Who Is Shenhe in Genshin Impact?

Shenhe is a 5-Star Cryo character who wields a Polearm. She was released in Version 2.4 on January 5, 2022. Her constellation is Crista Doloris and her title is Lonesome Transcendence.

She comes from a branch of an exorcist family in Liyue. After a traumatic experience in her childhood, Genshin Impact’s Cloud Retainer took her in as a disciple. She trained in isolation in the mountains of Liyue, which is why she comes across as cold and distant — she is far more comfortable with the adepti than with regular people.

Shenhe is not an adeptus herself. She is human. But her long years of training with Cloud Retainer have given her extraordinary power. She now keeps a violent urge inside her in check using red ropes — a key part of her character design and lore.

If you are building your Cryo roster, you may also want to check our guide on Cryo Traveler’s best build and their ascension and talent materials for comparison.

    Shenhe’s Role and Playstyle

Shenhe is a Cryo Support. She does not deal the main damage. Her job is to make your Cryo DPS characters hit much harder.

Her gameplay loop is simple. You bring her in, use her Elemental Skill, and then swap back to your main DPS. The Icy Quill effect she applies will keep boosting Cryo damage while she is off the field. You then use her Burst before swapping out again.

She has two Elemental Skill modes — Tap and Hold. Each gives different buffs:

    • Tap (Press): Gives 5 Icy Quills. Increases Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst Cryo DMG by 15%.
    • Hold: Gives 7 Icy Quills. Increases Normal, Charged, and Plunge Cryo DMG by 15%.

The Icy Quills add flat Cryo damage to your teammate’s attacks based on Shenhe’s current ATK. This is a flat DMG bonus — similar to how Yunjin works — so it scales well with your carry’s Crit Rate and Crit DMG.

Her Elemental Burst — Divine Maiden’s Deliverance — summons a Talisman Spirit on the field. It deals continuous AoE Cryo damage and reduces enemies’ Cryo and Physical RES inside the field.

    Shenhe Strengths and Weaknesses

    Strengths

    • One of the best Cryo buffers in the game.
    • Icy Quills are dynamic — they can apply even to abilities that already snapshotted.
    • Reduces enemy Cryo and Physical RES with her Burst.
    • Flexible rotations thanks to Tap and Hold Skill modes.
    • Relatively simple to build with good 4-star weapon options.

    Weaknesses

    • Niche — she only works with Cryo DPS characters.
    • The Icy Quill quota (5 or 7 hits) can run out fast in AoE situations.
    • High Energy Recharge requirements (80 cost Burst).
    • Balancing ATK and ER without her signature weapon is tricky.

    Best Weapons for Shenhe

Shenhe wants a Polearm with high Base ATK. The higher her ATK, the more damage her Icy Quills add to her teammates’ hits.

    5-Star Weapons

    • Calamity Queller (BiS): Shenhe’s signature weapon. It has high Base ATK, an ATK% secondary stat, and a passive that further boosts ATK. This is a perfect fit for her Icy Quill mechanic.
    • Primordial Jade Winged-Spear: Good Base ATK and a CRIT Rate secondary stat. A solid option if you have it.
    • Staff of Homa: Excellent ATK scaling via HP, works decently on Shenhe but is better on DPS characters who need it more.

    4-Star Weapons

    • Favonius Lance (Recommended): Provides teamwide Energy generation with its passive. You need to build some CRIT Rate to trigger it reliably. This is often the best free-to-play choice.
    • Tamayuratei no Ohanashi (Event Weapon): If you have it, this shares the same Base ATK and Energy Recharge secondary as Favonius Lance but grants extra ATK% after using an Elemental Skill — a solid alternative.
    • Lithic Spear: Builds ATK% and CRIT Rate. Better if you run multiple Liyue characters.
    • Wavebreaker’s Fin: Decent ATK% and Burst DMG bonus if your team has high combined Energy cost.

    Best Artifacts for Shenhe

Shenhe’s artifact builds focus on boosting her ATK — which directly increases the damage bonus her Icy Quills provide to the team.

    4-Piece Noblesse Oblige (Best Option)

This is her top choice for team support. The 4-piece bonus boosts the entire team’s ATK by 20% after she uses her Burst. Combined with all the other buffs she provides, this makes Shenhe a very strong team buffer. Aim for more than 2500 ATK and at least 200% Energy Recharge with this build.

    4-Piece Blizzard Strayer

If you use Shenhe specifically in a Freeze team, Blizzard Strayer lets her deal more personal Cryo damage. This is a secondary option if another teammate is already running Noblesse.

    4-Piece Tenacity of the Millelith

Another team-support option. The 4-piece passive buffs the party’s ATK and Shield Strength when she hits enemies with her Skill. This can be useful in specific Freeze or Mono Cryo setups.

    2-Piece Gladiator’s Finale + 2-Piece Shimenawa’s Reminiscence

A straightforward ATK% combo that maximizes the flat damage on her Icy Quills. This is a good option if you lack a full Noblesse set.

    Artifact Main Stats

    • Sands: ATK% (or Energy Recharge if ER is low)
    • Goblet: ATK%
    • Circlet: ATK%

    Recommended Substats

    • ATK% (priority)
    • Energy Recharge
    • Flat ATK
    • CRIT Rate (only if running Favonius Lance to trigger the passive)

    Best Teams for Shenhe

Shenhe works best in Freeze and Mono Cryo teams. She is a niche character, but in the right team she pushes Cryo damage to its ceiling.

    Shenhe Premium Freeze Team

    • Kamisato Ayaka — Main DPS
    • Shenhe — Cryo Buffer
    • Kaedehara Kazuha — Anemo Grouper + Cryo RES Shred
    • Sangonomiya Kokomi — Hydro Applicator + Healer

This is the top-tier Freeze composition. Ayaka deals massive Cryo damage boosted by Shenhe’s Icy Quills. Kazuha shreds Cryo RES and groups enemies. Kokomi keeps the Freeze going and heals the team.

    Shenhe Ganyu Freeze Team

    • Ganyu — Main DPS
    • Shenhe — Cryo Buffer
    • Venti / Kazuha — Anemo Support
    • Kokomi / Mona / Xingqiu — Hydro Applicator

Ganyu’s Charged Attacks get massive flat damage bonuses from Shenhe’s Icy Quills. Use Shenhe’s Hold Skill before Ganyu’s attack window to get the Normal/Charged Attack buff.

    Mono Cryo Team

    • Ayaka or Ganyu — Main DPS
    • Shenhe — Cryo Buffer
    • Rosaria — Cryo Sub-DPS (CRIT Rate buff at C6)
    • Diona / Kazuha — Shield / Anemo Support

In Mono Cryo, all three Cryo characters can trigger Icy Quills independently. This effectively multiplies her buffing output. Every Cryo character in the team benefits at the same time.

    Shenhe Wriothesley Team

    • Wriothesley — Main DPS
    • Shenhe — Cryo Buffer
    • Furina / Fischl — Sub-DPS / Electro (for Superconduct with Fischl)
    • Kazuha / Zhongli — Anemo / Geo Support

Wriothesley deals Cryo damage with his Normal and Charged Attacks. Use Shenhe’s Hold Skill before his attack window to supercharge each punch with flat Cryo damage from Icy Quills.

    Shenhe Constellations Guide

Shenhe is fully functional at C0. Her constellations are useful quality-of-life upgrades but not required. The best stopping points are C1 and C2.

    C1 – Clarity of Heart

Effect: Spring Spirit Summoning gains one extra charge.

This is the most impactful constellation for Shenhe. She gets two charges of her Elemental Skill. This means you can use a Tap Skill and a Hold Skill in the same rotation — applying both of her 4th Ascension Passive buffs at once. It also reduces Energy Recharge requirements and adds more flexibility to team rotations. If you pull just one extra copy, get C1.

    C2 – Centered Spirit

Effect: Divine Maiden’s Deliverance lasts 6 seconds longer. Active characters inside the field deal 15% more Cryo CRIT DMG.

This is the best constellation for players who want to go further. It extends Shenhe’s Burst from 12 seconds to 18 seconds — giving near 100% uptime since the cooldown is 20 seconds. On top of that, the 15% Cryo CRIT DMG bonus is very strong for any Cryo carry in the field. C2 is worth it if you have the resources.

    C3 – Invoker’s Spell

Effect: Increases Spring Spirit Summoning (Elemental Skill) by 3 levels, up to 15.

A minor talent level increase for the Skill. Low impact compared to C1 and C2.

C4 – Insight of the Divine Damsel

Effect: Shenhe gains a Skyfrost Mantra stack when Icy Quill is triggered. She consumes stacks on next Skill use to increase its damage by 5% per stack, up to 50 stacks.

This starts moving Shenhe into Sub-DPS territory. Fun but not necessary in most teams.

C5 – Divine Damsel of Devastation

Effect: Increases Divine Maiden’s Deliverance (Elemental Burst) by 3 levels, up to 15.

Another talent level boost for the Burst. Low overall impact.

    C6 – Mystical Abandon

Effect: Normal and Charged Attacks triggering Icy Quill no longer count toward the trigger quota.

A powerful constellation — but only if your Cryo carry uses a lot of Normal or Charged Attacks, like Ganyu or Ayaka. It removes the quota restriction for those attack types. However, most teams consume Icy Quills through Skills and Bursts anyway, so C6’s value depends heavily on your carry and playstyle. Only worth it in highly invested accounts.

    Shenhe Ascension Materials

Here is everything you need to fully ascend Shenhe from Level 1 to Level 90.

    • Shivada Jade Sliver x1
    • Shivada Jade Fragment x9
    • Shivada Jade Chunk x9
    • Shivada Jade Gemstone x6 — Drop from Cryo Regisvine, Cryo Hypostasis, or Coral Defenders.
    • Dragonheir’s False Fin x46 — Drop from Coral Defenders in Enkanomiya. You need to unlock Enkanomiya first through the Subterranean Trials of Drake and Serpent world quest. Farm this at least 23 times at World Level 8.
    • Qingxin x168 — Flowers found on high peaks across Liyue. Same plant used for Xiao.
    • Whopperflower Nectar x18
    • Shimmering Nectar x30
    • Energy Nectar x36 — All three drop from Whopperflowers across Teyvat.
    • 420,000 Mora

    Shenhe Talent Materials

To level all three of Shenhe’s talents to Level 10, you need the following:

    • Teachings of Prosperity x9
    • Guide to Prosperity x63
    • Philosophies of Prosperity x114 — Obtained from the Taishan Mansion domain in Liyue on Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
    • Hellfire Butterfly x18 — Weekly drop from the La Signora trounce domain. Challenge her at Level 70 or higher.
    • Crown of Insight x3 — For maxing all three talents to Level 10. Obtained from limited-time events and region offering trees.
    • 1,652,500 Mora

    Shenhe Talent Priority

Since Shenhe is a support, her talent priority looks different from a DPS character.

    • Elemental Skill (Spring Spirit Summoning) — Level first. The Icy Quill DMG bonus scales with this talent level. Higher level means more flat damage for your team.
    • Elemental Burst (Divine Maiden’s Deliverance) — Level second. Boosts the Cryo and Physical RES shred duration and her Burst’s own Cryo damage.
    • Normal Attack — Skip. Shenhe barely uses Normal Attacks. It is the lowest priority by far.

How to Play Shenhe – Rotation Guide

Shenhe’s rotation is fairly easy to execute once you understand when to use Tap vs Hold on her Skill.

    Basic Rotation (C0)

    1. Use Shenhe’s Elemental Skill (Hold) to grant 7 Icy Quills and buff Normal/Charged Attack Cryo DMG.
    2. Use Shenhe’s Elemental Burst to shred enemy Cryo/Physical RES.
    3. Swap to your Hydro applicator for Freeze setup.
    4. Swap to your main Cryo DPS and deal damage while Icy Quills are active.
    5. Repeat when Shenhe’s Skill comes off cooldown.

    Rotation Tip (C1)

With C1, use a Tap Skill early in the rotation to buff your carry’s Burst. Then use a Hold Skill before your carry’s main DPS window. This activates both of Shenhe’s A4 passive buffs in the same rotation.

    Shenhe Passives Explained

    A1 Passive – Deific Embrace

When Shenhe’s Elemental Skill hits an enemy, nearby characters gain an Elemental Absorption effect from its Cryo damage. This is a minor QoL passive.

A4 Passive – Spirit Communion Seal

This is the key passive to understand. After using Spring Spirit Summoning:

    • Press (Tap) version: Nearby characters gain 15% bonus Cryo DMG on Elemental Skills and Bursts for 10 seconds.
    • Hold version: Nearby characters gain 15% bonus Cryo DMG on Normal, Charged, and Plunge Attacks for 15 seconds.

This is why you want to use both versions in your rotation if possible — especially with C1.

    Utility Passive – Precise Coordination

Reduces Cryo character Stamina consumption while climbing by 20%. A nice exploration passive for a Cryo-heavy team.

    Where to Get Shenhe

Shenhe is a limited 5-Star character. She is only available on her Event Banner when it runs. She last appeared in the Phase 1 Banner of Version 5.7 (June 18 to July 8, 2025). She ran alongside Skirk’s release banner.

You can play Genshin Impact for free on the following platforms:

    • Official Website (PC)
    • Android (Google Play)
    • iOS (App Store)
    • PlayStation
    • Epic Games Store
    • Xbox

    Is Shenhe Worth Pulling?

Yes — if you use a Cryo main DPS like Ayaka, Ganyu, or Wriothesley, Shenhe is absolutely worth pulling. She is the single best Cryo buffer in the game and pushes Cryo hypercarry teams to their highest damage ceiling.

However, if you do not run a Cryo DPS, she offers very little value. She is a niche unit by design, but within her niche she is exceptional. If Ayaka or Ganyu is your main carry, Shenhe is one of the best investments you can make.

You may also want to check out other characters from the Snezhnaya region like Wriothesley or look into new Cryo additions like Alyosha and their ascension materials to build a complete Cryo roster.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Shenhe

    Is Shenhe good at C0?

Yes. Shenhe is a solid Cryo support at C0. Her Icy Quill quota limits her buffing frequency, but she still provides strong ATK-scaling flat damage bonuses and RES shred. C1 makes her more reliable, but C0 works fine.

Does Shenhe need her signature weapon?

No. Favonius Lance is her best 4-star option and works very well. The Calamity Queller increases her damage ceiling but is not required for her to be effective.

Can Shenhe be used as a main DPS?

It is not recommended. Shenhe is designed to spend most of her time off-field buffing allies. Building her as a main DPS weakens her supporting capability and gives worse overall team damage compared to pairing her with a dedicated Cryo carry.

Who are Shenhe’s best DPS partners?

Kamisato Ayaka, Ganyu, and Wriothesley are her top pairings. All three are Cryo DPS characters that make excellent use of her Icy Quills.

What Energy Recharge does Shenhe need?

Aim for at least 200% ER. Her Burst costs 80 Energy, which is relatively high. Using Favonius Lance or including a second Cryo battery like Diona or Rosaria can help reduce this requirement.

Is Shenhe worth building in 2026?

Yes, if you run Cryo carries. Shenhe’s Icy Quill mechanic still has one of the highest Cryo damage ceilings in the game. She is not a universal support, but she remains the go-to option for any player running Ayaka or Ganyu as their main DPS.
