Before sneaking into Scatty’s hut, you should speak with Jackal. Pay him 10 Ore Nuggets for protection. While this doesn’t make stealing legal, it can prevent some unnecessary problems if things go wrong inside the camp.

It is optional, but worth doing if you have the Ore to spare. The good news is that the chest also has 16 Ore Nuggets inside, so if you already paid Jackal 10 Ore Nuggets earlier in the quest, you can obtain more than that amount back from the chest, making it a good stop while completing the quest.

Where to Find Scatty’s Chest

Scatty’s chest can be found inside his hut in the Old Camp, located next to Fingers, just up the road from the arena entrance.

More specifically: go to the Arena District and look around the place where the Gladiators train. Pay attention to the house at the top of the hill, the one with the post board and the skull at the entrance.

Once you accept the quest from Fingers, turn around from him, walk a few steps forward, and turn right. Scatty’s hut is immediately to the left of Fingers’ own hut. The chest is at the back of the room as soon as you walk in — you cannot miss it.

Best Time to Break In

How Lockpicking Works in Gothic 1 Remake

Before you look at the solution, it helps to understand what you are doing. For most lockpicking mini-games, you get a set of 5 or 6 lockpicking plates depending on the chest. Within each lock is a brass pin. Your goal is to move the lock plates around so that the brass pin is in the central hole of each plate. You get a limited number of tries before the lockpick breaks. At 0 lockpick level, you get 4 tries, but at advanced levels, you will get more tries. Also, some of the lockpicking plates will move together if you move one of them.

That last point is important. Moving one plate can shift a linked plate at the same time, which is why the order matters so much. One wrong move can push a pin against the edge and block you.

Scatty’s chest uses a 5-plate lock. Follow the steps below in exact order. Do not skip or reverse any step or you will need to start over.

  1. Move Plate 5 left — 1 time
  2. Move Plate 3 right — 5 times
  3. Move Plate 5 left — 2 times
  4. Move Plate 2 right — 2 times
  5. Move Plate 5 left — 6 times
  6. Move Plate 4 left — 6 times
  7. Move Plate 5 left — 6 times
  8. Move Plate 3 left — 2 times
  9. Move Plate 5 left — 2 times
  10. Move Plate 2 right — 2 times
  11. Move Plate 5 right — 2 times
  12. Move Plate 4 right — 1 time
