TL;DR
- The maximum Power Level in Destiny 2 is 550 — set with Monument of Triumph and not increasing further.
- New and returning players start at Power 10 but gear drops at 300+ for fast catch-up.
- Visit Ikora immediately for a free New Light kit that jumps every gear slot to 300 Power.
- Soft cap is 440 — almost any activity gets you there. Use Fireteam Ops Quickplay for the fastest run.
- After 440, push to 500 with Grade A Solo Ops and Fireteam Ops using score-boosting modifiers.
- From 500 to 550, Prime Engrams, weekly Grandmaster clears, and Pinnacle Ops raids push the final climb.
- Infusion costs Enhancement Cores below 200 Power. Above 200, use Unstable Cores from dismantled high-level gear.
- Run all three characters — account-wide Power tracking means alternate characters level up faster.
The Destiny 2 Power Level cap is 550 as of Monument of Triumph (Update 9.7.0, June 9, 2026). This is the permanent gear ceiling — Bungie has confirmed no further Power increases are planned since this is the game’s final live-service update. Whether you are a brand new Guardian starting at 10 Power or a returning player trying to push back to max as efficiently as possible, this guide covers every stage of the climb with the fastest methods at each bracket. How Does Power Level Work in Destiny 2 in 2026?
Power Level in Destiny 2 determines how much damage you deal and how much you take in Power-enabled activities. The higher your Power Level relative to the activity’s recommended level, the more damage you deal and the less you take. Activities below your Power Level feel easier. Activities above your Power Level — like Master raids or Grandmaster Nightfalls — require you to be close to the recommended Power to avoid a significant damage penalty.
Your overall Power Level is calculated as the average of all eight gear slots: Helmet, Arms, Chest, Legs, Class Item, Kinetic Weapon, Energy Weapon, and Heavy Weapon. The game tracks your highest Power item per slot across your equipped gear, your inventory, and your vault. Never dismantle the highest Power item you have in any slot — even if it has bad perks. At minimum, you can infuse it into a better roll later.
The Power system changed significantly with The Edge of Fate update in 2025. The old Powerful and Pinnacle gear tiers are gone. Instead, rewards now scale based on activity difficulty and your performance score during the run. Harder activities with higher modifier stacks drop gear at higher Power than easier runs, with no weekly lockout on how many times you can run them. This makes the grind faster and more consistent than the old weekly capped system.
What Are the Power Level Caps in Destiny 2?
There are three effective Power brackets to understand before you start grinding:
- Soft Cap — 440: Below 440, almost every activity in the game rewards gear above your current Power. World drops, playlist activities, and even blue engrams will increase your level consistently. This phase moves fast.
- Hard Cap — 500: Between 440 and 500, standard world drops stop giving Power increases. You need Grade A or higher activity completions from Portal activities — Solo Ops, Fireteam Ops, and Pinnacle Ops — to keep climbing. This is where modifier stacking and activity selection start to matter.
- Pinnacle Cap — 550: Above 500, only the highest-tier activity rewards — Prime Engrams, Grandmaster clears, raid encounters on Master difficulty, and specific weekly pinnacle sources — can push your Power level. Gains are slower and more RNG-dependent. Individual slots lagging behind your average become very noticeable here.
First Steps — What to Do Before You Start Grinding
Before touching any activity, do these two things immediately:
- Claim your free New Light kit from Ikora Rey in the Tower. This instantly raises every gear slot to 300 Power. It is the single biggest time-save in the entire power climb for new and returning players. If you are returning with existing gear above 300, your old items are the better starting point — Ikora’s kit only helps if your gear is below 300 across any slot.
- Check your vault for the highest-Power item in each slot. Your Power Level calculation includes vault items, so even unequipped gear sitting in storage counts toward your average. If a vault item is higher than what you are wearing, equip it before doing anything else.
Also keep in mind that your Power Level is tracked account-wide. If your Hunter reaches 450 Power, your Warlock and Titan will receive significantly boosted early drops to catch up quickly. Running all three characters at once is one of the most efficient ways to climb Power because each character gets three extra sets of activity rewards per week with an elevated baseline.
How to Reach Power Level 440 (Soft Cap) Fast
The soft cap is the easiest bracket to push through. At this stage, almost everything drops upgrades, so your goal is simply to play the fastest activities possible and collect as many drops as you can per hour.
Fireteam Ops Quickplay (Best Method)
Fireteam Ops Quickplay is the single fastest activity for the 300-to-440 bracket. It is matchmade, so you do not need to find a team. Runs are short — most complete in 10 to 15 minutes — and the activity consistently drops gear above your current Power. Weekly bonus rewards from Fireteam Ops also stack on top of normal drops during this phase. Simply queue and keep completing runs. Do not overthink activity selection here. Speed of completion matters more than difficulty at this stage.
Solo Ops (Best Solo Method)
If you prefer playing alone, Solo Ops in the Portal is the best alternative. Activities like Caldera and K1 Logistics are community favourites for speed — experienced players complete them in under five minutes per run. Each run drops gear, and running them back-to-back generates a steady stream of Power upgrades during the soft cap climb. There is no weekly cap on how many times you can run them, so this is a fully repeatable grind.
Tips for the 300–440 Bracket
- Do not spend time on optimization. Every drop is probably an upgrade at this stage. Equip the highest Power item per slot after each run and keep going.
- Do not dismantle gear below 200 Power. Blue drops can be infused into better items if they happen to be higher Power than what you have equipped in a slot.
- Run Distortions passively. If a destination is currently Distorted while you are playing, patrol activities in that zone give bonus Triumph progress and higher-tier drops alongside your normal grind. The Destiny 2 Strange Signal guide covers the full Distortions loop.
- Do not waste Infusion materials early. Below 200 Power, infusion costs Enhancement Cores only. Above 200, you need Unstable Cores earned by dismantling 200+ Power gear. Save your materials for slots that are significantly below your average rather than fine-tuning weapons you like the look of.
How to Reach Power Level 500 (Hard Cap) Fast
Once you pass 440, world drops stop giving Power increases. You are now entirely dependent on Portal activities at Grade A or higher to keep climbing. The key system change here is the Grade and modifier stack.
Understanding Activity Grades and Modifiers
Every Portal activity has a Grade from B to S+ that determines the Power of gear it drops. Higher grades equal higher Power drops. Each difficulty tier starts at a different baseline grade:
- Normal: Starts at Grade B.
- Advanced: Starts at Grade B+.
- Expert: Starts at Grade A.
- Master: Starts at Grade A+.
- Grandmaster: Starts at Grade S.
- Ultimate: Starts at Grade S+.
You can also add modifiers before launching an activity to boost the grade. Negative modifiers (Banes like Caltrops or Chill Touch) are largely low-risk since enemies die fast at this Power level, but they add score. Positive modifiers like Full Throttle (stacking damage buff for kills without dying) and Grappler (grappling hook traversal) significantly speed up runs and push grade higher. The goal between 440 and 500 is to hit Grade A or A+ on every run. You do not need to push all the way to S — just stay consistently at A rank for reliable Power upgrades.
Best Activities for 440–500
- Solo Ops on Expert or Master: Expert starts at Grade A automatically, so even without modifiers you are hitting the right reward tier. Caldera and K1 Logistics remain the fastest maps for experienced players. Select Expert, add one or two positive modifiers to push comfortably to A+, and run them back-to-back.
- Fireteam Ops on Advanced with modifiers: Advanced starts at B+, but stacking two or three modifiers gets you to A quickly. Fireteam Ops has matchmaking, making it the most accessible option if you do not want to solo this bracket.
- Pinnacle Ops (Encore Exotic Mission): If you have a fireteam, the Encore Exotic Mission in Pinnacle Ops is one of the fastest high-Grade completions available. A three-player group using Full Throttle, Grappler, and Slayer modifiers can push S rank efficiently, dropping some of the best Power gear available in this bracket.
Infusion Strategy for 440–500
Above 200 Power, infusion requires Unstable Cores. These drop by dismantling 200+ Power gear. The cost scales with how large the Power gap is between the item you are upgrading and the item you are feeding into it — a small gap costs fewer Cores than a large jump. This means you should infuse frequently in small increments rather than saving low-Power gear and making a large jump at once. Equip the best drop you get each run, then use Unstable Cores to bring any lagging slots up to match your average. Focus Cores on your weakest slots first.
How to Reach Power Level 550 (Pinnacle Cap) Fast
The 500-to-550 climb is the slowest and most RNG-dependent phase of Power progression. Standard Portal drops no longer increase your Power level here. You need Prime Engrams, high-difficulty weekly sources, and consistent high-grade completions to push through this bracket.
What Are Prime Engrams?
Prime Engrams are rare, high-powered drops that give a meaningful Power bump above 500. They drop randomly from any activity in the Portal at roughly a 5% drop rate per completion. They are the main source of Power upgrades between 500 and 550 and cannot be directly targeted or farmed — they just drop occasionally as you keep playing. The best way to maximise Prime Engram frequency is to play a variety of activities rather than spamming a single mission, since each unique activity type has its own independent drop chance.
Best Activities for 500–550
- Grade A Solo Ops runs: Even above 500, hitting Grade A consistently from Expert Solo Ops is the best repeatable source of Power drops outside of Prime Engrams. A single Prime Engram or Grandmaster clear can move you +2 or +3 Power, but Grade A runs keep drops coming in between those rare spikes.
- Weekly Grandmaster clears: Grandmaster difficulty starts at Grade S, which means every completion drops high-tier gear. These are the most efficient single sources of Power above 500 but require a capable fireteam. Runs take 30 to 60 minutes. Prioritize Grandmasters that you can complete consistently rather than the ones with the highest difficulty modifier if your team is still learning.
- Master raid encounters: Featured raids on Master difficulty drop Adept weapons and high-Power gear from each encounter. Running Master King’s Fall, Master Vow of the Disciple, or another featured Master raid on three characters gives you multiple Power drops per week from an activity that also rewards raid-exclusive loot. For the best raids to run each week, check Destiny 2 raids in order and the all raid loot tables guide.
- Pinnacle Ops (Encore on Master with S-rank modifiers): Master Encore with a full modifier stack targeting S rank is one of the highest-reward-per-hour activities in the game above 500. Use Full Throttle, Grappler, Slayer, and one or two manageable Banes to push the grade as high as possible.
- Zavala Armory missions: Weekly Zavala Armory missions are a guaranteed Power bump source that resets each Tuesday. Always complete these on your highest-Power character first, then repeat on your alternate characters for additional Power drops with the account-wide tracking advantage.
Slot Equalisation — The Most Important Tip Above 500
Above 500, the single biggest mistake players make is continuing to chase upgrades for slots that are already ahead of their average. If your helmet is at 510 but your legs are at 490, every Pinnacle drop you spend on the helmet is wasted. Your Power Level average only moves when your lowest slots come up.
Check your weakest slots after every session. If your boots, class item, or any armor piece is significantly below your average, shift all your activity focus to sources that can reward that specific slot. Many Portal activities tell you which gear slot they reward before you launch them. Use that information. Bringing one lagging slot from 490 to 510 raises your overall average by more than pushing an already-maxed slot any further.
How Does Infusion Work Above Power 200?
Infusion lets you transfer the Power Level of a higher-Power item into a lower-Power item you prefer to use, keeping the perks of the preferred item while gaining the Power of the sacrificed one. This is how you keep god-roll weapons and favourite armor pieces relevant as your Power Level climbs.
Above 200 Power, infusion requires Unstable Cores and Glimmer. Unstable Cores drop by dismantling any 200+ Power gear. The cost is based on the Power gap between the item you are upgrading and the material you are feeding into it — smaller gaps are cheaper. Save your Unstable Cores for meaningful upgrades rather than fine-tuning items that are only one or two Power below your current average.
Legendary Shards and Planetary Materials are no longer required for infusion as of Monument of Triumph. If you have these currencies in your inventory, you can exchange them for other useful currencies with Rahool in the Tower. For weapons specifically, the Destiny 2 Tier 5 weapon upgrade guide covers how to push crafted weapons to their maximum potential separately from the Power Level system.
Do You Actually Need to Reach 550 Power?
For most content in Destiny 2, no. The vast majority of activities — including normal raids, dungeons, strikes, and story content — are accessible at 300 Power or above. Fireteam Power also helps lower-level players participate in harder activities by syncing their effective Power to within a few levels of the highest-powered player in the group.
550 Power is necessary for only a small slice of content: Grandmaster Nightfalls, Master raids, and other activities where the Power deficit against enemies is significant enough to noticeably reduce your damage output and survivability. If you are farming King’s Fall, Vow of the Disciple, or other featured raids for Tier 5 loot and god rolls during this era of Monument of Triumph, you do not need to be at 550 to participate — but being close to 500 makes Master difficulty much more manageable.
