The chest is part of the A Ring for Fingers quest, which is a required step on the path to joining the Old Camp as a Shadow. What Is the A Ring for Fingers Quest?
To join the Old Camp faction in Gothic 1 Remake, players need to complete a series of quests, including A Ring for Fingers, which involves stealing a ring from Scatty’s Chest.
The quest is mandatory if you’re seeking admission into the Old Camp through the Shadow path. Visit Fingers near the arena in the Old Camp and ask for his support in becoming a Shadow. Fingers will request that you steal Scatty’s Ring. The ring is located inside Scatty’s chest.
Fingers is located on the western road from Thorus — go down the slope from the castle gate and take the first right. You will find him standing in front of his hut. Talk to him, exhaust the dialogue about becoming a Shadow, and the quest will trigger.

Should You Pay Jackal First?
Before sneaking into Scatty’s hut, you should speak with Jackal. Pay him 10 Ore Nuggets for protection. While this doesn’t make stealing legal, it can prevent some unnecessary problems if things go wrong inside the camp.
It is optional, but worth doing if you have the Ore to spare. The good news is that the chest also has 16 Ore Nuggets inside, so if you already paid Jackal 10 Ore Nuggets earlier in the quest, you can obtain more than that amount back from the chest, making it a good stop while completing the quest.

Where to Find Scatty’s Chest
Scatty’s chest can be found inside his hut in the Old Camp, located next to Fingers, just up the road from the arena entrance.
More specifically: go to the Arena District and look around the place where the Gladiators train. Pay attention to the house at the top of the hill, the one with the post board and the skull at the entrance.
Once you accept the quest from Fingers, turn around from him, walk a few steps forward, and turn right. Scatty’s hut is immediately to the left of Fingers’ own hut. The chest is at the back of the room as soon as you walk in — you cannot miss it.
Best Time to Break In
Make sure to only attempt lockpicking Scatty’s Chest during mornings when Scatty leaves his hut to go to the arena. This ensures that you have enough time to unlock the chest without being caught by anyone.

How Lockpicking Works in Gothic 1 Remake
Before you look at the solution, it helps to understand what you are doing. For most lockpicking mini-games, you get a set of 5 or 6 lockpicking plates depending on the chest. Within each lock is a brass pin. Your goal is to move the lock plates around so that the brass pin is in the central hole of each plate. You get a limited number of tries before the lockpick breaks. At 0 lockpick level, you get 4 tries, but at advanced levels, you will get more tries. Also, some of the lockpicking plates will move together if you move one of them.
That last point is important. Moving one plate can shift a linked plate at the same time, which is why the order matters so much. One wrong move can push a pin against the edge and block you.

Scatty’s Chest Lockpick Solution (Exact Steps)
Scatty’s chest uses a 5-plate lock. Follow the steps below in exact order. Do not skip or reverse any step or you will need to start over.
- Move Plate 5 left — 1 time
- Move Plate 3 right — 5 times
- Move Plate 5 left — 2 times
- Move Plate 2 right — 2 times
- Move Plate 5 left — 6 times
- Move Plate 4 left — 6 times
- Move Plate 5 left — 6 times
- Move Plate 3 left — 2 times
- Move Plate 5 left — 2 times
- Move Plate 2 right — 2 times
- Move Plate 5 right — 2 times
- Move Plate 4 right — 1 time
- Move Plate 1 right — 2 times
After step 13 the chest will open. Take your time with each step — there is no timer. The only pressure is the limited number of attempts before your lockpick breaks.
Note: This solution is for bare hands lockpicking without any Lockpicking skill points invested. If you have already bought the Lockpicking skill from Fingers, the pin positions may differ slightly. The sequence above covers the base case most players will encounter.
What Is Inside Scatty’s Chest?
Upon unlocking the chest, players can loot Scatty’s Ring, along with various other items. Scatty’s Ring can only be obtained from this specific chest during the A Ring for Fingers quest.
Here is the full loot breakdown:
- Scatty’s Ring — the quest item you need to bring back to Fingers. This is the only place to get it, and only during this quest.
- Pickaxe — a Two-Handed Axe that requires 5 Strength to be used. Useful if you are planning to mine Ore in the Old Mine.
- 16 Ore Nuggets — a solid return on the Ore you may have spent paying Jackal for protection.

What Happens After You Steal the Ring?
Once you have the ring, go back to Fingers and hand it over. He will be impressed and agree to vouch for you. This gives you his vote, which counts toward the total number of supporters you need to be accepted into the Old Camp as a Shadow.
