Destiny 2 where the Strange Signal leads is one of the most confusing steps in the Distortions quest added with the Monument of Triumph update in 2026. The game gives you almost no guidance. This guide explains every step clearly, including what to do when the map marker doesn’t show up.
- The Strange Signal comes from collecting 50 Strange Matter on a Distorted destination
- Distortions rotate every hour — check the red icon on your Director map before landing
- Don’t land if the Distortion timer shows less than 5 minutes remaining
- The Strange Signal location is dynamic — it’s different for every player and every run
- Follow the white diamond waypoint on your HUD to the distorted zone entrance
- Defeat the Shield of the Distorted boss, then loot the chest for Tier 5 gear and Ascendant Alloys
- The activity is repeatable — collect more Strange Matter after the first clear to run it again
What Is the Destiny 2 Distortions Quest
Distortions is a new patrol activity added in the Monument of Triumph update. Every hour, one destination in the solar system becomes Distorted. While active, enemies hit harder, public events drop better loot, and you can collect a resource called Strange Matter.
To start the quest, speak to Ikora Rey in the Tower. She’ll send you to Lodi, who stands at the far end of the Tower Bazaar. Talk to Lodi to unlock the Distortions quest and learn the basic loop.
The full loop is: find the Distorted planet, complete the Distortion Breach, collect 50 Strange Matter, follow the Strange Signal, defeat the boss, open the chest.
How to Find the Distorted Destination
Open your Director screen. One planet will have a red circular icon next to it. That’s the active Distortion. Hover over it to see the countdown timer.
Important: If the timer shows less than 5 minutes, do not land. The Distortion will rotate to a new planet before you can finish farming. You’ll be sent back to orbit with nothing.
Wait for the next Distortion cycle, then land fresh. Each Distortion lasts about one hour before moving to a different destination.
How to Complete the Distortion Breach

Once you land on the active Distorted planet, look for a Public Event. Complete it as normal. You don’t need to make it Heroic at this stage, though Heroic completions drop Tier 4 rewards instead of Tier 3.
After the Public Event ends, a large red pillar of light will rise in the center of the zone. This starts the Distortion Breach wave defense encounter.

Survive the waves of enemies. At certain points, the game will prompt you to “calm the flood.” When this happens, look around the arena for three glowing red crystals. Destroy all three. This drops enemy shields and lets you continue the encounter.
Once all waves are cleared, a chest will appear. Open it to collect your first batch of Strange Matter.
How to Farm Strange Matter Fast

You need exactly 50 Strange Matter to trigger the Strange Signal. Strange Matter drops from three sources on the active Distorted planet:
- Opening destination chests in the patrol zone
- Collecting resource nodes scattered around the map
- Killing Distorted enemies
Strange Matter can only drop on the currently Distorted planet. It won’t collect anywhere else.
The fastest method is to run Public Events, loot every chest you can find, and kill as many Distorted enemies as possible. You’ll need to stay on the planet for several events to reach 50. Always attempt Heroic Public Events — they drop Tier 4 rewards and still count toward Strange Matter farming.
Before you start farming, open your inventory and select Distortions attunement. Set it to the weapon type you want. This increases your chances of getting that specific weapon from the reward chest at the end.
Destiny 2 Strange Signal Location — Where It Appears on Your Map

The moment you collect your 50th piece of Strange Matter, it automatically converts into a Strange Signal in your inventory. Open your destination map right away.
Look for a small circular bubble marker labeled Strange Signal. This is not a fixed map location. It spawns dynamically based on which planet was active when your Strange Matter converted. There are no coordinates to look up online. Your marker will be different from anyone else’s.
Click the marker to track it. A white diamond waypoint will appear on your HUD. Follow it.
Fix for missing Strange Signal marker: If you have 50 Strange Matter but no marker appears on your map, return to orbit and re-land on the same planet. This forces the game to refresh the dynamic map markers. Most players who think the quest is bugged just need to do this.
How to Follow the Strange Signal to the Boss

Follow the white diamond waypoint on your HUD. Walk toward the marked area. The game may display a “Near Objective” message as you get close.
When you arrive, look for the Monument of Triumph DLC icon in the environment. That marks the entrance to the distorted zone. Ignore every other portal you see. Entering the wrong portal wastes time and resets your progress for that encounter.
Enter the marked distorted zone to start the encounter.
How to Defeat the Shield of the Distorted Boss
Inside the zone, clear all the regular enemies first. Don’t rush the boss while adds are alive. They’ll interrupt your damage constantly if you leave them.
Once the room is clean, focus on the Shield of the Distorted boss. This is a patrol-tier encounter. It is not a raid boss. Solo players can finish it without much trouble.
Best weapons for the Shield of the Distorted:
- Sniper rifles — best option for sustained damage from a safe distance
- Linear fusion rifles — strong burst damage if you have the ammo
- Rocket launchers or machine guns — good for closing the fight quickly
Stay at range. The boss has annoying close-range attack patterns that are easy to avoid if you keep your distance. Use cover between damage phases if needed. There are no special mechanics that require a fireteam. Most players clear this solo.
After the boss dies, a reward chest will appear near its spawn point. Open it to collect your loot.
Destiny 2 Strange Signal Rewards — What You Get
The chest at the end of the boss encounter drops high-tier loot. Confirmed rewards include:
- Tier 5 Legendary weapons
- Ascendant Alloys
- Distortions-specific weapon drops (set attunement before you start to target a specific gun)
Note: Drop rates and hard caps are still being verified by the community as of 2026. The activity is confirmed repeatable. After opening the chest, continue farming Strange Matter on the next Distorted planet to trigger another Strange Signal and run the encounter again.
How to Farm the Strange Signal Loop Repeatedly
The Distortions activity is not a one-time event. After your first clear, the loop resets. Here’s the fastest repeatable path:
- Check the Director for the next active Distorted planet
- Land with enough time remaining (5+ minutes on the timer)
- Set your Strange Signal as your active waypoint the moment your Strange Matter converts — don’t wait
- Follow the arrow directly without exploring unrelated areas
- Clear adds, kill boss, open chest, repeat
Most time in this activity is lost to wandering, not the encounter itself. The boss fight is fast. The travel and searching waste the most time if you don’t track the waypoint immediately.
Destiny 2 Distortions Tips and Common Mistakes
Don’t land with under 5 minutes on the Distortion timer. You won’t have time to farm and will get rotated out mid-run.
Don’t use fixed coordinates from other players. The Strange Signal location is instance-based. No one else’s coordinates will work for you.
Don’t enter random portals near the marked area. Only the portal marked by the Monument of Triumph DLC icon is the right one.
Do go Heroic on Public Events. The extra tier of loot is worth the extra effort every time.
Do set your attunement before farming. Switching mid-session may reset your targeting preferences.
