TL;DR
- Xiangling is a free 4-star Pyro Polearm Sub-DPS obtainable by clearing Spiral Abyss Floor 3, Chamber 3.
- She is one of the best off-field Sub-DPS characters in the game — even years after release.
- Her Elemental Burst, Pyronado, deals constant Pyro DMG off-field and snapshots buffs on cast.
- Best artifact set is Emblem of Severed Fate (4-piece); best weapons are The Catch or Engulfing Lightning.
- Always cast Pyronado after Bennett’s Burst to snapshot the ATK buff — this is the most important mechanic to learn.

- She fits into Vaporize, Melt, Overload, and National team compositions with equal effectiveness.
Who Is Xiangling in Genshin Impact?
Xiangling is one of the most beloved characters in Genshin Impact — and one of the most powerful free characters the game has ever offered. She is a 4-star Pyro Polearm user from Liyue, the head chef of the Wanmin Restaurant on Chihu Rock, and the daughter of veteran chef Mao. Her full name is Mao Xiangling, her constellation is Trulla, and her birthday is November 2.
She became playable on September 28, 2020, as one of the game’s original launch characters. More significantly, she is permanently obtainable for free by completing Floor 3, Chamber 3 of the Spiral Abyss — no banner pull required. Despite being a launch-day 4-star, she remains a top-tier off-field damage dealer in the current meta and a core component of some of the strongest team compositions in the game.
In combat, she fights alongside Guoba — her adorable panda companion who breathes fire at nearby enemies — and unleashes the Pyronado, a spinning vortex of flame that orbits your active character and scorches everything in its path. She is available in Genshin Impact on Android, iOS, PlayStation, Epic Games, and Xbox.
Xiangling Character Overview – Stats and Role
Xiangling is an off-field Sub-DPS. She does the vast majority of her damage through Pyronado, which continues applying Pyro to enemies even after she has swapped off the field. This makes her a perfect partner for any main DPS who benefits from consistent Pyro reaction triggering — especially Vaporize and Melt carries.

Xiangling Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- Completely free — permanently obtainable without spending any Primogems
- Among the best off-field Pyro appliers in the entire game
- Pyronado has no internal cooldown, enabling constant Vaporize and Melt triggers
- Pyronado snapshots buffs on cast — getting Bennett’s ATK field guarantees those buffs for the full duration
- Works in an enormous range of team compositions
- Genuinely competitive with 5-star Sub-DPS characters even in late-game content
- Available on all Standard Wish banners for constellation farming
Weaknesses
- High Energy Recharge requirement (180–200%) demands careful artifact and weapon planning
- Guoba cannot be aimed and frequently misses targets — his consistency is unreliable without grouping support
- Completely dependent on her Burst being up — her kit has little off-field value without Pyronado active
- Needs Bennett in most teams to reach her damage ceiling, which limits team flexibility slightly
Xiangling Skills and Abilities
Here is a full breakdown of everything Xiangling can do and how each skill functions in practice.
Normal Attack – Dough-Fu
Xiangling performs up to five consecutive polearm strikes. Her Charged Attack lunges forward and damages enemies along the path. Her Plunging Attack deals AoE DMG on landing. In Sub-DPS builds, her Normal Attacks are rarely used — Xiangling spends almost no time on the field in a well-optimized rotation. This talent is never prioritized for investment.
Elemental Skill – Guoba Attack
Xiangling summons Guoba the panda, who sits in place and breathes continuous fire at nearby enemies, dealing AoE Pyro DMG. Guoba generates one Elemental Particle every time he hits at least one enemy, providing energy toward Xiangling’s Burst. When his duration ends, he disappears and leaves behind a Chili Pepper — picking it up grants the active character a 10% ATK increase for 10 seconds.
Guoba’s biggest drawback is that he cannot be aimed. He targets the nearest enemy automatically, which can cause him to miss in spread-out fights. Using Anemo groupers like Kazuha or Venti to pull enemies into Guoba’s range significantly improves his reliability. The Skill can also be dash-canceled for faster execution in tight rotations.
Elemental Burst – Pyronado
This is the heart of Xiangling’s entire kit. She spins and unleashes a whirling Pyronado — a rotating blade of fire that orbits the current active character and continuously hits all nearby enemies with Pyro DMG. The Pyronado lasts 10 seconds at base and moves with whatever character is on the field, making it seamlessly compatible with any main DPS who stays in melee range.
Two critical mechanics define how Pyronado works:
- Snapshot: Pyronado captures (snapshots) all buffs active on Xiangling at the moment it is cast. ATK buffs from Bennett’s Burst, EM boosts, and other timed effects are locked in for the full Pyronado duration even after those buffs expire. This means casting Pyronado inside Bennett’s Burst field, then swapping off, preserves the full ATK bonus for the entire 10+ seconds — a massive damage multiplier.
- No Internal Cooldown: Each individual swing of Pyronado can trigger an elemental reaction independently. This means every rotation of the Pyronado can Vaporize against a Hydro aura, producing near-constant reaction damage throughout its duration.
The Burst costs 80 Energy, which is why Energy Recharge is Xiangling’s most critical stat.
Passive Talents
- Crossfire (1st Ascension): Increases Guoba’s flame attack range by 20%. A simple but welcome quality-of-life upgrade that makes Guoba hit enemies more reliably without needing as much grouping assistance.
- Beware, It’s Super Hot! (4th Ascension): When Guoba’s duration ends and he leaves a Chili Pepper, picking it up grants the character who grabs it a 10% ATK increase for 10 seconds. A small but free team-wide ATK buff that rewards good rotation timing.
- Chef’s Touch (Utility Passive): When Xiangling cooks an ATK-boosting dish perfectly, she has a 12% chance to receive double the product. Handy for players who cook combat food frequently.
Best Xiangling Build in Genshin Impact
Xiangling is built to maximize her Burst damage. Energy Recharge is always the first priority — she cannot perform without Pyronado being up every rotation. Once ER is covered, ATK%, Pyro DMG Bonus, and CRIT stats push her damage higher.
Sub-DPS Build (Standard – Best)
- Artifact Set: Emblem of Severed Fate (4-piece)
- Sands Main Stat: Energy Recharge (if below 180%) or ATK% (once ER is covered)
- Goblet Main Stat: Pyro DMG Bonus%
- Circlet Main Stat: CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG
- Substat Priority: Energy Recharge (to 180–200%) → CRIT Rate / CRIT DMG → ATK%
Emblem of Severed Fate is the uncontested best-in-slot artifact set for Xiangling. The 2-piece gives 20% Energy Recharge, reducing how much she needs from substats. The 4-piece converts 25% of her Energy Recharge into Elemental Burst DMG, making every point of ER she builds doubly valuable — it both charges her Burst faster and increases how much damage it deals.
Alternative: Crimson Witch of Flames
If you do not have good Emblem of Severed Fate pieces yet, Crimson Witch of Flames is a usable alternative. The 4-piece gives a permanent 15% Pyro DMG Bonus and increases Vaporize damage. However, the Energy Recharge from Emblem’s 2-piece is genuinely valuable and hard to replace from substats alone, so Emblem remains the better investment long-term.
Best Weapons for Xiangling
Xiangling works with an unusually wide range of polearms. The community joke that every new 5-star polearm is somehow good on her is grounded in her flexible scaling. Here are the best options:
- The Catch (4-star, Best F2P Weapon): The single best weapon for most players. Obtained through Liyue fishing at no Primogem cost and refineable to R5 by catching more of the required fish. At R5, it provides substantial Energy Recharge as a substat and increases Elemental Burst DMG by 32% plus Burst CRIT Rate by 12%. This directly powers the two most important aspects of Xiangling’s kit. There is no reason not to get this weapon — it is free and near-BiS.
- Engulfing Lightning (5-star, Best Overall): A premium weapon that provides massive Energy Recharge and converts ER into ATK%. With high ER investment, this weapon gives Xiangling both ER efficiency and a significant ATK bonus, pushing her damage higher than The Catch. Best-in-slot if you own it and are not using it on Raiden Shogun.
- Staff of the Scarlet Sands (5-star): CRIT Rate substat with a passive that converts Elemental Mastery into ATK. In Vaporize teams with high EM substats, this weapon provides excellent ATK scaling from an unusual source. Strong when Xiangling has significant EM built up.
- Wavebreaker’s Fin (4-star): Increases Elemental Burst DMG based on the total energy cost of the whole team’s Bursts. In energy-hungry teams with multiple high-cost Bursts (like National teams), this weapon at high refinement competes with The Catch and even some 5-star options.
- Dragon’s Bane (4-star): Elemental Mastery substat with bonus damage against Hydro- or Pyro-affected enemies. Excellent in pure Vaporize teams where enemies are almost always coated in Hydro. At R5, it competes with high-end 5-star weapons in Vaporize compositions.
- Deathmatch (4-star, Battle Pass): CRIT Rate substat that provides clean CRIT stats, helping Xiangling reach CRIT Rate targets without spending as many substat rolls on it from artifacts.
Best Xiangling Teams in Genshin Impact
Xiangling fits into almost any reaction-based team that needs consistent off-field Pyro application. Here are the strongest compositions.
National Team (The Classic Meta)
Tartaglia (Childe) / Xiangling / Xingqiu / Bennett
This is one of the most famous team compositions in Genshin Impact history and remains competitive years later. Tartaglia applies Hydro on-field with his melee stance while Xiangling’s Pyronado swirls around him constantly triggering Vaporize. Xingqiu adds additional off-field Hydro and damage reduction. Bennett heals and ATK buffs the whole team. Xiangling snapshots Bennett’s Burst before Tartaglia takes the field, ensuring maximum damage throughout the entire Pyronado window.
Bennett-Xiangling Vaporize (Premium)
Kokomi / Xiangling / Kazuha / Bennett
A premium Vaporize team where Kokomi applies Hydro on-field while Pyronado constantly Vaporizes against her aura. Kazuha groups enemies, swirls Pyro for Viridescent Venerer’s 40% Pyro resistance shred, and adds EM or DMG Bonus. Bennett provides the ATK buff that Pyronado snapshots. One of the cleanest and highest-damage Vaporize setups available for Xiangling.
Reverse Melt Team
Ganyu / Xiangling / Bennett / Zhongli
Ganyu fires Frostflake Arrows into the Pyro aura created by Xiangling and Bennett for Reverse Melt. Xiangling’s Pyronado consistently maintains the Pyro aura for Ganyu to Melt through. Zhongli shields Ganyu so she can aim freely. Bennett ATK buffs the team. A powerful team for content requiring single-target damage. For more on this composition see the Ganyu character guide.
Overloaded Team
Raiden Shogun / Xiangling / Xingqiu / Bennett
Raiden applies Electro on-field while Xiangling’s Pyronado triggers Overloaded reactions continuously. Xingqiu adds Hydro for Electro-Charged and Vaporize on Raiden’s attacks. Bennett heals and buffs. A high-energy and explosive team that also benefits from Raiden’s strong Burst refunding energy for all teammates — which helps Xiangling reach her Burst faster each rotation.
F2P Vaporize Team
Xiangling / Xingqiu / Bennett / Fischl or Sucrose
A budget-friendly powerhouse. Xingqiu provides off-field Hydro for constant Vaporize. Bennett heals and ATK buffs. Fischl adds off-field Electro for additional reaction damage, or Sucrose provides grouping and EM buff. All four can be obtained for free or through the Standard banner. This team clears Spiral Abyss comfortably at moderate investment levels and is the go-to recommendation for newer players building their first strong team.

Xiangling Constellations Guide
Xiangling is available on the Standard banner, making her one of the most constellation-accessible 4-stars in the game. Her constellations are strong across the board — here is what each one provides:
- C1 – Crispy Outside, Tender Inside: Enemies hit by Guoba’s attacks have their Pyro RES reduced by 15% for 6 seconds. A meaningful Pyro resistance shred that buffs all Pyro damage from the whole team, including Pyronado. The debuff applies as long as Guoba hits, which in most fights it does consistently.
- C2 – Oil Meets Fire: The last attack in Xiangling’s Normal Attack sequence applies the Implode status on the enemy for 2 seconds. When the duration expires, an explosion deals 75% of Xiangling’s ATK as AoE Pyro DMG. Only relevant if Xiangling uses Normal Attacks on-field, which is rare in Sub-DPS builds. Low practical value in her standard role.
- C3 – Deepfry: Increases the talent level of Pyronado by 3. A direct damage boost to her most important skill. One of the strongest constellation upgrades she has in terms of percentage DPS increase.
- C4 – Slowbake (Most Important): Pyronado’s duration is increased by 40%. This extends Pyronado from 10 to 14 seconds at base, significantly increasing her damage per rotation and giving her more time to deal off-field Pyro damage. This is Xiangling’s most impactful constellation and dramatically raises her ceiling in long fights. C4 is the primary stopping point most players aim for.
- C5 – Guoba Mad: Increases the talent level of Guoba Attack by 3. Boosts Guoba’s damage and his energy particle generation slightly. A decent upgrade that improves her Skill without changing her overall role.
- C6 – Condensed Pyronado: During Pyronado’s duration, all party members receive a 15% Pyro DMG Bonus. Note that Pyronado itself does not snapshot this buff when it is first cast — the buff is applied to the party after activation. Guoba, however, can benefit if cast after Pyronado is already running. The 15% Pyro DMG Bonus for the whole team is a strong buff for full Pyro parties and for other Pyro characters on the team like Bennett.
Investment priority: C4 is the standout constellation and the most valuable stopping point. The 40% Pyronado duration increase is a massive effective DPS increase that directly translates to more Vaporize and Melt triggers per rotation. C1 and C3 are both solid mid-tier upgrades. C6 adds team utility.
Xiangling Talent Priority
Here is the correct order to invest talent materials for Xiangling:
- Elemental Burst – Pyronado (Highest Priority): Everything Xiangling does revolves around Pyronado. Leveling this increases the damage of every Pyronado hit and is the single most impactful investment you can make. Crown this first when resources allow.
- Elemental Skill – Guoba Attack (Second): Guoba provides additional Pyro DMG and generates energy particles. Leveling it is a meaningful secondary upgrade, especially at higher constellation levels where Guoba’s damage is boosted by C5.
- Normal Attack – Dough-Fu (Skip): Almost never used in her Sub-DPS rotation. Save your talent books for Burst and Skill. Only level this if you are running an unusual on-field physical build, which is not recommended.
How to Play Xiangling – Rotation and the Snapshot Mechanic
Xiangling’s playstyle is rotation-dependent. The key to maximizing her damage is using Pyronado at the right moment in the rotation to capture all available buffs. Here is the standard Vaporize rotation with Bennett:
- Use Xiangling’s Elemental Skill first to summon Guoba and generate energy particles. Pick up the Chili Pepper when available.
- Use your Hydro support’s abilities (Xingqiu Burst, Kokomi Skill, etc.) to set up off-field Hydro application.
- Swap to Bennett and use his Elemental Burst to create the ATK buff field.
- While inside Bennett’s Burst field, swap to Xiangling and immediately cast Pyronado. This snapshots Bennett’s ATK buff into the Pyronado for its full duration — even after you swap off and Bennett’s field expires.
- Swap to your main DPS carry. Pyronado orbits them and applies Pyro constantly, triggering Vaporize with every hit against Hydro-aura’d enemies.
- Once all cooldowns are refreshed, repeat the rotation.
The single most important habit to build: never cast Pyronado before Bennett’s Burst is active. The snapshot mechanic means that casting Pyronado outside of Bennett’s field permanently throws away the ATK buff for that entire Burst duration. This one mistake can halve her effective damage in a rotation. Always Bennett first, then Pyronado.
Xiangling Ascension Materials
Here is everything you need to fully ascend Xiangling to level 90:
Character Ascension Materials
- Agnidus Agate (Sliver, Fragment, Chunk, Gemstone) — The standard Pyro ascension gem. Farmed from Pyro bosses including the Pyro Regisvine in Mondstadt, the Pyro Hypostasis in Inazuma, or the Primo Geovishap. Also craftable by combining lower-tier gems at an Alchemy Table.
- Everflame Seed — Dropped by the Pyro Regisvine, a world boss found in Mondstadt near Brightcrown Canyon. You need 46 total for full ascension. Farm this boss to simultaneously collect Agnidus Agate and Everflame Seeds.
- Jueyun Chili — A local specialty from Liyue, found growing in clusters around Jueyun Karst and Qingce Village. You need 168 total. Chef Mao — Xiangling’s father — sells up to five Jueyun Chilis at Wanmin Restaurant for 1,000 Mora each, restocking every three days. They can also be grown in the Serenitea Pot.
- Slime drops (Slime Condensate, Slime Secretions, Slime Concentrate) — Dropped by Slime enemies of all types found everywhere in Teyvat. You need large quantities for both ascension and talent upgrades, making Slimes one of the most frequently farmed common enemies in the game.
Talent Ascension Materials
- Books of Diligence (Teachings, Guide, Philosophies of Diligence) — Farmed from the Taishan Mansion Domain in Liyue, available on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday. You need 9 Teachings, 63 Guides, and 114 Philosophies to max one talent.
- Slime drops — Same enemy drops as above. Additional quantities needed for talent upgrades on top of the character ascension requirements.
- Dvalin’s Claw — Dropped by Stormterror (Dvalin), the weekly boss trounce domain in Mondstadt. You need 18 total to fully max all three talents. This is the most time-gated material — farm it every reset without missing.
- Crown of Insight — One per crowned talent. Obtained from limited events, seasonal region upgrades like the Sacred Sakura and Tree of Dreams, and Archon Quest milestones.
Xiangling Lore and Story
Xiangling grew up cooking alongside her father, Chef Mao, at Wanmin Restaurant — one of the most beloved dining spots on Chihu Rock in Liyue Harbor. From a young age she worked both as a chef and a waitress, learning the craft from the ground up. Her father has over two decades of experience, and even he praises her specialty spicy dishes as extraordinary.
What defines Xiangling as a chef — and as a character — is her absolute refusal to be limited by convention. Where Liyue’s culinary scene is divided between the Li and Yue schools of cooking (an ongoing argument among local chefs that has grown into something of a cultural war), Xiangling rejects the entire debate. Her philosophy is simple: good food is good food, period. She will use any ingredient that might produce a great result, no matter how unconventional. Slime Condensate, Mist Flower extracts, and unidentified flying insects have all made appearances in her recipes at various points.
She created the signature dish of Wanmin Restaurant, the Black-Back Perch Stew — a dish that intentionally merges the bold, rich flavors of Li cuisine with the fresh aromas and nutritional focus of Yue cuisine, deliberately bridging the divide that consumes her peers. Nobody has been able to replicate it.
Xiangling is energetic, cheerful, and genuinely obsessed with cooking in the most endearing way possible. She will cheerfully offer the Traveler experimental dishes without a moment of doubt and seems genuinely puzzled when others find her ingredient choices alarming. She is deeply loyal to her friends and to the restaurant, and her enthusiasm is completely genuine. Her English voice is provided by Jackie Lastra.
She first appeared in Genshin Impact’s launch content and has been part of the game since Version 1.0. She plays a meaningful supporting role in Liyue’s storyline and various seasonal events, including the Lantern Rite festival and cooking-themed limited events.
Is Xiangling Worth Building in Genshin Impact?
Without question — Xiangling is one of the best investments any player can make. She is free. She is powerful. She has been a core part of top-tier teams since the game launched and remains one even now, over five years later. No other 4-star character offers her combination of accessibility, damage output, and team flexibility.
Building her is also straightforward. The Catch is free via fishing. Emblem of Severed Fate drops from a farmable domain. Once those are in place, the rest of her build fills in naturally through substat farming. New players can have a functional Xiangling ready within a few weeks of starting the game.
Her ceiling scales with investment. At C4, her Pyronado uptime increases significantly. With a good Emblem set, The Catch or Engulfing Lightning, and Bennett in the team, she can compete with 5-star Sub-DPS characters in terms of raw team DPS contribution. In National and Vaporize teams, she is frequently the single largest damage contributor on the team despite being a free 4-star character.
If you have not built Xiangling yet, start today. For her two most important team partners, see the Bennett guide and the Xingqiu guide. For characters who work well alongside her in Melt compositions, also check out the Ganyu guide and the Kamisato Ayaka guide.
