TL;DR
- Fuel comes from the Gas Station in East Raccoon City — but you can’t go there right away
- You need to unlock the Underground Parking Garage area first
- Shoot down a ladder on the east side of the Gas Station to get inside
- Pick up the empty Gas Can, survive the zombie ambush, then fill it at the fuel tanker out back
- One refill is enough for all 3 generators — you won’t need to come back
- Powering all generators opens shortcuts, story-required gates, and new areas
If you found a generator early on and had nothing to fill it with, don’t worry. That’s completely normal. The fuel is locked behind a section of the map you haven’t reached yet. Here’s exactly where to go, what to do, and where to use the fuel once you have it.
When Can You Get Fuel in RE9?
You can’t grab the fuel right away. The Gas Station is in an area of East Raccoon City that’s blocked off until you make some story progress first.
Here’s what needs to happen before you can access it:
- Defeat the giant spider boss
- Reach the BSAA Central Camp
- Get the Cedarbrook Apartments Key from the Logistics Warehouse
- Head into the Underground Parking Garage and find the two batteries
- Slot the batteries into the fuse box to power the flooded gate
- Exit back onto the street
Once you’re out on the street, the Gas Station is right there to the north. You’re also about to get the BSAA Container Key at this point — check our BSAA Container Key guide for everything inside those blue crates.
How to Get Into the Gas Station
The front gate of the Gas Station is locked. Don’t try forcing it.

Instead, look to the east side of the entrance. You’ll see a folded-up ladder with a yellow strap holding it in place. Shoot the strap to drop the ladder down. Climb up and walk across the scaffolding and car wreckage. This takes you over the wall and drops you down inside the Gas Station.
Once inside, stealth-kill the zombie wandering near the pumps to save ammo. Then head through the interior building and out the back door. You’ll find the empty Gas Can sitting on some crates near the south fence line.

Survive the Zombie Ambush
As soon as you pick up the Gas Can and head back to the forecourt, a horde of zombies will swarm the station. Some of them are carrying chainsaws. One will throw a flaming barrel, which can set the area on fire.
Take your time and back away. Use the environment to your advantage — explosive barrels, corners, and doorways can help control the crowd. Don’t rush this fight.
Once all the zombies are down, you’re clear to fill up.

How to Fill the Gas Can
Head to the north end of the Gas Station where you’ll find a large fuel tanker with a turnable wheel and a nozzle.
- Interact with the wheel to turn it on
- Interact with the nozzle to place the Gas Can
- You now have the Gas Can with Fuel
One refill is all you need. The gas can holds enough fuel for every generator in East Raccoon City, so you won’t have to come back here.
All Generator Locations in East Raccoon City
There are 3 generators you can power up with the Gas Can. Here’s where each one is and what it does.
Generator 1 — Gas Station Exit
Location: Right near where you found the empty Gas Can, inside the Gas Station.
Fill this one first. It powers a gate that lets you exit the Gas Station normally, without having to climb back over the rooftop. This makes backtracking through the area much faster. You’ll need this to get back out onto the street.
Generator 2 — Bridge Near the Crater
Location: Back near the large road crater in East Raccoon City, close to the ladder you first climbed to get up here.
Powering this generator lowers a bridge across the crater. This creates a direct shortcut to the BSAA Central Camp. It’s not required for story progress, but it saves a lot of running back and forth. Power this one early — it makes everything else much easier.
Generator 3 — Logistics Warehouse Roof
Location: On the rooftop of the Logistics Warehouse, near the antenna and close to where you found the Distributor earlier.
This is the most important one for story progress. Filling this generator and pressing the red button opens a gate and activates a zipline that takes you across to Willis Tower. You’ll need to complete Willis Tower to grab the final detonator part.
Before you take that zipline, make sure you’re stocked on ammo and healing items. Willis Tower is rough.

What Happens to the Gas Can After?
Once you’ve powered all the mandatory generators, the Gas Can disappears from your inventory automatically. There’s nothing more you need to do with it.
Quick Tips
- Shoot the yellow strap to drop the ladder — don’t waste time looking for another way in
- Stealth-kill the first zombie inside the Gas Station to save bullets for the ambush
- Use explosive barrels during the zombie horde fight at the forecourt
- Power the bridge generator (Generator 2) first — it speeds up everything else
- Don’t go to Willis Tower unprepared — it’s one of the harder sections in the chapter
