How to Get Mounted Kills in COD Modern Warfare 4

    TL;DR

    • Mounted kills are required for several Special Camo challenges in MW4 — specifically the “Smoke” camo and others, unlocked at Weapon Level 25.
    • To mount your weapon, stand near a valid surface and use the Weapon Mount input (ADS + Melee by default).
    • Equipping the Bipod attachment (Underbarrel slot) lets you mount anywhere by going prone — no surface required.
    • DMZ is the easiest place to farm mounted kills since AI enemies count, and the target is 75 kills vs 20 in Multiplayer.
    • In Multiplayer, stick to slower-paced modes and defensive map positions to rack up kills while staying mounted.

Mounted kills in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 are one of those challenges that feel straightforward on paper but can slow your camo grind right down if you don’t know the fastest method. This guide breaks down exactly how to do it — including the one attachment that makes the whole thing much easier.

What Are Mounted Kills in Modern Warfare 4?

A mounted kill is any elimination you get while your weapon is actively mounted to a surface or the ground. Mounting stabilizes your weapon against a wall, ledge, or object, reducing recoil and giving you a more controlled firing position.

This mechanic has been in Call of Duty for a few years now, but in MW4 it plays a key role in the camo grind. Several Special Camo challenges across multiple weapons specifically require kills while mounted, making it one of the more common objectives you’ll need to complete on your way to Gold and beyond.

Why You Need Mounted Kills in MW4

The main reason most players are hunting mounted kills is the Special Camo system. Every weapon in MW4 has three unique Special Camo challenges, unlocked once you reach the required weapon level. The “Smoke” camo challenge — unlocked at Weapon Level 25 — requires you to get kills while the weapon is mounted.

Here’s the kill count you need:

    • Multiplayer: 20 mounted kills per weapon
    • DMZ: 75 mounted kills per weapon

Multiple weapon categories have mounted kill camos — including several assault rifles, SMGs, LMGs, and battle rifles. If you’re going for a full camo completion across every gun, expect to be doing this challenge a lot. Check the full MW4 camo challenges guide to plan ahead.

How to Mount Your Weapon in Modern Warfare 4

Every weapon in MW4 can be mounted by default. You don’t need a special perk or attachment to do it — but the surface you’re near has to be compatible.

    Default Weapon Mount Controls

    • Controller: Aim Down Sights (ADS) near a valid surface, then press the Melee button. Your weapon will snap to the mount position.
    • Keyboard and Mouse: ADS near a surface, then press your Melee key. You can also check and change this in Settings → Keyboard and Mouse → Weapon Mount.

Once mounted, your recoil is significantly reduced and your kill will register as a mounted kill as long as you stay in position when you fire. If you leave the mount before the kill registers, it won’t count.

What Surfaces Can You Mount On?

You can mount on most chest-height walls, ledges, window sills, sandbags, low barriers, and similar environmental cover. The game will give you a visual prompt when you’re close enough to a valid surface while aiming.

Not every wall or object is mountable. If you’re not getting the prompt, move slightly and try again — the angle and your position relative to the surface both matter.

The Best Way to Get Mounted Kills: Use the Bipod Attachment

This is the method that makes the challenge genuinely easy. The Bipod attachment (found in the Underbarrel slot in the Gunsmith) changes the rules for how you mount. Instead of needing a nearby surface, you can mount your weapon anywhere simply by going prone and using the mount input.

This is huge. It removes the biggest friction point of the challenge — finding a valid surface, positioning correctly, and hoping enemies walk into your sightline. With a Bipod equipped, you just go prone wherever you want and immediately start farming. You can mount in open fields, at the end of corridors, behind sandbags — basically anywhere.

The AA54 V.3 Bipod is unlocked at level 13 with the Finn LMG. Once you have it, it can be swapped across compatible weapons.

Mounted Kills in DMZ vs Multiplayer — Which Is Better?

Both modes work, but they play out very differently. Here’s what you need to know before choosing where to grind.

Farming Mounted Kills in DMZ (Recommended for Most Players)

DMZ is the more relaxed option for this challenge, and many players will find it easier overall despite the higher kill count (75 vs 20). Here’s why it works well:

    • AI enemies count toward mounted kill challenges in DMZ. You don’t need to out-position real players.
    • AI soldiers patrol predictable routes in locations like Hajin, making it easy to set up a mounted position and let enemies walk to you.
    • The Bipod + prone method works especially well in DMZ — find a patrol route, go prone with the Bipod equipped, and take down enemies as they come.
    • There’s less pressure and no time limit, so you can be methodical about your position.

Head to areas with high AI concentration. Set up near patrol paths, go prone with the Bipod, and clear enemies without breaking mount. Repeat until done. Check out our DMZ police station locations — these areas tend to have dense AI activity that’s good for farming kills.

    Farming Mounted Kills in Multiplayer

If you’d rather stay in Multiplayer, it’s doable — you just need the right approach. The key is finding natural mounting spots on maps that also see consistent enemy traffic from a predictable direction.

    • Play objective modes like Hardpoint or Domination. Enemies funnel into objective areas, giving you a reliable angle to cover while mounted.
    • Look for window sills, rooftop ledges, and wall gaps that overlook high-traffic lanes.
    • Don’t camp in one spot too long — players will adapt. Rotate between two or three mounting positions on the same map.
    • The Bipod + prone still works here in open areas — go prone behind a rock or raised terrain and you have a mounted position that isn’t dependent on a wall.

The 20-kill requirement in Multiplayer is lower, but landing kills while staying still in a live game is trickier. If you’re struggling, switch to DMZ — the AI grind is less stressful even if the numbers are higher.

Tips to Farm Mounted Kills Faster

    • Equip the Bipod first. This is the single biggest time saver. Don’t attempt this challenge without it if you can help it.
    • Use a weapon you’re already leveling. You’ll be doing this challenge at Weapon Level 25, so line it up with your normal weapon grind. The kills count toward your level too.
    • Activate a Double Weapon XP Token during your session. Mounted kills still give weapon XP, so pair this grind with a token to make dual progress. See our guide on how to get Double XP Tokens in MW4 to stock up first.
    • Don’t mount on obvious, exposed spots in Multiplayer. Pick angles where you have cover and a clear sightline — staying alive while mounted is the whole point.
    • In DMZ, focus high-enemy areas. Markets, military compounds, and police stations all have dense AI patrols that make mounted farming efficient. The DMZ boss locations area tends to have a lot of AI activity nearby as well.

Which Weapons Need Mounted Kills for Special Camos in MW4?

Mounted kill camos appear across a wide range of weapon types. Here are some of the confirmed weapons with mounted kill requirements for their Special Camos:

    • Several Assault Rifles — including challenges named Smoke, Night Ops, Urban Smoke, Ash Pine, Mangrove, and Backcountry depending on the specific weapon
    • Multiple LMGs — which are naturally suited for mounting given their weight and recoil profile
    • Some Battle Rifles and SMGs — including the MAR-9, which mounts well around doorways and corners

The Cronen Squall Battle Rifle, for example, benefits from mounting for long-range kills given its higher recoil. LMGs in general are the most naturally fun weapon class to use with a Bipod since the playstyle already suits a slow, controlled setup.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI kills count for mounted kills in MW4 DMZ?

Yes. In DMZ, kills on AI enemies count toward mounted kill camo challenges. This is what makes DMZ the preferred option for farming this challenge without the pressure of real opponents.

Can you get mounted kills anywhere with the Bipod in MW4?

Yes. With the Bipod attachment equipped in the Underbarrel slot, you can mount your weapon by going prone anywhere on the map — no wall or surface needed.

Do you need to stay mounted for the kill to count?

Yes. You must remain in the mounted position when the kill registers. If you break the mount before the enemy dies, it won’t count toward the challenge.

What weapon level unlocks the mounted kill camo challenge?

The Special Camo challenge requiring mounted kills (Smoke) is unlocked at Weapon Level 25.

Can you do mounted kills in Ground War?

Yes. Ground War’s larger maps have plenty of natural cover with valid mount points and longer engagement ranges, which suits a mounted playstyle well. Just expect less consistent enemy traffic compared to objective modes in core 6v6.
