Ever Beneath the Waves is a hidden World Quest added in Genshin Impact 7.0. It is set in the Volkodlak Tundra sub-region of Snezhnaya and involves rescuing a long-forgotten fae named Chulkaturin who has been trapped beneath the ice for a very long time. The quest has no map marker until you physically walk into the area, which makes it easy to miss entirely. It is also the starting point of a three-part questline — completing it unlocks The Sunken Ship Sailed Past, Ringing No Bells in Morepesok and eventually In the Tranquility of Cycles at Tidesong Cavern. This is one of Snezhnaya’s more emotionally driven quest chains, so it is well worth doing. If you are new to the region, our guide on how to go to Snezhnaya covers how to get started, and you can also check out the On One Side a Palace, On the Other a Tomb quest guide for the region’s main story chain.

Where to Find Ever Beneath the Waves in Genshin Impact
The quest is located in Volkodlak Tundra, northeast of Sretomorozsk. There are two Teleport Waypoints flanking the area — one to the northeast and one to the northwest. Either one works as a starting point.
The area you are looking for is a frozen lake section with a broken ship near the shore. Look for a metal pipe sticking out of a large block of ice surrounded by frozen water — that is the key landmark. The quest does not appear on your map until you physically walk into the zone. As soon as you approach the rear of the ship or the frozen house behind it, the quest auto-triggers.
There are no prerequisite quests for this one. Players can unlock Ever Beneath the Waves as soon as they reach the target location in Volkodlak Tundra — it is not locked behind any prerequisite quest found in Snezhnaya. So if you are exploring Volkodlak Tundra early, you can pick this up right away.
Ever Beneath the Waves Quest Walkthrough
The quest has three main objectives. It is short but has one mechanical step that trips players up, so read through before you start.

Step 1 – Find the Source of the Voice
When you walk into the zone, Paimon notices a faint voice calling for help. The source is not immediately obvious. Head to the large chunk of ice directly behind the ship. You are looking for the big pile of ice with the iron pipe sticking out of it. Walk close to it and a conversation between the Traveler and the Voice Beneath the Ice triggers automatically.
The voice belongs to Chulkaturin, a fae who has been sealed beneath the ice for an extraordinarily long time. He tells you the frozen lake has trapped him, and he cannot get free on his own. He asks you to rid the lake of all the brash ice so his cabin can float back to the surface.
Step 2 – Clear the Brash Ice in the Area
Brash ice is the chunky, breakable ice scattered across the frozen lake surface around the large ice block. You need to destroy enough of it to trigger the next phase. Any normal attack works — there is no special element or mechanic required here.
To speed things up, look for the explosive barrels scattered around the large ice chunk. Hitting those barrels causes them to detonate and destroy a wider area of brash ice around them. Use barrels first, then mop up the remaining ice patches with normal attacks.
Once you destroy enough ice, a short cutscene plays. The large ice block flips over, and a Wooden Cabin is revealed floating on the water’s surface. Chulkaturin was trapped inside his own house beneath the ice the whole time.
Step 3 – Bring the Wooden Cabin to Shore
This is the step that confuses most players. Chulkaturin asks you to drag his cabin to the shore, but he cannot steer it himself. The method is the Grapple Gun Construct from the Prime Ice Construct menu.
Here is how to do it step by step:
- Open the Prime Ice Construct menu (press T on PC by default)
- Select the Grapple Construct and place it at the quest marker position on shore
- The Wooden Cabin will automatically be pulled toward the Grapple as long as it is close enough to the cabin’s current position
- If the cabin does not move after placing the Grapple, the cabin is out of range. Stand on top of the cabin itself and place the next Grapple from there to get a closer anchor point
- You may need to place two Grapples total to pull the cabin all the way to the marked shore position
The cabin slowly drags itself toward each Grapple anchor. Move with it and place the next Grapple at the next quest marker once the first pull is complete. Once the Wooden Cabin reaches the shore, a long dialogue cutscene plays.
For a more detailed look at how the Grapple Construct works across Snezhnaya, see our guide on how to remove and use the Grapple in Gunfire in the Silent Lands.

What Happens After the Cabin Reaches Shore
When the cabin arrives, a lengthy lore cutscene plays. Chulkaturin speaks at length about who he is and why he ended up trapped beneath the ice. He is a fae who lived near this lake long before the land became what it is now. He was sealed away and forgotten. He thanks you for freeing him and rewards you with a Precious Chest that spawns nearby after the conversation ends.
The quest then marks as complete. At this point, Chulkaturin mentions there is still something left for him to take care of, hinting at further business ahead.

What Comes Next – The Full Chulkaturin Questline
Ever Beneath the Waves is the first chapter of a three-part story involving Chulkaturin. The second quest, The Sunken Ship Sailed Past, Ringing No Bells, is located in Morepesok in the Everfrozen Earth region of Snezhnaya, and is unlocked by completing Ever Beneath the Waves. To trigger it, travel to the Morepesok docks and approach the Wooden Cabin floating nearby. Chulkaturin will recognize you from this quest and ask for your help rebuilding his house. That quest involves collecting reinforcement materials and using the Grapple Construct mechanic again.
The third and final chapter is In the Tranquility of Cycles, located at Tidesong Cavern. This quest unlocks after completing both Ever Beneath the Waves and The Sunken Ship Sailed Past, Ringing No Bells, and only appears in the quest menu once you physically visit the quest location at Tidesong Cavern. This final chapter brings Chulkaturin’s story to a close and delivers the most impactful lore beat of the three quests.
The full questline is one of the hidden storytelling highlights of Snezhnaya. None of the three quests show up on the map until you walk to them, so they are easy to skip — but each one is short and the payoff is meaningful. If you are doing a complete Snezhnaya exploration run, add all three to your checklist.
Tips and Common Issues
- Quest not triggering? Make sure you walk all the way to the rear of the ship or directly to the large ice block with the pipe. The trigger zone is tight. Walk right up to the ice and stand next to it.
- Cabin not moving after Grapple placement? The cabin has a limited pull range. If it does not budge, jump on top of the cabin and place the Grapple from there. That puts the anchor within the cabin’s range and starts the drag.
- Use the explosive barrels first. They make the ice-clearing step much faster. Look for the brown barrels sitting on the ice around the large central block and hit them from a distance.
- Do not skip the dialogue. Chulkaturin’s story is one of the more interesting pieces of Snezhnaya lore. It also contains hints about what he needs from you in the follow-up quests, so listening saves confusion later.
- Grab the Precious Chest before leaving. It spawns right near the shore after the cutscene ends. It does not move, but it is easy to walk away without noticing it appeared.
After this quest, you can work through the rest of Snezhnaya’s hidden content.
