Who Is Gorou in Genshin Impact?
Gorou is a 4-star Geo Bow character from Inazuma, introduced in Version 2.3 alongside Arataki Itto. He is the general of Watatsumi Island’s resistance forces and is deeply trusted and respected by his subordinates. In battle, Gorou fights with complete loyalty to his allies — and his kit reflects that perfectly.
Gorou is the only character in Genshin Impact who provides a dedicated DEF buff to the entire team. This makes him irreplaceable in Geo teams built around DEF-scaling characters like Itto, Noelle, and Albedo. His Elemental Skill plants a General’s War Banner that grants stacking buffs based on how many Geo characters are on the team. With three Geo characters (including Gorou himself), the banner provides DEF bonus, interruption resistance, and Geo DMG bonus all at once.
He takes very little field time and requires minimal investment compared to most supports. You swap to him, use his Skill and Burst, and swap back out. The entire team benefits from his buffs without him needing to stay on field.
Gorou Pros and Cons
Pros:
- The only character in the game who buffs DEF for teammates — irreplaceable in Mono Geo teams.
- Provides DEF bonus, interruption resistance, and Geo DMG bonus all from one Skill.
- Very low investment required — he does not need many resources to function.
- Easy to play — just swap in, use Skill and Burst, swap out.
- A free Favonius Warbow from the first Archon Quest is his best F2P weapon.
- His C4 adds healing, removing the need for a dedicated healer in Geo teams.
Cons:
- Extremely limited outside of Geo teams — his buffs only work for Geo characters.
- Low personal damage output — he is purely a support.
- His General’s War Banner is a static field (Skill only) and requires characters to stand inside it to benefit.
- High Energy cost for his Burst — needs Energy Recharge investment.
- Most of his best utility is locked behind his Constellations, especially C4 and C6.
Gorou Abilities and Skills
Normal Attack – Ripping Fang Fletching
Gorou performs up to four consecutive shots with his Bow. His Charged Attack builds up stone crystals on the arrowhead and releases a Geo DMG shot when fully charged. His Plunge Attack fires a shower of arrows in the air and deals AoE DMG on landing.
Gorou’s Normal Attacks are almost never used in a support role. His personal damage is minimal and leveling Normal Attacks is the lowest possible priority.
Elemental Skill – Inuzaka All-Round Defense
This is Gorou’s most important ability. He deals AoE Geo DMG and places a General’s War Banner at his location. You can hold the button to aim and place the banner somewhere specific.
The War Banner grants different buffs to the active character standing inside its AoE based on how many Geo characters are in the party:
- 1 Geo character (Standing Firm): DEF Bonus.
- 2 Geo characters (Impregnable): DEF Bonus + resistance to interruption.
- 3 Geo characters (Crunch): DEF Bonus + interruption resistance + Geo DMG Bonus.
Gorou counts as one of the Geo characters needed for these buffs. So you need just two more Geo teammates to unlock the full triple buff. Only one War Banner from Gorou can exist at a time, and characters can only benefit from one banner total.
Elemental Burst – Juuga: Forward Unto Victory
Gorou deals AoE Geo DMG and creates a General’s Glory field around the active character. Unlike the War Banner from his Skill (which is static), General’s Glory follows the active character, keeping the buffs active no matter where they move.
General’s Glory applies the same three-tier buffs as his Skill (based on Geo party members), and additionally fires Crystal Collapse attacks that deal Geo DMG to nearby enemies. The field lasts 9 seconds.
If a War Banner already exists when he uses his Burst, the Burst field replaces it. After the Burst ends, the War Banner is re-created at the active character’s position.
Passive Talents
- A Favor Repaid (1st Ascension Passive): Gorou’s Skill and Burst damage scales with his DEF stat. Inuzaka All-Round Defense deals bonus DMG equal to 156% of Gorou’s DEF, and Juuga: Forward Unto Victory as well as Crystal Collapse deal bonus DMG equal to 15.6% of his DEF. This gives a small reason to invest in DEF% for Gorou even in a support role.
- Heedless of the Wind and Weather (4th Ascension Passive): After using Juuga: Forward Unto Victory, all nearby party members gain a 25% DEF bonus for 12 seconds. This is separate from and stacks on top of the War Banner’s own DEF bonus, giving Geo teams significant defense stacking.
- Seeker of Shinies (Utility Passive): Displays the location of nearby resources unique to Inazuma on the mini-map. Very useful for collecting local specialties without missing any.
Gorou Constellations
Gorou’s Constellations progressively make him a more powerful and self-sufficient support. C4 is a particularly major turning point for Geo teams.
- C1 – Rushing Hound: Swift as the Wind: When characters inside Gorou’s War Banner or General’s Glory deal Geo DMG to enemies, the cooldown of Inuzaka All-Round Defense is reduced by 2 seconds. This effect can trigger once every 10 seconds. More frequent Skill use means more banner uptime and more particle generation.
- C2 – Sitting Hound: Steady as a Clock: When the active character inside General’s Glory obtains an Elemental Shard from a Crystallize reaction, Gorou’s General’s Glory duration is extended by 1 second, up to a maximum of 3 extra seconds. This gives more Burst uptime in teams that regularly trigger Crystallize.
- C3 – Mauling Hound: Fierce as Fire: Increases the level of Inuzaka All-Round Defense by 3, up to a maximum of Level 15. Boosts his Skill damage and the DEF scaling from his passive.
- C4 – Lapping Hound: Warm as Water: When General’s Glory is active, it will heal the active character inside it for 50% of Gorou’s own DEF every 1.5 seconds. This is one of the most impactful Constellations — it gives Mono Geo teams built-in sustain without needing a dedicated healer.
- C5 – Impeccable Horns: Starward Stride: Increases the level of Juuga: Forward Unto Victory by 3, up to a maximum of Level 15. Boosts Burst damage and Crystal Collapse hits.
- C6 – Valiant Hound: Mountainous Fealty: When the War Banner or General’s Glory is providing all three buffs (Standing Firm, Impregnable, and Crunch — i.e. 3 Geo characters), the CRIT DMG of Geo DMG dealt by all party members increases by 40%. This is a massive team-wide CRIT DMG upgrade for Mono Geo teams.
Priority: C4 is the single most important Constellation for team functionality. C6 dramatically increases team damage. Even C0 and C2 Gorou are functional — but C4 removes the healer requirement and C6 pushes Geo team damage to its ceiling.
Gorou Best Weapons
Gorou’s only real stat need from a weapon is Energy Recharge. His Burst costs 80 Energy and has a relatively long cooldown, making ER his top priority. Most of his best weapons solve this problem.
Best Weapon – Favonius Warbow (Free)
This is Gorou’s best overall weapon and it is completely free. You receive it by completing the first Archon Quest chapter. The Favonius Warbow has Energy Recharge as its substat, directly solving Gorou’s biggest need. Its passive generates 6 Energy particles on a CRIT hit — with a cooldown — which helps charge the team’s Bursts as well. Since Gorou just needs to hit enemies with his Skill and Burst and then swap out, the CRIT Rate requirement to proc the passive is easy to meet with artifact substats.
Best Premium Weapon – Elegy for the End
Elegy for the End is a 5-star bow with an Energy Recharge substat and a powerful passive. When Gorou collects Sigils of Remembrance (from hitting enemies with Skill or Burst), the team eventually gains a buff that increases Elemental Mastery and ATK% for all members. While EM does not directly help Gorou’s Geo-focused teammates, the ATK% buff contributes to overall team damage. A strong option if you have it.
Other Good Options
- Sacrificial Bow: Resets Gorou’s Elemental Skill cooldown on a CRIT hit. Gives him an extra War Banner placement per rotation and generates more Geo particles to charge the team’s Bursts. A strong F2P-accessible 4-star choice.
- End of the Line: A craftable 4-star bow with Energy Recharge as a substat. A solid alternative if you need more ER and do not have other options.
- Recurve Bow: A 3-star weapon that restores HP on kill. Extremely early-game only — replace it as soon as you have better options.
- The Stringless: Boosts Elemental Skill and Burst damage. A minor personal DPS increase for Gorou but does not solve his Energy needs.
Gorou Best Artifacts
Gorou is one of the cheapest characters to build in the game. He does not need high-quality artifact rolls. The goal is to give him enough Energy Recharge to use his Burst consistently and enough DEF to slightly boost his passive damage scaling.
Best Overall – Noblesse Oblige (4-Piece)
If no other teammate is already using Noblesse Oblige, Gorou is a great holder for it. The 4-piece bonus gives all party members +20% ATK for 12 seconds after using an Elemental Burst. This stacks with his own War Banner buffs to make the whole team stronger. Since Gorou uses his Burst in every rotation, the Noblesse buff has near-perfect uptime.
Alternative – 2-Piece Husk of Opulent Dreams + 2-Piece Emblem of Severed Fate
The 2-piece Husk gives 30% DEF, which slightly increases Gorou’s personal damage from his DEF-scaling passive. The 2-piece Emblem gives 20% Energy Recharge to keep his Burst charged. This combination balances his two main needs and is a flexible option if you have strong pieces from both sets.
Budget Option – The Exile (4-Piece)
The Exile is a 4-star set obtainable from domains early in the game. Using an Elemental Burst restores 2 Energy every 2 seconds for 6 seconds for all party members. This helps the whole team charge their own Bursts faster. It is an especially good choice in a Mono Geo team where Itto and Albedo both have high Energy costs.

- Sands: Energy Recharge (priority) or DEF%
- Goblet: DEF% or Geo DMG Bonus
- Circlet: DEF% or CRIT Rate (if using Favonius Warbow)

Here is everything you need to ascend Gorou from Level 1 to Level 90:
- Geo Gems: Prithiva Topaz (Sliver, Fragment, Chunk, Gemstone) — farmed from Geo bosses like the Geo Hypostasis or Golden Wolflord.
- Boss Material: Perpetual Heart — dropped by the Perpetual Mechanical Array boss in Inazuma.
- Local Specialty: Sango Pearl — found along the coastlines and in the waters of Watatsumi Island, Inazuma.
- Common Enemy Drop: Spectral Husk, Spectral Heart, and Spectral Nucleus — dropped by Specter enemies found in Inazuma and Sumeru.
Talent Materials
To level up Gorou’s talents, you need:
- Talent Books: Light series (Teachings, Guide, Philosophies of Light) — from the Violet Court domain on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday.
- Weekly Boss Material: Molten Moment — dropped by La Signora (Crimson Witch of Embers) weekly boss.
- Common Material: Spectral series — from Specter enemies.
- Crown of Insight: One per talent to reach Level 10.
Gorou Best Team Compositions
Gorou belongs in one type of team — Mono Geo. His buffs only work for Geo characters, so building a team around him means committing to a Geo-focused composition.
Best Team – Itto Mono Geo
This is Gorou’s flagship team and one of the strongest Mono Geo compositions in the game. Itto is a DEF-scaling Geo DPS who gets the absolute most out of Gorou’s DEF and Geo DMG buffs. Gorou uses his Skill and Burst to set up the buff field, and Itto sweeps through enemies during his own Burst window. Albedo contributes off-field Geo damage, and the fourth slot can flex between another Geo character or a utility pick.

- Support: Gorou
- Flex: Zhongli or another Geo character
Noelle Mono Geo
Noelle is a DEF-scaling Claymore user who converts DEF into healing and deals Geo DMG. Gorou’s DEF buffs directly increase both her damage and her healing. This is a strong F2P-friendly team that can clear most content without 5-star characters.
Navia Geo Team
Navia is a 5-star Geo DPS who benefits strongly from frequent Crystallize shards. Gorou provides Geo DMG bonus and DEF buffs while his General’s Glory generates Crystal Collapses that contribute to Navia’s shard stacking. The interruption resistance also helps Navia stay on field comfortably.
F2P Mono Geo
A fully free-to-play Mono Geo team that performs surprisingly well. Every character here is obtainable without limited banner pulls.
Gorou Talent Priority
Level Gorou’s talents in this order:
- Elemental Skill (Inuzaka All-Round Defense) — This is his primary ability. The banner is what makes Gorou valuable, and leveling it increases his personal DEF scaling damage and makes his buff uptime more reliable. Level this first.
- Elemental Burst (Juuga: Forward Unto Victory) — The mobile version of his War Banner that follows the active character. Leveling it increases Crystal Collapse damage and DEF scaling. Level second.
- Normal Attack (Ripping Fang Fletching) — Do not level this unless you specifically want to play Gorou as a Charged Attack sniper. In a support role, his Normal Attacks are irrelevant.
Gorou vs Other Supports – Why Use Him?
Gorou’s biggest strength is also his biggest limitation — he only works in Geo teams. But within that niche, no other character replaces him. He is the only source of a DEF buff in the game, and DEF is the scaling stat for several of the strongest Geo characters. Without Gorou, Itto and Noelle lose a massive portion of their damage.
At C0, he does his job well enough for most content. At C4, the healing from General’s Glory removes the need for a healer, freeing up a team slot for another damage dealer. At C6, a 40% Geo CRIT DMG bonus for the entire party is a top-tier team buff that makes Mono Geo teams genuinely competitive in Spiral Abyss.
If you are running a Geo DPS team, Gorou is the best support you can have. There is no substitute for what he does.
