option is something you already own at equal or higher item level.
- The Vault contains three versions of disappointment — wrong slots, wrong stats, nothing you need.
- You know exactly which boss drops a specific item you need and can spend the Voidcore on that targeted roll. Bonus-rolling a Heroic boss for a Myth 1/6 item from a specific loot pool is often more efficient than accepting a random Vault item in mid-season gearing.
The key insight from Week 1 of Season 2 live data: the Venomous Abyss is the best Voidcore target in the game because raid bonus rolls award gear one tier above the difficulty cleared. A single Voidcore on a Heroic Venomous Abyss boss produces a Myth 1/6 item from a specific targeted loot pool — often more valuable than the random Myth 1/6 item sitting in your Dungeon Vault slot. Later in the season when you have specific best-in-slot targets in mind, this comparison becomes even clearer.
The Deck-Thinning Strategy
As mid-season approaches, experienced players use Voidcores to “thin the deck” of each boss’s loot table. When you bonus roll a specific item and receive it, that item is removed from future rolls on that boss. This means three targeted rolls on the same boss can guarantee three different specific pieces over time — progressively increasing the chance that future boss kills drop what you actually want from the remaining pool. Research each boss’s loot table before spending a Voidcore — a boss with a weapon slot you cover through crafting or an off-hand you never use is a risky Voidcore target regardless of its other items.
The Thalassian Token Alternative
You are never forced to take a piece of gear or a Voidcore from your Great Vault. A third option exists: Thalassian Tokens of Merit. Six Tokens can buy a Miasmic Jewelbinder for a socket, but the vendor also sells other items. Tokens have a hard inventory cap of 12 — if your bags are full of tokens and you receive more, the overflow is lost. The vendor choice is most valuable when a specific socket target or a vendor item fills a precise gap in your character better than any of the gear options in the Vault that week. This is a niche case but worth knowing so you never feel forced into a bad gear pick.

Six Mistakes That Waste Your Vault Every Week
Mistake 1 — Spending Mistcrests Before Opening the Vault
This is the costliest weekly mistake. You upgrade a slot Monday evening with Mistcrests. Tuesday reset comes and the Vault has a better version of that exact slot sitting there waiting. You just spent 80 Mistcrests to upgrade a piece you replaced for free 12 hours later. The rule never changes: open the Vault before spending any currency. No exceptions.
Mistake 2 — Automatically Taking the Highest Item Level Option
The Vault gives you up to nine options. The highest item level choice is not automatically the right choice. Before clicking anything, ask these three questions: Is there a tier-set piece? Does this complete or advance a set bonus? Is there a socket on an item in a slot where I will keep it for many weeks? A 305 item-level tier piece that completes your 4-set is almost always worth more than a 318 item-level non-tier piece in the same slot. Look at all your options before deciding.
Mistake 3 — Ignoring the World Row
Players who primarily raid or run Mythic+ often skip filling the World row because it feels like extra work. This is wrong. The World row also has a chance to produce tier-set pieces, and Hero 1/6 at item level 305 from Tier 8 Delves is a meaningful reward for very little time investment. Eight Delves or Prey Hunts spread across the week takes around two hours total and unlocks three additional Vault slots. Even one of those three rolling a tier piece can save multiple weeks of Catalyst and raid grinding.
Mistake 4 — Taking a Voidcore in Early Season Weeks
In weeks 1 through 4, almost everything in the game is an upgrade for your character. Taking a Nebulous Voidcore instead of a guaranteed direct piece of gear is almost never the right call early in the season. Save the Voidcore strategy for mid-season when your specific remaining upgrade targets are clear and the random Vault options are things you already own at higher item level.
Mistake 5 — Filling the World Row With Low-Value Activities First
The World row quality is influenced by the mix of activities you complete. Do your Tier 8 Delves and Nightmare Prey Hunts first, then fill the remaining World row slots with World Quests and outdoor activities. Filling World Quests first and running your Delves last does not automatically hurt quality if you still complete the Delves — but if you stop for the week after only basic activities, your Vault quality suffers. Check the Vault tooltip to confirm what you will receive before stopping World content for the week.
Mistake 6 — Pushing Past +10 to Improve Vault Quality
It does not work. The Vault Dungeon row caps at Myth 1/6 (item level 318) from completing a +10 key. A +13, +15, or +18 key gives the same Vault quality as a +10. Going higher than +10 earns you Raider.IO score, a higher rating, and progression toward seasonal mounts and the Venomous Hero title — but zero additional item levels in your Vault. If you are skipping sleep to hit +14 this week because you think the Vault reward will be better, it will not be.
Great Vault Strategy by Playstyle
Raiders
Your priority is maximizing the Raid row quality. Push as deep into The Venomous Abyss as you can at Heroic difficulty at least once early in the season — the loot pool stays unlocked for the rest of the year. After that, simply kill 8 bosses each week at the highest difficulty you can access to maintain all three Raid Vault slots. Add 8 Mythic+ keys at +10 for the Dungeon row, and fill the World row with Tier 8 Delves for the third tier-set eligibility. For a full boss-by-boss guide to The Venomous Abyss, see our Venomous Abyss Raid Guide for Season 2.
Mythic+ Pushers
Your priority is the Dungeon row. Complete 8 keys at +10 to fill all three Dungeon Vault slots at Myth 1/6. Add enough raid boss kills to unlock 2 or 3 Raid row slots — even 5 Normal bosses give you two Vault raid choices, and those can roll tier pieces. Use the World row to fill the third tier-set eligibility window efficiently through Tier 8 Delves alongside your key schedule.
Solo and Casual Players
Your priority is the World row through Tier 8 Delves and Nightmare Prey. Hero 1/6 at item level 305 from the World row ceiling is accessible entirely through solo content. Add at least 1 Mythic+ key (even at +5) to unlock the first Dungeon Vault slot, and kill at least 2 raid bosses on Normal for the first Raid row slot. The Catalyst is your primary tier-set path — use it to convert your highest-item-level gear into tier pieces since solo content tier rolls from the Vault are less predictable than organized raiding. For the full picture on endgame progression, our WoW Midnight endgame guide covers every system available at level 90.
The Catalyst — Vault’s Best Companion System
The Catalyst converts eligible Season 2 armor pieces into class-set items. It is the most reliable non-RNG path to tier gear and pairs directly with the Great Vault system. The rules for Catalyst use:
- Catalyst charges accumulate weekly and do not expire. You can save them for the right piece.
- The converted piece inherits the secondary stats and item level of the source item. A higher item-level source produces a better tier piece. Never convert weak pieces.
- Converted pieces keep their cantrips.
- Check your Vault and major loot drops before spending a Catalyst charge. If the Vault might give you a better source piece for the same slot, wait until after Vault selection to use the Catalyst on your current piece.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many items can I get from the Great Vault per week?
You can choose exactly one item, Nebulous Voidcore, or Thalassian Token reward from the Vault per week. The Vault generates up to nine options across three rows based on your weekly activities, but you only pick one of those options. The rest disappear at the next reset.
Do I have to kill all raid bosses every week to maintain my loot pool?
No. Once you kill a boss at a specific difficulty, that boss’s loot stays in your Vault pool for the entire season. You do not need to re-kill it every week. After your first full clear at Heroic or Mythic, simply filling the boss count threshold (2, 5, or 8 kills) each week is enough to unlock Vault slots — your pool stays wide regardless of which specific bosses you kill that week.
Does running the same Mythic+ dungeon multiple times improve my Vault?
No. The Dungeon Vault row draws from the full Season 2 dungeon pool regardless of which dungeons you actually completed. Running Altar of Fangs eight times gives you the same loot pool as running eight different dungeons. Your eight completions unlock the slots. The pool is always all eight dungeons.
What is a Nebulous Voidcore and when should I take one?
A Nebulous Voidcore is a targeted bonus roll currency available as an alternative Vault reward starting from three unlocked slots (available from the August 25/26 reset onward). It lets you spend a roll on specific eligible content rather than accepting the random Vault item. Take a Voidcore when every gear option in your Vault is something you already own at equal or better item level. Take the gear when the Vault has a tier piece completing a set bonus, a Best-in-Slot weapon or trinket, or any major upgrade early in the season.
Can I get tier-set gear from the World row of the Great Vault?
Yes. Any Vault slot — Raid, Dungeon, or World row — can roll a class-set piece. You do not need to raid to receive tier gear from the Great Vault. This makes filling the World row every week worth doing even for solo players who never touch raid content.
Does my Vault quality improve from running keys above +10?
No. The Dungeon Vault row caps at Myth 1/6 (item level 318) from +10 keys. Keys above +10 improve your Raider.IO score, seasonal rating, and key resilience — but they do not increase the item level of your Vault reward. A +12 and a +10 give the same Vault quality.
What is the best class to play for Season 2 to make the most of Great Vault gear?
Tier-set strength varies by spec. The specs that benefit most from their Season 2 set bonuses tend to make the strongest case for prioritizing tier-set Vault choices over raw item-level pieces. The Season 2 DPS Tier List for Raids and Mythic+ covers how each spec performs with and without set bonuses, which helps you understand how aggressively to chase tier pieces in your own Vault each week.
