The Mysterious Gift is one of the most confusing items in Crimson Desert. It lands in your inventory after a boss fight with no explanation and cannot be opened like a chest or used like a consumable. Players assume it is a reward for them — it is not. The Mysterious Gift is given to an NPC as a gift, and it instantly grants +100 Trust with whoever receives it. There are only two in the entire game, both locked behind tough boss fights, so where you spend each one matters enormously. This guide covers how to get them, how to use them, and which NPCs give the best return.
TL;DR
- The Mysterious Gift is a gifting item — you give it to an NPC to instantly gain +100 Trust with them.
- There are only two in the game — one from each boss below. Do not sell or discard them.
- Source 1: Defeat Lucian Bastier in Chapter 8 of the main story.
- Source 2: Defeat the Forgotten General in the General’s Tomb, northwest of Pailune.
- Best use: Give both to Haldwin at the Hernand Contribution Shop — he rewards you with the Decorative Dragon Head Stirrups, the best horse stirrups in the game (+1 Health per second for your horse).
- The Mysterious Gift works on any NPC — but most vendors can have their Trust built up through regular gifting. Haldwin’s stirrups are locked behind Trust and cannot be obtained any other way without heavy grinding.
- Check a vendor’s stock before gifting — since Patch 1.04 you can preview NPC inventory. Make sure the unlock is worth it.
What Is the Mysterious Gift
The Mysterious Gift is described in-game as: “A one-of-a-kind relic cherished by the forgotten for ages. Perhaps it is the intense longing to be remembered that dwells within that makes it such an unforgettable gift, so much so that the recipient may never forget the giver.”
It is classified as a Treasure item in your inventory and has a sell price of just 1 Silver — a deliberate signal not to sell it. It cannot be opened, consumed, or equipped. Its only function is to be given to an NPC through the gift menu. When you give it to any NPC, they receive +100 Trust instantly, regardless of their normal preferred gift type. Most NPCs require specific materials, gems, or books to build Trust over multiple sessions — the Mysterious Gift skips all of that in one interaction.
Because there are only two in the entire game and both require defeating difficult bosses, spending them carelessly is a waste. Some NPCs can have their Trust maxed through patient gifting with cheap items. Others are locked behind items so rare or expensive that using a Mysterious Gift becomes the efficient choice. The Trust system across all vendors is covered in our how to gain Trust with merchants guide.

How to Get the Mysterious Gift — Both Sources
Source 1 — Defeat Lucian Bastier (Chapter 8)
The first Mysterious Gift drops from Lucian Bastier, a main story boss encountered in Chapter 8 of the campaign. This fight is part of the mandatory story progression and cannot be missed — you will face Lucian Bastier as part of Chapter 8’s main quest chain.
Lucian Bastier is a technically demanding fight with fast attack chains and strong punish windows. Go in with well-upgraded armor and a solid supply of healing food. For the full boss strategy, see our how to beat Lucian Bastier guide.
The Mysterious Gift is dropped as a guaranteed reward after Lucian Bastier is defeated. Check your inventory after the fight to confirm it landed there.
Source 2 — Defeat the Forgotten General (General’s Tomb, Northwest Pailune)
The second Mysterious Gift drops from the Forgotten General, a non-story boss found in the General’s Tomb in the northwest of Pailune. This is an optional boss fight — it is not part of the main story quest chain. You have to seek it out deliberately.
The General’s Tomb is in the upper-left section of the Pailune region on the map. Look for the tomb marker northwest of Pailune City. The Forgotten General is the tomb’s guardian boss. For the full boss fight guide, see our how to beat the Forgotten General guide.
Like Lucian Bastier, the Forgotten General drops the Mysterious Gift as a guaranteed reward. Make sure you have inventory space after the fight — it will not appear on the ground if your inventory is full.

How to Use the Mysterious Gift
Using the Mysterious Gift is not obvious because it works through the gifting system, not through a normal item use prompt. Here is exactly how to do it:
- Approach the NPC you want to gift it to and press the interact button.
- In the NPC’s dialogue menu, look for the Gift option and select it.
- Your gift inventory opens. Find the Mysterious Gift in the list — it appears under the Treasure or Misc category.
- Select it and confirm. The NPC receives the gift and their Trust jumps to +100 instantly.
- Their inventory and special stock updates immediately — check their shop to see what has unlocked.
If you are new to the gifting system in Crimson Desert, the gift option appears in NPC dialogue menus after your first Trust interaction with them. Since Patch 1.04, you can also preview an NPC’s full inventory before gifting — use this to check whether their locked stock is worth spending a Mysterious Gift on before committing.
Best NPC to Give the Mysterious Gift To
You have two Mysterious Gifts total and a large pool of NPCs to choose from. Most vendors can be brought to +100 Trust through regular gifting over time. A few have locked items valuable enough that using a Mysterious Gift is the best option. Here is the full picture:
Best Choice — Haldwin at the Hernand Contribution Shop
The single best use of a Mysterious Gift is giving it to Haldwin at the Hernand Contribution Shop in Hernand City. Haldwin is the Contribution vendor — the NPC who accepts Contribution Crowns for exclusive items. At +100 Trust, Haldwin gifts you the Decorative Dragon Head Stirrups, which are the best horse stirrups in the game.
The Decorative Dragon Head Stirrups give your horse +1 Health regeneration per second, which is an enormous passive benefit during long horse rides and horse combat situations. No other stirrups in the game provide this effect at this level. They are not available from any vendor or loot source — the only way to get them is through Haldwin’s Trust reward.
Building Haldwin’s Trust through normal gifting is slow and expensive — he requires Contribution Crowns and specific rare materials. Using a Mysterious Gift skips straight to the reward. If you are investing in your horse build, this is the clear choice for your first Mysterious Gift. See our how to use Contribution Crowns guide for more on Haldwin’s full inventory.
Second Best Choice — Late-Game Vendors Locked Behind Expensive Gifts
Your second Mysterious Gift is best saved for a vendor whose normal Trust items are genuinely expensive or hard to farm — specifically vendors who require:
- Gold Bars in large quantities — expensive even with farming. See our how to get Gold Bars guide.
- Diamonds — rare and needed for other progression. See our how to get Diamonds guide.
- Sunmore at Saddlewind Ranch — requires x10 Garnet or gems and sells the Riding Cloak, a key piece of the Full Riding Outfit Set. If you are working toward the full set, this is a strong second target. See our Full Riding Outfit Set guide for context.
The general rule: if an NPC’s preferred gifts are cheap and common (books, food items, basic ores), build their Trust manually. Save the Mysterious Gift for NPCs whose items are locked behind costly or time-consuming gifting requirements.
NPCs to Avoid Gifting
Do not give the Mysterious Gift to:
- Standard shop vendors with no exclusive stock — reaching +100 Trust with them just shows you items you can buy anyway.
- NPCs whose preferred gifts are cheap materials (Copper Ore, Iron Ore, basic herbs) — you can reach +100 Trust with them through a few minutes of gifting at no real cost.
- NPCs you have already gifted to near +100 Trust — almost there is close enough to finish manually. Do not spend a Mysterious Gift on the final 20 Trust when you could get there with two or three more item gifts.
Tips for Using the Mysterious Gift
- Do not sell or discard it. The sell price of 1 Silver is a game warning not to sell it. It has zero monetary value and everything NPC value.
- Preview NPC stock before gifting (Patch 1.04+). Open the NPC’s shop first and check whether their inventory has anything locked behind Trust. If nothing special appears to be gated, save the gift for someone else.
- Give the first one to Haldwin. The Decorative Dragon Head Stirrups are the clearest best-in-slot reward from any Trust unlock in the game. Haldwin is in Hernand Contribution Shop — easy to reach at any point in the story.
- Defeat the Forgotten General early. It is an optional boss but its Mysterious Gift is a free second Trust skip. The General’s Tomb is accessible before Chapter 8 if your combat level is high enough. Grabbing it early means you have both gifts available together and can plan their use strategically.
- Horse build players prioritise Haldwin and Sunmore. Stirrups from Haldwin and the Riding Cloak from Sunmore are both horse-stat items. If you are building toward the Full Riding Outfit Set, using both Mysterious Gifts on these two NPCs is a clean plan.
- The Trust system also applies to the Patrigio Secret Shop — a hidden merchant with rotating rare stock. See our Patrigio Secret Shop location guide for whether it is worth a Mysterious Gift investment.
- Still working through Chapter 8 where the first Mysterious Gift drops? Make sure your gear is ready for Lucian Bastier. Check our guides on best armor Abyss Gears and how to reinforce equipment to prepare. For earlier story progress, our Sturdy Tree Branch guide covers a useful passive stat upgrade available well before Chapter 8.
