What Are Distortions in Destiny 2?
Distortions are a new type of patrol event introduced with the Monument of Triumph update. Every hour, one destination in the Sol System becomes Distorted. The sky tears open, the environment changes visually, and enemies in that area become tougher and more aggressive.
While a Distortion is active, all activity rewards on that destination are bumped up by one gear tier. Standard Public Events that normally drop Tier 3 loot now drop Tier 4, and Heroic completions that usually give Tier 4 now have a real shot at Tier 5. This makes Distortions one of the most efficient ways to target high-tier destination weapons and armor without running endgame content.
The goal is straightforward. Land on the active Distorted planet, run Public Events, complete the Distortion Breach follow-up encounter, collect Strange Matter, follow the Strange Signal to a hidden boss, and open the reward chest. Each step in that loop gives you loot and feeds into the next step.
Destiny 2 Distortions Rotation Order
The Distortion rotates to a new destination every hour, on the hour. The confirmed rotation order is:
- Cosmodrome
- European Dead Zone (EDZ)
- Dreaming City
- Savathûn’s Throne World
- Moon
- Europa
- Nessus
After Nessus, the cycle loops back to Cosmodrome and starts again. The rotation was confirmed by the community across multiple full cycles and anchored against live in-game readings. If Bungie changes the order at any point, check your Destinations screen — the active planet always has a red glowing icon with a visible countdown timer.
Important tip: If the timer shows less than 5 minutes remaining on the current Distortion, do not land there. You will not have enough time to farm Strange Matter and complete the loop before the Distortion shifts to the next planet. Wait for the rotation to hit the destination you need instead.
How to Check the Active Distortion
Open your Destinations screen (the Director). One planet will have a red circular icon next to it — that is the active Distortion. Hovering over it shows you the countdown timer for when the Distortion rotates to the next destination.
You can also track the rotation manually using the order listed above. Once you know which planet is currently active, you can predict exactly what is coming next and plan your farming session accordingly.
Distortions Loot Table by Destination
Each Distorted destination drops from that planet’s specific weapon and armor loot pool. The quality of the drops is boosted by one tier while the Distortion is active, so timing your farming to the right planet matters if you are chasing a specific weapon or armor set.
Below is what each destination brings to the table during a Distortion window:
Cosmodrome
The Cosmodrome drops weapons and armor from its patrol loot pool, which includes Kinetic and Energy weapons originally tied to the Old Russia zone. It is also one of the fastest destinations to route through, with a relatively compact layout compared to larger zones like the EDZ. Good starting point for players new to Distortion farming. European Dead Zone (EDZ)
The EDZ is the largest patrol zone in the game. It has the most sub-zones and the longest travel times between Public Events. The EDZ loot pool is one of the broadest, covering a wide variety of weapon types. Because of the size, consider splitting your EDZ Distortion farming across multiple rotation windows rather than trying to complete everything in one hour. Dreaming City
The Dreaming City drops weapons and armor from the Forsaken-era loot pool — some of the most visually striking gear in Destiny 2 history. Activities here include the Blind Well, which also awards tiered rewards during a Distortion window. The zone is compact enough that you can clear Strange Matter and follow the Strange Signal comfortably within an hour. Savathûn’s Throne World
Throne World drops weapons and armor from the Witch Queen patrol pool. Terminal Overload — the zone’s unique patrol activity — also distributes tiered rewards during a Distortion and is worth completing alongside standard Public Events. The area has strong weapon variety in its loot pool.
Moon
The Moon drops Shadow Keep-era weapons and armor. Its unique activities include Altars of Sorrow, which also rewards tiered loot during a Distortion window. The Moon has solid routing — four sub-zones with fast travel points — and is a manageable destination to clear within the hour. Europa
Europa drops Beyond Light-era weapons and armor. The zone features Fallen and Vex enemies in a vertical, blizzard-heavy environment. Nessus
Nessus drops Curse of Osiris-era weapons and armor, including some iconic reprised weapons from the early Destiny 2 era. It is also the destination where the Forcible Disconnect Triumph takes place, so if you need that Triumph you can combine it with a Nessus Distortion run. Distortion Weapons and the Carrion Munitions Origin Trait
All weapons that drop during Distortion events share the Carrion Munitions origin trait. This trait spawns explosive insectoid robots that chase enemies when you defeat a powerful combatant. It is a chaotic and fun trait for add-clear situations, and it makes Distortion weapons feel distinct from other loot pools.

Every eligible weapon in the pool is listed there. You can also check individual entries on light.gg for community-rated perk choices before you commit to attuning for a specific weapon.
Use the Attunement system to target a specific Distortion weapon before you start farming. Set it before your first run and do not switch mid-session — attuning increases the drop rate for your chosen weapon throughout the session. How to Farm Distortions Efficiently
The core loop for Distortions goes like this:
Step 1 – Pick Up the Distortions Quest
If you have not started yet, speak to Ikora Rey in the Tower, then head to Lodi at the far end of the Tower Bazaar. He hands out the Distortions quest and explains the basic loop. Complete this step once and the activity is permanently unlocked.
Step 2 – Land on the Active Distorted Destination
Check the Destinations screen for the red icon. Land on that planet with enough time left in the window — at least 20 to 30 minutes is comfortable for a full loop. Under 5 minutes is not worth landing.
Step 3 – Complete Public Events and the Distortion Breach
Complete the standard Public Event on the destination first. After the event ends, stay in the area. A red glowing pillar will build and a new Distortion Breach encounter will begin. The Breach is a wave defense — kill enemy waves, and destroy three glowing red corruption crystals between waves when prompted. You do not need to succeed to progress the quest, but completing it earns a chest with early Strange Matter and the Strange Multiplier buff, which increases how much Strange Matter you collect for the rest of the session.
Always attempt Heroic Public Events. During a Distortion, a standard Public Event drops Tier 4 rewards and a Heroic drops Tier 5 — that is the best free loot in the game outside of endgame content.
Step 4 – Farm 50 Strange Matter
Strange Matter drops from three sources on the active Distorted planet:
- Completing Public Events
- Opening destination chests and collecting resource nodes
- Killing Distorted Enemies in the patrol zone
You need exactly 50 Strange Matter to advance. It automatically converts into a Strange Crystal the moment you hit 50, which then triggers the Strange Signal objective.
Step 5 – Follow the Strange Signal
Open your Destinations screen and look for a small circular bubble marker labelled Strange Signal. Track it and follow the white directional arrow on your HUD. The location is dynamic and spawns based on which planet you were on when the Crystal formed — no fixed coordinates exist, so ignore guides that give you specific map spots. Follow your own marker.

Step 6 – Defeat the Boss and Open the Chest
The boss is called the Shield of the Distorted. It is a patrol-tier encounter — not a raid boss — and most players clear it solo without much trouble. Stay at range to avoid its close-range attack patterns. Once it is dead, a reward chest spawns nearby. Open it to collect your Distortion weapon drop, often alongside materials like Ascendant Alloy.
The activity is fully repeatable. After opening the chest, keep farming Strange Matter on the next Distortion window to run the loop again.
Distortion Reward Tier Summary
- Standard Public Event (normal): Tier 3 (chance at Tier 4 or 5)
- Heroic Public Event (normal): Tier 4 (chance at Tier 5)
- Standard Public Event (during Distortion): Tier 4 (chance at Tier 5)
- Heroic Public Event (during Distortion): Tier 5 guaranteed
- Strange Signal boss chest: High-tier Legendary weapon drop + chance at Ascendant Alloy
The tier system connects to the broader Tier 5 weapons system in Monument of Triumph. Tier 5 weapons have enhanced perks, enhanced mods, and Combat Flair cosmetics — they are the best version of any Legendary weapon in the game.
Tips for Efficient Distortion Farming
- Always attune before landing. Set your weapon attunement to whatever Distortion weapon you want before you start. Do not switch mid-session.
- Watch the timer. Under 5 minutes left on a Distortion window is not enough time to complete a full loop. Wait for the next rotation.
- Prioritize Heroic Public Events. The tier upgrade during a Distortion makes Heroic completions drop Tier 5 — the best loot available from open-world content.
- Do not enter random portals. Only the portal marked by the Monument of Triumph DLC icon is the right entrance to the Strange Signal encounter.
