The Shift ability in Control Resonant is one of the most important movement upgrades in the game. It lets Dylan walk on walls, vertical roads, and gravity-shifted surfaces. You get it by completing The Incursion Fault in the West Incursion Zone.
This guide covers the full walkthrough — how to power the elevator, find the Parking Garage key, enter the Fault, and unlock Shift.
TL;DR
- The Shift ability comes from The Incursion Fault in the West Incursion Zone.
- Head to the Parking Garage in the northwest corner of the zone.
- First, power the elevator using the charged power cell from the House of Mirrors.
- Get the Parking Garage Security Key from the floating attendant inside the Wear ‘Em & Wash ‘Em laundromat.
- Enter the garage, take the elevator to the roof, drop into the central shaft, and interact with Jesse to unlock Shift.
- Use Shift immediately to escape the warped garage.
- Rewards: Shift ability, 1 Living Shard, 1 Talent Point, and the “Repeating, Refracting” record.
What Is the Shift Ability in Control Resonant?
Shift is a traversal ability that lets Dylan align his gravity with Gravity Anomalies. In practical terms, that means walking on walls, ceilings, vertical roads, and other surfaces that would normally be impossible to cross.
When you approach a surface marked as a Gravity Anomaly — often coated in golden leaf-like visual effects — pressing the ability button snaps Dylan onto that surface. It then becomes his new floor.
This completely changes how you move around Manhattan. Areas that looked like dead ends before suddenly become valid paths. Several major story routes and collectibles are completely locked behind Shift, so getting it early is well worth it.
Shift is a traversal ability, not a combat ability. Traversal abilities come from Faults. Combat abilities come from defeating Resonants. The two systems are separate in Control Resonant.
You can check our beginner tips guide for a full breakdown of how abilities work early in the game.
Control Resonant Traversal Ability Unlock Order
There are five traversal abilities in Control Resonant. Here is the order you unlock them:
- Double Jump, Elevate, Rush — Unlocked during the Orientation Fault at the very start of the game.
- Shift — Unlocked by completing The Incursion Fault in the West Incursion Zone.
- Reach — Unlocked by completing The Subway Fault in the Evacuation Zone. Requires Shift to access.
The order matters. The Subway Fault needs Shift, and the Underpass Fault needs Reach. You cannot skip steps. Complete The Incursion Fault first before attempting either of those.
How to Start The Incursion Fault
The Incursion Fault starts automatically when you enter the West Incursion Zone for the first time. You will see a vision of Jesse on the street near a patterned road section. This vision kicks off the quest and points you toward a Parking Garage to the northwest.
The garage is your destination. But before you can enter, there are two things to do: power the elevator and find the key.
Step 1 — Power the Elevator
The road leading up to the Parking Garage is patterned and bent — a vertical surface you cannot walk on yet. There is a lift at the base of this road, but it has no power.

To power it, go into the House of Mirrors building nearby. Inside, you will find a charged power cell glowing orange. Strike it with Dylan’s Aberrant to transfer the electricity. Then quickly carry the charge back out and strike the power cell beside the lift before the charge fades.
Once the charge transfers, the elevator activates. Ride it to the upper street level. The Parking Garage will be directly ahead of you.
Step 2 — Find the Parking Garage Security Key
The front door of the Parking Garage is locked. There is a note near the entrance mentioning that the security guard went to the laundromat.
Head to the Wear ‘Em & Wash ‘Em laundromat, which is southwest of the garage in the same area. You may have already been here for a puzzle — if so, you know the layout. If not, check out our Wear’em Washem puzzle guide for help navigating that building.
Go inside and find the security guard. He is under Hiss influence and floating. Interact with him to take the Parking Garage Security Key. Picking it up also grants you +94 Source and a Mourning Echo.
Return to the garage entrance and use the key on the door labeled Unparalleled Parking Administrative Office.
Step 3 — Enter the Parking Garage and Reach the Roof
Once inside, take the elevator in the garage up to the rooftop parking area. When you reach the top, you will see that the environment has been heavily distorted. The parking lanes twist and bend downward into a large open shaft in the middle of the structure.
A vision of Jesse appears here. Follow it, then jump down the central shaft in the middle of the car park. The drop goes quite far down. At the bottom of the shaft is the Incursion Fault itself.

Step 4 — Complete the Incursion Fault and Unlock Shift
At the bottom of the shaft, you enter the Fault. This is a short, scripted sequence. You will see a television set — jump across to the TV to trigger the Astral Plane encounter.
Jesse is waiting here. Follow the linear path inside the Fault and interact with Jesse when prompted. The conversation plays out, and at the end of it, Dylan unlocks the Shift ability.
The Incursion Fault is now complete. You receive Shift, a Living Shard, a Talent Point, and the “Repeating, Refracting” collectible record.

Step 5 — Escape the Parking Garage Using Shift
Unlocking Shift is not quite the end. The garage is now heavily warped, and normal movement will not get you out. You need to use Shift immediately to escape.
Follow the exit signs and navigate the twisting roadways by using Shift to align Dylan with the correct surfaces. The garage inverts and turns as you climb, and you will need to chain gravity shifts through multiple floors while dealing with enemies, including snipers and airborne Hiss.
Keep following the exit signs and the visual cues — falling cars point you in the right direction. Eventually you will land on a sunlit upper deck, and the quest completes. Shift is now permanently available for the rest of the game.
After escaping, you are ready to head back toward the Theater and face The Dancer. Shift is required to cross the warped streets leading to the Theater — without it, that route was a dead end. Check our Dancer boss guide for help with that fight.
What Does Shift Unlock in Control Resonant?
Now that you have Shift, a large portion of Manhattan opens up. Here is what Shift gives you access to:
- The Theater route in the West Incursion Zone — Required to reach and fight The Dancer.
- The Subway Fault — The path into the Evacuation Zone and the next traversal ability (Reach) requires Shift.
- Walls and ceilings with Gravity Anomalies — Many collectibles, secret areas, and chests are only reachable this way.
- Vertical and patterned road surfaces — These are scattered throughout Manhattan and were dead ends before Shift.
The key rule: look for golden leaf-like patterns on a surface. That is the visual indicator for a Gravity Anomaly. Press the Shift button near it, and Dylan snaps onto that surface. Treat it as the new floor and keep moving.
Do not try to read Manhattan like a normal city after unlocking Shift. If a path looks like it ends, look up, sideways, or behind you. A wall you have already passed may be the correct route forward.

Yes. Shift is required to reach The Dancer in the Theater, access the Subway Fault, and progress through several story-critical routes. You cannot complete the West Incursion Zone Resonant without it.
Can I get Shift before doing other story content?
Yes. As soon as you enter the West Incursion Zone after reaching Central, The Incursion Fault quest becomes available. You can complete it before doing anything else in that zone.
