Step 1 — Reach the New Camp
The Free Mine is located on the west side of the Colony, past the New Camp. You need to go through the New Camp to get there, so reaching it is the first step.
There are two ways to get to the New Camp safely:
- Use Mordrag as an escort. In the Old Camp, speak to Mordrag near the south gate about his problem, then ask about the New Camp. He will walk you there and fight off enemies along the route, earning you free XP on the way.

Step 2 — Navigate to the Free Mine
Once you are inside the New Camp, make your way to the upper section of the settlement. This is where the main buildings, merchants, and key NPCs are located. From here, you need to continue past the camp toward the Free Mine.
Here is the path from the New Camp to the Free Mine:
- Face the large glowing purple area below the camp. Then turn around and head left.
- Follow the left wall and keep moving forward along the hillside path.
- You will reach a path cutting through the mountains. Pass through the open wooden entrance.
- Continue forward past several Scavengers in the area.
- After a short walk, you will arrive at the Free Mine entrance.
A Mercenary near the entrance may start a brief conversation when you arrive. Keep it short and continue inside. Watch out for Wolves and Mole Rats along this stretch — save before going too far if your combat skills are still low.
Step 3 — Find Swiney Inside the Mine
Head down into the Free Mine from the entrance. Look for the first shack on the left side near the entrance. Swiney is the NPC standing nearby. He is easy to spot once you are inside — do not go deep into the mine, he is close to the entrance area.
Walk up to Swiney and start a conversation with him.
Step 4 — Say the Right Things to Get the Armor
When speaking with Swiney, tell him that you want to work as a Scrapper — meaning you want to join the diggers at the Free Mine. He will then ask you whether you have worked a vein before.
Answer “Yes.”
Swiney takes you at your word and hands over the Digger’s Dress as standard kit for starting the job. The armor is yours at no cost, with no combat and no Ore Nuggets required.
