Best Horse & Horse Gear in Crimson Desert

Best horse and horse gear in Crimson Desert — top legendary picks, all 5 breeds compared, best saddle, stirrups, horseshoes, champron, and barding ranked.

TL;DR

  • Best overall horse: Royler (legendary white) — highest stamina and movement speed in the game, located near Snowgrass Hearth lake in Pailune.
  • Best combat horse: Camora (legendary red) — highest attack and defense of any mount, found near the Redtree Forest in Tashkalp.
  • Best tank horse: Rokade (legendary black) — ~600 HP base health, easiest to tame (no climate debuff), found near the Spire of Insight in the Steel Mountains.
  • Best horse gear (speed/exploration build): Delesyian Champron (+15 Attack), Delesyian Saddle (+400 HP), Four-Leaf Horseshoes (+8 Attack, +5 Stamina/sec), Delesyian Stirrups (+0.8 HP/sec), Varnia Crown Barding.
  • Best defensive barding: Hagmund Barding (80 Defense, 8,500 Silver from Saddlery vendors).
  • Legendary horses have stats roughly 25–50% higher than any regular breed — always worth taming early if you can.

Your horse in Crimson Desert isn’t just a fast travel button. Pywel is enormous, and you’ll spend hours in the saddle crossing plains, cutting through mountains, and riding into enemy camps. A weak horse with bad gear means constant stops, thrown-off dismounts, and frustratingly short sprints. A properly built horse with the right equipment changes how the entire game feels.

This guide covers the best horse for every playstyle, all five regular breeds compared, the three legendary horses ranked, and every best-in-slot gear piece for each equipment slot — with exact locations and prices.

Horse Basics — What You Need to Know First

Every horse in Crimson Desert has eight stats: Movement Speed, Acceleration, Stamina, Health, Attack, Defense, Jump Power, and Handling. A horse’s breed sets its stat ceiling, and gear from Saddlery shops modifies those stats further.

Horses level up through riding, feeding, and caressing — feeding is fastest, caressing gives free XP between quests, and riding builds trust passively over time. Skills unlock at each Trust level, with all skills unlocked by Level 5.

There are five gear slots for horse equipment:

  • Champron — face plate, boosts Attack
  • Saddle — boosts HP
  • Stirrups — passive HP recovery per second
  • Horseshoes — boost Attack and Stamina regen per second
  • Barding — body armor, boosts Defense

Each of the three playable characters has their own horse, so consider spreading strong gear across mounts rather than stacking everything onto one.

All 5 Horse Breeds Compared

NumontHighest attack, best accelerationLowest stamina (tied with Britano)ChargeCombat-focused builds
ElantrimaHighest health, stamina, and handlingLowest jump power (tied with Britano)Lateral MovementLong rides, tanky combat

Verdict on regular breeds: Elantrima and Priden are the best regular breeds for most players. Elantrima wins on survivability and stamina; Priden offers better jumping for exploration. Britano is a specialist pick — fastest on flat ground, but fragile everywhere else. Herspia and Numont sit behind the rest for general use.

That said, all regular breeds are outclassed by the three legendary horses. Their stat pools run roughly 25–50% higher across the board. If you can tame a legendary, do it before investing heavily in regular breed gear.

Note on the Harmonious Hooves challenge: Horse Challenge #7 requires riding a Priden, Britano, Numont, and Elantrima for at least 100 meters each. Herspia does not count. Legendary horses also have their own challenge tier. Tame at least one of each breed as you encounter them in the wild so you’re not backtracking later.

Best Horse in Crimson Desert — Legendary Horse Tier List

1. Royler — Best Overall Horse

Royler Horse in Crimson Desert
Royler Horse in Crimson Desert

Location: Silverwolf Mountains, Pailune — near the Snowgrass Hearth campsite and lake, just under the “P” in “Pailune” on the map. Also near the lake where the Golden Carp legendary fish spawns.

Taming tip: The Silverwolf Mountains apply a frost debuff that drains your health throughout the taming attempt. Equip cold-resistant gear or eat warming food before you start — see the ice resistance guide for options. Lock your camera directly behind the horse and hold the stick back rather than trying to match individual directional prompts. Zoom the camera out as far as possible for the easiest angle.

Why Royler is the best horse: Royler has Level 4 base movement speed — the other two legendaries are Level 3. Combined with the highest stamina of any horse in the game, Royler sprints for significantly longer before needing to slow down. At Level 5, Royler learns Consecutive Instant Acceleration, which chains drift boosts together for bursts of speed no other horse can match. For open-world exploration and general travel across Pywel, Royler is the clear pick.

2. Camora — Best Combat Horse

Camora
Camora

Location: Tashkalp region, far southeast — near the Redtree Forest, east of the Sanctum of Renunciation and west of the Red River. Look for a cavern meadow filled with flowers.

Taming tip: Tashkalp is hot. The area applies a heat debuff that drains stamina during the taming attempt. Equip fire-resistant gear before approaching. If the area is fogged on your map, ring the bell in Tommaso first to trigger the Toll of Pywel quest and clear the fog. Use the same camera-behind-horse technique as with Royler.

Why Camora is worth it: Camora has the highest attack (27) and defense (100) of any horse in the game. Its Back Kick mounted combat move hits harder than any other horse’s equivalent. If you ride into combat frequently, Camora’s offensive and defensive stats make it the superior mounted combat platform. Speed and stamina fall behind Royler, which is why Camora ranks second overall — but for endgame combat scenarios, it’s the top pick.

3. Rokade — Best Tank / Easiest to Tame

Rokade
Rokade

Location: Steel Mountains, southern Hernand, Grace Estate — south toward the Spire of Insight, near the lake just west of it. Rokade is all-black and easy to spot against the terrain.

Taming tip: The easiest legendary to tame — the Steel Mountains are temperate with no environmental debuffs. Standard stamina investment and the camera technique are all you need. Clear nearby enemies before approaching since the area has active spawns that can interrupt the minigame.

Why Rokade is still worth having: Rokade has a base health pool of roughly 600 HP — nearly double Royler’s. If you take a lot of mounted damage riding through enemy camps or boss areas, Rokade absorbs punishment that would dismount you on any other horse. Speed and stamina lag behind, making it a situational pick rather than a daily driver. Tame Rokade first if you want an easy legendary early, then get Royler for general use.

How to Tame a Horse in Crimson Desert

Wild horses are found near rivers and fresh water away from settlements. Legendary horses have fixed spawns at the locations above.

The taming minigame:

Mount the horse by sprinting up and pressing Interact (E on PC / X or Square on controller). A circular taming meter appears — fill it completely before the horse throws you or your stamina runs out.

The horse bucks and pulls in random directions. You counter each movement by pushing in the opposite direction. The most reliable method: hold the stick straight back and rotate your camera to keep the horse’s rear end centered on screen. With the camera locked behind the horse, holding back is sufficient to keep the meter filling as it spins.

Zoom the camera out as far as possible. This gives you the widest view and makes the rotation much easier to track. If you run out of stamina, the horse stays nearby — reset and try again. It doesn’t flee permanently.

Stamina requirement: Regular horses need reasonable stamina to tame. Legendary horses require at least Stamina Level 6 from the skill tree for a realistic chance. You can also use food buffs or Honey Tea right before the attempt to temporarily extend your stamina.

Once tamed, you get two options: Register and Ride (mount immediately) or Register and Send to Stable (teleports the horse to the nearest stable). Always register immediately — unregistered horses don’t persist if you switch mounts.

Best Horse Gear in Crimson Desert

Horse gear is bought from Saddlery vendors found in every major city. Higher-tier saddleries unlock as you reach new regions. The Delesyia Saddlery is one of the best in the game — it carries the top pieces for multiple slots. Some top-tier items require reaching +100 Trust with the Saddlery vendor by gifting them Ores before they appear in stock.

Upgrade priority: Saddle → Stirrups → Horseshoes → Champron → Barding. Survivability first, then damage.

Best Champron — Delesyian Champron

Stat: +15 Attack

Price: 71.67 Silver Coins

Where to buy: Delesyia Saddlery

The Delesyian Champron gives the highest Attack boost of any Champron in the game. Pure offense — ideal if you use your horse actively in combat or want to maximize mounted attack output. Pair it with defensive gear elsewhere to balance survivability.

Best Saddle — Delesyian Saddle

Stat: +400 HP

Price: 50.20 Silver Coins

Where to buy: Delesyia Saddlery

The Saddle is your biggest single survivability upgrade. +400 HP is a substantial jump from lower-tier saddles, which typically offer +50, +100, or +200 HP. Upgrade the saddle first — it has the most direct impact on how long your horse survives in combat and how often you get dismounted.

Best Horseshoes — Four-Leaf Horseshoes

Stats: +8 Attack, +5 Stamina every 1 second

Price: 54.10 Silver Coins

Where to buy: Delesyia Saddlery

The Four-Leaf Horseshoes are the best horseshoes available — they combine solid Attack with the highest Stamina regen in the game. The +5 Stamina per second recovery means your horse refills sprint fuel significantly faster between gallops, which matters enormously on long cross-region rides. Standard horseshoes only offer +1 to +4 Stamina per second. The gap is significant.

For a further stamina boost, you can also pick up the Steelheart Horse Shoes as an alternative depending on your build priorities.

Best Stirrups — Delesyian Stirrups

Stat: +0.8 HP every 1 second

Price: 15.51 Silver Coins

Where to buy: Delesyia Saddlery — requires +100 Trust with the Saddlery vendor first (gift them Ores to build trust)

The Delesyian Stirrups provide passive health regen that keeps your horse battle-ready between encounters without needing to use consumables. It’s the most underrated gear slot — the regen compounds over long rides and reduces how often you need to stop and heal your mount. The Trust requirement is the only barrier. Gift the Saddlery vendor Ores regularly and you’ll hit +100 quickly.

Best Barding

Two options depending on your goal:

For offense/exploration: Purchase the Varnia Crown from the Varnia Contribution Shop for 70 Contribution Points, then equip the barding it unlocks.

For pure defense: The Hagmund Barding provides +80 Defense — the highest of any barding in the game. It costs 8,500 Silver from Saddlery vendors. If you ride through heavily contested zones and take a lot of horse hits, the Hagmund is the top pick.

Contribution Shop bardings are also solid mid-game options. These cost Contribution Points rather than Silver:

Hernandian Barding2023 Contribution PointsHernand Castle Contribution Shop
Sahareum Barding2023 Contribution PointsTommaso Contribution Shop
Hagmund Barding808,500 SilverSaddlery vendors

The Contribution Shop bardings all give 20 Defense and are great value for the points. Use them through mid-game, then upgrade to Hagmund for endgame. Note: you can sell contribution crowns back to the Contribution Shop at the same price you paid — this lets you unlock vendors temporarily without permanently spending your points.

Pair this gear with Royler for the best speed and exploration build in the game. Swap Hagmund Barding for a Contribution barding early if you haven’t farmed the Silver yet — the 20 Defense options are perfectly serviceable through mid-game.

How to Level Up Your Horse Fast

Three methods work for raising Trust (the horse’s level):

Feeding is the fastest. Buy Horse Feed from any Saddlery vendor and use it from your inventory while mounted. Each feed item gives a chunk of experience. It costs Silver but is the most direct method.

Caressing is free XP. Target your horse (Ctrl on PC, LB on controller) then press the caress button. It gives experience at no cost. Spam this between quests or whenever you’re standing still.

Riding builds Trust passively over time. It’s the slowest method alone but stacks with feeding and caressing automatically as you play.

Legendary horses require double the affinity to level compared to regular horses, so tame them early and start the process as soon as possible. All skills are unlocked by Level 5, including the breed-exclusive skill that defines each legendary’s identity.

You can also accelerate Trust gain by equipping Companionship I, II, or III Abyss Gears — these increase the rate at which you earn Trust from all three leveling methods.

Other Mounts Worth Knowing

Horses are the primary mount in Crimson Desert, but they’re not the only option. For specific situations, other mounts offer advantages no horse can match:

FAQ — Best Horse & Horse Gear in Crimson Desert

What is the best horse in Crimson Desert?

Royler is the best overall horse. It has the highest stamina and movement speed of any horse in the game, including all regular breeds. At Level 5 it learns Consecutive Instant Acceleration, which chains drift speed boosts for bursts no other horse can match. For combat specifically, Camora edges ahead with the highest attack and defense stats.

Where do you find Royler in Crimson Desert?

Royler is found in the Silverwolf Mountains in the Pailune region, near the Snowgrass Hearth campsite and lake, just below the “P” in “Pailune” on the world map. The area applies a frost debuff — equip cold-resistant gear or warming food before attempting the tame.

What is the best horse gear in Crimson Desert?

The best gear per slot is: Delesyian Champron (+15 Attack), Delesyian Saddle (+400 HP), Four-Leaf Horseshoes (+8 Attack, +5 Stamina/sec), Delesyian Stirrups (+0.8 HP/sec, requires +100 Trust), and Hagmund Barding (+80 Defense). All pieces except the barding are bought from the Delesyia Saddlery.

Where is the Delesyia Saddlery in Crimson Desert?

The Delesyia Saddlery is in the Delesyia region. It stocks the best tier of horse gear in the game. The Delesyian Stirrups require reaching +100 Trust with the vendor by gifting Ores before they appear for sale.

What is the best barding in Crimson Desert?

The Hagmund Barding provides +80 Defense — the highest of any barding in the game. It costs 8,500 Silver from Saddlery vendors. If you’re not there yet in terms of Silver, the Contribution Shop bardings (20 Defense for 20–23 Contribution Points each) are excellent mid-game alternatives available in Pailune, Delesyia, Demeniss, Hernand, and Tommaso.

Which legendary horse should I tame first?

Tame Rokade first if you want an easy introduction to legendary taming — the Steel Mountains have no climate debuff, making the minigame significantly more forgiving. Then go for Royler once you have Stamina Level 6 and cold-resistant gear. Camora comes last since Tashkalp is the most remote region and the heat debuff adds pressure to an already demanding tame.
