TL;DR
- Legendary creatures are invisible on your map until you acquire knowledge of them.
- Buy Sighting Documents from merchants once you hit 100 Trust with them.
- Saddlery and Tannery merchants have the best chance of giving sighting documents.
- Read the document in your inventory, then check Others → Knowledge → Creatures → Legendary.
- Use the map icon revealed by the document to track the creature’s location.
- Kill the legendary wolf Black Fang to get Leebur’s Soul, which reveals all legendary animal locations permanently.
- Not all legendary creatures are for hunting — three of them are rideable horses.
Legendary creatures in Crimson Desert don’t just roam the map waiting to be found. The game hides them behind a sighting system. If you don’t know the system, you can wander Pywel for hours and never see a single legendary animal. This guide breaks down exactly how the system works and how to use it efficiently.

Why You Can’t Just Find Legendary Creatures By Exploring
Most open-world RPGs let you stumble onto rare animals by chance. Crimson Desert doesn’t work that way. Legendary creatures are effectively hidden from the map until you have the specific knowledge to track them.

There are two reasons this trips players up:
1. No map icon without knowledge.
A legendary creature could be standing 50 meters away and it won’t show up on your map. Until you’ve read the relevant Sighting Document, the creature’s map marker simply doesn’t exist.
2. Visual subtlety.
Even when you’re standing in the right area, legendary creatures often look very similar to regular ones. Without knowing their specific physical trait, you’ll walk right past them. For example, the Vine Deer looks like a regular deer — except it has flowers blooming from its antlers that change with each season.
The solution to both problems is the merchant trust system.

Step 1 — Build Merchant Trust To 100
The entire sighting system runs through merchant relationships. You need to reach 100 Trust with specific merchants before they’ll offer you Sighting Documents.
The two merchant types with the highest chance of carrying sighting documents are:
- Saddlery merchants (saddle and horse gear vendors)
- Tannery merchants (leather and hide goods vendors)
That said, many other merchant types can also carry creature sighting documents at 100 Trust. Building trust broadly is always worth your time in Crimson Desert. If you want to understand the full trust system, read our guide on how to gain trust with merchants and trade agreements.
Pro tip: Save your game before spending resources to max out trust with any merchant. If the merchant doesn’t produce a new item when you hit 100 Trust, reload and try a different one. It saves you a lot of silver.
Step 2 — Purchase and Read the Sighting Document
Once you’ve hit 100 Trust, open the merchant’s shop. You’ll notice their inventory has expanded. Look for a Sighting Document — it’s usually near the bottom of the list.
Buy the document and open your inventory. Find the document and read it. This consumes the item and adds the knowledge to your character permanently.
Step 3 — Check the Knowledge Menu
After reading the document, the information is stored in your Knowledge tab.

Here’s where to find it:
- Press the Others button (default: H on PC, Options/Menu on console)
- Navigate to the Knowledge section
- Open the Creatures tab
- Select the Legendary Creatures sub-tab
Inside this tab, you’ll find an entry for every legendary creature you’ve learned about. Each entry includes:
- A description of the creature’s appearance
- What makes it visually unique compared to regular animals
- General information about its habitat and behavior
This is the key step most players skip. Reading the knowledge entry tells you exactly what to look for when you’re in the field. Without it, even being in the right location won’t help.
Step 4 — Use the Map to Find the Location

After learning a Sighting Document, a map icon will appear for that creature’s territory. Open your world map and look for the new marker.
The icon typically lands close to where the creature actually roams. Head to the marked area, then use the visual description from the Knowledge tab to identify it among regular animals in the herd or pack.

Step 5 — Spot the Creature Using Its Unique Trait
This is where the Knowledge entry really pays off. Every legendary creature has a specific visual detail that sets it apart.
Using the Vine Deer as an example: regular deer in the area have plain antlers. The Vine Deer has flowers blooming from its antlers. The flower color and type also changes by season, so knowing this helps you confirm you’ve found the right animal even before you engage.
Always read the full Knowledge entry before heading to the location. It saves you a lot of time standing in a field trying to guess which one is legendary.
The Fast Route — Kill Black Fang the Legendary Wolf
If you’d rather skip building merchant trust for every single creature, there is a shortcut.

Black Fang is the legendary wolf of Hernand. He lives in the Forest of Wolves in Hernandian Territory. You can find him through the main Hernand faction quests — specifically the House Celeste Faction Quest called “Howls from North Gate”. Keep completing Hernand quests until this mission appears, then track and fight the wolf.
Once you defeat Black Fang, he drops a key item called Leebur’s Soul. Use it from your inventory and it will permanently reveal the locations of all legendary animals on your map — no Sighting Documents needed.
This is the most efficient approach if you’re further into the game. Our full guide on finding the legendary wolf Black Fang and all legendary animal locations covers the exact spots where Black Fang appears and the best strategy to beat him.
Legendary Creatures That Are Mounts, Not Targets
Not every legendary creature in Crimson Desert is meant to be hunted. Some are rideable mounts. The three legendary horses are the clearest example.
There are three legendary horses in Pywel:
- Royler — Fastest horse in the game. Highest stamina. Found near Snowgrass Hearth in Pailune, just south of the “P” on the map by a small pond. Best for open-world travel.
- Rokade — Highest health of any horse. Found in southern Hernand near the Steel Mountains, grazing by a small lake west of the Spire of Insight. Best for surviving combat on horseback.
- Camora — Highest attack and defense stats. Found in the Redtree Forest in the southern Crimson Desert region, east of the Sanctum of Renunciation. Best for mounted combat.
Legendary horses don’t require Sighting Documents. They appear on the map in specific locations. The challenge with them isn’t finding them — it’s taming them. They fight much harder than regular horses during the taming minigame. You’ll need solid stamina before attempting any of the three. Check out our dedicated legendary horses locations guide for specific map coordinates and taming tips. You can also read our full horse guide to understand horse stats, skills, and upgrades.
Other Legendary Animal Types
Beyond wolves and horses, Pywel is home to several other categories of legendary wildlife. Most follow the same rules — find a sighting document, check your knowledge menu, use the map marker.
A few types worth noting:
- Legendary Bears — Heavily armored and aggressive. You can actually mount bears temporarily during combat in Pailune, but permanent bear mounts work differently.
- Legendary Deer — The Vine Deer is the most well-known example, with its seasonal flower antlers.
- Legendary Birds — Some appear as rare field encounters in specific weather conditions.
The reward for hunting legendary animals varies. Some drop rare crafting materials. Others unlock map markers for nearby points of interest. And some, like Black Fang, drop one-of-a-kind key items.
Tips To Make This Easier
Maximize merchant trust early, not late.
The sooner you start building trust with Saddlery and Tannery merchants, the sooner Sighting Documents become available. Don’t wait until you’re deep into the story to start this. Read our guide on how to trade goods to speed this up.
Save before hitting 100 Trust.
Not every merchant rewards you with a Sighting Document when you max out trust. Saving first lets you reload if you don’t get what you need.
Do Hernand faction quests early.
Black Fang’s quest appears through House Celeste faction content. The sooner you knock out those quests, the sooner you can unlock all legendary animal locations in one shot via Leebur’s Soul.
Bring good healing items.
Legendary animals fight back hard. Pack your best healing food before any legendary hunt.
Raise your combat stats before going after legendary wolves or bears.
These aren’t passive targets. Check our guides on how to increase your Attack Level and Defense Level first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I find legendary creatures without Sighting Documents?
You can enter their territory, but they won’t appear on your map and their unique visual traits won’t be explained. Some players get lucky, but without the knowledge entry, you’re guessing. The Sighting Document system is the intended method.
Do legendary creatures respawn after I kill them?
Yes. Legendary animals respawn after a period of time. You won’t permanently lose access to any of them.
Is Black Fang the only way to unlock all legendary animal locations at once?
Yes. Leebur’s Soul, dropped by Black Fang, is the only item that mass-reveals all legendary animal map icons simultaneously.
Do legendary horses count as legendary creatures for the sighting system?
No. Legendary horses have fixed locations on the map and don’t require Sighting Documents. They’re separate from the standard legendary creature tracking system.
What’s the best merchant type to target first?
Saddlery merchants. They’re common in every major settlement and tend to stock sighting documents for creatures in their surrounding region.
