- Quest: Into the Sinkhole — part of the Contain the Crisis main story chain.
- Starts at the Evacuation Zone after completing Arish’s Briefing.
- You ride the diving bell down, clear Hiss at each stop, install four Probe Relays at Bedrock, and escape.
- The diving bell is cut off after relays are installed — do not try to go back up the same way.
- Follow the glowing cable, then listen for Zoe’s music to find the exit.
- Reward: 1x Living Shard. Unlocks the next main quest: Enemy of My Enemy.
Into the Sinkhole is one of the most memorable missions in Control Resonant. It takes Dylan Faden deep underground through a Patterned sinkhole, with several combat stops along the way. The escape section trips a lot of players up — the route changes completely after you install the relays. This walkthrough covers every step so you don’t get stuck.
How to Start Into the Sinkhole
Into the Sinkhole is the fourth main mission in the Contain the Crisis questline. It runs in parallel with Power Lines — both unlock at the same time after you complete Arish’s Briefing at the Central Field Office. You can do them in either order, but both must be finished before the CFD story advances.
To unlock this quest, you need to:
- Complete Evacuation Procedures and rescue Arish from the Evacuation Zone.
- Defeat the required Central Resonant and West Incursion Zone Resonant.
- Sit through Arish’s Briefing at the Field Office.
Once that’s done, head to the Evacuation Zone. The Sinkhole is the large pit you passed on your way in the first time.
Step 1 — Escort the Probe Relays Into the Sinkhole
The diving bell hangs over the Sinkhole. Jump on top of it and interact with the button to start descending. Zoe will be on comms as you go down, though her signal gets patchy the deeper you go.
The bell stops a short way down. You need to get out and clear a room of Hiss enemies before it will continue. These are standard combat encounters — clear everything in the area, then jump back on top of the bell and hit the button again to keep going down.
The bell pauses a second time at a mid-shaft platform. Clear the Hiss here too. Once the area is clean, the descent continues.
Step 2 — Find and Defeat the Invisible Hiss

Deep in the shaft, Dylan arrives inside a Patterned apartment complex structure. Here the bell stops because of a hidden Hiss miniboss.
This enemy turns invisible and hides in the room. You won’t be able to see it clearly. To track it down:
- Watch your minimap icon — it marks the enemy’s position even when cloaked.
- Look for red glowing lamps near the enemy — they light up when the Hiss is close to them.
- Attack in the direction your map is pointing. You’ll hit it and break the cloak.
There are actually a few named Hiss you’ll fight during the descent — including Dan, Anne, and Michelle. These are mid-tier Hiss variants. Fight through all of them as the mission directs. After the key invisible Hiss is down, the diving bell can continue.
Step 3 — Install the Probe Relays

The bell finally reaches Bedrock — the bottom of the Sinkhole. This is where the mission shifts to installing the Probe Relays.
The relays drop to the ground near a central dispenser. Pick one up. Note that carrying a relay limits your movement — you can’t make full-height jumps, and you can only climb up one building tier at a time. Plan your routes carefully.
There are four relay positions spread across the Bedrock structures. Each one is marked on your radar with a radio symbol. Here’s the process for each:
- First Relay: Carry it to the apartment building rooftop near the dispenser. Place it on the high terrace and activate it.
- Second Relay: Take it to the upper level of the floating complex on the opposite side of the Sinkhole.
- Third Relay: Carry it to the building with modular dining tables on the highest level.
- Fourth Relay: Place it at the final marked position in the Bedrock area.
Important: Placing a relay on the ground is not enough. After placing each one, you must interact with the back of it to activate it. Zoe specifically reminds you of this. If your quest isn’t advancing, check whether you activated the relay after placing it.
Step 4 — Defeat the Hiss Ruiner

After the last relay goes live, things go wrong fast. The lights go out, the Sinkhole becomes unstable, and the bell’s cable is cut. You can no longer get back the way you came down.
A large wave of Hiss floods the Bedrock arena. Clear them out. Then a giant flying Hiss — the Hiss Ruiner — appears. This is a proper boss fight. It’s a big, airborne enemy with heavy attacks.
Tips for this fight:
- Stay mobile and use the floating structures for cover.
- Prioritize staying off the ground — the Ruiner deals serious ground-level damage.
- Use your best combat abilities. This is a good time to use everything you’ve unlocked. Check our Shift ability guide if you want traversal options in this fight.
Once the Ruiner is dead, floating platforms and debris appear in the Sinkhole shaft. These form a climbing route upward.
Step 5 — Escape the Sinkhole
Do not try to go back the way you came. The Sinkhole has shifted — the original route no longer exists. The escape path is completely different from the descent.
Here’s how to get out:
- Look for a glowing power cable attached to the Diving Bell. Follow it.
- Jump on the floating platforms and climb upward through the shaft using the cable as a guide.
- At some point, the cable trail ends. This is where many players get confused.
- When the cable stops, listen for Zoe’s music. She reaches the PA system and plays music into the Sinkhole as a navigation cue.
- Follow the sound. It leads you through a corridor with green-and-yellow wallpaper, into a maintenance area, then a break room.
- Keep moving through green-lit doorways until you reach a commercial laundromat.
- Exit through the laundromat to reach the surface.
When Dylan steps outside, the quest completes. You receive 1x Living Shard as the reward. The next main quest — Enemy of My Enemy — unlocks immediately after.
Common Problems and Fixes
The diving bell won’t move
You haven’t cleared all the Hiss in the room yet. Check every corner of the area. The bell only moves when the combat encounter is fully complete.
I placed the relays but nothing happened
Place is not the same as activate. Walk up to the back of each placed relay and interact with it to activate. The mission will not advance until every relay is both placed and activated.
I can’t find the invisible Hiss
Use the minimap. The enemy marker shows its position even when it’s cloaked. Move toward the marker and attack — it will reveal itself when hit.
I can’t get back up after installing the relays
That’s intentional. The escape route is not the way you came down. Follow the glowing cable, and when it ends, follow the music. Don’t backtrack.
The quest isn’t advancing even though I finished Power Lines
Both Into the Sinkhole and Power Lines must be completed, along with the Central and West Incursion Zone Resonants. Check all four before assuming there’s a bug.
