How to reach the New Camp in Gothic 1 Remake is one of the first things you will want to figure out after settling into the Old Camp. The New Camp is on the west side of The Colony, up in the hills, and the path there is full of wolves, molerats, and other early threats that can end a run fast if you go unprepared. This guide covers both ways to get there — with Mordrag as your escort or on your own — plus everything you need to know about the Out of Sight quest that makes the trip worthwhile.

Why Visit the New Camp Early?

You do not need to commit to joining the New Camp just because you visit it. Even if you ultimately decide to join another camp, visiting the New Camp early is worth doing for the experience, quests, and rewards available there.

Going there early also marks it on your map, opens up additional quests, and lets you meet key NPCs like Lares and Cronos. The New Camp has unique vendors, a water mage trainer who can raise your mana, and faction-specific quests that reward good Ore. There is no downside to visiting.

Method One: Let Mordrag Escort You (Recommended)

This is the best way to reach the New Camp, especially early in the game. There are NPCs in the Old Camp who can escort you, such as Mordrag near the south gate or Baal Parvez near the marketplace. They will handle creatures along the way, allowing you to travel safely while still gaining experience.

Step 1 — Talk to Thorus First

Simply speak to Thorus at the Old Camp and interact with him until he gives you the Out of Sight quest, which tasks you with getting rid of Mordrag.

Thorus is the knight standing guard at the castle gate in the Old Camp. Keep selecting every available dialogue option about giving you a task or a job until the Out of Sight quest triggers. After progressing the quests in the Old Camp enough to unlock the “I’m ready for that job you mentioned” dialogue option from Thorus, you will be able to begin the Out of Sight quest.

If that dialogue option is not showing up yet, complete a few more Shadow quests in the Old Camp first — including talking to Diego and clearing some of the basic tasks around the camp. Step 2 — Find Mordrag

Mordrag is near the south exit of the Old Camp — head east of Thorus and keep following the path. Mordrag calls out to you the first time you approach him.

He is sitting on a bench near the marketplace area with the hanging cloth, close to NPCs like Fisk and Dexter. Once you get close he will speak to you automatically.

Step 3 — Choose the Escort Option

Telling Mordrag that you have a problem lets him leave peacefully and plan to head back to New Camp. You can ask Mordrag to take you to New Camp to mark it on your Colony map, starting Admission to the New Camp.

In the conversation with Mordrag, choose “You have a problem” or “Is it true you’re a courier for the water mages?” — either option will trigger him offering to take you along. Accept and the escort begins.

Important: Do not kill or fight Mordrag before you reach the New Camp. Killing or knocking out Mordrag forfeits the ring. You need that ring to hand to Lares when you arrive.

Step 4 — Follow Mordrag to the New Camp

Several enemies can appear along the route, but Mordrag is more than capable of handling most of them on his own. Even so, it is worth keeping an eye on his health and helping out when possible to ensure he makes it safely to the destination.

Stay close to Mordrag and let him lead. Do not run ahead. If you fall behind or get separated during a fight, keep heading west and uphill — you will eventually find the path. Along the route you will pass Cavalorn’s hut and see a wooden bridge, which means you are close.

Step 5 — Arrive at the New Camp

At the entrance of New Camp, Mordrag gives you Mordrag’s Ring and tells you to speak to Lares with it. You also get 200 experience as part of the journey.

Take the ring and head inside. Once you arrive at the location in the hills on the west side of The Colony, head up the hill and go past a bridge until you find a cave on your left. Head inside it to reach Lares’ home.

What Happens When You Return to the Old Camp?

If you return to the Old Camp right away, two men guarding the bridge on the way back stop you. They ask for 10 Ore Nuggets as a bribe. You can pay it, run away, or fight them.

After reporting back, Thorus gives you his vote and 250 experience. You can also use Mordrag’s old residence for yourself, giving you a place to sleep and store your belongings.

Method Two: Walk to the New Camp Solo

If you have not unlocked the Out of Sight quest yet and just want to get there, you can make the trip on foot without an escort. The route is straightforward once you know the turns. Here is how to reach the New Camp without Mordrag’s assistance:

Stand facing the main entrance of the Old Camp and leave through the gate.
Head toward the bridge and cross it.
Continue straight ahead, ignoring the Molerats, Wolves, and other creatures roaming nearby. Stay on the main path and continue past the cave.
After exiting the cave, you will reach the first split in the road. Take the path on the right.
Shortly afterward, the path will split again. Turn left at this junction.
Continue following the trail as it winds uphill. When you reach a wooden bridge, you are heading in the right direction and are getting close to the New Camp.
Cross the bridge and continue along the path. At the end of the route, look to the right and you will find two guards standing near the entrance to the New Camp.

The solo route is doable, but risky at low level. Wolves especially can catch you off guard on the uphill section. Try to run past enemies rather than fight them if your combat skills are not strong yet. What to Do Once You Arrive at the New Camp

Once you are inside, do not just head straight to Lares. Take a moment to explore first.

Find Lares — hand over Mordrag’s ring to start the Admission to the New Camp quest. His home is up the hill, past a bridge, in a cave on the left.
Talk to Cronos — the Water Mage trainer at the back of the main cave. He sells scrolls and runes and can raise your mana. Useful even if you are not planning to join the New Camp.
Find Baal Kagan — he is near the entrance to the main settlement cave and has early quests available that reward Ore and items.
Explore the rice fields — the New Camp runs on rice farming, and several NPCs here have quests tied to trade and resources that reward well.

Should You Kill Mordrag?

This comes up a lot. To maximize loot and EXP gain, you can kill Mordrag after reaching the New Camp to obtain Mordrag’s Ring and an additional 200 EXP. Keep in mind that while choosing to kill Mordrag has more rewards, it is more difficult, as the guards will help Mordrag and become hostile towards you.

Our strong recommendation: do not do it on your first playthrough, especially at low level. The guards make the fight very hard, and you only gain a ring and a bit of XP. The safer play is to let him live, take his ring to Lares, and come back stronger later if you want to settle the score.
