Destiny 2: All Strangelet Locations in Explore Kepler: Fabled Mission

Complete guide to all Strangelet locations in Destiny 2's Explore Kepler: Fabled mission — Outer Wastes, Curtilage Divide, all four campaign Strangelets, tips for the boss fights, and the Matterspark IV reward.

TL;DR

  • Explore Kepler: Fabled requires collecting six Strangelets total for the Altar of Relativity.
  • Four Strangelets come from replaying Edge of Fate campaign missions on Fabled difficulty.
  • Two secret Strangelets are hidden in the open world — one in Outer Wastes, one in Curtilage Divide.
  • You can only hold one Strangelet at a time — return each one to the Altar of Relativity before collecting the next.
  • You need at least Power Level 150 to take on Fabled difficulty comfortably.
  • Completing the quest unlocks Matterspark IV — adds Jolt, auto-reload, and health restoration — plus a Tier 4 weapon and the ability to focus Tier 2 Kepler gear.
  • Playing with a fireteam is strongly recommended; enemies on Fabled hit significantly harder than Legendary campaign.

What Is the Explore Kepler: Fabled Quest?

Explore Kepler: Fabled is a post-campaign quest in Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate expansion. It becomes available after completing the main Edge of Fate campaign and unlocking the Fabled World Tier on Kepler. The quest asks you to gather six Strangelets for the Altar of Relativity — the central vendor hub in Caldera — using a mix of open-world puzzle encounters and replayed campaign missions at higher difficulty.

Fabled difficulty is a significant step up from the Legendary campaign. Enemies have more health, hit harder, and the modifier pool includes Chaff (no radar) and elemental banes. You need a solid build and preferably a fireteam of two or three to get through the campaign mission portions efficiently. Solo is possible but will require patience and a strong survivability setup.

Completing the full quest rewards Matterspark IV, a Tier 4 weapon, the ability to focus Tier 2 Kepler gear at the Altar, and the Emissary Waft Emblem.

Important Rule – One Strangelet at a Time

Before anything else, understand this: you cannot carry two Strangelets simultaneously. After collecting one, return to the Caldera and deposit it into the Altar of Relativity before going after the next. If you complete a Fabled mission or a patrol encounter without depositing your first Strangelet, you will have to redo the encounter. This is the most common mistake players make on this quest.

Strangelet 1–4 – Campaign Mission Strangelets (Fabled Difficulty)

The first four Strangelets come from replaying a selection of Edge of Fate campaign missions at Fabled difficulty. These are the same missions you completed during the main story, but enemies are now significantly stronger. Look for the red mission banners on the Kepler map — each banner marks a campaign mission that has a Strangelet tied to its completion.

You can skip a lot of the traversal in these missions now that you can transform into Matterspark freely without the time restrictions that applied during the campaign. Use it to cut across terrain and reach objectives faster.

After completing each mission, a Strangelet will appear. Pick it up, return to the Caldera, and deposit it at the Altar before launching the next mission. Repeat this for all four campaign Strangelets before moving to the open-world encounters.

Tips for Fabled Campaign Missions

  • Power Level 150 is the recommended floor. Below this, enemies have a significant Power advantage that makes fights very slow and unforgiving.
  • Fallen Captains gain immunity phases. When a Captain raises its shield mid-fight, switch to your Matterspark Overcharge ability to break it — normal weapons will not work fast enough.
  • Revive tokens matter. Fabled missions are not Darkness Zones in all sections, but when you are in a restricted area, pay close attention to your revive count. Adjust your aggression based on how many tokens remain.
  • Use Fireteam Finder if playing solo. The in-game LFG tool under the roster screen can connect you with other Guardians working through the same quest steps.

Strangelet 5 – Outer Wastes (Open World)

The fifth Strangelet is a hidden open-world encounter in the Outer Wastes area of Kepler, marked by a large search zone in the top-left region of the map. A Fallen barrier blocks the Strangelet Capsule on a ledge, so you cannot just walk up and grab it. You need to complete a short puzzle first.

Step-by-Step – Outer Wastes Strangelet

  1. Fast travel to the Outer Steppes and run toward the Outer Wastes search area.
  2. Near the facility in the area, find a door protected by a laser grid. Behind the door is a Relocator target. There is a Relocator Cannon near the mission beacon on the far side of the facility.
  3. Pick up the Relocator Cannon. Shoot it through the gap in the laser-barred door at the target inside. The gap is small and the aim can be finicky — try jumping slightly as you fire to clear the laser grid.
  4. Return to where you picked up the Relocator Cannon. A teleporter portal has now appeared next to the mission beacon. Step through it.
  5. Inside the facility, drop through the hatch in the floor and transform into Matterspark to traverse the tunnel below.
  6. At the end of the tunnel, interact with the Fallen terminal. This unlocks part of the door sequence.
  7. Return to the surface. A rally banner has appeared and a second terminal is nearby. Activate the signal beacon at this terminal to begin the timed encounter.
  8. You have six minutes to defeat two Fallen Captains and a Walker. The Captains will raise immunity shields partway through — use Matterspark’s Overcharge to break them. Focus the Captains first, then switch to the Walker.
  9. When all three are down, the barrier around the Strangelet lifts. Grab the Strangelet and open the adjacent loot chest.
  10. Return to the Caldera and deposit the Strangelet at the Altar of Relativity before continuing.

If the timer expires before all three enemies are defeated, the encounter resets and you must start the fight over from the beginning. Prioritise the Captains quickly — the Walker’s DPS window is easier to manage once the Captains are gone.

Strangelet 6 – Curtilage Divide (Open World)

The sixth and final open-world Strangelet is in the Curtilage Divide area, located in the bottom-right corner of the Kepler map. This is the more complex of the two open-world encounters, involving Matter Realignment and platform manipulation before the boss fight. There is no timer on the boss this time, but mines add pressure throughout the fight.

Step-by-Step – Curtilage Divide Strangelet

  1. Head to the Curtilage Divide landing zone and travel south until you reach a large chamber filled with hanging platforms and cables. The Strangelet is visible on top of the central platform, shielded by a force field.
  2. Standing near the Strangelet, take note of three key things in the room: a lasered door in the bottom right (where the Relocator is), a Matter Realignment spore across the room, and a small elevated room at the top of the area.
  3. Go to the lasered door in the bottom right. Disable the barrier and collect the Relocator Cannon inside.
  4. Carry the Relocator to the Matter Realignment spore and interact with it. This grants you the ability to move the suspended platforms in the room.
  5. Rearrange the platforms to form a traversal path across the room. Use grapple or Matterspark to help with movement as needed.
  6. Head to the small room at the top of the area. Fire the Relocator at the target inside this room. A portal will appear on the final platform of the path you created.
  7. Step through the portal. Inside, activate the terminal to initiate a System Purge.
  8. Return to the Strangelet below. Rally at the banner and activate the system purge terminal directly beneath the shielded capsule.
  9. The boss fight begins. The boss — Riksis, Exile Marauder — spawns alongside a wave of Fallen Shanks and standard Fallen. There is no time limit, but the boss periodically summons splinter mines on the platforms around the room.
  10. Prioritise the mines when they appear — check the timer on each mine and defuse the shortest fuse first. If you are in a group, split up to handle mines on different platforms simultaneously. Mines typically have 20–25 seconds before detonating, but the countdown can vary.
  11. After the boss falls, the shield drops and you can collect the Strangelet Capsule. Return it to the Altar of Relativity to complete the open-world portion of the quest.
The Message on Fabled
The Message on Fabled

Final Step – The Message on Fabled

After all six Strangelets are deposited, the final step of the Explore Kepler: Fabled quest is to complete The Message — the final mission of the Edge of Fate campaign — on Fabled difficulty. This is the lengthiest mission in the expansion, featuring three boss fights back to back, and the combatants are at their most aggressive at Fabled tier.

Take your time, use rally banners between sections, and manage your revive tokens carefully. This is the fight where having a fireteam of two or three makes the biggest difference — the third boss in particular has phases that benefit heavily from players splitting attention between mechanics and damage.

Once The Message is cleared on Fabled, the quest is complete.

Explore Kepler: Fabled – Quest Rewards

Completing the full Explore Kepler: Fabled quest rewards:

  • Matterspark IV upgrade — the fourth and final upgrade to the Matterspark destination ability. Adds the ability to Jolt enemies on contact, grants Auto-Loading Holster functionality while in Matterspark form, and provides instant health restoration when you exit Matterspark. This is a significant quality-of-life upgrade for all Kepler exploration.
  • Tier 4 Hand Cannon — a curated high-tier Kepler weapon.
  • Tier 2 Kepler gear focusing — unlocks the ability to focus Tier 2 Kepler engrams at the Altar of Relativity, making targeted gear farming more efficient.
  • Emissary Waft Emblem — a cosmetic emblem tied to completing this quest.
  • Triumph progress — multiple Kepler and Edge of Fate Triumphs advance as you complete the quest steps.

After completing Explore Kepler: Fabled, the Mythic World Tier version of the same quest becomes available at Power Level 200+, with even greater challenge and Tier 5 rewards at the end. For information on reaching Power Level fast enough for these quests, see our power level guide.

General Tips for the Explore Kepler: Fabled Quest

  • Deposit every Strangelet before collecting the next one. This cannot be emphasised enough — losing a completed encounter because you forgot to deposit is the most avoidable frustration in this quest.
  • Reach Power Level 150 before starting. The difficulty gap between Legendary campaign and Fabled is sharp. Enemies at Fabled have significantly more health and deal more damage at lower power levels.
  • Matterspark is faster than running. Now that you can use it freely without a timer, transform into Matterspark for traversal across open zones to cut travel time between objectives.
  • Bring a grapple grenade or strong jump ability. The Curtilage Divide puzzle in particular involves vertical traversal where gap-crossing matters. A grapple grenade or double-jump build with strong air control helps.
  • Mines are the priority in the Curtilage Divide fight. The boss does not enrage, but mines detonate and can wipe your team if ignored. Split mine-defusing and boss damage between players in a fireteam.
  • Check the Qua Nilus II attunement before running Portal activities to fill your Kepler loot pool alongside quest progress. See our Qua Nilus II guide for best rolls to target.
