TL;DR
- Hu Tao is a 5-star Pyro Polearm main DPS and the highest single-shot Pyro DPS in Genshin Impact.
- Her damage is HP-scaled — she converts HP into ATK via her Elemental Skill and hits hardest below 50% HP.
- Staff of Homa is her signature and best weapon; Dragon’s Bane at R5 is the best 4-star alternative.
- Crimson Witch of Flames (4-piece) is her default best artifact set; Marechaussee Hunter is best in Furina + Xianyun teams.
- She excels in Vaporize teams with Xingqiu, Yelan, or both — never use Bennett as his healing pushes her above 50% HP.
- Talent priority: Normal Attack = Elemental Skill > Burst.
- Her Ascension Stat is CRIT DMG, reaching 38.4% at max Ascension.
- C1 is her most impactful constellation — it removes the stamina cost from her Charged Attacks inside the Skill stance.
Who Is Hu Tao in Genshin Impact?
Hu Tao is a 5-star Pyro character in Genshin Impact. She wields a Polearm and comes from Liyue, where she serves as the 77th Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor — one of the most prestigious funeral services in all of Teyvat. She took over the directorship at a remarkably young age and has since become a beloved if eccentric fixture of Liyue life. She also writes and recites poetry, though its quality is… debated.
In combat, Hu Tao is the highest-ceiling single-target Pyro main DPS in the game. Her unique identity revolves around HP scaling — her Elemental Skill converts a portion of her HP into bonus ATK, and her passive grants a significant bonus when her HP drops below 50%. The result is a character who intentionally plays on the edge of death for maximum damage, combining this fragile-but-deadly playstyle with Vaporize reactions through off-field Hydro support. She remains a top-tier carry years after her release and no released character has matched her peak single-target Pyro output.
For characters who support Hu Tao’s powerful Vaporize-focused playstyle, check out the Xingqiu character guide and the Yelan character page — her two most important Hydro teammates.
Hu Tao’s Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- Highest peak single-target Pyro DPS in the game — No character released to date has matched Hu Tao’s ceiling on a single target. Her HP-scaling Charged Attacks combined with Vaporize reactions and sub-50% HP bonuses deliver enormous burst damage windows.
- Scales from HP rather than ATK — This means HP% substats directly contribute to her damage, and she benefits more from HP-stacking items like Tenacity of the Millelith 2-piece and HP% on Sands compared to pure ATK% builds.
- Synergises extraordinarily with Furina — Furina’s HP drain creates the HP fluctuations Hu Tao needs to reach sub-50% HP quickly, while simultaneously building Fanfare stacks for a 75% damage multiplier. Furina’s release in Version 4.2 actually strengthened Hu Tao’s meta position.
- Provides interruption resistance via Xingqiu’s Rain Swords — When paired with Xingqiu, Hu Tao benefits from Rain Sword interruption resistance that allows uninterrupted Charged Attack chains during her Skill window.
- Strong self-healing from Burst — Her Elemental Burst heals her based on HP for each enemy hit, letting her recover from low-HP play without a dedicated healer in many situations.
- Remains consistently meta across years of updates — Five years after release, Hu Tao still clears Floor 12 comfortably and appears regularly in high-difficulty endgame content.
Weaknesses
- High-risk playstyle — Playing deliberately below 50% HP is dangerous. One mis-timed enemy hit can end a run. She requires practice and awareness to manage her HP without accidentally dying or being healed too much.
- Limited AoE outside of Xianyun teams — Her Charged Attacks are single-target focused. Without Xianyun enabling Plunging Attack builds, she struggles in multi-enemy chambers compared to wide-AoE carries.
- Cannot use Bennett — Bennett’s healing consistently pushes Hu Tao above 50% HP, removing her sub-HP bonus and reducing her damage. He is actively anti-synergistic with her kit in most scenarios.
- Heavily reliant on off-field Hydro — Without Xingqiu or Yelan providing consistent Hydro application, she loses the Vaporize reaction that constitutes the bulk of her damage ceiling.
- Stamina-intensive at C0 — Without C1, her Charged Attacks inside the Skill stance consume Stamina. Stamina management is a real concern at C0 during long Skill windows.
Hu Tao’s Abilities and Talents
Normal Attack – Secret Spear of Wangsheng
Hu Tao performs up to six consecutive Polearm thrusts. Her Charged Attack consumes Stamina for a Pyro-infused upward sweep during her Elemental Skill stance. Her Plunging Attack deals AoE damage on landing and becomes significant in Xianyun Plunge teams. The Normal Attack talent level governs all of Hu Tao’s attack multipliers including Charged Attacks during the Paramita Papilio state and is equally high priority with her Elemental Skill talent.
Elemental Skill – Guide to Afterlife
Hu Tao consumes a portion of her current HP (up to 30% of Max HP) to push nearby enemies back and enter the Paramita Papilio state. During this state:
- Her ATK is increased based on her Max HP at the time of activation (up to a cap of 400% of her Base ATK).
- All her attacks are infused with Pyro and cannot be overridden by other elemental infusions.
- Her Charged Attacks apply a Blood Blossom debuff on enemies hit, which periodically deals additional Pyro damage over 8 seconds.
- She gains resistance to interruption.
This state lasts 9 seconds with a 16-second cooldown. The HP consumed by this Skill is what initially drops Hu Tao toward the sub-50% threshold for her A4 passive bonus. The ATK bonus from this Skill snapshots at the moment it is cast based on her Max HP — meaning HP buffs that affect HP when the Skill activates directly increase her combat ATK. This talent is equally high priority to level alongside Normal Attack.
Elemental Burst – Spirit Soother
Hu Tao commands a blazing spirit to attack nearby enemies, dealing massive Pyro damage to up to five targets simultaneously. For each enemy hit (up to five), Hu Tao regenerates HP. When her HP is below 50%, both the damage dealt and the HP restored are significantly increased. The Burst has a 60 Energy cost and a 15-second cooldown. Its HP recovery makes it a key survival tool during low-HP play, and the bonus damage at sub-50% HP makes it a powerful nuke. The Burst talent is a third priority after Normal Attack and Elemental Skill.
Passive Talents
- Flutter By (A1) — When a Paramita Papilio state ends, all nearby party members (except Hu Tao herself) gain 12% CRIT Rate for 8 seconds. A useful team-wide buff that benefits any DPS characters during the off-field window after Hu Tao’s Skill ends.
- Sanguine Rouge (A4) — When Hu Tao’s HP is equal to or less than 50%, her Pyro DMG Bonus is increased by 33%. This passive is the cornerstone of her design — staying below 50% HP provides a permanent 33% Pyro DMG bonus on all her attacks during that window. Building teams and playstyles around maintaining this threshold safely is the primary challenge and reward of playing Hu Tao.
- The More the Merrier (Utility) — When Hu Tao cooks a dish perfectly, she has a 18% chance to receive double the output. A handy cooking passive for stocking up on food.
Best Weapons for Hu Tao
Hu Tao’s best weapons provide CRIT DMG, HP%, or strong passives that synergise with her HP scaling. CRIT DMG is her most valuable CRIT substat because her Ascension Stat already provides 38.4% CRIT DMG at max Ascension, and her A4 passive adds Pyro DMG — meaning CRIT DMG scales the resulting numbers most efficiently.
Best 5-Star Weapons
- Staff of Homa (Signature — Best in Slot) — Hu Tao’s signature weapon and her undisputed best-in-slot across all builds. It provides CRIT DMG as a substat and a passive called Reckless Cinnabar that increases HP by 20%, then adds ATK based on 0.8% of Max HP. When HP is below 50%, this ATK bonus doubles to 1.6% of Max HP. The passive directly synergises with her HP-dependent playstyle — the lower her HP, the harder Staff of Homa hits. Pull for this weapon if you are serious about Hu Tao. No other Polearm comes close for her specifically.
- Staff of the Scarlet Sands — Provides CRIT Rate and converts Elemental Mastery into bonus ATK via its passive. Works particularly well when Hu Tao is using Gilded Dreams artifacts or running high-EM builds. The EM conversion means she benefits doubly from EM as both a Vaporize amplifier and an ATK source. A strong alternative when Staff of Homa is unavailable.
- Primordial Jade Winged-Spear — High base ATK and CRIT Rate substat with a stacking ATK and DMG bonus from hit count. Works as a reliable damage option though it does not interact with Hu Tao’s HP-scaling identity as elegantly as Homa or Scarlet Sands.
Best 4-Star Weapons
- Dragon’s Bane (Best 4-Star — Craftable) — Provides Elemental Mastery as a substat and a passive that increases damage against Pyro-affected or Hydro-affected enemies by 20%. In Vaporize teams where enemies are always carrying a Hydro aura from Xingqiu or Yelan, this passive is permanently active. At Refinement 5, Dragon’s Bane is competitive with many 5-star options for Hu Tao and is widely considered her single best 4-star choice. Craft and refine this weapon as a priority if you lack her 5-star options.
- Deathmatch (Battle Pass) — CRIT Rate substat with a passive that boosts ATK% depending on the number of enemies. In single-target scenarios (1–2 enemies), it provides higher ATK than the multi-enemy variant. A solid option for players who have the Battle Pass and lack other options.
- Ballad of the Fjords (Battle Pass) — Provides CRIT Rate and grants Elemental Mastery when three or more elements are present in the party. In double Hydro teams, this EM bonus applies reliably, making it a strong and accessible 4-star pick for reaction-focused builds.
- White Tassel (3-Star) — CRIT Rate substat and a passive that boosts Normal Attack damage. While less impactful than 4-star alternatives, it is fully free and worth using as a placeholder while farming for better options.
Best Artifacts for Hu Tao
Hu Tao’s artifact set changes based on her team composition. Crimson Witch of Flames is her consistent default choice, but two additional sets perform better in specific team contexts.
Crimson Witch of Flames (4-Piece) — Default Best in Slot
The 2-piece bonus provides 15% Pyro DMG Bonus. The 4-piece bonus increases Overloaded and Burning damage by 40%, and Vaporize and Melt damage by 15%. Additionally, using an Elemental Skill increases the 2-piece effect by 50% for 10 seconds, stacking up to three times. Because Hu Tao uses her Elemental Skill to enter Paramita Papilio at the start of every rotation, she immediately triggers this stack mechanic. The consistent 15% Vaporize bonus and Pyro DMG amplification make this her most reliable and effective set across the widest range of teams.
Marechaussee Hunter (4-Piece) — Best in Slot for Furina + Xianyun Teams
The 4-piece bonus increases Normal, Charged, and Plunging Attack DMG by 15% per stack (up to 36% total) whenever the active character’s HP changes — either increasing or decreasing. In Furina teams where HP is constantly draining and fluctuating through Furina’s summons and Xianyun’s healing, Hu Tao gains and refreshes these stacks repeatedly throughout her entire rotation. The 36% bonus to her Charged and Plunging Attacks consistently outperforms Crimson Witch of Flames in these specific team setups. Only switch to this set if you are running Furina and a dedicated healer like Xianyun or Jean.
Shimenawa’s Reminiscence (4-Piece) — Charged Attack Alternative
The 4-piece bonus consumes 15 Energy after using an Elemental Skill to grant a 50% Normal, Charged, and Plunging Attack DMG bonus for 10 seconds. This converts Hu Tao’s Skill activation into a large attack damage multiplier. The trade-off is reduced Energy, which makes her Burst less reliable as a healing and damage tool. In teams with healers where Hu Tao does not need her Burst for survival, and where someone else handles healing, this set can match or slightly exceed Crimson Witch of Flames. Not recommended for players who rely on the Burst for HP recovery.
Recommended Artifact Main Stats
- Sands: HP% (primary recommendation — her HP directly converts to ATK via her Skill) or EM (for Crimson Witch teams emphasising Vaporize multipliers)
- Goblet: Pyro DMG Bonus
- Circlet: CRIT DMG (preferred — her Ascension already covers CRIT DMG) or CRIT Rate
Recommended Substats
CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG are the highest priority substats at roughly a 1:2 ratio. HP% is the next priority since it directly amplifies both her Skill ATK conversion and her passive. Elemental Mastery comes after to amplify Vaporize multipliers. Energy Recharge is a lower priority — aim for around 120–130% ER since her Burst costs only 60 Energy and she generates her own particles through Charged Attacks and hits during Paramita Papilio. Avoid ATK% on Sands unless her HP is already very high from team buffs.
Hu Tao Constellations Guide
Hu Tao is a limited banner 5-star character. Her C1 is considered one of the best first constellations for any character in the game, fundamentally changing how comfortable she is to play. C2 further improves her survivability and damage. Beyond C2, later constellations are smaller incremental improvements.
- C1 – Crimson Bouquet (Most Important Constellation): While in the Paramita Papilio state, Hu Tao’s Charged Attacks do not consume Stamina. This single change is transformative for her gameplay. At C0, Hu Tao must carefully manage Stamina during her 9-second Skill window to avoid running out mid-rotation, which breaks her attack chain and loses significant DPS. At C1, she can freely chain Charged Attacks throughout the entire window without any Stamina concern. The result is a smoother, more consistent, and higher-damage rotation. C1 is the constellation most commonly cited as worth pulling for specifically.
- C2 – Ominous Rainfall: Increases the Blood Blossom DMG by an amount equal to 10% of Hu Tao’s Max HP when the effect is triggered. Additionally, Spirit Soother (Burst) will also apply Blood Blossom to opponents affected. The additional HP-scaling Blood Blossom damage and the Burst interaction add meaningful extra damage per rotation. A solid follow-up to C1 that further pushes her HP-scaling identity.
- C3 – Lingering Carmine: Increases the level of Guide to Afterlife (Elemental Skill) by 3, up to a maximum of level 15. A direct damage improvement to her Skill, though the Skill’s primary function is the ATK conversion and Pyro infusion rather than raw damage numbers.
- C4 – Garden of Eternal Rest: Upon defeating an enemy affected by a Blood Blossom Hu Tao applied herself, all nearby allies (except Hu Tao) gain 15% CRIT Rate for 15 seconds. Extends and improves her A1 team CRIT Rate buff from kills. Situationally useful in waves of weaker enemies but provides less value in boss fights.
- C5 – Floral Incense: Increases the level of Spirit Soother (Burst) by 3, up to a maximum of level 15. Boosts her Burst damage and healing output.
- C6 – Butterfly’s Embrace: Triggers when Hu Tao’s HP drops to or below 25%: all her resistances are increased by 200%, her CRIT Rate is increased by 100%, and her resistances against being knocked back are increased. The effect expires 60 seconds after being triggered. This extreme defensive constellation removes the risk of dying while at very low HP, effectively granting near-invulnerability at the most dangerous threshold. It fundamentally changes the risk calculus of low-HP play, and the 100% CRIT Rate means she never misses a critical hit while this is active. A transformative late-game constellation, though it requires reaching 25% HP to proc.
Hu Tao’s Best Team Compositions
Hu Tao’s best teams all share one core principle: consistent off-field Hydro application for Vaporize reactions while keeping her HP below 50% without accidentally healing her above that threshold.
Premium Furina + Xianyun Vaporize Team (Current Best)
This is Hu Tao’s highest-damage team in the current meta. Furina’s Fanfare mechanic generates a team-wide DMG bonus of up to 75% based on HP changes. Hu Tao’s Skill drains her HP, Furina’s summons drain party HP further, and Xianyun provides burst healing that creates large HP swings — rapidly stacking Fanfare to maximum. Xianyun also enables Plunging Attacks with boosted multipliers and serves as the team’s healer, solving Hu Tao’s survivability concern without pushing her above 50% HP at the wrong moment.
- Hu Tao + Furina + Xianyun + Yelan — The SS-tier composition. Yelan provides off-field Hydro for consistent Vaporize and adds her own sub-DPS with a passive team DMG% buff. Furina stacks Fanfare to 75% DMG bonus. Xianyun enables Plunge Attack Hu Tao and heals. Hu Tao deals Pyro Vaporize damage amplified by all three buffs simultaneously. One of the highest individual DPS ceilings for any team in the game on single targets.
- Hu Tao + Furina + Jean + Yelan — Jean replaces Xianyun when she is unavailable. Jean heals and holds Viridescent Venerer for RES shred on Pyro and Hydro. At C2, Jean’s 15% Normal Attack speed buff applies to Hu Tao. A slightly lower ceiling than the Xianyun version but still an exceptional team.
Double Hydro Vaporize Team (Highest Accessible Ceiling)
Running both Xingqiu and Yelan simultaneously provides so much Hydro application that virtually every one of Hu Tao’s attacks — not just Charged Attacks — Vaporizes. The constant Hydro aura ensures the maximum number of reaction procs per rotation, pushing her single-target damage to extreme levels. Hydro Resonance also grants +25% Max HP to all party members, indirectly buffing Hu Tao’s ATK conversion from her Skill.
- Hu Tao + Xingqiu + Yelan + Zhongli — The classic double Hydro team. Xingqiu applies Hydro on every Normal Attack and provides interruption resistance and damage reduction through Rain Swords. Yelan adds off-field Hydro sub-DPS and her passive DMG% buff that scales over the rotation. Zhongli provides a shield to protect Hu Tao at low HP and universally shreds all elemental and physical resistance. One of the most time-tested and consistent high-performance teams for Hu Tao.
- Hu Tao + Xingqiu + Yelan + Kazuha — Replaces Zhongli with Kazuha for grouping, Pyro and Hydro RES shred via Viridescent Venerer, and an Elemental DMG Bonus buff from his EM share passive. Trades shielding for higher reaction-amplified damage. Excellent in grouped enemy scenarios.
Classic Vaporize Team
Before double Hydro became widespread, Hu Tao’s core team was Xingqiu, Zhongli, and a flex support. This remains one of the most reliable and accessible compositions.
- Hu Tao + Xingqiu + Zhongli + Albedo — A staple team. Xingqiu provides Hydro and Rain Sword protection. Zhongli shields and shreds resistance. Albedo provides off-field Geo sub-DPS from his Elemental Skill Blossoms and Geo Resonance DMG bonus when paired with Zhongli. A smooth and self-contained team for all content.
- Hu Tao + Xingqiu + Zhongli + Sucrose — Sucrose replaces Albedo for Elemental Mastery share buffing, enemy grouping, and Viridescent Venerer resistance shred. Better for multi-target scenarios than Albedo. An accessible F2P-friendly composition that performs well in Spiral Abyss.
F2P Vaporize Team
For players who lack 5-star support characters, Hu Tao still performs admirably in accessible team setups.
- Hu Tao + Xingqiu + Sucrose + Diona — Xingqiu handles Hydro. Sucrose groups enemies and provides EM share. Diona provides healing through her Burst and a shield to maintain Hu Tao’s low-HP threshold safely. All four characters are 4-stars (Hu Tao excluded) and widely available from the Standard Banner or as featured 4-stars, making this an excellent starting team before 5-star supports are obtained.
Hu Tao Talent Priority
Recommended talent upgrade order: Normal Attack = Elemental Skill > Burst.
Normal Attack and Elemental Skill are equally important and should be levelled together. The Normal Attack talent governs Charged Attack and Blood Blossom damage multipliers — the core of her DPS. The Elemental Skill’s talent level also directly affects Blood Blossom damage and the overall potency of the Paramita Papilio state. Both should be levelled to the same level throughout and crowned for maximum investment. The Burst is the third priority as it contributes damage and healing but represents a smaller fraction of total per-rotation output than the other two talents.
Hu Tao Ascension Materials
Here is everything you need to fully ascend Hu Tao to Level 90. Notably, all her materials come from Liyue — making this one of the most region-concentrated farming routes in the game.

Hu Tao Lore and Character Background
Hu Tao is the 77th Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor — Liyue’s most prestigious and ancient funeral service, responsible for properly sending the deceased onward according to Liyue’s customs and the laws of the Underworld. She inherited the directorship at a remarkably young age and has thrown herself into the role with an enthusiasm that many find unsettling, given the subject matter. For Hu Tao, however, death is not a morbid subject but a profound and philosophical one — the final passage, the boundary between the living and what lies beyond, and a subject worthy of deep respect and artistic expression.
Her personality is electric. Hu Tao is spontaneous, mischievous, and endlessly energetic — the kind of person who leaves a room more chaotic than she found it, but in a way that is somehow charming rather than merely disruptive. She is a skilled poet, though her verse is a matter of considerable debate among Liyue’s literary community. She considers her own work brilliant. Others are less certain. She is fond of pranks and surprises, and her relationship with the rules of the Parlor is best described as creative.
What makes Hu Tao genuinely compelling as a character is what lies beneath the theatrical energy. She has a sincere and deeply personal relationship with death that comes from having been raised in the Parlor and spending her formative years surrounded by questions of mortality and what follows. She is not afraid of death and does not see it as a tragedy by default — she sees it as a transition that deserves dignity and care. This perspective gives her an unusual serenity beneath the eccentricity. She made her story debut alongside the Lantern Rite Festival and features prominently in the lore of Liyue’s relationship with Rex Lapis and the Underworld.

Hu Tao Playstyle Tips and Rotation Advice
- Never use Bennett in Hu Tao teams — His Burst heals her above 50% HP almost immediately, removing her Sanguine Rouge 33% Pyro DMG bonus and reducing her damage significantly. Replace him with Zhongli, Kazuha, Albedo, or any non-healing support.
- Standard rotation — Deploy all off-field supports (Xingqiu Burst + Skill, Yelan Burst + Skill, Zhongli Skill) → switch to Hu Tao → use Elemental Skill to enter Paramita Papilio → chain Charged Attacks through the 9-second window → use Burst at the end if needed for healing or burst damage → swap back to supports.
- HP management is the core skill — The Skill itself drains 30% of current HP. Furina’s summons and the fight’s incoming damage should bring her to sub-50% HP during the Skill window. Monitor HP carefully and avoid over-healing between rotations.
- Aim for sub-50% HP going into your Charged Attack chain — This activates the Sanguine Rouge bonus. If you are above 50% HP mid-rotation and the bonus is not active, your damage is noticeably lower. Prioritise draining HP to this threshold before or immediately after activating the Skill.
- At C0: manage Stamina carefully — Without C1, Charged Attacks cost Stamina inside Paramita Papilio. Use Normal Attacks occasionally to break up Charged Attack chains and recover Stamina. A common C0 rhythm is N1C or N2C (one or two Normal Attacks before each Charged Attack) rather than continuous Charged Attacks.
- At C1: chain freely — All Charged Attacks inside the Skill stance are Stamina-free. Focus purely on maximising the number of Charged Attacks in the 9-second window without worrying about Stamina at all.
- Save the Burst for low HP or clutch moments — Her Burst heals her based on enemies hit. In low-HP emergencies, the Burst both deals damage and restores HP simultaneously. Do not always cast it simply because it is available — prioritise the Charged Attack window during Paramita Papilio instead.
