Read the Memory on the Blood Coronation — Crimson Desert Guide

Read the Memory on the Blood Coronation in Crimson Desert — find the Duke's office on the second floor, stay in Visione mode, follow the ghosts, and examine all three nobles.

The Blood Coronation is the 116th main quest in Crimson Desert and the quest that gives Chapter 8 its name. Most players breeze through the castle infiltration only to get stuck on one objective: Read the Memory on the Blood Coronation. The memory mechanic works differently here than in other quests, and if you exit Visione mode too early the sequence breaks and nothing progresses. This guide walks you through every step — finding the office, triggering the memory correctly, watching the three noble conversations, and what to do when Gabriel Caliburn attacks.

TL;DR

  • This quest is in Chapter 8: Blood Coronation, sub-chapter To Demeniss. It follows The Cursed Knight.
  • Travel to Demeniss Castle (the Great Palace in the centre of Demeniss capital). All guards are hostile — kill them or push through. No reputation penalty.
  • Go to the second floor and find the large banquet hall-style room — this is the Duke’s old office.
  • Aim your lantern (L1/LB) at the master table by the door until “Learning in Progress” completes.
  • Equip the Visione helmet and enter Memory Fragment mode. Do NOT press Circle/B to exit — stay in Visione the entire time.
  • Follow the blue ghost figures downstairs to the audience chamber.
  • Examine three groups of nobles on your map to learn: Duke Caliburn’s Downfall, General Bastier’s Wrongdoings, and The Vanished Countess Azerian.
  • A cutscene triggers. Gabriel Caliburn attacks — you are scripted to lose this fight. Do not waste healing items trying to win.
  • After the forced loss, control shifts to Damiane for the rest of Chapter 8.

Quest Context — Where The Blood Coronation Fits

The Blood Coronation quest is the ninth mission in the To Demeniss sub-chapter of Chapter 8. The chapter spans three sub-chapters: Ashen Steps, To Demeniss, and Traitor. By the time you reach this quest you have already completed the manor infiltrations (Whispering Shadows, Blazing Fire, Bloodied Invitation), the battlefield siege, and the Cursed Knight boss fight. This quest is the payoff — the investigation into what actually happened in Demeniss Castle and where Myurdin is now.

The quest objective from the journal: “Investigate Duke Caliburn’s old office to find out Myurdin’s whereabouts.” You received a tip that Myurdin is in Demeniss and working with the Caliburns. The old office holds the evidence.

Step 1 — Get to Demeniss Capital

Fast travel to the nearest Abyss Nexus to Demeniss City. The Great Palace is in the centre of the capital — it is the large fortified structure south of the city proper.

All guards inside the palace grounds are hostile on sight. You do not need to be stealthy here — unlike the earlier manor infiltration quests (Whispering Shadows and Blazing Fire), The Blood Coronation does not require stealth. Fight through or run past the guards. Their grapple attacks are dangerous — if they grapple you, Kliff gets thrown and can respawn on the rooftops in an awkward position. Stay mobile and do not let them grab you.

The key tip: enemies in this section will “pass out” instead of die — do not be confused if downed guards are still breathing. It is intentional and does not affect your progress.

Step 2 — Find the Old Office (Second Floor, Banquet Hall)

Enter the main hall of the palace and head to the second floor. The objective marker points here but the room itself confuses players — it looks like a banquet hall, not an office. This is intentional. The Duke’s “office” was his formal dining and meeting room in the upper castle.

Look for the largest ornate room on the second floor. Your lantern will begin to glow blue when you enter the correct area — this is your confirmation that a memory fragment is nearby. If your lantern is not glowing and you cannot find the room, use the left section of the mansion and work your way upstairs on the left staircase specifically.

Once in the correct room, watch for the blue ghost figures — faint spectral outlines of the past event. These are the visual cue that you are in the right place.

Step 3 — Read the Memory on the Blood Coronation

This is the step that causes most players to get stuck. Follow these steps precisely:

How to Trigger the Memory

  • Stand near the master table by the door in the banquet room.
  • Hold up your lantern (L1 on PS / LB on Xbox) and aim it at the table.
  • On PC: use Ctrl + Left Mouse Button (Binding Light skill) to reveal the memory.
  • Wait for the “Learning in Progress” message to complete on screen. Do not move away while it is running.
  • Once it completes, the memory fragment is locked and ready to read.

How to Equip the Visione and Enter Memory Mode

  • Open your Weapon Wheel (Left D-Pad on controller).
  • Press R1/RB to reach the Armor section of the wheel.
  • Select the Visione helmet to equip it.
  • Alternatively, equip it directly from your inventory under the Helmet slot.
  • Once the Visione is equipped, press the Options button (PS) / Menu button (Xbox) and select Memory Fragment on the right side to enter the memory.

The screen shifts to the blue holographic memory realm showing past events as ghostly figures. You can now see what happened in this room years ago.

The Most Important Rule — Do NOT Exit Visione Mode

This is the #1 reason players get stuck and think the quest is glitched. Once you enter Visione memory mode, do not press Circle (PS) / B (Xbox) to exit it. Pressing that button cancels the memory sequence. Nothing will progress and the quest objective remains incomplete even though you technically triggered the memory.

Stay in Visione mode the entire time. Follow the ghost figures and do not exit until the sequence completes on its own.

Step 4 — Follow the Ghosts to the Audience Chamber

Inside the Visione memory, you will see blue ghost figures of nobles and soldiers moving through the castle as they did during the historical Blood Coronation event. Follow them.

The ghosts move downstairs from the office toward the large audience chamber on the ground floor. Stay with them. Keep the Visione equipped and follow the group until they gather in the audience chamber and the memory scene begins to play out.

The audience chamber is a large, open throne room area. Many ghostly nobles are assembled there. This is where the massacre happened.

Step 5 — Examine Three Noble Groups

In the audience chamber, your map shows three marked groups of nobles. You must examine each one to collect the intelligence Kliff needs. Each group gives a different piece of knowledge:

Noble Group 1 — Duke Caliburn’s Downfall

Head to the first noble marked on your map. Press Square (PS) / X (Xbox) to examine them. You learn the knowledge entry “Duke Caliburn’s Downfall” — details about what happened to the Duke during the Blood Coronation event.

Noble Group 2 — General Bastier’s Wrongdoings

A short walk from the first group. Press Square / X to examine. You learn “General Bastier’s Wrongdoings” — this connects to Lucian Bastier, the boss you fought in this chapter. If you have not yet done that fight and collected the Mysterious Gift from him, see our Mysterious Gift guide for what that reward is used for.

Noble Group 3 — The Vanished Countess Azerian

The third group is in the southwest corner of the audience chamber, to the right of the throne. Examine them to learn “The Vanished Countess Azerian” — important backstory for the House Byron questline in Demeniss.

After the third noble group is examined, a cutscene triggers automatically. You do not need to press anything — the scene begins on its own.

Step 6 — Gabriel Caliburn Boss Fight (You Are Scripted to Lose)

The cutscene reveals Duke Caliburn arriving with guards and massacring every noble in the chamber. He possesses the same dark power you encountered earlier in the Abyss during the Obsession and Madness quest. He pulls Kliff directly into the memory realm and you are forced into a fight.

Critical information: You cannot win this fight. It is scripted. Gabriel Caliburn is stronger than Kliff at this point in the story and throws him aside as he makes his way to the throne and places the crown on his head. The game intends for you to lose.

Do not use your healing food trying to win. Every Grilled Meat, Refined Palmar Pill, or Haiden’s Elixir you spend here is wasted. Let Gabriel defeat you. The story continues regardless. If you want to know what Caliburn can do in combat to understand the moveset for later in the chapter, observe without committing resources:

  • He performs fast strikes from random directions.
  • He can teleport across the arena.
  • He uses slash combos, special attacks, and arrow attacks.
  • Focus on dodging if you want to see his patterns. Do not try to stagger him.

After Gabriel defeats Kliff, the two Shai sister witches who were with you earlier arrive and teleport Kliff out of the castle to treat his wounds.

What Happens After — Damiane Takes Over

As Kliff is being healed with the help of witches, control shifts to Damiane for the remainder of Chapter 8 (the Traitor sub-chapter). Damiane has a different playstyle from Kliff — this is the moment to get familiar with her if you have not played her before.

As Damiane, your goal is to infiltrate Demeniss Court. Head to the marked objective. When you reach the courtyard, enter from the right side behind the counter where you will find a trap door leading to the underground prison. Go downstairs to the last cell on the right side to advance the story.

Kliff returns as the playable character in subsequent chapters after Chapter 8 concludes.

How to Replay the Memory (If You Already Saw It)

If you already triggered the memory but accidentally exited Visione mode before following the ghosts all the way to the audience chamber, you can replay it:

  • Open the Weapon Wheel (Left D-Pad) and press R1/RB to reach Armor.
  • Equip the Visione helmet.
  • Open the Visione Memories menu.
  • Select Demeniss, then The Blood Coronation under Recollections.
  • The memory restarts from the beginning. This time, do not exit Visione mode until the sequence ends naturally.

Tips for The Blood Coronation Quest

  • The office looks like a banquet hall — that is correct. Do not waste time searching for a traditional office room. The large formal dining room on the second floor is the objective.
  • Watch for your lantern to glow blue. This is always your signal that a memory fragment is nearby. If it is not glowing, you are not in the right spot yet.
  • Stay in Visione mode the entire time. Pressing Circle/B exits the mode and breaks the sequence. This is the single most common cause of the quest appearing to be glitched.
  • Do not spend healing on Gabriel Caliburn. The fight is scripted — you lose regardless of how much damage you deal or how well you dodge.
  • Guards have grapple attacks — dodge aggressively. Being grappled can throw Kliff to the rooftops, which is disorienting. Stay mobile and prioritise avoiding grabs over dealing damage.
  • Stock up before the next section. The Rebel Suppression quest and the Cursed Knight fight earlier in Chapter 8 are long combat sequences. If you are reading this before those quests, make sure you have 50+ Grilled Meat in your inventory. See our best healing food guide.
  • The Forgotten General boss in Chapter 8 drops the second Mysterious Gift in the game. If you have not defeated him yet, the General’s Tomb is northwest of Pailune — see our Mysterious Gift guide for where to use it and why Haldwin is the best target.
