TL;DR
- There are 5 witches in Crimson Desert, each found in a specific region of Pywel.
- Witches hide in “fake forms.” Help an NPC in distress to reveal each witch’s real location.
- Every witch (except Sylvia) gives you sanctums to cleanse. Complete them to earn a Witch’s Token.
- Collect all 4 tokens and visit the Wayward Woods Witch Hideout to meet the White Crow.
- Final reward: Icewing Plate Cloak and the Oakwood Mushroom Tea Recipe.
- Witches are your main source of Abyss Gear socketing, which powers up your build.
Finding all the witches in Crimson Desert takes real effort. They don’t show up on your map. They don’t wave you down. Instead, each witch disguises herself as a random NPC in trouble. You help her. She reveals where she really lives. Then the real work begins.
This guide covers every witch in the game — their names, where to find their disguised forms, where their actual houses are, which sanctums they own, and what you get for finishing everything. If you want to power up your Abyss Gear builds, you need all five of these women on your side.
You can play Crimson Desert on PC via Steam, Epic Games, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Why Witches Matter in Crimson Desert
Before jumping into locations, here’s the short version of why you need to find these witches.
Witches are the only ones who can socket Abyss Gears into your weapons and armor. These are stat-boosting mods that improve attack, defense, speed, and other attributes. You pick up Abyss Gears early in the game, but you can’t use them until you find a witch. Don’t sell them. Hold onto every one you collect.
Each witch offers these core services:
- Embed Abyss Gears — Socket a gear into an unlocked slot on your equipment.
- Extract Abyss Gears — Pull a gear out of an item (useful before selling old gear).
- Create Socket — Unlock a slot on your weapon or armor. This costs silver.
- Craft Abyss Gears — Make gears if you have the recipe (not available at every witch).
- Buy/Sell — Purchase blueprints, Abyss Artifacts, and Faded Abyss Artifacts.
The more witches you unlock, the more options you have. Always activate the fast travel point near each witch’s house. You’ll be coming back often.

Witch 1 — The Hermit Witch (Sylvia) Location

Region: Hernand
Unlocked: Chapter 3 (after the White Crow delivers a letter)

Sylvia is the first witch you meet. She’s found in Shadow’s Whisper Cave, located north of Hernand City. You don’t need to help a disguised NPC here. A white crow appears after completing the Abyss Without Balance puzzle and delivers a letter, starting the Hermit Witch Faction Quest. Follow the quest marker to Sylvia’s cave.
Important warning: Do not enter Shadow’s Whisper Cave before you receive the letter from the white crow. There’s a known bug where Sylvia disappears if you visit the cave too early.
Sylvia doesn’t offer crafting or quests. She’s a straightforward gear vendor. She has no sanctums to cleanse, and she won’t give you a Witch’s Token. But she’s the fastest way to start socketing your early gear.
Witch 2 — Witch of Wisdom (Elowen) Location

Region: Hernand
Unlocked: Chapter 5 (main story quest — “The Missing Seal”)
Elowen is the only witch tied directly to the main story. You’ll find her naturally during Chapter 5: Guest Unbidden – Black and White, after defeating the Kearush boss. A bird delivers a letter. Read the Unsealed Letter in your inventory to trigger the quest.
First Meeting (Fake Form)

Head to a small house southeast of The Witchwoods in Hernand. You’ll hear a woman screaming from inside. The door is locked and thorns block the entrance. Look up. Climb the scaffolding and enter through a hole in the roof. Untie the woman inside. She reveals herself as the Witch of Wisdom and marks her real house on your map.
Second Meeting (Real House)

Travel north of The Witchwoods to find a house surrounded by red flowers and a fountain. Activate the nearby Abyss Nexus. Enter and speak with Elowen to unlock her full workshop. She also has a Cauldron inside, making her house the best spot for alchemy crafting in Hernand.
Don’t leave without checking the tower next to her house. There’s a treasure chest at the top. Jump to the closed window to reach it.
Elowen’s Sanctums (Hernand Region)
- Sanctum of Temperance
- Sanctum of Absolution
- Sanctum of Benediction
- Sanctum of Penitence
Clear all four and return to Elowen to complete her questline and collect a Witch’s Token.
Witch 3 — Witch of Kindness (Bari) Location

Region: Pailune
Unlocked: Help a freezing woman near Silver Wolf Mountain
Bari is not part of the main story. You have to find her yourself.
First Meeting (Fake Form)

Head southeast of Wayward Woods in Pailune and climb the mountains near Silverwolf Cave. You’ll find a woman shivering in front of a brazier under a small tent. Light the brazier to warm her up. She reveals herself as Bari, the Witch of Kindness, and marks her real house on your map.
Second Meeting (Real House)

Bari’s house sits in the middle of a lake south of Silver Wolf Mountain. Head inside to speak with her and unlock her workshop. She runs the same Abyss Gear services as Elowen.
Bari’s Sanctums (Pailune Region)
- Sanctum of Exaltation
- Sanctum of Solace
- Sanctum of Deliverance
- Sanctum of Atonement
Cleanse all four and return to Bari to finish her questline and get your Witch’s Token.
Witch 4 — Witch of Humility (Lyselia) Location

Region: Demeniss / Pailune
Unlocked: Chapter 7 (help a man falling off a bridge near Beighen)
Lyselia’s fake form is far from her real home. This one requires travel across two different regions.
First Meeting (Fake Form)

Travel to the southeastern parts of Pailune and head to the Denn River near Beighen, which you visit naturally during Chapter 7. Find the man who’s about to fall from a ruined bridge. Help him up. This triggers the Witch of Humility’s questline and reveals her real location.
Second Meeting (Real House)

Lyselia’s actual home is in the Serpent Marsh, deep in the south. Look for a hidden cave entrance between two mountains near an Abyss Nexus fast travel point. You may need to climb to find the entrance. Follow the colorful flags inside the cave to find Lyselia.
You can also reach her during Chapter 9’s story content, so don’t stress if you haven’t gone there yet.
Lyselia’s Sanctums (Demeniss Region)
- Sanctum of Devotion
- Sanctum of Veneration
- Sanctum of Faith
- Sanctum of Oblation
Cleanse all four and speak with Lyselia again to earn your Witch’s Token.
Witch 5 — Witch of Strength (Areciel) Location
Region: Crimson Desert (Tashkalp Territory)
Unlocked: Must complete Chapter 8 and start Chapter 9 first
Areciel is the hardest witch to reach. The Crimson Desert region is locked until you’ve progressed far enough into the main story. If you try to enter too early, the game will force you back out.
First Meeting (Fake Form)

Explore the Tommaso Fork Posthouse in Tashkalp Territory. Near the wooden notice board, you’ll find a beggar (who appears as a child). Give them some copper coins. They reveal the location of Areciel’s house.
The exact spot is under the first “A” in Tashkalp on the map.
Second Meeting (Real House)

Head northwest of World’s Navel toward Urdavah. Climb the mountain. Areciel’s house is built halfway up the cliff. Go up the planks to the second floor to find her.
Areciel’s Sanctums (Crimson Desert Region)
Areciel has fewer sanctums than the other witches — only three:
- Sanctum of Expiation
- Sanctum of Renunciation
- Sanctum of Revelation
Cleanse all three, return to Areciel, and collect your Witch’s Token.
The 5th Witch — White Crow (Wayward Woods Witch Hideout)

Once you’ve earned all 4 Witch’s Tokens from Elowen, Bari, Lyselia, and Areciel, the final witch becomes accessible.
Head to the Wayward Woods Witch Hideout, located deep inside the foggy woods on the western side of Pailune. Leave Pailune City and follow the dirt path southwest. Watch for a mysterious energy zone along the way — explore it to open a nearby Abyss Nexus.
Find the Hideout and use all 4 tokens on the door slots to unlock it. Inside, you’ll meet the White Crow — the same crow who delivered letters to you throughout the game.
Speak with her to complete the Protector of the Abyss Faction Quest.
Open the nearby chest to collect the Icewing Plate Cloak. There’s also an Oakwood Mushroom Tea Recipe on a nearby shelf. Don’t overlook it.

Sanctum Tips Before You Start
Sanctums are guarded by Antumbra cultists — some regular, some boss-level. Each sanctum also has a puzzle that uses your Axiom Force and the Kuku Pot to slot pieces into ancient generators.
A few things to know:
- You cannot cleanse a sanctum until you’ve met the witch who owns it. You can kill the enemies, but the puzzle won’t activate.
- If you drop a puzzle piece and walk too far away, it will despawn. You can recover it from the Lost Item bin at base camp for 10 silver.
- Some sanctums have tricky hidden components — burn vines, drain pools, or find collapsed floors to access missing pieces.
- Pack healing items before each run.
For specific sanctum puzzles, we have detailed walkthroughs across the site. Check out our guides for the Sanctorum of Darkness Abyss, the Loop of Life Abyss, and many others. If you’re struggling with flying enemies in sanctums, read our guide on how to beat flying enemies in Crimson Desert.
Using Axiom Force correctly is key to solving these puzzles. Make sure you understand the mechanic before diving in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you miss any witches permanently?
Sylvia is the only witch you can technically miss, due to a bug that removes her if you enter her cave before getting the quest letter. All other witches remain accessible indefinitely.
Do all witches offer the same services?
Not exactly. Sylvia offers basic socketing only. Elowen and the others offer crafting, buying, and selling as well.
What happens if I sell Abyss Gears before finding a witch?
They’re gone. You can’t recover sold items. Hold onto every Abyss Gear you find.
Can I track witch quests in the journal?
Yes. Go to Journal → Faction Quests → Hernand Witches to track all progress.
What’s the final reward for finding all witches?
The Icewing Plate Cloak and the Oakwood Mushroom Tea Recipe from the White Crow’s chest in the Wayward Woods Witch Hideout.
