Scenes From A Marriage – Quest Overview
Scenes From A Marriage is one of the longest and most emotionally powerful quests in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It is the third and final main quest tied to Olgierd von Everec’s wishes in the Hearts of Stone expansion. The suggested level is 35, though being level 36 or higher is recommended for the boss fights.
Olgierd’s third wish is simple on paper: retrieve the violet rose he once gave to his wife Iris. In practice, the quest sends Geralt deep into a hauntingly beautiful painted world, through seven locked memories of a marriage that fell apart, and into a confrontation with grief, regret, and a supernatural evil tied to Olgierd’s own choices.
The quest follows Open Sesame! and Dead Man’s Party. After completing it, you move into the final chapter of the Hearts of Stone storyline.
Important preparation tip: You cannot meditate inside the painted world. Stock up on food, potions, and repair kits before you enter. Specter Oil for your Silver Sword is especially important — most enemies in this quest are specters.
Step 1 – Go to the Von Everec Manor
The Von Everec manor is located in Velen, northeast of Oxenfurt. Track the quest and follow the marker.
As you approach the main gate, you will hear a man shouting from a hole in the outer wall. He is a thief whose partner went missing inside. Speak with him and agree to look for his partner — it is a minor side detail with no major consequence, but it sets the atmosphere well.
Enter the courtyard. Use your Witcher Senses to search the grounds. Despite what Olgierd said about the violet rose, you will not simply find one lying around. Clues throughout the yard — an unusually well-maintained garden, strange footprints — hint that something far stranger is going on here.
Step 2 – Follow the Trail to the Back Garden
Head to the front door of the manor and interact with it. A cutscene shows Geralt noticing drag marks and footprints leading toward the back. Open the gate to the back garden.
Inside the back garden, use your Witcher Senses to pick up the trail. You will hear the sound of digging. Follow it. You will also find a lockpick on the ground — a clue about the missing thief.
The trail leads you to the Caretaker.
Before the Caretaker fight: Head to the southeast corner of the garden. Under the remains of a gazebo you will find the Ornamented Brush — one of three items you will need later for Iris’ grave. Pick it up.
Boss Fight 1 – The Caretaker
The Caretaker is a towering undead figure armed with a massive shovel. Do not take this fight lightly — it is one of the trickier early encounters in Hearts of Stone.
Weaknesses: Relict Oil on your Silver Sword. Quen for protection.

Caretaker Attack Patterns
- Overhead shovel swing – The shovel glows before this attack. It hits the ground hard and briefly gets stuck. This is your main window to attack. Get in a few hits before he yanks it free.
- Teal glow in the ground – If the shovel glows teal while stuck, back away immediately to avoid being stunned.
- Charge stab – He may charge toward Geralt and attempt a stabbing thrust with the shovel handle. Dodge sideways to avoid it.
- Healing with spectral minions – When the Caretaker gets low on health, he begins summoning dark spectral figures that walk toward him. If they reach him, they heal him significantly. Kill these minions immediately — they die in one hit. Prioritize them over hitting the Caretaker whenever they appear.
Stay patient. The fight is about reading the shovel glow and killing minions fast. Once the Caretaker falls, you earn 200 XP.
Do not miss: After the fight, pick up The Caretaker’s Spade from his body. It is a unique weapon and one of the most interesting drops in Hearts of Stone.

Step 3 – Explore the Manor and Collect Key Items
After the Caretaker dies, two spirits appear — a cat and a dog. They are the loyal companions of Iris von Everec, and they will guide you through the manor. Follow the open doors and ignore the locked ones.
Item 1: Iris’ Sketchbook
As you follow the open doors inside the manor, you will find Iris’ Sketchbook on a table in one of the early rooms. Pick it up. This is the second of the three grave items.
Boss Fight 2 – The Wraith from the Painting
Head upstairs. In a room near the balcony walkway to the left, you will encounter a Wraith emerging from a painting on the wall. This is Iris’ anguish given form.

How to fight the Wraith:
- Use Yrden to make her corporeal and vulnerable to your Silver Sword.
- Apply Specter Oil to your Silver Sword before the fight.
- When her health drops to a certain point, she will scream and float toward one of the three paintings on the walls. The chosen painting will glow green and she will begin absorbing energy from it to heal.
- Immediately attack the glowing painting — hit it with your sword or blast it with Aard to stop the healing. If you are too slow, she will recover a significant portion of health. Repeat this every time she tries to heal.
- Continue attacking and interrupting her healing attempts until she falls.
With the Wraith dead, continue to the end of the hallway and enter Iris’ bedchamber.
Item 2: Portrait of Iris and Olgierd
Before interacting with Iris’ body, look to the table to the right of the bed. You will find the Portrait of Iris and Olgierd. Pick it up. This is the third grave item.
Now interact with Iris’ body on the bed. You will earn 100 XP. A key is also found — use it to leave the manor through the front door.
Step 4 – Bury Iris and Enter the Painted World
Leave the manor through the front door and head to the front garden. Look for the easel near the northwest area above the stairs. Examine it — a cutscene plays showing Iris’ connection to the estate through her art.
Now you need to bury Iris. Place one of the three items you collected on her grave:
- Ornamented Brush
- Iris’ Sketchbook
- Portrait of Iris and Olgierd
It does not matter which item you choose — all three trigger the next step. Iris will make a different comment depending on your choice, but there is no gameplay consequence. Place whichever item feels right and watch the scene that follows.
Iris appears and pulls Geralt into the Painted World — a surreal dreamlike recreation of the Von Everec estate, built from her memories. You cannot meditate here, so use everything you have left from preparation.

The Painted World – All Memory Puzzle Solutions
Inside the Painted World, you must restore seven memories (eight total, with one optional) to fully awaken Iris. Each memory is a frozen scene with missing elements. Use your Witcher Senses to identify glowing red items and place them in the correct positions. Each completed memory earns 100 XP. Between memories, humanoid specter enemies will periodically attack — kill them quickly and move on.
Memory 1 – Courtyard Gazebo
You start directly in front of a gazebo. Inside, Olgierd and Iris are frozen in a scene of their early romance.
- Interact with the wooden beam near the gazebo entrance to pick up the book The Spirit from the Steppe. Place it in Olgierd’s hand.
- Interact with the bench inside the gazebo to get the Painter’s Palette. Place it on the small wooden table behind Iris.
Memory 2 – Courtyard Fountain
At the fountain in the courtyard, Iris stands with her hand extended.
- Find the Glass sitting on the rim of the fountain.
- Place it in Iris’ extended hand.
Warning: Immediately after completing this memory, Arachnomorph Specters will attack. Be ready. Iris mentioned a fear of spiders earlier — this is why.
Memory 3 – The Dining Hall (First Visit)
The dinner scene shows the family at the table. There are no items to pick up here, but the scene is not in order.
- Look at the painting at the far end of the room to understand what the correct arrangement should look like.
- Light the middle candlesticks.
- Light the candlesticks closest to the dinner guests.
- Light the fireplace.
- Do not light the candlestick furthest from the fireplace — the painting shows it unlit.
- Use Igni to light the candles and fireplace.
Memory 4 – The Bedroom
Olgierd stands in the bedroom opposite a bed. This is a tense memory involving illness.
- Find the Bloody Towel on the floor.
- Place it on the counter beside the wash basin where Olgierd is standing.
Memory 5 – The Painting Studio
Iris is painting in her studio. Olgierd stands beside a table with items that need to be arranged to match her portrait.
- Pick up the Fruit Bowl and the Goblet.
- Look at Iris’ painting on the easel to see the correct arrangement.
- Place the items on the table next to Olgierd exactly as shown in the painting:
Grapes on the left — Goblet in the middle — Apple on the right
Memory 6 – Olgierd’s Study (Pentagram)
This is one of the more complex memories. Olgierd stands in his study with a partially drawn pentagram on the floor. This is the moment he tried to summon Gaunter O’Dimm.
- Use Witcher Senses to find: Piece of Chalk (on a low bookcase) and Beeswax Candles (on Olgierd’s desk near the window).
- You can also find and read the books Between Worlds and Blood Pacts, or On Foreign Presences — they give context to what Olgierd was doing but are not required to solve the puzzle.
- Use the chalk to complete the missing lines of the pentagram automatically.
- Then place the candles. When prompted, choose to place them “on the circle surrounding the pentagram.”
The memory plays out. A fire then breaks out in the study — all doors are locked.
To escape: examine the painting on the wall to the right of the fireplace, which shows the Von Everec estate in winter. Interact with it and jump through — you are teleported outside into a blizzard.
Escaping the Blizzard
You are now in a frozen, blizzard-version of the estate. You need to get back inside. Head west of the manor’s main entrance to find the cellar entrance. It will be highlighted once you get close enough. Enter it.
Memory 7 – The Cellar (Marriage Contract Argument)
Inside the cellar, you find Iris, Olgierd, and Iris’ father frozen in a bitter confrontation about the marriage contract.
- Find and pick up the Marriage Contract and the Mug from the floor. There is also a Pipe — ignore it, it is a decoy and does nothing.
- Place the Marriage Contract in Iris’ father’s hands.
- Place the Mug in Olgierd’s hand.
Memory 8 – The Dining Hall (Final, Optional)
This is the eighth and optional memory — completing it unlocks the Curator of Nightmares achievement. It shows a lonely dinner with the pets.
- Find the Food Tray, the Large Bowl, and the Small Bowl.
- Place the Food Tray in the Caretaker’s hands.
- Place the Large Bowl next to the dog.
- Place the Small Bowl next to the cat.
This memory is not required to progress but gives powerful emotional context and unlocks an achievement.
Step 5 – Enter the Parlor and Face Iris’ Greatest Fear

After completing the required memories, you are invited into the parlor. Inspect the letter on the table inside. This triggers the final boss encounter of the quest.
Heal up and prepare before reading the letter. You cannot meditate. Eat food, check your potions, and make sure your Silver Sword has Specter Oil applied.
Boss Fight 3 – Iris’ Greatest Fear (Olgierd Specters)
Iris’ greatest fear manifests as six ethereal versions of Olgierd. These are Specters, so Specter Oil on your Silver Sword is essential.
Suggested level: 35 and above. This fight at lower levels is significantly harder.
Preparation
- Apply Specter Oil to your Silver Sword — these enemies are in the Specter category.
- Drink Blizzard Potion if you have it — the slow-motion effect helps with the fast attacks.
- Use Ekhidna Decoction if available — it restores Vitality when you consume Stamina through Signs or dodging.
- Prepare Quen as your default sign — it absorbs the first hit each time you cast it.
Fight Strategy
- All six Olgierd specters appear at once, but only fight one at a time. Pull one away from the group and focus it down before engaging the next.
- If you try to fight multiple at once, you will quickly be overwhelmed. Patience is the key.
- Use Yrden to slow them and create openings for sword strikes.
- Dodge and evade rather than parry — their attacks are fast and parrying risks getting clipped by a second specter nearby.
- Do not get cornered. Keep moving and keep the group separated.
After all six phantoms are defeated, a scene plays and Geralt finally gets to meet Iris — not as a wraith or a corpse, but as herself.
The Final Choice – Take the Rose or Leave It?
Iris appears holding the violet rose that Olgierd gave her. She is calm and at peace after Geralt helped her relive her memories. You must now decide what to do.
Option 1: Take the Rose
Ask Iris directly: “Can you give me the rose?” She gives it to you willingly. The painted world begins to crumble. You must exit quickly — run out before it fully collapses.
Iris and the painted world cease to exist. The cat and dog are freed from their eternal servitude. Before you leave, the dog gives you a vital hint for facing Gaunter O’Dimm in the final quest: “Seek salvation in glass that can’t be broken.” Remember this.
Option 2: Leave the Rose with Iris
Ask about the rose first — “The rose — more than a memento, isn’t it?” — and then choose to let her keep it. Iris returns to an eternal sleep. The painted world and the cat and dog continue on as before, bound to the estate forever.
When you return to the real world, the painting in the front garden has changed — Iris now holds the violet rose in the image. Cut out that section of the painting to receive a Painting of Iris Holding a Violet Rose. This works exactly as well as the physical rose for delivering to Olgierd.
Best Choice
Take the rose. Iris is already dead. She willingly hands it over, which is itself a moment of grace — she is no longer a prisoner to Olgierd or to the painted world. The cat and dog are freed. And the dog’s parting words give you a real gameplay advantage when facing Gaunter O’Dimm. Leaving the rose keeps Iris, the animals, and all the sadness trapped forever. The kinder ending for everyone involved is to take the rose and let them go.
Step 6 – Deliver the Rose to Olgierd
After leaving the painted world, exit the estate grounds through the broken wall to the right of the main gate where you first met the thief. Take the violet rose to Olgierd von Everec to complete his third and final wish. This earns 250 XP and triggers the final stage of the Hearts of Stone main story.

- The Caretaker’s Spade – Pick it up from the Caretaker’s body immediately after the fight. It is a unique weapon and easy to miss if you get swept up in the next cutscene.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I take the rose or leave it with Iris in Scenes From A Marriage?
Take the rose. Iris willingly gives it to you, showing she is at peace. Taking it frees her spirit, frees the cat and dog, and the dog gives you a helpful hint for fighting Gaunter O’Dimm: “Seek salvation in glass that can’t be broken.” Leaving the rose keeps everyone trapped in the painted world forever. Both choices complete the quest and satisfy Olgierd’s wish.
How do I beat the Caretaker in Witcher 3?
Apply Relict Oil to your Silver Sword and use Quen for protection. Watch for the shovel to glow — this signals an overhead swing that gets the shovel stuck in the ground. That brief moment when the shovel is stuck is your main attack window. When the Caretaker summons dark spectral minions, kill them immediately with a single hit each — they heal the Caretaker if they reach him. Repeat until he falls.
How do I stop the Wraith from healing in Scenes From A Marriage?
When the Wraith floats toward a painting on the wall and it glows green, immediately attack that painting — hit it with your sword or use Aard to blast it. This interrupts her healing. If you are too slow she recovers significantly. Use Yrden to make her vulnerable and Specter Oil on your Silver Sword for bonus damage.
How do I solve the pentagram puzzle in Olgierd’s study?
Pick up the Piece of Chalk from the low bookcase and the Beeswax Candles from Olgierd’s desk. Use the chalk to complete the missing pentagram lines automatically. Then when asked where to place the candles, choose: “on the circle surrounding the pentagram.” After the memory plays, the study catches fire. Escape by jumping into the winter painting on the wall to the right of the fireplace.
How do I escape the blizzard after the study fire?
You are transported outside into a frozen version of the estate. Head west of the manor’s main entrance to find the cellar entrance. Enter it to continue into the next memory — the cellar scene with the marriage contract argument.
What is the optional eighth memory in the Painted World?
The eighth memory is the lonely dinner in the dining hall — a scene showing Iris dining alone with just her pets and the Caretaker for company. To solve it, place the Food Tray in the Caretaker’s hands, the Large Bowl next to the dog, and the Small Bowl next to the cat. Completing this memory unlocks the Curator of Nightmares achievement.
How do I beat Iris’ Greatest Fear?
Apply Specter Oil to your Silver Sword before the fight. Six ethereal Olgierd specters appear — fight them one at a time by pulling a single enemy away from the group. Use Yrden to slow them and Quen to absorb hits. Do not try to fight multiple specters at once. Drink Blizzard Potion if available for the slow-down effect. Ekhidna Decoction helps recover health while dodging and signing.
What are the three grave items and which should I pick?
The three items are the Ornamented Brush (from the garden gazebo), Iris’ Sketchbook (from inside the manor), and the Portrait of Iris and Olgierd (from the bedchamber). You only need to place one on Iris’ grave to summon her. All three work identically. Iris makes a slightly different comment depending on which item you choose, but there is no gameplay difference.
