  • The Ancient Sealed Gate is at the top of Sage’s Peak in the Pailune region.
  • It’s part of the Twisted Thicketway Abyss challenge, accessed via the Skybridge network or the Root’s End Ruins.
  • The puzzle involves a cogwheel mechanism inside a hidden underground chamber on the eastern side of the peak.

The Ancient Sealed Gate puzzle trips up a lot of players because it doesn’t explain itself at all. You land from the Skybridge and there’s nothing obvious to interact with. The game just drops you near a massive broken fan on a mountaintop and leaves you to figure it out.

Once you know where the hidden chamber is and how the cogwheel mechanic works, this puzzle is very doable. This guide walks you through every step from finding the entrance to riding the fan into the sky.

Where Is the Ancient Sealed Gate?

The Ancient Sealed Gate sits at the top of Sage’s Peak in the Pailune region. You’ll recognize it by the large broken fan structure aimed toward the sky, surrounded by wires and ancient machinery.

There are two ways to reach it:

Via the Skybridge — Progress through the Skybridge network. After solving the Skyloop Bridge puzzle, a teleporter becomes available that drops you directly to the Sage’s Peak area.

Via Root’s End Ruins — You can also access this area by heading to the Root’s End Ruins in Pailune without needing to use the Skybridge teleporter at all. This is the more direct route if you’re approaching from the ground.

Before you do anything else, activate the Abyss Nexus right next to the gate at the summit. This gives you a fast travel point so you can return here quickly if you fall during the puzzle or need to leave.

How to Find the Hidden Chamber

The puzzle itself doesn’t happen at the fan. It happens underground.

From the fan at the top of Sage’s Peak, look toward the eastern side of the peak — the side facing the rising sun. Drop down to the first major ledge below the summit. There you’ll find a narrow cave entrance leading into the mountain. This is the hidden chamber.

Head inside and walk to the very back of the first room. You’ll find a stone lift platform. Press the interact button to activate it and ride it up to the upper floor.

Ancient Sealed Gate Puzzle — Step-by-Step Solution

When you reach the upper floor via the lift, you’ll find yourself in a large mechanical room. There’s a central metallic pole in the middle and three cogwheels positioned around it in the ceiling. The controls appear on the right side of your screen once you connect.

Step 1 — Connect Your Axiom Force to the Mechanism

Walk up to the central mechanism and use Axiom Force (L3 on controller / TAB on PC). This tethers you to the pole and activates the control overlay on screen. You can now move the pole and rotate the gears using the on-screen button prompts.

If you need a refresher on how Axiom Force works throughout the game, our guide on how to use Axiom Force in Crimson Desert covers it fully.

Step 2 — Move the Pole to the First Outer Cogwheel

Use the directional controls to move the central pole toward one of the three outer cogwheels on the ceiling. Once it’s underneath, press the Operate button to lock the pole into that gear and connect them.

Step 3 — Rotate the Cogwheel Until You Hear the Sound

This is where most players get stuck. There is no visual indicator for the correct position. You have to go by sound.

Start rotating the cogwheel slowly in one direction. Listen carefully. You’re waiting for a distinct metal cracking, clinking, or twinkling sound. That sound tells you the gear is in the correct position. Once you hear it, perform a slight final turn to lock it in place. The gear will begin to glow to confirm it’s set correctly.

If you’re playing with low volume, watch the base of the cogwheel instead — you should see a faint blue spark or a small mechanical vibration when it hits the right alignment.

Step 4 — Repeat for All Three Outer Cogwheels

Move the pole to each of the remaining two outer cogwheels one at a time. Lock each one in with the Operate button, rotate until you hear the clink, then lock it. Do this for all three.

Once all three outer cogs are locked in correctly, the middle central cogwheel will light up. That’s your signal to move to the final step.

Step 5 — Activate the Middle Cogwheel

Move the central pole to the middle cogwheel and press the Operate button to connect. Then rotate it in either direction. You’ll hear the massive fan blades above start churning and feel the ancient machinery shaking the room. The fan is now active.

Step 6 — Climb Back Up and Ride the Fan

Leave the chamber and climb back up to the summit of Sage’s Peak. The fan is now spinning at full speed with a strong visible updraft — you can see white streaks of wind shooting upward.

Walk directly to the center of the fan. When you’re launched into the air, immediately deploy your Wings/Glide ability. The updraft will carry you high into the sky and transition you directly into the Twisted Thicketway — a floating island region in the Abyss.

The Ancient Sealed Gate puzzle is solved.

Troubleshooting Tips

Pole got stuck or won’t align? Disconnect your Axiom Force and reconnect it. This often resets the pole to its neutral position so you can try again without restarting.

Can’t hear the clink sound? Look at the base of the cogwheel for a small blue spark or vibration. That’s the visual version of the audio cue.

Fan isn’t spinning after you activate the center cog? You likely didn’t fully lock all three outer cogwheels. Go back and try each one again — listen for the sound on each.

Got launched but missed the Abyss transition? Make sure you’re standing directly in the center of the fan, not on the edge. If you drift sideways the updraft won’t carry you far enough.

Running out of Spirit during the puzzle? Keep Palmar Pills on hand. Axiom Force slowly consumes your Spirit while the tether is active. If your bar runs dry mid-puzzle you’ll lose the connection. Check out our guide on how to get max stamina in Crimson Desert to prep better for Abyss content.

What Happens After — The Twisted Thicketway

Once you ride the fan up, you land in the Twisted Thicketway, a specialized floating island area within the Abyss. This region has its own unique challenges, including the Abyss Kutum boss fight. The Twisted Thicketway also contains a Power Core and an Abyss Artifact to collect after clearing the area.

After landing on the Abyss Nexus in the Twisted Thicketway, you can use it as a permanent fast travel point without needing to redo the fan each time. Carefully land on it first before exploring further.
