TL;DR
- Ludvig is a two-phase Chapter 7 boss found at Pailune Castle
- Bring Palmar Pills, healing food (+100 HP), and dual one-handed weapons
- Your best skills: Blinding Flash Finisher, Forward Slash (Level 3), and Focus
- Phase 1 can be cheesed by luring him through the east door
- Phase 2 (Awakened Ludvig) requires dodge-heavy play — skip parrying entirely
- After the Dawn questline fight, you can earn the Hungering Fang Leather Cloak and Boots
Ludvig is one of the hardest bosses in Crimson Desert. He shows up in Chapter 7 during the Dawn questline, waiting for you inside Pailune Castle. He hits hard, uses lightning, plays defensively, and transforms for a brutal second phase.
Don’t feel bad if this fight takes you several tries. It’s supposed to. This guide will walk you through exactly how to prepare, how to cheese the fight if you need an easier path, and how to handle every attack across both phases.
You can get Crimson Desert on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, or the Epic Games Store. You can also learn more at the official Crimson Desert website.
Where to Find Ludvig in Crimson Desert
Ludvig is located inside Pailune Castle near the end of Chapter 7, during the Dawn main questline in the Pailune region. He’s a story-required boss — you can’t skip him. Later in the same chapter, during the Twisted Fate sub-quest, you’ll face One-Armed Ludvig at Kingshield Mountain while playing as Oongka.
This guide focuses on both encounters.
What to Bring Before Fighting Ludvig
Getting your inventory right before entering Pailune Castle is half the battle. Here’s what you need:

Palmar Pills — These bring you back from death. Save them. Only use one if Ludvig is nearly dead during his final phase and you slip up. Popping one too early wastes the revive. Learn how to get and use Palmar Pills here.
Healing Food (+100 HP) — Chewy Rice Cakes from Lonnie’s shop at Greymane Camp, Hearty Grilled Meat, and Steamed Eggs all do the job well. Stock up before entering. Save your best food for Phase 2 since Awakened Ludvig hits much harder. Check out our guide on how to cook the best healing food in Crimson Desert for more options.
Dual One-Handed Weapons — Parrying is possible but not the focus here. Two weapons means more damage and faster stun buildup. That matters more in this fight. Read our dual wield guide if you’re not sure how to set this up.
Lightning Resistant Armor — Ludvig’s lightning attacks can stun you for around four seconds. Reaching Lightning Resistance Level 5 makes you fully immune to that stun buildup. It’s not required to win, but it removes a lot of the frustration. See our ice resistance and frost protection guide for reference on how resistance stats work.
Best Skills to Use Against Ludvig
You don’t need every skill to win this fight. These three do the heavy lifting:
Blinding Flash Finisher — This is your most important tool. It’s an unblockable attack that drains both Ludvig’s health and stun bars fast. The input is L1+R1, then R2. Use it every single time Spirit is available. Read our Blinding Flash guide to unlock and set it up properly.
Forward Slash (Level 3) — The R2 lunge is great for poking at Ludvig’s stun and health bar between Blinding Flash windows. Works well in Phase 1. Gets riskier in Phase 2, so use it carefully.
Focus (L3 + R3) — Slows down time and refills your Spirit. This is how you keep Blinding Flash Finisher available throughout the fight. Use it whenever Ludvig backs off or you need to put distance between yourself and him.

How to Cheese Ludvig in Crimson Desert
This method makes Phase 1 significantly easier. Here’s how it works:

- Start the fight normally in the main hall of Pailune Castle.
- Head through the east door marked in the arena.
- Ludvig will sometimes follow you out, but then retreat back inside.
- While he’s outside, use Blinding Flash Finisher immediately.
- Use Focus (L3+R3) to refill your Spirit while you wait for him to come back out.
- Repeat this loop until Phase 1 ends.
For Phase 2, Ludvig is less likely to follow you outside. Instead, use the exterior as a recovery zone. Refill Spirit with Focus, then run back inside, land a Blinding Flash Finisher, and exit again right away. Keep repeating this until he goes down.
One thing to ignore: There are throwable pillars inside the arena. Don’t bother. The wind-up time is far too long, and Ludvig will interrupt you and make you drop it every time.
How to Beat Ludvig — Phase 1 Strategy
Ludvig plays very defensively. He waits for you to make a mistake, then punishes it. Don’t be aggressive unless you have a clear opening.

The core attack loop:
- Use Blinding Flash Finisher when Spirit is available
- Use Forward Slash (R2) to fill in the gaps
- Back off and use Focus to recharge
Attacks to watch for:
Sword Strikes — Ludvig can be parried during his normal sword attacks. The window is very tight though, so only attempt it if you’re confident in the timing. A successful parry gives you Spirit and a small damage window.
Lightning Orbs — Ludvig will stop and fire several orbs at once, sometimes four, sometimes seven or eight. Do not block these. You will get stunned. Roll out of the way or find cover behind a pillar.
Defensive Stance — If Ludvig is standing still and waiting, that’s a trap. He can parry you if you attack during this stance. Let him make the first move.

How to Beat Awakened Ludvig — Phase 2 Strategy

Once Ludvig transforms, the rules change. Forget about parrying. This phase is all about evading and punishing.
Awakened Ludvig grows larger, moves faster, and teleports constantly. Your job is to stay mobile, read his teleports with Focus, and land Blinding Flash Finishers whenever you get a window.
The best combo in Phase 2: Blinding Flash → Force Palm. This stuns Ludvig for an extended period, giving you your main window for real damage. Forward Slash spam is riskier here because of his erratic movement, so stick to this combo as your primary offense.
Attacks to watch for:
Lightning Greatsword — Awakened Ludvig summons a lightning sword with long reach. Do not attempt a parry. Just roll past it.
Darkness Clap — He claps his hands together, which makes the screen go dark. The moment this happens, start rolling. Lightning strikes follow, and then he finishes with a maze of lightning beams. If you get caught in the beams, they will detonate and deal heavy damage.
Ground Slam — He raises his hand and slams it into the floor. This summons lightning strikes in the surrounding area. Stay away from him whenever you see this wind-up.
Lightning Juggle — Occasionally, he will snap onto you and juggle you in the air. You can’t really counter this one. Just spam your healing items until the move ends.
Constant Teleporting — Ludvig moves around the arena constantly in Phase 2. Don’t chase him. Keep your distance, use Focus to read where he’s going, and wait for him to come to you.

One-Armed Ludvig (Twisted Fate Questline)
After the main Pailune Castle fight, Ludvig appears one more time in Chapter 7 during the Twisted Fate questline. This time you’re playing as Oongka, which is a completely different experience.
Oongka doesn’t have a lantern by default. To track Ludvig, hold L1+R1 to reveal a yellow trail you can follow. If you’d rather skip the tracking, you can head directly to the end location.
For the fight itself, Oongka’s starting two-handed axe is slow and not ideal. If possible, switch to two faster one-handed weapons. The fight plays similarly to the original, but without Kliff’s full skill set.
One-Armed Ludvig key attack: He summons a great lightning sword and follows it with a three-hit combo covering a wide area. Watch the sword carefully and dodge in the opposite direction of each swing to use your i-frames properly.
Completing the Twisted Fate questline rewards you with Ignir (spear), Solas Plate Armor, and Solas Plate Boots — some of the best gear available at this point in the story.

Rewards for Beating Ludvig (Dawn Questline)
After defeating Ludvig in the Dawn questline fight at Pailune Castle, you receive:
- Hungering Fang Leather Cloak
- Hungering Fang Leather Boots
Both are solid mid-game armor pieces. Equip them if they’re an upgrade, or sell them depending on your current setup. For help on upgrading your armor further, see our guide on how to upgrade weapons and armor in Crimson Desert.
Quick Summary
Ludvig punishes impatience more than anything else. His defensive stance baits you. His lightning punishes blocking. His second phase punishes aggression.
The winning approach is simple: keep your distance, use Focus to recharge Spirit, land Blinding Flash Finishers whenever you have the opening, and use healing food aggressively before you die. Don’t overthink it. If you’re really stuck on Phase 1, the east door cheese makes it much more manageable.
