Getting a full black look in Crimson Desert is something a lot of players want from early on. The problem is the dye system doesn’t explain itself well, Black Dye specifically has a confusing name mismatch, and the crafted version is locked behind late-game alchemy. This guide covers every single method — early, mid, and late — so you can go full black knight whenever you’re ready.

How the Dye System Works — Quick Overview
Before jumping into Black Dye specifically, it helps to understand how the system works so nothing trips you up.
There are three ways to get dyes in Crimson Desert: buying them from Dyehouse vendors, finding or stealing them in the open world, and crafting them at a Cauldron using insects and flowers.
Once you have a dye bottle — however you got it — open your inventory and press Use on it. This permanently learns the color. Without this step, the dye will not show up at the Dyehouse interface no matter what. Many players skip this and wonder why the color isn’t appearing. Don’t make that mistake.
After using the bottle, head to a Dyehouse and speak to the dyer. You can select individual sections of each armor or weapon piece and apply different colors independently. Each piece has multiple dye zones — the main body, straps, ornamental trim, and more. You also get options to adjust the material finish: polished metal, worn leather, matte fabric, or shiny lacquer. The same system applies to horse gear.
One important limitation: Dyehouses are region-locked. The Hernand Dyehouse (run by Theoric) only applies red-family dyes. The Demeniss Dyehouse only does blues and purples. You cannot use a color outside a Dyehouse’s regional specialty. The workaround is Oliver, the dyer you recruit to your Greymane Camp. He can apply any color you’ve learned, from any region, all in one place. More on that below.
Method 1: Deep Red Dye at Ford Cabin (Earliest & Easiest)
This is the fastest way to get Black Dye in Crimson Desert and you can do it very early in the game. Here’s the catch — it’s called the wrong thing.
The item is named “Deep Red Dye” but it applies as Black.
When you pick it up, it goes into your inventory labeled as Deep Red Dye. When you use it, it unlocks Black Dye for customization. The name is misleading but the result is correct.
Where to find it:
Go to the Ford Cabin in Hook Rapids, which is north of Hernand. The cabin is located on the waterway north of town. Head inside and climb the ladder up to the upper floor. You’ll see a “???” bottle sitting on a table. Pick it up — it enters your inventory as Deep Red Dye.
Use it from your inventory immediately to unlock Black Dye. Then head to the Hernand Dyehouse or any applicable Dyehouse and it’ll appear in your color options.
This is currently the fastest Black Dye method available, requiring zero quest completion and no crafting materials. It shows up in the Hernandian dyes section at compatible Dyehouses.
Important: Don’t sell the bottle before using it. Selling an unlearned dye means you lose the unlock and need to find or buy it again.
Method 2: Buy Black Dye from the Back Alley Shop in Tashkalp
This method requires completing a quest chain first, but once unlocked it gives you a reliable vendor source for Black Dye.
Cost: 37.50 coins from the Back Alley Shop in Tashkalp.
How to unlock it — step by step:
Step 1 — Liberate Muiquun. The process begins by liberating the town of Muiquun. This is a mandatory trigger for the hidden questline that unlocks this shop. Complete the liberation and stabilize the region before moving on.
Step 2 — Lifted Fog phase. After Muiquun is liberated, a quest phase called “Lifted Fog” opens up. Your role here is to deliver news to a guard NPC to advance the storyline. It’s a short step, but required.
Step 3 — Complete the Lawless Market quest chain. This is the main quest chain that unlocks the underground market network in Tashkalp. It involves wagon-selling missions as part of a black market operation. Complete all three wagon missions to finalize your involvement.
Step 4 — Wait for the shop to open. After finishing the wagon mission, the game enforces an in-game waiting period — roughly 12 hours of in-game time — simulating the underground market preparing items for sale. Step 5 — Buy Black Dye. Once the wait is over, the Back Alley Shop in Tashkalp has Black Dye available for 37.50 coins. If it doesn’t appear immediately, double-check that enough in-game time has passed since completing the wagon mission.
This method is great if you want a permanent vendor source rather than relying on a one-time pickup.
Method 3: Craft Midnight Black Dye at a Cauldron
The crafted version of black dye in Crimson Desert is called Midnight Black Dye. This is the official, permanent crafting solution — but it requires specific ingredients that are harder to come by.
Recipe:

Craft it at a Cauldron. Cauldrons are found in:
- Hernand Town Alchemy Lab (near the Tannery — look for two recipe scroll icons on the minimap)
- Shadow’s Whisper Cave (the Witch’s Lair north of Hernand Castle) — the earliest cauldron most players find
- Greymane Camp Alchemy Lab (unlocked after camp upgrades)
Inside the Cauldron menu, switch to the Dye tab, select the Midnight Black Dye recipe, and add your ingredients. Once crafted, use the bottle from your inventory to learn the color permanently.
A note on Mordant: This is the ingredient players struggle with most. Some sources confirm it’s available from general merchants, and others suggest it becomes easier to find after recruiting the camp dye merchant. If you’re stuck on Mordant, check general merchants across multiple towns and buy it in bulk when you find it — you’ll need it for Crimson Dye and Royal Gold Dye recipes too.
Discovering the recipe: You don’t need to find the recipe scroll first. Simply talking to a Dyehouse vendor or finding a dye bottle in the world auto-unlocks its recipe in the cauldron list. If you’ve already used the Deep Red Dye from Ford Cabin, the recipe for the dark red family should appear in your cauldron — from there, experimenting with different combinations can reveal the Midnight Black recipe.
How to Apply Black Dye to Your Armor
Once you’ve learned Black Dye (via any method above), here’s how to apply it:
- Go to a Dyehouse. The earliest one is the Hernand Farmland Dyehouse, run by Theoric, southeast of Hernand Castle.
- Speak to the dyer and select Dye.
- Choose the equipment piece you want to recolor on the left side of the screen.
- Select the dye zone you want to color — each piece has multiple zones (body, straps, ornaments, etc.).
- Pick your color — Black Dye or your darkest shade — and adjust the material finish if you want.
- Press Dye (Triangle on PS5 / Y on Xbox) and pay the small silver fee to confirm.
Regional limit reminder: If Black Dye isn’t showing up at a Dyehouse, that vendor may not work with that color family. The Hernand Dyehouse covers red and dark tones. If you’re still not seeing it, head to your camp Dyehouse with Oliver — he applies everything.
How to Unlock Oliver — Your Camp Dyer
Oliver is the endgame solution to all regional Dyehouse limitations. Once recruited, he can apply any color you’ve unlocked from any region, all from one location at your Greymane Camp in Howling Hill. He also sells the exclusive Shadow Grey Dye — the only dye that cannot be crafted or found anywhere else in the world, priced at 1,500 copper.
How to unlock Oliver:
- Follow the Greymane faction questline at Howling Hill and keep upgrading your camp.
- Complete your third camp expansion — this requires finishing all of the “Gathered Will – Grounds of the Sunrise” Greymane faction quests, including the apple tree growing quest.
- A rumor will appear pointing you toward Oliver’s recruitment location at Inksworth Bindery.
- Follow the rumor, find Oliver, and recruit him back to camp.
Once Oliver is set up at camp, you no longer need to travel to regional Dyehouses for different colors. Talking to each regional Dyehouse vendor at least once is still worthwhile — doing so registers that region’s color palette with Oliver so he can apply it at camp.

Naturally Black Armor — Skip the Dye Entirely
If you want the black knight look before you have dye sorted out, a few armor sets in the game come naturally dark straight out of the chest.

Bonus — Free Dye Farming Trick (Grilled Meat Method)
If you want to build up your dye collection beyond just black without spending silver, there’s a well-known free farming method using Grilled Meat.
Every Dyer NPC at every Dyehouse has a Trust meter. Gift them Grilled Meats (crafted by cooking animal meat using Blinding Flash’s sunlight deflection) until their Trust hits 100. They reward you with a random dye. Save your game, reload — fresh NPCs respawn at the same Dyehouse. Repeat the loop. Cycle through different Dyehouses across regions to collect dyes from every color family. Coin bags also work for building Trust fast.
This method can eventually get you every dye in the game, including rare ones, without crafting a single bottle. It just takes patience and some prep to cook the Grilled Meats.
