The Witcher 3 Remastered What Does Meditating Do

    TL;DR

    • Meditation restores Geralt’s health to full on Just the Story and Story and Sword difficulty.
    • On Blood and Broken Bones and Death March, meditation does NOT restore health.
    • Meditating for at least one hour restocks all your potions and bombs using alcohol from your inventory.
    • Meditation resets toxicity to zero, letting you use decoctions and potions freely again.
    • You can use it to skip time — useful for quests, boss encounters, and refreshing merchant stock.
    • In The Witcher 3 Remastered, meditation now shows a real-time timelapse instead of a static menu screen.
    • You cannot meditate while on horseback or in combat.
    • Remastered added a new Bard’s Ballad accessibility preset that removes several systems (durability, carry weight, breath meter) and is available on any difficulty — worth enabling even if you play on normal or higher.

What Is Meditation in The Witcher 3 Remastered?

Meditation is one of the most useful mechanics in The Witcher 3 Remastered, and one of the most misunderstood. Many players open it once, see a clock, and then ignore it for the rest of the game. That is a mistake.

Meditation does several things at once — it heals Geralt, refills all your potions and bombs, clears your toxicity, and skips time to any point you choose. Used correctly, it is one of the most powerful tools in the game. Used incorrectly — or not at all — you end up burning through food and struggling with empty potion slots when you could be sorting all of it in seconds.

The Remastered version launched on September 29, 2026 also changed how meditation looks. Instead of the old static UI screen, meditation now plays a real-time timelapse of the world around Geralt as the hours pass. It is a small but welcome change that makes the mechanic feel much more immersive. For a full list of what changed in the update, see our Patch 5.0 guide.

How to Meditate in The Witcher 3 Remastered

How to Meditate in The Witcher 3 Remastered

There are two ways to open the meditation screen. Both work at any time as long as you are not in combat and not mounted on Roach.

Method 1 – Through the Pause Menu

Open the main menu and navigate to the Meditation tab, which sits at the far right of the menu list. You will see a clock face. Drag the hand forward to set how many hours Geralt should meditate, or select one of the four preset markers — Dawn, Midday, Dusk, or Midnight. Confirm and the meditation begins.

Method 2 – Through the Sign Quick Menu

This is the faster option in the middle of gameplay. Hold the sign selection button to open the radial wheel:

    • PC: Press N as a direct shortcut, or hold the sign wheel key and look for the meditation prompt.
    • PS5: Hold L1 to open the sign wheel, then press Square for the meditation option.
    • Xbox Series X|S: Hold LB to open the sign wheel, then press X.
    • Nintendo Switch 2: Hold L to open the sign wheel, then press the corresponding button shown on the radial prompt.

Once you confirm the time you want to meditate to, Geralt sits down and the timelapse plays out. You do not need to find a campfire or a safe zone. You can meditate anywhere outdoors or indoors as long as combat is not active.

Meditation Restores Health – But Only on Some Difficulties

This is the part that confuses new players the most. Whether meditation heals you depends entirely on your chosen difficulty.

Just the Story and Story and Sword (Normal) – Full Heal

On Just the Story and Story and Sword! difficulty, meditating for just one hour fully restores Geralt’s health bar to maximum. No food, no potions, no cost. It is completely free. This makes meditation an extremely powerful recovery tool for players who are still learning the game or just want to focus on the story.

Just the Story is the lowest difficulty added in Remastered. It sits below Story and Sword and is also where the new Bard’s Ballad accessibility preset can be enabled when starting a new game. See the Bard’s Ballad section below for details on what this unlocks.

Blood and Broken Bones and Death March – No Healing

On the two harder difficulty settings — Blood and Broken Bones! and Death March! — meditation does not restore health at all. On these difficulties, the only ways to heal are through food, potions like Swallow, and decoctions. Meditation still does everything else (potion restocking, toxicity reset, time skipping), but health recovery is not one of them. This is a core part of what makes higher difficulties more demanding — you cannot simply sit down and recover between fights.

Meditation Restocks Your Potions and Bombs

This function works on every difficulty, including Death March. It is arguably the most important thing meditation does on harder difficulties.

When you meditate for at least one hour, the game automatically refills all your depleted potion and bomb charges using strong alcohol from your inventory. You do not need to craft anything manually. The game handles all of it in one step.

The alcohol used follows a priority order:

    1. White Gull is consumed first.
    2. Alcohest is used next.
    3. Dwarven Spirit is used last.

Crucially, only one bottle of alcohol is consumed per meditation session — regardless of how many potions and bombs need restocking. If you used six potions and four bombs, a single Alcohest tops all of them up at once. This makes alcohol incredibly efficient to stockpile. Always keep a supply in your inventory so every meditation session also refills your combat toolkit.

If you have no alcohol at all, meditation still works for healing and time skipping — but your potions and bombs will stay empty.

Tip: Remastered added the ability to gather herbs while mounted on Roach without dismounting. This makes it easier to stock up on alchemy ingredients — and to collect the herbs needed to craft White Gull and Alcohest — during exploration, without interrupting your riding route.

    Meditation Resets Toxicity to Zero

Every time you use a potion or decoction, Geralt’s toxicity level rises. If it climbs too high, your health starts draining — a dangerous situation in any fight. Decoctions in particular raise toxicity significantly because they last a long time.

Meditating resets your toxicity level back to zero instantly. This lets you freely use potions and decoctions again without the risk of poisoning yourself. It is especially useful when you want to stack multiple decoctions for a tough boss fight — drink them, fight, then meditate to clear the toxicity before the next encounter.

On Death March, managing toxicity properly is one of the keys to surviving hard fights. Knowing you can clear it with a quick meditation gives you much more flexibility with your alchemy build. See our best builds guide for how alchemy and toxicity work together in Remastered.

Meditation Skips Time – Very Useful for Quests

The clock in the meditation menu is not just decoration. Geralt can skip forward to any time of day by setting the hand on the clock. This has a lot of practical uses that players often overlook.

    Quest Timing

Several quests in The Witcher 3 only trigger at specific times of day. A quest might ask you to meet someone at midnight, or tell you that a certain event only happens at dusk. Instead of wandering around for ten minutes waiting, open the meditation menu, set the time to midnight or dusk, and skip straight there. The quest proceeds immediately when you are done meditating.

    Night Creature Encounters

Some contracts and encounters specifically require night-time. Certain monsters are only active after dark — Noonwraiths and Nightwraiths being the most well-known examples. Meditate to Midnight or Dusk to get into position for those fights without waiting around in real time.

    Merchant Stock Refresh

Merchants in The Witcher 3 Remastered have a limited pool of Crowns and a finite inventory that refreshes approximately every five in-game days. If you have sold a lot to one merchant and cleaned out their gold, or if you need them to restock a specific crafting material or item, meditate forward by five or more days. Their gold and inventory will reset. This is also useful for restocking alcohol supplies from herbalists and alchemists when you are running low.

    Avoiding Darkness

Exploring at night in The Witcher 3 Remastered can be genuinely difficult due to low visibility, even with Remastered’s improved lighting. If you are about to head into unfamiliar territory or an area full of question marks, meditating to 5 AM or 6 AM so the sun comes up is a simple quality-of-life habit that makes navigation much easier. Remastered also added a new exploration camera with a wider field of view, which helps further with daytime navigation.

What You Cannot Do While Meditating

There are a few restrictions worth knowing:

    • You cannot meditate while in combat or while enemies are nearby and actively pursuing Geralt.
    • You cannot meditate while on Roach. Dismount first. Note that Remastered changed horse controls — cantering and galloping now require pressing rather than holding the button, so getting on and off Roach may feel slightly different from older playthroughs.
    • Meditation is not a fast travel option. It skips time in place — Geralt stays exactly where he is geographically.
    • Meditation does not save your game. Manual saves and autosaves are separate.

Bard’s Ballad — The New Accessibility Preset That Affects Meditation

Remastered added a dedicated Accessibility section to the Settings menu. The standout addition is a new preset called Bard’s Ballad, which is designed to reduce cognitive load for players who find certain game systems stressful or inaccessible.

You can enable Bard’s Ballad in two ways:

    • When starting a new game on Just the Story difficulty, you will be offered the option to enable it.
    • At any point during the game, go to Settings → Accessibility and toggle the preset on or off. It can be customised — you do not have to accept everything it enables at once.

Several Bard’s Ballad options directly affect how you interact with meditation and alchemy:

    • Equipment durability removed — Weapons and armour no longer degrade. Less reason to manage between-fight upkeep alongside meditation restocking.
    • Carry weight limit removed — Inventory weight is disabled. You can hoard as much alcohol, food, and crafting materials as you want without any cap, making it much easier to maintain a full meditation supply.
    • Underwater breath meter removed — Geralt no longer runs out of air underwater.
    • Witcher Sense toggle — Instead of holding the button to keep Witcher Sense active, it now toggles on and off with a single press.

Bard’s Ballad is worth checking even if you play on normal or higher difficulties. Some of its individual options, particularly the carry weight removal, are genuine quality-of-life improvements rather than pure difficulty reductions. You can mix and match — enable carry weight removal while leaving everything else at default, for example.

Meditation in The Witcher 3 Remastered vs. the Original

The core mechanics of meditation have not changed in the Remastered update — health rules, potion restocking, toxicity reset, and time skipping all work exactly as before. What changed is purely visual. The old version showed a simple UI screen with a spinning clock. In Remastered, CD Projekt Red replaced this with a real-time animated timelapse of the world around Geralt. You watch the sky shift, shadows move, and the light change as the hours pass. It is a small detail but it adds real atmosphere to what was previously a purely functional screen.

It is the kind of polish that makes the Remastered version feel more alive. Alongside the new timelapse, the skill screen and map UI have also been updated. Our skill tree guide covers the new layout in full.

    Post-Launch Patch Notes — Meditation-Relevant Fixes

CD Projekt Red has shipped several updates since the September 29, 2026 launch. One fix directly affects the meditation screen.

    Patch 5.01 — October 8, 2026 (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S)

Meditation screen input hint flicker fixed. At launch, control hints (button prompts) were briefly flickering on screen each time the meditation screen opened. This was a cosmetic UI bug with no effect on the meditation mechanic itself, but it could be distracting, particularly on the new timelapse sequence. Fixed in Patch 5.01.

Note: Patch 5.01 has not yet shipped to Nintendo Switch 2. Switch 2 players remain on the launch build, so the input hint flicker may still be present on that platform.

For the full list of gameplay and skill fixes in Patch 5.01 — including the Blade Oils bug and dodge delay fix that are relevant to Death March preparation — see our healing guide.

    Meditation Tips Worth Knowing

    • Always keep alcohol. Alcohest is the most common strong alcohol and drops from nearly every enemy and loot container in the game. Hoard it. A full stack of Alcohest means you can restock potions after every single fight without thinking about it.
    • Meditate before boss fights. Before any major encounter, sit down for an hour. Full health (on lower difficulties), full potions, full bombs, zero toxicity — you go into every fight at maximum readiness.
    • Meditate after heavy alchemy use. If you stacked multiple decoctions and your toxicity is dangerously high, meditate to reset it before the next fight.
    • Use it for time-gated quests immediately. If a quest says “come back at midnight,” do not wander around doing other things and risk missing a time window. Just meditate to the right time on the spot.
    • Meditate to morning before exploring. Visibility at night is limited. Skipping to dawn takes seconds and saves real frustration in dense forest areas or new map regions.
    • Check Bard’s Ballad for carry weight removal. If you find yourself constantly dropping alcohol or food to stay under the carry limit, Bard’s Ballad’s carry weight option removes the cap entirely — without touching difficulty or combat.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does meditation heal you in The Witcher 3 Remastered?

It depends on your difficulty. On Just the Story and Story and Sword!, meditation fully restores Geralt’s health for free after one hour. On Blood and Broken Bones! and Death March!, meditation does not restore health at all. You must use food and potions to heal on those difficulties.

How do you meditate in The Witcher 3 Remastered?

Open the main menu and select the Meditation tab at the far right. Set the clock forward to your desired time and confirm. On consoles, hold the sign selection button (L1 on PS5, LB on Xbox) to open the quick wheel and find the meditation shortcut. On PC, press N as a direct shortcut. You cannot meditate while in combat or while on horseback.

Does meditation restock potions in The Witcher 3 Remastered?

Yes. Meditating for at least one hour automatically refills all depleted potion and bomb charges using strong alcohol (White Gull, Alcohest, or Dwarven Spirit) from your inventory. Only one bottle is consumed per session, regardless of how many items need restocking. This works on all difficulty levels including Death March.

    Does meditation clear toxicity?

Yes. Meditation resets Geralt’s toxicity level to zero every time you use it. This is especially useful when you have been using multiple decoctions and need to start fresh before the next encounter.

Can you meditate on Death March?

Yes, but it will not restore your health. On Death March, meditation is still useful for restocking potions and bombs, resetting toxicity, and skipping time. Health recovery must be done with food and healing potions only.

How do you skip time with meditation?

Open the meditation menu and use the clock to set a specific hour, or select one of the preset time markers — Dawn, Midday, Dusk, or Midnight. Geralt meditates until that time is reached in-game. He does not move location, just advances the time of day.

How does meditation look different in The Witcher 3 Remastered?

In the Remastered update (Patch 5.0, September 29, 2026), the old static UI meditation screen was replaced with a real-time timelapse. As Geralt meditates, you now see the world around him shift through the hours — sky, light, and shadows all moving visually. The mechanics are the same, only the presentation changed.

Why aren’t my potions restocking after meditation?

If your potions are not restocking after meditating, check your inventory for strong alcohol — White Gull, Alcohest, or Dwarven Spirit. If you have none of these, meditation cannot restock your potions even if you meditate for many hours. Buy or loot alcohol regularly to keep this working. Also make sure you meditated for at least one hour, not just a few minutes.

What is Bard’s Ballad and how does it relate to meditation?

Bard’s Ballad is a new accessibility preset added in The Witcher 3 Remastered. It removes several management systems including equipment durability and carry weight limits. The carry weight removal is particularly relevant to meditation prep — you can stockpile as much alcohol and food as you like without being weight-capped. It can be enabled from Settings → Accessibility at any point in the game, on any difficulty, and its individual options can be toggled independently.

What is Just the Story difficulty in The Witcher 3 Remastered?

Just the Story is the lowest difficulty added in The Witcher 3 Remastered, sitting below Story and Sword. Like Story and Sword, it allows meditation to fully restore health. It is also where the Bard’s Ballad accessibility preset can be enabled when starting a new game, though Bard’s Ballad can be turned on or off at any point in the Accessibility settings regardless of difficulty.
