What Are Animus Keys in AC Black Flag Resynced

Animus Keys are a currency system introduced in AC Shadows and carried over into Black Flag Resynced. They replace the old Uplay challenge system from the original AC4 as the home of cross-series unlockables. You earn them by playing the game — there is no option to purchase them with real money.

In the world, Keys appear as white glowing cubes bearing the Animus triangle logo. They show on the map as triangle icons after syncing a Viewpoint in the surrounding area. Walk up to one and interact with it to collect it and add 30 Keys to your total.

Keys are tied to your Ubisoft account, not your save. That means any Keys you earn in Black Flag Resynced carry over if you also play AC Shadows, and Keys earned in Shadows can be spent on Exchange items in Resynced. Both games share the same Exchange Store infrastructure.

How to Spend Animus Keys

To access the Exchange Store and spend your Keys:

• Press F1 on PC (or the equivalent Animus button on console) to open the Animus menu
• Navigate to the Exchange tab
• Select the game (Black Flag Resynced or AC Shadows)
• Choose the item you want and select Acquire

Notable confirmed Exchange items in Black Flag Resynced include:

• Connor’s Outfit (Assassin robes from AC III) — 3,000 Keys
• Ship cosmetics, additional swords for Edward, and other rotating items

The store rotates, so available items can change over time. The Exchange is also where you can grab free items from redeemed codes, which have handed out Keys and cosmetics like the Crimson Storm Sails since launch.

All Animus Key World Collectible Locations

There are 5 confirmed Animus Key collectible locations hidden across the Caribbean. Each awards 30 Keys on collection. Here’s where to find every one:

1. Cape Bonavista — Behind the Southern Waterfall

The Cape Bonavista Key is found behind the small waterfall on the southern side of the island. Head to the southern coast of Cape Bonavista and look for the waterfall — the glowing cube is tucked just behind it. This is one of the earliest Keys you can grab since Cape Bonavista is the very first island in the game.

2. Havana — Outside Castillo San Salvador de la Punta

The Havana Key sits in front of the cannons outside Castillo San Salvador de la Punta on the northern side of Havana. The fortress is easy to find on the northern edge of the city. The Key is on the ground outside it, near the cannon emplacements. Watch out for guards in the area if your notoriety is active.

3. Caribbean Sea — Small Island West of Abaco Island

This Key is on a small unnamed island in the open Caribbean Sea, directly west of Abaco Island. Specifically it’s on the northern side of that island. Sail west from Abaco Island until you spot the small landmass and look for the Key along the northern shoreline.

4. Abaco Island — Bent Tree on the Eastern Side

The Abaco Island Key is on the eastern side of the island at the end of a bent tree. You need to climb the bent tree and jump to the nearby tree stump to collect it. This is the most parkour-requiring Key in the set — it won’t be on the ground level, so check the tree branches if you’re walking past without seeing it.

5. Nassau — Above the Western Swamp

The Nassau Key is floating between two tree branches above the western swamp area of Nassau. There’s no complex climbing required here — just jump up and grab it from between the branches. It’s easy to miss on foot if you’re not looking up, so use the Spyglass or check the map for the triangle icon to pinpoint the exact spot.

All Ways to Earn Animus Keys in AC Black Flag Resynced

World collectibles are just a starting point. The 5 pickups above give you 150 Keys total — nowhere near enough to buy most Exchange items on their own. Here’s every way to earn more:

Animus Projects (Main Source)

Projects are free seasonal tracks — think of them as a free battle pass inside the Animus. You progress through them by earning Data Fragments from Anomaly challenges. Anomalies appear on the map as white stripe icons and involve tasks like sinking corrupted ships or defeating corrupted enemies. They award around 700–800 Data Fragments each and reset weekly.

At launch there are three active Projects:

• Eye in the Dark — ~4,000 Keys, rewards for Black Flag Resynced (including Edward’s outfit for use in AC Shadows)
• Riptides — ~3,500 Keys, rewards for AC Shadows
• Undertow — ~3,500 Keys, rewards for AC Shadows

If you only play Black Flag Resynced and have no interest in AC Shadows rewards, Eye in the Dark is the Project to prioritise — it’s the only one where the top reward is an outfit usable in Black Flag Resynced itself.

Synchronisation Objectives

The Synchronisation tab in the Animus menu has a series of objectives grouped into three categories: Journey, Edward, and Dark Animus. Completing all objectives in a sequence rewards 300 Keys. These include story milestones, combat challenges, completing Anomalies, doing naval contracts, and more.

Ubisoft has handed out free Animus Keys through promotional codes since launch. • Sync Viewpoints first in every region you visit — this reveals nearby Key locations as triangle icons on the map so you don’t walk past them
• Prioritise Eye in the Dark in Projects if you want rewards usable in Black Flag Resynced rather than AC Shadows
• Complete Anomalies weekly — they reset and are the fastest consistent source of Data Fragments to push Project tiers
• Complete all 4 Animus Rifts for the bonus 300 Keys from the Synchronisation tab — don’t forget to claim them from the menu after finishing the last Rift
• Check for new promo codes regularly — Ubisoft has issued free Key bundles and will likely continue doing so
• Keys carry across games — if you’re building toward a big purchase like Connor’s Outfit, any Keys from AC Shadows count toward your total
