Mako Kemara is one of the most talked-about new characters in Gears of War: E-Day — not just for his personality, but for what happens to him. He’s the happy-go-lucky heavy weapons twin who charges into every fight without thinking twice, and he makes an impression fast. His introduction scene — defending a grocery store with a Vulcan gun in the middle of the apocalypse — instantly won players over before the game had even been out for a day.
This guide covers everything you need to know about Mako Kemara — his full character profile, his story in E-Day’s campaign, his relationship with twin brother Manu, how to unlock his free Theta Squad Mako skin, and a step-by-step breakdown of exactly what the unlock requires.
Who Is Mako Kemara in Gears of War E-Day?
Private Mako Kemara is a COG Army Gear and part of Theta Squad, specifically the decorated Pahanu Bayonets brigade of the Royal Tyran Infantry. He and his older twin brother Manu both hail from the South Island of Weilehi — they enlisted together, fought together, and serve in the same squad.
Mako’s role in the squad is heavy weapons. He has a natural talent for it and a personality that matches — he’s impulsive, enthusiastic, quick on his feet, and about as likely to think before acting as he is to hand over his Vulcan Gatling Gun. His instincts are usually right in the moment. It’s the aftermath that tends to get complicated.
He is an NPC throughout the main campaign. His Theta Squad Mako skin is unlocked through a free Foundations challenge that you can complete at any time, after which he becomes available as a playable character in Horde Siege and Versus multiplayer.
Mako Kemara Character Profile
- Full Name: Mako Kemara
- Rank: Private
- Faction: COG Army — Royal Tyran Infantry
- Unit: Theta Squad — Pahanu Bayonets brigade
- Specialty: Heavy weapons
- Homeland: Weilehi, South Islands
- Twin Brother: Manu Kemara
- Character Type: NPC in campaign, playable in multiplayer
- Voice Actor: Temapare Hodson
Mako is the younger twin, and everyone can tell. He is happy-go-lucky in a way that makes him magnetic — the kind of person who finds something funny in situations that should be terrifying. His impulsive nature keeps him quick on his feet in combat, which is exactly what you want from a heavy weapons specialist. It also regularly puts him in situations his big brother has to pull him out of.
That dynamic between the twins is one of E-Day’s best character relationships. Manu enlisted purely because Mako did, and because someone needs to be the responsible one. The combination of Mako’s recklessness and Manu’s steady, watchful presence gives them a warmth that makes them stand out in a cast full of battle-hardened veterans.

Is Mako Kemara a New Character?
Yes — completely. Mako Kemara is a brand-new character created specifically for Gears of War: E-Day. He has no prior appearances in any Gears of War game, novel, or comic. E-Day is his first and only appearance in the franchise to date. The Gears of War fandom wiki lists his first appearance as Gears of War: E-Day with nothing before it.
Mako Kemara’s Role in the E-Day Campaign
Mako’s campaign story is one of the most emotionally charged in E-Day, and it ends on a note that hits hard. Here is a complete breakdown — including spoilers for his fate.
The Pay n Save Store — First Meeting
Mako’s introduction in the campaign is already memorable before you even know his name. On the night of Emergence Day, he is separated from his squad in downtown Kalona and ends up alone at a Pay n Save store, holding off wave after wave of Locust with a Vulcan Gatling Gun. The scene — one Gear with a heavy weapon defending a grocery store in the middle of the apocalypse — instantly establishes who he is without needing much dialogue. He’s effective, he’s outnumbered, and he is absolutely not going to stop.
When his ammunition runs dry and a group of Feral Wretches starts closing in, Bravo Squad led by Sergeant Marcus Fenix arrives just in time. Mako joins up with them from that point forward.
Community reaction to this scene has been overwhelmingly positive. Players noted that him going on a food run for a child in the middle of the invasion — another beat in his introduction — is exactly the kind of human moment that makes E-Day’s cast feel real.
Theta Squad
Mako is part of Theta Squad, which falls under Captain Akila Grey’s wider command structure during the battle of Kalona. He and Manu serve together as part of the Pahanu Bayonets brigade. Theta Squad also includes Tai Kaliso during the E-Day timeline, giving the squad a strong and recognisable identity within the larger cast of Gears fighting to hold the city.
The Drawbridge — Mako’s Death
Warning: major campaign spoiler below.
Mako Kemara is killed during E-Day’s climax. As Bravo Squad fights to clear a path for the CNV Resolute — the dry-docked carrier being used to evacuate thousands of survivors from Kalona — they must open a drawbridge to allow the ship through. Svore Vraahk, the main Locust antagonist, destroys the bridge’s control system, forcing Bravo Squad to reach the other control room across the river.
In the fighting at the drawbridge, Mako is killed by Vraahk. A devastated Manu carries his twin brother’s body back to the ship aboard a King Raven piloted by Gill Gettner. The loss lands hard — both for Manu and for players who have spent the game watching the two of them look out for each other.
His death is recorded on the Gears of War fandom wiki as occurring on 10 Fall 0 A.E., which is the date of E-Day in the Sera calendar.

Mako Kemara Voice Actor
Mako Kemara is voiced by Temapare Hodson, confirmed in the Gears of War fandom wiki’s behind-the-scenes section for the character. Hodson’s performance brings exactly the right energy to Mako — quick, warm, and carrying the easy humour of someone who hasn’t yet learned to be afraid of anything.
Mako Kemara Skin in Gears of War E-Day
Mako Kemara currently has one skin in Gears of War: E-Day, and it is completely free:
Theta Squad Mako (Free — Foundations Challenge)
How to Unlock: Unlock and equip a Weapon Mod, an Armor Mod, and a Tactical Gear Mod on any class.
The Theta Squad Mako skin is part of E-Day’s permanent Foundations Challenges — a set of introductory objectives that never expire and cover the core systems of both Horde Siege and Versus. This means there is no time limit on this unlock. You can complete it at any pace after launch.
The name references Theta Squad, the unit Mako and Manu serve in during the campaign. It’s also the same naming convention used for the Theta Squad Manu skin (unlocked through a different Foundations challenge) and Theta Squad Tai (unlocked during Act 1 of the Campaign).

How to Unlock Theta Squad Mako — Step by Step
The unlock has three requirements. All three must be completed — unlocking alone is not enough, you also need to equip each mod. Here is exactly what to do:
Step 1 — Unlock a Weapon Mod
Weapon Mods unlock through Horde Siege class progression. Play Horde Siege matches to earn Class XP for your chosen class, and the first Weapon Mod will unlock at an early class level. You do not need to reach a high level — the first available mod is enough.
Once it unlocks, go to your Horde Siege loadout and equip the Weapon Mod to your class. Having it unlocked without equipping it does not count.
Step 2 — Unlock an Armor Mod
Armor Mods also come from Horde Siege class progression. Continue playing Horde Siege and your class will unlock an Armor Mod as you level up. Again, once unlocked, go to your loadout and equip the Armor Mod.
Step 3 — Unlock a Tactical Gear Mod
Tactical Gear Mods follow the same path — Horde Siege class XP and levelling up unlocks them. Equip it in your loadout the same way.
Once all three are unlocked and equipped, the Theta Squad Mako skin triggers automatically. Check the Barracks — it will be available immediately with no additional steps. For a deeper look at how mods work across all classes, see our All Mods List and How to Unlock More Weapon Mod Slots guides.
Tips for Unlocking Theta Squad Mako Quickly
- Pick one class and focus on it first. All three mods can come from the same class — you do not need to play multiple classes to unlock the skin. Find a class you enjoy and level it up.
- Play Blitz missions. Shorter playlist, faster matches, more Class XP per hour. Mod unlocks come at early class levels so you do not need to grind far.
- Equip each mod as soon as it unlocks. The trigger checks whether each mod is equipped, not just unlocked. Do not wait until you have all three — equip them one by one as they arrive.
- This is a Foundations Challenge. It never expires, so there is no rush. But if you want it early, one focused Horde Siege session is usually enough to unlock all three mods on a single class.
Mako and Manu — The Kemara Twins
Mako and Manu Kemara are one of E-Day’s most memorable character pairings. They are twins from the same island, enlisted together, serve in the same squad, and their relationship drives some of the game’s most human moments. Mako is the spark — impulsive, brave, funny. Manu is the anchor — steady, watchful, reluctantly following his brother into every situation he creates.
Their contrast is part of what makes them work. Manu didn’t choose the military — he chose Mako, and the military came with it. That makes their bond feel earned rather than convenient, and Mako’s death in the campaign hits harder because of how clearly Manu has always been the one trying to keep him safe.
Their skin names reflect the squad they share: Theta Squad Mako and Theta Squad Manu. If you’re collecting both, the Manu skin has its own unlock method — using each class’s Tactical Gear 10 times each in Horde Siege — covered in our Quentin Michaelson guide’s related links section.
