TL;DR
- Zmey the Uninvited is the final boss of Mortal Shell 2, found past the Hidden Nave Beacon in the Unfound Path.
- You need 168 Ova to unlock the Unfound Path — collect them by clearing the six Corrupted Gates and cleansing Beacons.
- Before entering, clear the Hidden Nave Beacon to get the Endless Core, which removes the Tarforge weapon upgrade cap.
- Zmey is a massive dragon that combines melee sword attacks with Cosmic Flame — the deadliest damage type in the game.
- Equip the Seedbearer’s Scripture (from the Night Mode questline) for 80% Cosmic Disease resistance — almost essential for Phase 2.
- Always dodge sideways, never backward, when Zmey uses Blade Slam or sends fire in a straight line.
- Cascading Flare (flames erupting around you) is your free DPS window — Zmey stands still while casting it.
- Phase 2 starts at around half health — his sword gains Burn damage but the core attack patterns stay the same.
- Two summons are available before this fight — use both.
- The Week 1 Patch fixed Zmey’s tail grab — it no longer one-shots both your Shell and Harbinger from full health on Standard difficulty. In Night Mode the one-shot behaviour remains active.
- Winning unlocks the “It’s over now?” trophy. Do not select Send Ova at the Gloom Siphon afterwards unless you want to start New Game Plus immediately.
Zmey the Uninvited Boss Guide Mortal Shell 2
Zmey the Uninvited is the final boss of Mortal Shell 2 and the last mandatory fight in the game. He is a massive, malformed parasitic dragon that falls from beneath Marrow Keep into the Unfound Path arena — the culmination of everything the campaign has been building toward. Defeating him doesn’t end your save file, but it does unlock the one interaction that can lock you into New Game Plus, so knowing what happens after the fight matters as much as knowing how to survive it. This guide has been updated to reflect the Day One Patch, Balance Patch 1 (August 20, 2026), and the Week 1 Patch (August 29, 2026), which made several changes to Zmey’s behaviour.
This guide covers everything: how to unlock the Unfound Path, the critical preparation steps before entering the arena, a full breakdown of both phases, every notable attack, and what to do once the fight is over. If you still have earlier bosses to clear before reaching this point, our Mortal Shell 2 all boss list tracks every encounter in order, and our beginner’s guide covers the fundamentals you will rely on throughout this fight.
Who Is Zmey the Uninvited?
Zmey the Uninvited is described by the Fextralife wiki as a malformed, parasitic dragon. He falls from the base of Marrow Keep and crashes into the central platform of the Unfound Path, making his entrance feel like an event rather than a standard boss trigger. He is lore-connected to the Undermether and the stolen Ova that define the whole campaign’s objective — defeating him completes the main questline and allows the story to resolve.
Despite being the final boss, many players report finding Zmey more manageable than the Malborn Offspring from earlier in the Unfound Path. The key difference is that Zmey’s attacks are well-telegraphed and readable once you understand the core dodge principle: always go sideways, never backward. His danger comes from Cosmic Flame and the Cosmic Disease status effect it inflicts — not from unfair speed or brutal multi-hit combos. Note that Zmey received a significant rework in the Day One Patch — significantly more health and higher damage than the Open Beta version — so strategies from pre-launch builds will not reflect the current retail fight.

How to Unlock the Unfound Path and Reach Zmey
Step 1 — Collect 168 Ova
The Unfound Path only opens once you have gathered 168 Ova. The fastest route to hit that number is to clear all six Corrupted Gate bosses in Fainweald and Mammon, since each major boss you defeat spawns a Beacon containing a batch of Ova. You do not strictly need all six gates cleared — cleansing Beacons across the overworld also adds to your Ova count. But the six gates are the most efficient source. Track your progress in the Gloom Siphon room at Marrow Keep.
Step 2 — Activate the Gloom Siphon
Once you have 168 Ova, head to the room in Marrow Keep that holds the Gloom Siphon. Speak with the NPC there. This opens a passage in the floor leading down into a large underground area — the entrance to the Unfound Path. As of the Week 1 Patch, the Gloom Siphon also rewards Glimpses when you deposit Ova, so interact with it whenever you can regardless of your progress toward the final boss.
Step 3 — Clear the Three Tendril Guardians
The Unfound Path contains three branching segments, each guarded by a boss protecting a corrupted tendril. You must defeat all three before the central platform opens. The three guardians are Malborn Offspring, The Monolith, and Orrem the Reclaimed. They can be tackled in any order. Our full guide on the Malborn Offspring covers the hardest of the three in detail. Note that The Monolith received specific fixes in the Week 1 Patch — its laser and spin attacks now have more consistent timing and no longer spam, and a bug causing it to deal double damage on certain hits has been corrected.
After each tendril guardian falls, approach the infected cocoons on the nearby wall and sever them. Once all three tendrils are severed, the central platform unlocks and the path to the Hidden Nave Beacon opens.
Step 4 — Cleanse the Hidden Nave Beacon and Get the Endless Core
Before going anywhere near Zmey, cleanse the Hidden Nave Beacon. Inside it you will find the Endless Core — the final Tarforge upgrade in the game. The Endless Core removes the weapon upgrade cap entirely, letting you push your primary and secondary weapons beyond the standard maximum. This makes a meaningful difference in Phase 2 of the Zmey fight. Do not skip this step.
Step 5 — Activate Summons and Take the Updraft
Just before the Zmey arena, you can summon two Shell spirits: Genessa and Tiel. Both are available at the same time, which is unique to this encounter. Summoning both costs Glimpse but is strongly recommended — having two spirit allies drawing Zmey’s attention gives you far more breathing room to land hits, apply Tarstones to your weapon, and recover between his attacks. As of the Week 1 Patch, Glimpses are no longer a finite resource, so spending them on both summons no longer means sacrificing Shell upgrades.
Take the updraft behind the Hidden Nave Beacon to rise into the final arena. The fight begins when you land.

Essential Preparation — Seedbearer’s Scripture
The Seedbearer’s Scripture is arguably the most important piece of preparation for the Zmey fight. It is an item that grants 80% Cosmic Disease resistance when equipped in your passive item slot — and Cosmic Disease is the status effect Zmey’s flames inflict. Without protection, Cosmic Disease lingers far longer than any other damage-over-time effect in the game, cannot be cleared by other items, and can wipe you out in Phase 2 when Zmey uses his wave attack.
To get the Seedbearer’s Scripture, you need to complete a Night Mode side quest involving three Glands collected from the three Corrupted Gate dungeons in Mammon. With all three Glands, activate Night Mode by speaking with Thestus at the top of Marrow Keep, then travel to the Forgotten Tower west of Sester’s Beacon and offer the Glands to the corpse on the upper floor. The Seedbearer’s Scripture is your reward.
If you do not have it, Zmey is still beatable — but Phase 2 becomes significantly more punishing, especially during the wave attack. Getting this item before the final fight is highly recommended and many players consider it near-essential.
Zmey the Uninvited Phase 1 Strategy
When the fight starts, Zmey is large, the arena is wide, and his attacks have enormous reach. The most important principle to establish immediately is the dodge direction rule: always dodge sideways, never backward. Backward movement fails against most of Zmey’s attacks because the fire travels further than you can run in the dodge animation. Sideways takes you out of the line of nearly everything he throws at you.
The safest positioning in Phase 1 is attacking from his side rather than fighting him head-on. This avoids most frontal sweeps and limits the number of moves you need to actively dodge. His tail and sword can still clip you from the side on certain attacks, so stay alert even from this angle — but it is the best default position to work from.
Cascading Flare is not a danger to avoid — it is a gift. When Zmey stands still and erupts flames around your position, move away from the flame zone and then rush back in while he is rooted. He cannot attack during Cascading Flare. This is your most reliable free DPS window across both phases. Recognise it and use it every time.
Keep your punish windows short. Zmey’s size makes it easy to misjudge how much time you actually have after each attack. Commit to two or three hits, then disengage and wait for the next clear opening. Greed kills this fight more than anything else.
When using Ripostes against Zmey, trigger them with a light attack — since the Day One Patch, heavy attacks no longer activate the Riposte. Also note that Riposte damage against Zmey is capped per hit, preventing the fight from being bypassed through rapid-fire Riposte chaining. This was set in the Day One Patch and remains the current behaviour.
Phase 1 Notable Attacks
- Blade Slam: Zmey jumps away from you and then slams down with his sword, sending a wave of Cosmic Flames traveling in a straight line across the arena floor. When you see him jump back, immediately move sideways. Do not run backward — the flames travel faster than a backward sprint. This is his most readable attack once you know the dodge direction.
- Cascading Flare: Zmey stops moving and causes Cosmic Flames to erupt around your position for several seconds. Move away from the affected area immediately and wait for the flames to clear. While he is rooted and casting this, close the gap and deal damage freely. This is your primary damage window in both phases.
- Downward Sword Swing: A large overhead slam directly in front of him. Dodge to his side. This is the most common melee attack in the fight and the most parry-friendly for players building the Break meter.
- Tail Sweep: A wide horizontal tail swipe. Watch for the tail to extend and dodge into the swing rather than away from it — rolling into the tail animation usually avoids the hitbox.
- Tail Grab: When you are at mid-range from Zmey, he may attempt to skewer you with his tail. As of the Week 1 Patch, a successful Tail Grab no longer instantly kills both your Shell and Harbinger from full health on Standard difficulty — the one-shot behaviour has been toned down. If you are playing in Night Mode, the full one-shot remains active, so treat this attack with maximum urgency in that mode.
- Flamebreath: Zmey breathes Cosmic Flames across an area in front of him. When he begins this wind-up, sprint sideways and keep moving until the breath ends. Do not stand still. After the breath completes, close the gap quickly — this is another window to deal damage.
- Red Icon Point-Blank Slam: When you stay too close to Zmey for too long, a red icon flashes and he performs a brutal close-range downward slam. When you see the red icon while in melee range, dodge backward immediately. This one is the unparryable punishment for face-hugging too long.
- Sword Combo Swings: Occasional multi-hit sword combinations while you are at mid-range. He sweeps back and forth with the blade. Stay to his side and dodge each swing, then punish the recovery.
Zmey the Uninvited Phase 2 Strategy
At around 50% health, Zmey staggers. While he is down, keep dealing damage — this transition window is free hits. When Phase 2 begins, his sword ignites with flames and all sword attacks deal Burn damage on top of their base damage. This is where the Seedbearer’s Scripture earns its place. If Cosmic Disease stacks on top of Burn during Phase 2, the combined damage-over-time can kill you before you get a heal off.
The attack patterns in Phase 2 are largely the same as Phase 1. The Blade Slam, Cascading Flare, Flamebreath, and sword swings all return. The key change is the Burn damage on his sword and a new wave attack that can hit you for heavy Cosmic damage if you are not protected. Zmey’s Ring Waves now align to the ground properly after the Week 1 Patch, and his elemental stomps have new visual effects — both of these changes make Phase 2 attacks more readable than at launch.
The wave attack appears in Phase 2 specifically. Zmey uses it multiple times. Dodge sideways through each wave and keep moving in the same direction as the waves pulse outward. Trying to run the opposite direction leads to taking multiple hits. If you have the Seedbearer’s Scripture passive equipped, this attack becomes manageable. Without it, this attack is one of the primary ways the fight ends badly.
The Burn damage on his sword means healing priority goes up in Phase 2. Don’t wait until critical health to use your flasks — the stacking damage-over-time means a low-health situation can collapse faster than in earlier phases of the fight.
Continue using the Cascading Flare window for free damage and maintain the sideways positioning. The increased damage output of a fully upgraded weapon via the Endless Core shows its value here — shorter fights mean less exposure to Cosmic Disease stacking up. With Riposte damage now scaling to enemy health after the Week 1 Patch, each successful parry into a light-attack Riposte hits harder in Phase 2 than it did at launch.
Phase 2 Additional Attacks
- Wave Attack / Ring Waves (Cosmic Damage): Zmey sends multiple waves of Cosmic energy outward from his body. Dodge sideways and keep moving in the same direction as the waves. Do not attempt to run the opposite direction. This is the most dangerous new addition in Phase 2 — Cosmic Disease from this attack combined with Burn from sword hits can kill very quickly without the Seedbearer’s Scripture passive. The Week 1 Patch fixed the Ring Waves so they now align correctly to the ground, making the visual timing more trustworthy.
- Burning Sword Swings: All sword attacks from Phase 1 return but now inflict Burn on hit. The animations and dodge directions remain identical — the added damage is the only change.
Best Build and Shell for the Zmey Fight
Shell Choice
Tiel is widely considered the best Shell for this fight. Shadow Dodge lets you turn invisible on a well-timed dodge and follow up with a Shadow Strike. At higher Bond tiers, Tiel also leaves Shadow Clones when dashing — these clones distract Zmey during his attack sequences and give you free hits while he swings at the decoys. A fully upgraded Tiel can clear this fight faster than many other options because the constant invisibility after dodges prevents Zmey from tracking you reliably. You can also summon Tiel as a spirit ally before the fight even if you are playing a different Shell. The Week 1 Patch fixed Genessa’s dashes and summon interactions, making her a more reliable spirit summon alongside Tiel than she was at launch.
Genessa is also effective. Her Faithful Doubles draw Zmey’s aggro and give you windows to heal, apply Tarstones, and fire sidearm shots. If you brought Genessa through the Sester Secundus encounter and have her upgraded, the combination of summoned Doubles plus the spirit summon at the arena entrance gives you substantial aggro management. See our best shells guide for a full comparison.
Items and Setup
- Seedbearer’s Scripture (passive slot): 80% Cosmic Disease resistance. Treat this as mandatory if you have it. The alternative active use clears the disease on demand but only once, while the passive permanently mitigates the most dangerous damage type in the fight.
- Burnt Effigy (alternative if no Seedbearer’s Scripture): Reduces Burn damage, which matters in Phase 2. Less effective than the Seedbearer’s Scripture for total mitigation but useful if you did not complete the Night Mode questline.
- Tarstones: Apply a Tarstone element like Burn or Stasis to your primary weapon or sidearm before going in. The Summons drawing Zmey’s aggro give you time to apply Tarstones at the start of the fight if you didn’t prepare beforehand. Our best Tarstones guide covers the strongest options.
- Endless Core weapon upgrades: Make sure your primary weapon is at maximum upgrade through the Tarforge after collecting the Endless Core. A higher damage per hit means shorter phases and less total exposure to Cosmic Disease.
- Both spirit summons: Genessa and Tiel are available simultaneously before this fight. Spend the Glimpse — they are no longer finite as of the Week 1 Patch, so there is no cost to using both. Having two spirit allies distracting Zmey while you deal damage is one of the clearest advantages available to you in this encounter.
- Sidearms with element applied: When Zmey is far away and you cannot reach him in melee, sidearm shots keep damage ticking. Apply fire or another Tarstone element and fire between his attacks when distance creates a gap. Our best sidearms guide covers your options.
What Happens After Defeating Zmey — The New Game Plus Warning
Defeating Zmey does not automatically start New Game Plus. The game returns you to Marrow Keep with your full save intact. You can continue exploring, fight optional bosses, collect remaining Shells and weapons, or finish any side content you missed. There is no time pressure and nothing is locked off.
The real point of no return is a specific interaction at the Gloom Siphon in Marrow Keep. After Zmey falls, a new option appears when you interact with the Gloom Siphon: Send Ova. Selecting this option starts New Game Plus immediately. There is no confirmation prompt — selecting it commits you. The game does not warn you that this is permanent.
Do not select Send Ova until you are ready for a fresh playthrough. If you have remaining Shells to unlock, weapons to collect, optional bosses to clear, or trophies to pursue, do all of that first. The “It’s over now?” trophy unlocks when you defeat Zmey — you do not need to start New Game Plus to claim it.
Winning this fight also triggers the main ending cutscene. Undermether prepares to send the recovered Ova to the heavens. The Harbinger is told he was not made for the heavens and must remain behind to find his own meaning. Control returns after the sequence and the world remains fully open.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Dodging backward from Blade Slam. This is the most common mistake in the fight. Backward movement cannot outrun the Cosmic Flame line. Sideways always. Commit to this early and the fight becomes much more readable.
- Skipping the Hidden Nave Beacon and Endless Core. The Endless Core removes the weapon upgrade cap. Going into this fight without it means your weapon is underperforming. Cleanse the Beacon before the arena — it is right there on the route.
- Skipping the Seedbearer’s Scripture. The Night Mode questline is not required for story progress, which is why many players miss it. But without 80% Cosmic Disease resistance, Phase 2’s wave attack can end a run very quickly. Get it beforehand.
- Not using both spirit summons. Genessa and Tiel can both be summoned simultaneously at this fight. Glimpses are no longer finite after the Week 1 Patch, so there is no reason to hold back. Two spirit allies draw significantly more aggro than one.
- Getting greedy during punish windows. Zmey’s size makes openings feel larger than they are. Two or three hits, then back off. Committing to long combos leaves you inside Zmey’s attack range when the next move starts.
- Staying too long at close range without watching the red icon. The point-blank slam with the red indicator triggers when you face-hug for too long. If a red icon appears while you are in melee range, dodge backward immediately.
- Triggering the Tail Grab in Night Mode. The Week 1 Patch toned down the Tail Grab on Standard difficulty, but in Night Mode it still one-shots both your Shell and Harbinger. Stay mobile and do not linger at mid-range long enough for Zmey to line up this attack while playing at night.
- Using heavy attacks to trigger Ripostes. Since the Day One Patch, only light attacks open a Riposte on the red dot. Heavy attacks no longer work for this. Press the light attack button when the red dot appears.
- Selecting Send Ova at the Gloom Siphon without finishing side content first. This has no confirmation and starts New Game Plus. Do everything you want to do in the current save before touching this option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Zmey the Uninvited in Mortal Shell 2?
Zmey the Uninvited is found past the Hidden Nave Beacon in the Unfound Path, which is the game’s final dungeon accessible from beneath Marrow Keep. To reach him, you need 168 Ova to open the Unfound Path via the Gloom Siphon room, then defeat the three tendril guardians inside (Malborn Offspring, The Monolith, and Orrem the Reclaimed) to unlock the central platform, cleanse the Hidden Nave Beacon, and then take the updraft behind that Beacon into the final arena.
Does defeating Zmey start New Game Plus?
No. Defeating Zmey returns you to Marrow Keep with your save fully intact. You can continue exploring, collecting remaining items, and completing optional content at your own pace. New Game Plus only begins if you select the Send Ova option that appears at the Gloom Siphon after Zmey is defeated. There is no confirmation prompt on that option — selecting it commits immediately. Do not choose it until you are ready to restart.
What is the best way to beat Zmey the Uninvited?
Equip the Seedbearer’s Scripture in your passive slot for 80% Cosmic Disease resistance, upgrade your weapon to maximum using the Endless Core from the Hidden Nave Beacon, and summon both Genessa and Tiel before entering the arena — Glimpses are no longer finite after the Week 1 Patch so spending them on both summons carries no long-term cost. In the fight, always dodge sideways — never backward — from Blade Slam and fire attacks. Use the Cascading Flare cast window to deal free damage while Zmey stands still. Attack from his side rather than head-on to reduce exposure to frontal attacks. Keep punish windows short — two or three hits, then disengage. Trigger all Ripostes with a light attack, not a heavy. In Phase 2, watch for the Ring Wave attack and dodge sideways through each wave rather than attempting to outrun them.
What do you get for beating Zmey the Uninvited?
Defeating Zmey the Uninvited unlocks the “It’s over now?” trophy or achievement and triggers the main story ending cutscene. The fight itself drops no item reward. After the ending, you return to Marrow Keep in your current save with free-roam available. The only post-defeat unlock is the Send Ova option at the Gloom Siphon, which starts New Game Plus when selected — but this is a player choice, not an automatic progression event.
