Subnautica 2: How to Get a Repair Tool — Blueprint Locations and Crafting Guide

Learn how to unlock and craft the Repair Tool in Subnautica 2 — all three blueprint scan locations, exact crafting materials, and what the tool is used for.

TL;DR

  • The Repair Tool blueprint requires scanning three broken Repair Tools across different ocean wrecks.
  • Fragment 1: Chap’s Blackbox cave — roughly 217–220 meters southeast of the Lifepod.
  • Fragment 2: Ruined underwater structure — roughly 250 meters southeast of the Lifepod.
  • Fragment 3: Large shipwreck — roughly 347–350 meters northeast of the Lifepod.
  • Crafting requires: 1x Titanium Ingot, 1x Wiring Kit, 1x Basic Battery, and 1x Sulfur.
  • Sulfur is the hardest ingredient to get — you need the Heat Tolerance adaptation first.
  • The Repair Tool fixes vehicles, damaged doors, and base structures. It is powered by a Basic Battery.

The Repair Tool is one of the most important items you will craft in Subnautica 2. It fixes damaged vehicles, broken doors, and base structures — and more importantly, it is the key to cutting open a nearby shipwreck and claiming the Rebreather, which dramatically improves your oxygen capacity for deep dives.

Unlocking it is not as simple as finding one blueprint. You need to scan three separate broken Repair Tools scattered across different ocean wrecks. Once all three are scanned, the crafting recipe unlocks and you can build it at your Fabricator. This guide covers every fragment location, the full crafting recipe, and everything you need to know before heading out.

What Is the Repair Tool in Subnautica 2?

The Repair Tool is a battery-powered handheld device that repairs mechanical objects in the ocean. The game describes it as resembling an arc welder in the same way that the Scanner resembles a flashlight — a similar concept, but far more sophisticated. It works by analyzing damaged systems, breaking apart the damaged area with a high-temperature arc, and using magnetohydrodynamic manipulation to reconstruct the material.

In practical terms, you use it to:

  • Repair vehicles — including the Tadpole submersible after it takes damage.
  • Fix damaged doors in wrecks and ocean structures, opening up areas that are otherwise sealed.
  • Repair base modules and damaged systems you encounter during exploration.

It runs on a Basic Battery and consumes charge slowly. In the early game it will not drain quickly, so you will not need to recharge it constantly. When the battery does run out, you can either recharge it or swap in a fresh one.

What You Need Before You Start

Before going after the blueprint fragments, make sure you have a few things in order:

  • Scanner — You cannot collect blueprint fragments without it. See our guide on how to craft the Scanner in Subnautica 2 if you have not built one yet.
  • Adequate oxygen. Some of the wreck interiors require swimming at depth. Manage your O2 carefully. Check our guide on how to swim faster in Subnautica 2 to move through these areas more efficiently.
  • Heat Tolerance adaptation — Not needed for the scanning, but essential for collecting Sulfur to actually craft the tool afterward. Plan this in advance. Our guide on how to get the Heat Tolerance trait walks you through the full process.
  • Flashlight — Wreck interiors are dark. Having a light source saves a lot of fumbling around. See our flashlight blueprint locations guide for help.

All Three Repair Tool Blueprint Fragment Locations

You need all three fragments to unlock the crafting recipe. Miss even one and the blueprint will not unlock. Here is exactly where to find each one.

Fragment 1: Chap’s Blackbox Cave (220 Meters Southeast)

The first fragment is inside the cave connected to Chap’s Blackbox signal — the same cave NOA will eventually point you toward as part of the main storyline. Even if NOA has not marked it yet, you can reach it manually.

How to get there:

  • From the Lifepod, head southeast. Keep your compass bearing between 150 and 165 degrees.
  • Swim until you are approximately 217–220 meters from the Lifepod.
  • Look below for a rocky formation with one tall spire-like pillar sticking up. The area is around 30 meters deep.
  • Look for a blue light near the base of the formation — this marks the cave entrance. There is a ring-like hole leading inside.
  • Dive down and enter the cave. Look toward the northwest inside to spot a red hatch leading to Chap’s base.
  • Head inside and take a left. Move through a cracked elevator floor.
  • Look for the broken Repair Tool sitting on a desk or table in the room. Scan it.

This cave also has Salt, Silver, and Copper deposits nearby — worth collecting while you are there. See our guides on how to get Salt, where to find Silver, and where to find Copper for more on those.

Fragment 2: Ruined Underwater Structure (250 Meters Southeast)

The second fragment is in a large ruined structure a bit further southeast than Chap’s cave. This is the Cicada Wreck (Lander Garage) area.

How to get there:

  • From the Lifepod, swim southeast for approximately 250 meters.
  • Look for a large ruined underwater structure below you — it sits around 30 meters deep.
  • Approach the wreck and find the side entrance opening.
  • Head inside and continue forward. Pass through a doorway.
  • The broken Repair Tool is resting on a set of benches in the southeastern part of the interior room. Scan it.

This same wreck area is where you can find Lead deposits on the ocean floor nearby — the resource you need for the Sonic Resonator. Our guide on where to find Lead in Subnautica 2 covers that in full.

Fragment 3: Large Shipwreck (347–350 Meters Northeast)

The final fragment is the furthest away and requires a longer swim northeast of the Lifepod. This is a different wreck from the southeast locations.

How to get there:

  • From the Lifepod, swim northeast. Keep your compass bearing between 30 and 60 degrees.
  • Swim until you are approximately 347–350 meters from the Lifepod.
  • Dive down. The wreck is visible at depth — look for a big wrecked base structure.
  • Go underneath the wreckage and look for a big half-open door on the left side leading to a large storage area.
  • Enter through the opening. Head through to a room with a window.
  • The third broken Repair Tool is near a small broken door or couch in one of the corners of this room. Scan it.

Once all three fragments are scanned, the Repair Tool crafting recipe will unlock automatically in your Fabricator.

How to Craft the Repair Tool in Subnautica 2

With the blueprint unlocked, head back to your Fabricator. You need the following four materials:

Once all four materials are in your inventory, open the Fabricator and craft the Repair Tool. If your Fabricator is throwing an error, check our fix guide for the requires fully functional Fabricator issue.

How to Use the Repair Tool

Using the Repair Tool is simple. Equip it from your inventory, point it at a damaged object or structure, and hold the repair button. The tool will slowly restore the durability of whatever you are targeting.

It runs on a Basic Battery. The drain is slow in the early game, so a single battery will last through many repair jobs before needing replacement. When it runs out, either recharge the battery at a charging station or swap in a new one. The tool itself does not degrade — only the battery needs replacing.

What to Do With the Repair Tool After Crafting It

Your first job after crafting the Repair Tool is to use it on the large shipwreck approximately 360 meters northeast of the Lifepod — the Cicada Wreck (Lander Garage). Inside, there are sealed doors you can now cut open. Beyond those doors you will find the Rebreather — a critical piece of equipment that removes the rapid oxygen depletion penalty when swimming at depth, giving you much more time to explore underwater without surfacing.

The Rebreather is one of the most important upgrades in the early game. Without it, deep diving is a constant race against your oxygen counter. Getting the Repair Tool quickly means getting the Rebreather quickly, which makes everything else in the game more manageable.

Beyond the Rebreather, keep the Repair Tool on you for:

  • Fixing your Tadpole after it takes damage from collisions or hostile creatures. See our multiplayer co-op guide for tips on managing vehicle health in group play.
  • Opening sealed doors in wrecks and alien structures as you explore deeper into the game.
  • Repairing base modules that get damaged during gameplay.

Tips for Getting the Repair Tool Faster

  • Collect all three fragments in one session if possible. The three wreck locations form a rough triangle around the Lifepod. Plan your route to hit all three without returning to base between trips, especially once you have the Tadpole for faster travel.
  • Get Heat Tolerance before worrying about Sulfur. You cannot safely farm Sulfur without it. Unlock the adaptation first, then do your Sulfur run, then craft the tool. Our Heat Tolerance guide has the full walkthrough.
  • Pre-craft the Wiring Kit and Basic Battery. These two components can be made before you even scan the first fragment. Silver, Copper, and Acidic Raion Pouches are all reachable early. Having components ready cuts down the wait once the blueprint is unlocked.
  • Build a Scanner Station to track resources. Once you have the Repair Tool blueprint scanned and just need materials, a Scanner Station at your base will show you every nearby deposit of Titanium, Silver, and Copper, making material gathering much faster.
  • Use blueprints you scan in the wrecks. Each wreck interior has other scannable items beyond the Repair Tool fragment — Biobeds, Bioreactors, and other tech. Scan everything while you are inside. See our guide on how to unlock blueprints and crafting recipes to understand how the scanning system works.

Common Questions About the Repair Tool

Do I need the Sonic Resonator to get the Repair Tool?

Not for scanning the fragments — you can collect all three blueprint pieces without it. However, to gather Sulfur for crafting, you will need the Sonic Resonator to break large Sulfur deposits. Small loose Sulfur pieces near Chap’s cave can be picked up by hand, which may be enough for a single Repair Tool craft. See our guide on how to make the Wakemaker if you are planning your full crafting chain.

Can I find a Repair Tool already built in the ocean?

The fragments you scan are broken versions of the tool found in wrecks — they are not functional items you can pick up and use. You must craft the working version at your Fabricator after scanning all three.

Does the Repair Tool work in co-op?

Yes. Any player who has crafted their own Repair Tool can use it on shared vehicles and structures. In co-op sessions, it is worth having at least one person prioritize crafting it early so vehicle repairs are not a bottleneck. Check our Subnautica 2 multiplayer co-op guide for more on how shared resources and tools work across players.

How do I recharge the Repair Tool’s battery?

The Repair Tool runs on a Basic Battery that you can remove and replace. When the battery dies, open your inventory, pull the battery out of the tool, and insert a fresh one. You can craft Basic Batteries at the Fabricator using Copper Ore and Acidic Raion Pouches. The tool itself has no durability — only the battery wears out.

Thoughts

The Repair Tool is not optional — it sits right on the critical path to the Rebreather, which means it sits on the critical path to comfortable deep-sea exploration in Subnautica 2. Three scans, four materials, and you have one of the most useful tools in the game.

The three wreck locations are not far from the Lifepod, and most of the crafting materials are things you will be collecting anyway as part of normal progression. Sulfur is the only real roadblock — and once you have Heat Tolerance sorted, that stops being a problem too.

Scan the fragments, gather your materials, craft the tool, and go get that Rebreather. The deeper ocean is waiting.
