Excellent long-range single-target damage — Ningguang deals strong focused Geo damage from range, making her particularly effective against bosses and larger enemies where her gem projectiles do not pass through targets.

Geo has limited reaction synergy — Unlike Pyro or Electro characters, Geo does not amplify or transform reactions like Vaporize or Aggravate. Crystallize is her main reaction, which provides shields rather than direct damage amplification.

Ningguang’s Abilities and Talents

Normal Attack – Sparkling Scatter

Ningguang fires two gems that deal Geo damage on each Normal Attack hit. Each hit grants her one Star Jade, up to a maximum of three at a time. Her Charged Attack fires a large gem that deals Geo damage. When she has Star Jades stacked, the Charged Attack also fires all accumulated Star Jades at the enemy simultaneously for bonus damage. At C0, the A1 passive removes Stamina cost from Charged Attacks whenever she has at least one Star Jade. This makes her Normal → Charged Attack loop one of the most stamina-efficient sustained DPS rotations in the game. At C6, Starshatter generates 7 Star Jades after cast, making the immediate follow-up Charged Attack a devastating burst of simultaneous gem projectiles.

Elemental Skill – Jade Screen

Ningguang summons a Jade Screen in front of her, dealing AoE Geo damage. The Jade Screen is a Geo construct that persists for 30 seconds, blocks incoming enemy projectiles, and counts toward the maximum Geo construct limit on the field. Any character who passes through the Jade Screen gains a 12% Geo DMG Bonus for 10 seconds thanks to her A4 passive. Always walk through the screen after placing it and especially before casting her Burst. The Jade Screen also fires six additional gem projectiles when Starshatter is cast nearby, massively amplifying the Burst’s damage. Position the screen carefully before every Burst to guarantee these extra projectiles land.

Elemental Burst – Starshatter

Ningguang gathers a massive number of gems and scatters them all at once, sending homing projectiles at enemies and dealing Geo damage per hit. If a Jade Screen is nearby when Starshatter is cast, the screen fires six additional gem projectiles simultaneously — nearly doubling the effective number of hits from the Burst. This additional volley is one of the biggest sources of her total DPS. Her Burst has a 40-cost energy requirement and a 12-second cooldown, making it one of the most frequently usable Bursts in the game. At C6, using Starshatter immediately generates 7 Star Jades, allowing her to follow up with an enormously powerful Charged Attack right after the Burst.

Passive Talents

Backup Plan (A1) — When Ningguang has Star Jades in her possession, her Charged Attack does not consume Stamina. This makes her sustained rotation comfortable and frictionless even in long fights.
Strategic Reserve (A4) — A character that passes through the Jade Screen gains a 12% Geo DMG Bonus for 10 seconds. This buff applies to any character, including Ningguang herself. Always move through the screen before engaging in her Burst rotation.

Lost Prayer to the Sacred Winds (Best On-Field) — Provides a strong CRIT Rate substat and a passive that stacks Elemental DMG Bonus every 4 seconds she is on the field, up to four stacks for 32% bonus. Because Ningguang’s flexible playstyle keeps her on the field for meaningful durations, she can make excellent use of these stacks. One of her best weapons for sustained DPS builds.
Kagura’s Verity — Provides CRIT DMG as a substat and stacks Elemental DMG Bonus each time the Elemental Skill is used. Ningguang uses her Skill regularly, meaning this weapon can reach high stack counts over a rotation. Strong in both DPS and quickswap builds.
Cashflow Supervision — Particularly strong when paired with Furina, as the HP change passive procs frequently in teams that use Furina’s HP drain mechanic. Provides solid ATK and DMG bonuses in the right team context.

Solar Pearl (Best 4-Star — Battle Pass) — Provides a CRIT Rate substat and a passive that increases Elemental Burst DMG after a Normal Attack hit and Normal Attack DMG after a Skill or Burst hit. This passive aligns naturally with Ningguang’s rotation of Normal Attacks → Charged Attack → Skill → Burst. Her most recommended 4-star weapon overall.
The Widsith — A strong wish-pool weapon with CRIT DMG as a substat and a passive that grants one of three random buffs (ATK%, Elemental DMG Bonus, or Elemental Mastery) for 10 seconds every 30 seconds. The ATK% and Elemental DMG Bonus procs align with Ningguang’s Burst windows. Slightly inconsistent due to the random nature of the buff but very powerful when the right effect triggers.
Flowing Purity (Craftable) — A craftable option with ATK as a substat and a passive that builds Bond of Life stacks to grant an ATK bonus. Nighttime Whispers in the Echoing Woods (4-Piece) – Best in Slot

This is Ningguang’s new best-in-slot artifact set released in Version 4.3. The 2-piece bonus increases ATK by 18%. The 4-piece bonus provides a Geo DMG Bonus after using an Elemental Skill, which becomes even stronger when the active character is shielded by Crystallize. Because Ningguang regularly uses her Jade Screen Skill and naturally picks up Crystallize shards from Geo reactions, she maintains this buff comfortably and consistently. This set is the top recommendation for both her Main DPS and Burst DPS builds.

2-Piece Archaic Petra + 2-Piece ATK% Set

Before Nighttime Whispers was released, this was Ningguang’s standard setup and it remains a strong alternative if your Nighttime Whispers pieces have poor substats. Archaic Petra’s 2-piece bonus gives 15% Geo DMG Bonus, and combining it with a 2-piece Gladiator’s Finale or Shimenawa’s Reminiscence provides an 18% ATK boost. This mixed combination is reliable and flexible, and still competitive if you already have well-rolled pieces.

Noblesse Oblige (4-Piece) – Team Buffer Alternative

If no other teammate holds Noblesse Oblige, equipping it on Ningguang allows her Burst to grant all party members a 20% ATK boost. This is particularly relevant in quickswap Burst DPS builds where she swaps in, uses her Burst, and swaps out. The team-wide ATK buff adds value for all damage dealers. Only use this if no other teammate already holds the set, as the buff does not stack.

Recommended Substats

Prioritise CRIT DMG and CRIT Rate first, then ATK%. A small amount of Energy Recharge is helpful to maintain her 40-cost Burst on cooldown, but because her Burst costs only 40 Energy and has a 12-second cooldown, her ER needs are far lower than most other characters. Around 120–130% Energy Recharge is generally sufficient.

Ningguang Constellations Guide

Ningguang is a Standard Banner 4-star, which means constellations come naturally over time from Standard Banner wishes, guaranteed 4-star pulls, and Starglitter exchanges. Her constellations are among the most impactful of any 4-star in the game. C2 in particular is a must-have upgrade that significantly changes her rotation.

C1 – Piercing Fragments: When a Normal Attack hits, it deals AoE damage. This turns her single-target Normal Attacks into small AoE hits, improving her performance in multi-enemy scenarios and making her more consistent against groups. Not essential but a welcome quality-of-life and damage upgrade.
C2 – Shock Effect (Most Important Constellation): When the Jade Screen is shattered, its cooldown resets. This can occur once every 6 seconds. This constellation completely changes Ningguang’s rotation. She can now cast Jade Screen, cast Starshatter Burst (which shatters the screen), and immediately recast Jade Screen again in the same rotation. This provides near-100% uptime on her A4 Geo DMG Bonus passive, generates more Elemental Particles for better Energy generation, and adds another Skill hit of damage per rotation. C3 – Majesty Be the Array of Stars: Increases the level of Starshatter (Burst) by 3, up to a maximum of level 15. A direct and meaningful damage increase to her most important ability. A strong upgrade after C2.
C4 – Exquisite Be the Jade, Outshining All Beneath: The Jade Screen increases nearby characters’ Elemental Resistance by 10%. A minor defensive buff that adds some survivability for the on-field character standing near the screen. Situationally useful but not a significant power spike.
C5 – Invincible Be the Jade Screen: Increases the level of Jade Screen (Elemental Skill) by 3, up to a maximum of level 15. Increases Skill damage, which is a good bonus especially in multi-target scenarios where the AoE Skill hits more enemies.
C6 – Grandeur Be the Seven Stars (Second Best Constellation): When Starshatter is cast, Ningguang gains 7 Star Jades. This allows her to immediately follow her Burst with a massively empowered Charged Attack that fires all 7 Star Jades simultaneously, dealing enormous single-target damage in a single hit. This constellation significantly raises her burst damage ceiling and changes her talent priority so Normal Attack is valued equally with Burst. A top-tier constellation that rewards full investment.

Ningguang’s Best Team Compositions

Ningguang performs best in Geo-focused teams that leverage Geo Resonance. She can also serve as a sub-DPS or Burst support in non-Geo teams. Her flexible field time makes her adaptable to many rosters.

Mono Geo / Double Geo DPS Team

Ningguang’s most powerful and consistent team type. Geo Resonance — triggered when two or more Geo characters are in the party — grants a 15% DMG bonus to all characters when the active character is shielded, and increases shield strength by 15%. This passive DMG boost applies permanently when a Zhongli shield is active, making it one of the strongest resonance bonuses in the game.

Ningguang + Zhongli + Albedo + flex — Zhongli provides an unbreakable shield for the Geo Resonance DMG bonus, and his pillar adds off-field Geo sub-DPS. Albedo adds significant off-field Geo DPS through his Elemental Skill Blossoms and buffs Elemental Mastery for the team with his Burst. The flex slot can be Bennett for ATK buffs and healing, or another support like Xilonen for resistance shred.
Ningguang + Zhongli + Bennett + Xiangling — A versatile team where Ningguang provides Geo damage and Geo Resonance with Zhongli while Bennett ATK buffs and heals and Xiangling deals off-field Pyro sub-DPS. Ningguang picks up Crystallize shards from Pyro reactions for shields, and Bennett’s Burst boosts her Burst rotations.

Burst DPS / Quickswap Ningguang

In quickswap teams, Ningguang swaps in, places her Jade Screen, passes through it for the 12% Geo DMG Bonus, and immediately uses Starshatter for a large single burst of Geo damage before swapping back out. This playstyle takes advantage of her low Burst cost and 12-second cooldown to contribute significant burst damage without requiring extended field time.

Ningguang + Raiden Shogun + Furina + Xilonen — Raiden buffs Elemental Burst DMG and provides Energy for the team. Furina’s Fanfare mechanic amplifies all team damage including Ningguang’s Burst. Xilonen shreds elemental resistance and heals. Ningguang contributes her Burst every rotation for Geo damage.
Ningguang + Hu Tao + Xingqiu + Zhongli — Ningguang slots in as a Geo sub-DPS alongside Zhongli for Geo Resonance. Hu Tao drives Vaporize on Xingqiu’s Hydro, while Zhongli’s shield ensures the Geo Resonance 15% DMG bonus applies. Ningguang contributes Burst damage in each rotation.

Double Geo Flex Team

This setup pairs Ningguang with one other Geo character for Resonance and uses the remaining two slots for various synergy picks depending on your roster.

Ningguang + Yun Jin + Bennett + flex — Yun Jin boosts Normal Attack damage for Ningguang’s gem shots with her Burst. Bennett provides ATK buffs and healing. This setup turns Ningguang’s sustained Normal Attack loop into a more powerful damage source between Burst cooldowns.
Ningguang + Xiao + Jean + Zhongli — Ningguang serves as a Geo sub-DPS and batteries the team for Geo Resonance while Xiao is the main on-field DPS. Jean heals and provides Anemo support. Zhongli shields. A comfortable multi-purpose team that also accommodates Ningguang’s Jade Screen utility.

F2P Team

Ningguang is an excellent F2P option. Even without premium 5-star supports, she performs well in accessible team setups.

Ningguang + Kaeya + Xiangling + Noelle — Noelle provides both a shield and healing while also giving Geo Resonance. Kaeya and Xiangling apply Cryo and Pyro for Melt reactions and Crystallize shards. Ningguang deals the primary damage. A solid all-purpose team for early and mid-game Spiral Abyss progress that requires no limited 5-star characters.

Ningguang Talent Priority

Recommended talent upgrade order: Burst > Normal Attack > Skill (before C6) and Burst = Normal Attack > Skill (at C6).

The Burst is always top priority because it is Ningguang’s biggest single damage output per rotation, especially with the Jade Screen’s additional projectiles firing alongside it. Normal Attack becomes equally important at C6 because the 7 Star Jades it generates lead directly into an enormous Charged Attack that rivals the Burst’s own damage. The Elemental Skill is the lowest priority but still contributes meaningful damage — particularly in multi-target scenarios where its AoE hits multiple enemies — so level it eventually as well.

Ningguang is a Standard Banner 4-star character and one of the most accessible characters in the game.

Wanderlust Invocation (Standard Banner) — Ningguang has been available on the Standard Banner since Version 1.0. She can be obtained at any time through Standard Banner pulls.
Event Wish Featured 4-Star — Ningguang appears regularly as a featured 4-star on limited Event Wish banners throughout the game’s history. She has one of the highest rerun counts of any 4-star character.
Starglitter Exchange — She appears periodically in Paimon’s Bargains and can be purchased with Masterless Starglitter.

Always pass through the Jade Screen before Bursting — Her A4 passive gives 12% Geo DMG Bonus when crossing the screen. Walk through it every time before pressing Q for free extra damage on Starshatter.
Position Jade Screen to fire with Burst — The screen fires 6 additional projectiles when Starshatter is cast nearby. Place it directly in front of you and close to enemies before casting. This nearly doubles the number of Burst projectiles hitting targets.
C2 rotation — At C2, cast Jade Screen → cast Starshatter (the Burst shatters the screen) → immediately cast Jade Screen again. This gives you two screens per rotation, near-permanent A4 Geo DMG bonus, and more Elemental Particles.
