In Liyue, Zhongli presents himself as a knowledgeable consultant working for the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor, a business that handles the rites and ceremonies of the deceased. He is elegant, unhurried, and speaks with the quiet certainty of someone who has seen thousands of years of history. He is fond of expensive things and often forgets to bring Mora — a detail that has become one of Genshin Impact’s most beloved character quirks.

His true identity — Morax, Rex Lapis — is revealed during the Liyue Archon Quest. He has chosen to shed his divine status and live among humans, entrusting Liyue’s future to its people rather than continuing to govern them from above. This is not weakness. It is the conclusion of thousands of years of watching civilisation grow, and the quiet confidence that Liyue no longer needs him in the same way it once did.

In gameplay, Zhongli has been a cornerstone of Genshin Impact’s support roster since his Version 1.3 buff transformed him from a contested character into one of the most universally recommended pulls in the game. He has not been outclassed since.

Zhongli Role and Playstyle

Zhongli is the premier Shield Support in Genshin Impact. His role is simple to describe and even simpler to execute: use his Hold Elemental Skill, get a powerful shield, swap to your main DPS, and let the shield do the rest.

What makes Zhongli exceptional is not just the shield’s raw strength — it is the universal 20% RES shred that comes with it. Every character standing inside the shield’s radius passively shreds enemy Elemental and Physical Resistance by 20%. This means every character in the party deals more damage simply because Zhongli is in the team. No other shielder in the game provides this level of utility alongside protection.

His second role is occasional Burst Support. Planet Befall deals massive AoE Geo DMG scaled off 33% of his Max HP and petrifies all enemies in its area — freezing them in place for a few seconds. This is not always used in every rotation since the Burst has a long animation, but at high HP values it deals meaningful damage and the Petrification is a genuinely useful crowd control effect.

If you are building a team with characters who need full uptime for their rotations — like Hu Tao, Xiao, or Arlecchino — Zhongli allows them to focus entirely on dealing damage without ever needing to dodge. Zhongli Skills Explained

Normal Attack – Rain of Stone

Performs up to 6 consecutive spear strikes. His Charged Attack lunges forward, sending stone spears along his path. His Plunging Attack deals AoE DMG on impact. Zhongli’s Normal Attacks are not used in standard support builds. They become relevant only in niche Physical DPS builds at very high investment. In every other setup, ignore Normal Attacks entirely.

Elemental Skill – Dominus Lapidis

This Skill has two modes — Tap and Hold — that do completely different things.

• Tap: Summons a Stone Stele at Zhongli’s location. The Stele deals periodic AoE Geo DMG to nearby enemies and resonates with other nearby Geo Constructs, dealing additional Geo DMG in a larger radius. It is also a genuine Geo Construct that can be climbed, used to block projectiles, and triggers construct-dependent character effects (like Chiori’s second Tamoto). Only one Stele can exist at a time by default (two at C1).
• Hold: Zhongli creates the Jade Shield — the core of his kit. The shield absorbs damage based on his Max HP and has a 150% Geo absorption bonus (it absorbs 150% more damage from Geo attacks). While any character has the Jade Shield, all nearby enemies have their Elemental RES and Physical RES reduced by 20%. The shield lasts 20 seconds. The Hold Skill also creates a Stone Stele and resonates all nearby Geo Constructs simultaneously on cast.

The important detail: always use the Hold version in combat. The Tap Skill is mainly used for exploration (climbing the Stele to reach high areas) or in specific Geo Construct team setups.

Elemental Burst – Planet Befall

Zhongli summons a massive meteor that crashes into the field, dealing AoE Geo DMG to all enemies in a wide area. All enemies hit are affected by Petrification — they cannot move for a few seconds. The Burst costs 40 Energy and deals additional damage equal to 33% of Zhongli’s Max HP on top of its base multiplier. At 50,000 HP, this adds tens of thousands of bonus damage to each Burst cast. The Petrification lasts 3.6 seconds (extended to 5.6 seconds at C4).

Zhongli Passives Explained

A1 Passive – Resonant Waves

When the Jade Shield takes damage, it fortifies — gaining a Fortification stack. Each stack increases its damage absorption by 5%. Up to 5 stacks can be held at once for a maximum 25% additional absorption. Stacks are lost if the shield breaks or Zhongli leaves the field. In practice this passive makes an already strong shield even sturdier the more it gets hit. Against heavy-hitting enemies, the shield becomes increasingly difficult to break.

A4 Passive – Dominance of Earth

This passive is the reason Zhongli’s HP scaling matters so much. It adds HP-based bonus damage to multiple parts of his kit:

• Normal Attack, Charged Attack, and Plunging Attack DMG increases by 1.39% of Max HP.
• Stone Stele resonance, and Hold Skill DMG increases by 1.9% of Max HP.
• Planet Befall DMG increases by 33% of Max HP.

At 60,000 HP, the Burst gains nearly 20,000 flat damage from this passive alone — before multipliers. This is what allows a support-built Zhongli to still deal serious Burst damage without any investment in ATK or CRIT.

Utility Passive – Arcanum of Crystal

Refunds 15% of the ores used when crafting Polearm weapons. A useful passive for any account that regularly levels multiple Polearm users. Saves meaningful ore over time.

Best Weapons for Zhongli

Zhongli’s weapon priority depends entirely on his build. For pure shield support, HP% is king. For Burst damage support, HP weapons still lead because of his A4 passive. ATK or CRIT weapons only make sense in niche Physical DPS builds.

5-Star Weapons (Support Build)

• Staff of Homa (Best for Damage): HP% secondary stat and a passive that converts a percentage of Max HP into ATK. At high HP values the ATK bonus is very large, which feeds into Zhongli’s Burst damage through both base multipliers and A4 scaling. The passive also grants a larger HP bonus when Zhongli’s HP is below 50% — rarely triggered but useful if it activates. Best 5-star weapon for Zhongli who uses his Burst regularly.
• Vortex Vanquisher: ATK% secondary and a passive that boosts Shield Strength and ATK when hitting enemies. Stacks apply even while off-field through the Stele. Decent but outperformed by Staff of Homa for most content.
• Primordial Jade Winged-Spear: CRIT Rate secondary and an ATK stacking passive. Works on Zhongli but his kit gains less from CRIT stats than HP stats. A usable option if you have it but not optimised for him.

4-Star and 3-Star Weapons (Support Build)

• Black Tassel (Best F2P / Pure Shield): A 3-star weapon available from wish or shops. Its HP% secondary stat is the highest HP% secondary on any Polearm in the game. The passive increases Slime DMG (completely irrelevant for Zhongli). This weapon is used purely for the HP% secondary — nothing else. At max refinement it provides 46.9% HP, which translates directly into a stronger shield. If your only goal is the biggest possible Jade Shield, Black Tassel is the answer regardless of rarity.
• Favonius Lance: Energy Recharge secondary and a particle generation passive. Use this if you want Zhongli to use his Burst more reliably every rotation. Requires some CRIT Rate to trigger the passive. A good choice for Burst Support Zhongli who wants to Petrify enemies frequently.
• Deathmatch (Battle Pass): CRIT Rate secondary and ATK buffs based on number of nearby opponents. Useful in Burst DPS Zhongli builds where you want CRIT on top of HP scaling. Only available through the Battle Pass.
• Lithic Spear: ATK% secondary and stacks that provide ATK% and CRIT Rate per Liyue character in the party. Synergises thematically (Zhongli is from Liyue) and works in teams with multiple Liyue characters.
• Wavebreaker’s Fin: ATK% secondary and a Burst DMG bonus based on the party’s combined Energy cost. Useful in high-cost Burst teams like Raiden National.

Best Artifacts for Zhongli

Zhongli’s artifact choice depends on which role he fills. In most teams, 4-piece Tenacity of the Millelith is the standard choice because it boosts his shield strength and provides the whole team with an ATK buff simultaneously.

Build 1: Pure Shield Support – 4-Piece Tenacity of the Millelith (Best)

The 2-piece bonus gives 20% HP — directly strengthening the Jade Shield. The 4-piece passive triggers when a character with the set hits an enemy with their Elemental Skill: all nearby party members gain 20% ATK and 30% Shield Strength for 3 seconds. Zhongli’s Stone Stele, which resonates even while he is off-field, consistently triggers this passive — meaning the ATK buff applies to your main DPS the entire time they are on the field. This turns Zhongli from a pure defensive pick into a support who simultaneously buffs the whole team’s ATK. It is his most universally useful artifact set.

Build 2: Reaction Team Support – Scroll of the Hero of Cinder City

A newer artifact set introduced in 2025. After the wearer triggers a Nightsoul Burst or an elemental reaction related to their element, all nearby party members gain a 12% Elemental DMG Bonus for the elements involved. Since Zhongli is Geo, this works particularly well in teams with Crystallize reactions. A strong support alternative in Natlan-adjacent team compositions and modern reaction-heavy setups where Tenacity’s ATK buff has diminishing returns.

Build 3: Burst Support – 4-Piece Archaic Petra

The 4-piece passive gives a 35% Elemental DMG Bonus to the party for the element of a Crystallize shard picked up by the wearer. Zhongli picks up a shard, then your DPS gets a 35% damage bonus of their element for 10 seconds. Best used in teams where Crystallize reliably generates shards of the right element and someone can pick them up consistently. Requires more active management than Tenacity.

Build 4: HP Focus – 2-Piece Tenacity + 2-Piece Emblem or Vourukasha

Simple HP stacking via mixing 2-piece sets. Useful early in farming progression when a full 4-piece Tenacity set with good substats is not yet available. Two pieces of any HP%-providing set can substitute until a proper 4-piece is farmed.

Zhongli fits into almost any team in the game. His 20% universal RES shred has no element-specific condition — it benefits Pyro, Hydro, Electro, Anemo, Cryo, Dendro, and Physical damage equally. This makes him the most team-agnostic support in Genshin Impact.

Zhongli + Hu Tao (Classic Premium Team)

Xiao’s Burst involves constant Plunge Attacks that can be interrupted by enemy hits. Zhongli completely solves this problem. The Geo Resonance between Zhongli and Albedo grants 15% DMG Bonus and 15% Shield Strength while shielded — applying to all of Xiao’s damage. Albedo provides off-field Geo Sub-DPS while his Solar Isotoma also serves as a Geo Construct. A smooth, comfortable team for Xiao players who want to focus entirely on maximising Plunge Attack damage.

Zhongli + Arlecchino

Arlecchino cannot be healed by most sources while her Bond of Life is active — she depends on her own Blood-Debt Directives to manage sustain. Zhongli’s shield sidesteps the healing restriction entirely by preventing damage from reaching her HP. This makes Zhongli one of Arlecchino’s most synergistic support picks, allowing her to focus on damage while the shield handles survivability.

Zhongli + Neuvillette

Neuvillette channels his Charged Attack for extended periods — exactly the kind of action that gets interrupted without a shield. Zhongli keeps Neuvillette safe and his RES shred applies to the Hydro enemies and reactions Neuvillette triggers. A comfortable combination that lets Neuvillette fully channel every Charged Attack without threat of knockback.

Mono Geo Team

• Zhongli — Shield + Geo Construct (triggers Chiori‘s second Tamoto)

In Mono Geo teams, Zhongli’s Stone Stele enables Geo Resonance and provides a Geo Construct for Chiori’s second Tamoto. His Tenacity 4-piece passive buffs Itto’s ATK through the Stele’s off-field resonance ticks. A clean, self-sufficient composition that requires no reaction management.

Zhongli Constellations Guide

Zhongli at C0 is already one of the most impactful supports in the game. His constellations are genuine quality-of-life improvements — none of them are required. The best optional upgrades are C1 and C2.

C1 – Rock, the Backbone of Earth

Effect: Increases the maximum number of Stone Steles created by Dominus Lapidis that may exist simultaneously to 2.

At base, only one Stone Stele can exist at a time — placing a new one removes the old one. C1 lets two Steles coexist simultaneously. This means more frequent Stele resonance hits and more consistent triggering of Tenacity of the Millelith’s 4-piece ATK buff. It also means Zhongli can now cover a larger area with Geo resonance pulses. A modest but consistent quality-of-life upgrade.

C2 – Stone, the Cradle of Jade

Effect: Planet Befall grants nearby characters on the field a Jade Shield when it descends.

This is arguably the best constellation on Zhongli for comfort play. Normally, Zhongli’s shield must be generated with his Hold Elemental Skill. If Zhongli uses his Burst and a teammate is on the field while it lands, they now also receive a Jade Shield. This means your active character is protected during the Burst’s animation window — previously a brief gap where you had no shield. C2 removes that gap entirely and makes the Burst a dual-function move that both damages and shields. A significant quality-of-life upgrade for Burst Support Zhongli builds.

C3 – Jade, Shimmering through Darkness

Effect: Increases the Level of Dominus Lapidis (Elemental Skill) by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.

A talent level boost for his Elemental Skill. Higher Skill talent level increases the shield absorption value and the damage of the Stone Stele and Hold Skill hit. Since the shield scales off HP rather than Skill multipliers for most of its value, this upgrade is modest — but it does increase the initial Hold Skill Geo damage and Stele resonance damage.

C4 – Topaz, Unbreakable and Fearless

Effect: Increases Planet Befall’s AoE by 20% and increases the duration of Petrification by 2 seconds.

Extends Petrification from 3.6 seconds to 5.6 seconds and widens the Burst’s impact zone. More useful in content with large enemy groups where the wider AoE catches more targets. The extended Petrification window gives your team more time to deal damage freely while enemies cannot move or act. A niche but useful upgrade in the right content.

C5 – Lazuli, Herald of the Order

Effect: Increases the Level of Planet Befall (Elemental Burst) by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.

A talent level boost for his Burst. Higher Burst talent level increases the base damage of Planet Befall and the HP scaling multipliers become more efficient at higher levels. A worthwhile upgrade for Burst-focused builds.

C6 – Chrysos, Bounty of Dominator

Effect: When the Jade Shield takes DMG, 40% of that incoming DMG is converted to HP for the current character. A single instance of regeneration cannot exceed 8% of that character’s Max HP.

This constellation adds a healing effect to Zhongli’s shield — when the shield absorbs damage, 40% of what it absorbs is given back as HP to the current character. It is capped at 8% of the character’s Max HP per proc, but it means the shield simultaneously protects and heals. In content where the shield takes sustained damage, this provides a meaningful stream of HP recovery. A strong C6 for comfort-focused builds but far from necessary.

Zhongli Ascension Materials

Here is everything needed to fully ascend Zhongli from Level 1 to Level 90. He gains Geo DMG Bonus as his ascension stat, totalling 28.8% extra Geo DMG at Level 90 — which boosts both his Burst damage and his Stone Stele hits. Notably, all of Zhongli’s materials are found exclusively in Liyue, befitting the Geo Archon of the nation of contracts.

The best farming location is Mount Hulao, which has a dense cluster of Cor Lapis nodes. Changshun, an NPC near Linlang’s Antique Shop in Liyue Harbor, also sells 5 Cor Lapis for 1,500 Mora each (restocks every 3 days). Cor Lapis cannot be grown in the Serenitea Pot.

Zhongli Talent Priority

• Elemental Skill (Dominus Lapidis) — Level first. Higher Skill talent level increases the Jade Shield’s base absorption value (alongside HP scaling), the Stone Stele’s damage, and the Hold Skill’s initial hit. Since the shield is the entire reason Zhongli is in most teams, keeping this talent leveled is essential. Priority even in pure support builds.
• Elemental Burst (Planet Befall) — Level second. Only worth investing in if you use the Burst regularly. The Burst damage scales off both talent multipliers and the A4 HP passive — higher talent level means stronger Petrification damage. In Burst DPS builds, this is co-equal with the Skill.
• Normal Attack — Do not level. Zhongli almost never uses Normal Attacks in any recommended build. Skip this talent entirely. The talent materials are better saved for his Skill and Burst.

How to Play Zhongli – Rotation Guide

Zhongli’s rotation is the simplest of any support in the game. The only mistake to avoid is using the Tap Skill accidentally instead of the Hold Skill in combat.

Standard Shield Support Rotation

1. Switch to Zhongli at the start of a rotation.
2. Hold his Elemental Skill until the Hold animation triggers — Zhongli summons a Stone Stele and creates the Jade Shield around himself and all nearby characters.
3. Optionally use his Elemental Burst (Planet Befall) if it is available and you want the Petrification CC or additional damage.
4. Immediately swap to your main DPS character.
5. Play your DPS through their entire rotation — the shield will be active the whole time thanks to its 20-second duration.
6. When the DPS rotation ends and the shield nears expiry, switch back to Zhongli and use the Hold Skill again to refresh the shield.

Key tip: The Jade Shield has a 24-second cooldown but lasts 20 seconds. This means there is a 4-second gap between shield expiry and when you can refresh it. Plan your rotation so Zhongli uses the Hold Skill at the very start of each rotation — not mid-rotation — to minimise the time your team spends unshielded. At C2, using the Burst when the shield is about to expire also provides a fresh shield to the active character.

Tenacity ATK Buff tip: Zhongli’s Stone Stele (created by the Hold Skill) resonates off-field and triggers the Tenacity of the Millelith 4-piece passive every few seconds. You do not need to do anything to maintain this buff — once the Stele is placed and the shield is up, the ATK buff to your whole team runs automatically in the background. Just make sure your carry is in range of the Stele’s resonance pulses.

His shield is not just the strongest in the game — it also shreds enemy RES for the whole party. No other character provides both of these effects simultaneously. The closest alternatives (Layla, Kirara, Baizhu) all carve element-specific niches rather than replacing what Zhongli offers.

If you are a newer player, Zhongli is the single best investment you can make. Once you have him, survivability stops being a problem for most teams entirely. If you are a veteran player who missed him, prioritise his next rerun.
