You need to reach the Swamp Camp first. If you have not been there yet, the safest early-game route is to use Baal Parvez as an escort. Baal Parvez preaches near the south gate market area of the Old Camp. Tell him you want to join the Brotherhood and ask him to take you there. Once you arrive at the Swamp Camp, find Baal Tondral. He preaches to Novices near the blacksmith area in the southeast corner of the camp. Walk up to him after he finishes talking and select the dialogue option: “How can I prove myself to you?” He asks you to bring someone from the Old Camp into the Brotherhood. That starts the quest.
Speak to Melvin Before You Leave the Swamp Camp
Do not leave immediately. Melvin sits near Baal Tondral among the Novices. He used to be a digger himself, which makes him easy to spot in the group. Talk to him and ask if he used to be a digger. Keep the conversation going until he mentions his old friend Dusty, still working at the Old Camp, and suggests him as a recruit candidate.
This step matters. Without it, your quest log does not update with Dusty as the target, and you may waste time at the Old Camp without knowing who you are looking for.
Where to Find Dusty in the Old Camp
Dusty is in the Old Camp marketplace near the south gate. He stands in the area where Baal Parvez delivers his sermon. The timing matters — Dusty is most reliably found in the evening when the sermon is happening. If he is not there during the day, wait or sleep until evening. Approach Dusty and start a conversation. Tell him about the Swamp Camp and that Melvin is living well there. Mention Melvin specifically — that is what tips the scales. Dusty agrees to come with you. The problem is the guards.
How to Get Dusty Out of the Old Camp — South Gate Bribe
Dusty cannot walk out on his own. The guards will not let him leave unless you pay them off. You need 100 Ore Nuggets to bribe the guard at the south gate. When you reach the south gate guard, pay the bribe. The quest clears that step and Dusty is allowed through.
What Not to Say at the South Gate
This is the part most players get wrong. Do not tell the guard that Dusty is going to the Swamp Camp. The guard will refuse and the escort fails. Keep your dialogue vague. Just pay the 100 nuggets without explaining where Dusty is headed.
Also: use only the south gate. The north gate will fail the quest. The quest log even flags this — Dusty must leave through the south gate specifically.
How to Escort Dusty to the Swamp Camp
Once Dusty is through the gate, walk him back to the Swamp Camp. The route from the Old Camp to the Swamp Camp passes through open terrain with animals and hostile creatures. Stay alert. Dusty is not a fighter and can be killed on the road if you are not careful.

Ask Baal Tondral for his blessing. The quest ends there.

The 500 XP is the best reward among the early Swamp Camp quests. Skipping this quest makes that admission harder to unlock.

- Have 100 Ore Nuggets before you go back to the Old Camp for Dusty — you cannot finish without them.
- Talk to Melvin at the Swamp Camp first, or your quest log will not point you to Dusty.
- Find Dusty in the evening near Baal Parvez’s sermon spot by the south gate market area.
- South gate only. North gate fails the escort.
- Do not explain to the guard where Dusty is going — just pay and walk through.
- Dusty can die on the escort. Keep enemies away from him on the road back.
