What Is Frozen Highlands in Minecraft Dungeons 2?
Frozen Highlands is the seventh region in Minecraft Dungeons 2. It sits right before The Sift, making it the last Overworld stop in the main story. The area is a cold, icy stretch of land packed with Illager patrols, Soul Corrupted mobs, and two major structures — the Frozen Fortress and the Illager Fortress.
You arrive here during the mid-game at around level 26. The enemies here hit harder than anything before, so make sure your gear is up to date before entering. You can visit the Enchantsmith in the Frozen Highlands settlement before pushing further in.
Frozen Highlands — Key Locations
Frozen Fortress
The Frozen Fortress is the main dungeon inside Frozen Highlands. This is where the story quest Hiking Frozen Highlands takes you. The fortress is locked from the inside when you first arrive. You will need to find a lever to open the gates before you can push deeper.
The Frozen Fortress contains 2 chests and 25 enemy spawns. It also has its own merchant area with a Blacksmith, Enchantsmith, and Town Merchant — making it a good hub to gear up between runs.
The fortress is also where the Lucky Clover secret talisman is located, found near the Library Towers.
Illager Fortress
The Illager Fortress is the other major structure in Frozen Highlands. It is the source of most of the Illager patrols roaming the highlands. The side quest Illager Intelligence takes you into this fortress, where you fight the Sculk Monstrosity as the boss.
Cracking the Illager code inside the fortress is an optional objective tied to the game’s achievements, but it is separate from defeating the Prime Enchanter.
All Quests in Frozen Highlands
Main Quest — Hiking Frozen Highlands
This is Main Quest 10 of 15 in Minecraft Dungeons 2. The story sends you to the Frozen Highlands to help villagers who fled their homes after Illagers attacked. You search shipwrecks for materials, escort survivors to the fortress, and finally unlock the fortress gates to face the Prime Enchanter.
The quest has 31 objectives and includes two arena fights. The reward for completing it is the Mob Mallet at level 26. Finishing this quest also unlocks five side quests in the region.
For tips on navigating earlier areas, see our Rainy Plains guide and Deep Dark guide.
Side Quest — Gone Fishing
This quest is given by the Fisher in the Frozen Highlands. Completing it rewards you with the Looter’s Charm talisman at level 26. The Looter’s Charm increases the chance that defeated enemies drop loot, which makes it very useful for farming. This unlocks after completing Hiking Frozen Highlands.
Side Quest — Illager Intelligence
This quest takes you into the Illager Fortress. The boss here is the Sculk Monstrosity. The reward is the Soul Blast ability at level 26. This is also the quest that ties into the optional Illager code challenge in the highlands.
Side Quest — The Fight at the End of the Tunnel
Given by a Miner in the Frozen Highlands. The reward is a Pickaxe at level 26. A shorter quest with no named boss, but worth doing for the loot and XP.
Side Quest — The Prime Enchanter Revived
This is the repeat boss fight quest, located in the Frozen Fortress. The Prime Enchanter comes back as the boss, and the reward this time is the Amethyst Lens at level 26. This is one of the best quests to farm repeatedly for Gauntlets and the Prime Enchanter’s Gauntlets Unique.

Side Quest — The Freezing Golem
Another side quest unlocked in Frozen Highlands. No named boss but gives good rewards and XP.
Enemies in Frozen Highlands
The Frozen Highlands mixes standard Illager units with Soul Corrupted versions and some hostile wildlife. Here is what you will find in this region:
- Pillager — standard ranged Illager patrol unit
- Vindicator — fast axe-wielding melee enemy
- Royal Guard — tough Illager fighter, common in fortress areas
- Enchanter — buffs nearby enemies; kill these first
- Geomancer — places ground hazards
- Husk — slow but tanky zombie type
- Stray — ranged skeleton that fires slowing arrows
- Skeleton — basic ranged mob
- Creeper and Charged Creeper — explosive enemies
- Ravager — appears from threat level 3 onward; very high health
- Warden — appears later in the fortress sections
- Goat — neutral mob; only attacks if you provoke it
- Soul Corrupted variants — Spider, Zombie, Slime, Baby Zombie, Skeleton, Vanguard
Enchanters are your top priority in every group fight. If you leave them alive, they will buff everything around them and make every fight much harder.
See our Howling Woods guide for comparison on earlier region difficulty.

The Prime Enchanter Boss Guide
The Prime Enchanter is the story boss of Frozen Highlands. You fight it inside the Frozen Fortress during the Hiking Frozen Highlands quest. It is also a member of the Illager High Council.
Prime Enchanter Stats
- Health: 1,500
- Poise: 700
- Resistances: 50% Lightning resistance, 20% Ranged resistance
- Immune to: Chained, Vined, Webbed
- Status it applies: Frozen
Prime Enchanter Attacks
- Blink Attack — teleports in close to hit you; dodge sideways when you see it
- Charged Rush — charges forward and leaves ice explosions on the ground along its path
- Area Attack / Frost Icemines — places hazards on the ground that deal melee and frost damage and apply the Frozen status
- Summons — periodically calls in Pillagers, Royal Guards, and Vindicators to fight alongside it
How to Beat The Prime Enchanter
Do not use a Lightning build. The boss takes only half damage from Lightning. Ranged damage is also reduced by 20%, so a pure bow build will underperform here. Melee is the most reliable damage type for this fight.
Keep moving at all times. The Icemines on the ground will freeze you in place if you stand still, and a frozen player is an easy target for the follow-up rush attack.
Attack from the side or rear when possible. When the boss telegraphs an attack, dodge-roll away and then get in your hits while it recovers.
When the boss summons Illagers, clear them quickly. Do not let them surround you. A few hits from summons plus boss attacks at the same time can end a run fast.
Save your healing potion for the dangerous moments. The Prime Enchanter can keep pressure on you long enough that using your heal too early leaves you without it when the fight gets critical.
Beating the Prime Enchanter earns you the Past Their Prime achievement.

- Minecart Stations near chests are worth bookmarking. You can fast travel back to them for quick loot runs between sessions.
- For PC players, make sure your setup can handle the zone smoothly. See our PC requirements guide and best settings guide.
