How to Reinforce Equipment in Crimson Desert – Anvils & Grindstones Guide
TL;DR
- Use Anvils to temporarily boost armor defense. Use Grindstones to temporarily boost weapon attack.
- The buff depletes as you take hits or deal damage — not just over time.
- You can see the Reinforcement stat by hovering over your equipped gear.
- Early Anvil: Bloomwood Ranch (SE of Hernand). Early Grindstone: Timberturner Wainwright (SE of Hernand).
- Another early location: the bandit camp during Chapter 2’s “Trial after Trial” mission.
- Reinforcement (temporary) and Refinement (permanent upgrades at blacksmith) are two completely different systems.
Reinforcing your equipment in Crimson Desert gives you a temporary stat boost before tough fights. Your armor gets more defense. Your weapon hits harder. It wears off as you fight, so you’ll need to refresh it regularly — but it’s one of the easiest ways to improve your chances going into a boss or a liberation zone.
The system is easy to overlook early on because the game doesn’t explain it clearly. Here’s everything you need to know.
Reinforcement vs Refinement — What’s the Difference?
This trips up a lot of players. These are two separate systems and they do not overlap.
Reinforcement is temporary. You do it at Anvils (armor) and Grindstones (weapons). The boost applies immediately and wears off as you take hits or deal damage. You can see your current Reinforcement stat by hovering over your equipped gear in the inventory.
Refinement is permanent. You do it at a blacksmith like Turnali in Hernand using crafting materials like Iron Ore and Timber. It raises your gear’s base stats for good. Check our full equipment upgrade guide for how Refinement works.
Always do both — but Reinforcement is the quick fix before every hard fight.
How to Find and Use Anvils in Crimson Desert
Anvils give your armor a temporary defense boost. The boost shows up as a Reinforcement stat when you hover over your equipped armor. It depletes as enemies hit you.

Where to Find Anvils
- Bloomwood Ranch — southeast of Hernand. Great early-game Anvil, easy to reach.
- Bandit camp in Chapter 2 — during the “Trial after Trial” main mission, you’ll pass through a small bandit camp that has both an Anvil and a Grindstone. Use them.
- Homesteads and camps across the map — Anvils appear regularly at settlements. When you find one, mark it on your map manually. They don’t get permanently marked, so you’ll save yourself a lot of searching later.
- Howling Hill Camp — once you’ve upgraded it enough through dispatch missions, it has both an Anvil and a Grindstone in one convenient spot. Getting there takes time but makes pre-fight prep very easy. See our Howling Hill guide for more on upgrades.

How to Use an Anvil
- Walk up to the Anvil.
- Interact with it — press Square (PS) / X (Xbox) / E (PC).
- Select “Repair”.
Your armor’s defense Reinforcement stat goes back to maximum instantly.
How to Find and Use Grindstones in Crimson Desert
Grindstones give your weapon a temporary attack power boost. Like Anvils, the boost depletes as you deal damage in combat, so refresh it right before a fight — not ten minutes before.

Where to Find Grindstones
- Timberturner Wainwright — southeast of Hernand. Best early Grindstone location.
- Bandit camp in “Trial after Trial” (Chapter 2) — same camp as the early Anvil. Both tools are right there.
- Camps and outposts throughout the map — keep an eye out and mark them when you spot one.
- Howling Hill Camp — same as the Anvil, available after enough upgrades.

How to Use a Grindstone
- Approach the Grindstone.
- Interact — press Square (PS) / X (Xbox) / E (PC).
- Select “Reinforce Weapon” or “Sharpen”.
Works with every weapon type — one-handed, dual-wield, and two-handed weapons like the Hwando katana.
How the Reinforcement Boost Actually Works
A lot of guides just say “it’s temporary” without explaining what that means. Here’s the actual mechanic:
The Reinforcement stat is visible on your gear. Hover over your equipped weapon or armor in the inventory and you’ll see it. When it’s full, you’re getting the full boost. As you fight — taking hits on armor, dealing hits with your weapon — the stat depletes.
When it hits zero, the bonus is gone. That’s your signal to find the nearest Anvil or Grindstone and top up again.
This is also why some players feel like their defense is getting worse mid-session without understanding why. If your armor suddenly feels weaker, check your Reinforcement. It’s almost always the culprit.
What to Do With Enemy Gear You Can’t Repair
Some armor and weapons dropped from enemies cannot be equipped or repaired. Don’t waste time trying to fix these at an Anvil. They’re vendor loot — sell them for Silver and move on. Keeping them just clogs your inventory.

When to Reinforce Equipment in Crimson Desert
Before every boss fight. No exceptions. The attack and defense boosts are free and take under a minute. Use them. Our boss guides — how to beat Ludvig, how to beat Myurdin, and how to beat Kearush the Slayer — will show you just how much every stat point matters.
Before liberation zones. These are sustained combat encounters. Having full Reinforcement going in smooths out the whole run.
When your gear feels weaker than it should. Don’t assume you need better equipment. Check your Reinforcement stat first. Nine times out of ten, it’s just depleted.
After fast traveling to a new area. Quick habit to build — stop at the nearest camp, hit the Anvil and Grindstone, then proceed. Check our fast travel guide if you’re still unlocking waypoints.
