TL;DR
- The Deserter is the Central Zone Resonant, hiding at the bottom of the Patterned Factory.
- To reach him, you must break three heat growths on the underground pipes first.
- No traversal ability needed — just clear enemies and follow the route down.
- The Deserter uses lava spew, pipe stabs, fireballs, and a body slam that exposes a purple weak point.
- At one-third health, purple sacs appear and he starts healing — stop attacking the boss and destroy every sac immediately.
- Reward is a choice between Ignite (fire enchant on existing abilities) or Inferno (standalone fire wave).
- Best pick for most players: Ignite. Best if you want one easy fire button: Inferno.
The Deserter is the first boss in Control Resonant that actively fights the arena against you. The floor burns, his attacks leave fire patches everywhere, and if you ignore those purple sacs when they appear, he just heals everything back. Once you understand the loop though, this fight is very manageable. This guide walks through the factory route, every attack, and the healing phase mechanic that trips up most players.

Where To Find The Deserter in Control Resonant
The Deserter is the Resonant boss for the Central Zone. He lives at the bottom of the Patterned Factory, which sits in the north of the Central area. From the Field Office, head north along the map until you reach the factory building. You will find a “Report Patterned Pipes” prompt on the pipes outside the south entrance wall. Interact with it to add The Central Resonant to your quest log and mark the route ahead on the map.
The boss door sits inside a furnace room at the very bottom of the factory. You cannot just walk in — you need to work through a short dungeon first. The next two sections cover that route step by step.
Important note before you enter: Beating The Deserter advances the Resonant Cycle, which respawns harder enemies across all of Manhattan. Clear any side content and quests you want to finish in the Central Zone first. How To Enter The Patterned Factory
There are two ways into the factory, and you only need one of them:
- Front entrance: Follow the yellow conductive structure outside to power the front door. This is the most straightforward entry.
- Roof entrance: Climb the platforms on the east side of the building, break the wooden door on the roof, and drop inside from above.
Once inside, clear the enemies on the factory floor. Then look for the red cargo lift. Take it down — the underground pipe area is where all three heat growths are. Do not try to find them on the main factory floor; they are all below.

How To Break The Three Heat Growths
The furnace room and the boss arena behind it are completely blocked until you destroy three glowing heat growths on the underground pipework. Break all three in any order — there is no sequence requirement. Here is where each one is:
- Growth 1 — Main hall riser: The first growth clings to the large vertical pipe riser in the underground main hall, near the bottom of the long staircase. Hard to miss.
- Growth 2 — Red side room: Take one of the side branches and look up. The second growth is attached to the overhead pipe in the red-lit side room.
- Growth 3 — Far branch arch: Follow the other side branch to its end. The third growth blocks the path in front of a round arch at the far end.
When you destroy the third growth, your objective updates to “Go Deeper Into the Furnace Room.” Head back to the now-cleared furnace entrance, follow the stairs down, and the boss intro cutscene begins as you approach.
Do not confuse these heat growths with the purple sacs that appear during the boss fight. They look different and serve different purposes. The growths are route blockers. The sacs are a fight mechanic. More on those below.
What To Equip Before Fighting The Deserter
The Deserter fight is heavily fire and environment themed, so a couple of specific items make a noticeable difference:
- Badge 11-60 Artifact: This reduces damage taken from environmental hazards. Since The Deserter constantly lights the floor on fire, this badge pays for itself throughout the entire fight. Equip it if you have it.
- Extended Rush Talent: Makes your Rush ability last three times longer. More distance per dash when a burning floor panel lights up under you — very helpful in the late phase of the fight.
- Highest Falter weapon: A hammer-type Crush form is the reliable default. Falter speeds up execution windows and matters on every Resonant.
One thing worth noting: fire-based Combat Abilities like Ignite and Inferno are often recommended for this fight. They are not available before it — they are the reward for winning. Go in with what you already have. For more on managing your loadout and stats, see our guide on how to respec in Control Resonant.
The Deserter: All Attacks and How To Respond
The Deserter rarely chases you directly. He controls the arena instead — burning the floor, shooting lava, and slowly cornering you into bad positions. Your core loop is to keep moving sideways along the edge of the arena, punish him when he exposes the weak point, and never stay in one spot.
Attack 1: Lava Spew
This is usually the first thing he does when the fight starts. A stream of molten rock tracks your position along the ground as you move. The counter is simple: run perpendicular to the stream — directly sideways. The lava tracks slowly and pure sideways movement outpaces it completely. Watch the burning patches it leaves on the floor and avoid standing in them afterward.
Attack 2: Body Slam and Purple Weak Point
This is your main punish window. The Deserter rears up before slamming his entire body forward. When you see him rear up, move out of the impact line. As he lands, a purple weak point appears on his chest and neck. That spot takes real damage — attack it as fast as possible before it folds back in. He will not expose the weak point on every slam, so treat each visible window as a bonus opportunity rather than your main plan.
Attack 3: Pipe Stab
The pipes directly in front of him start glowing. They then stab straight down into the ground in a line in front of his face. The fix is easy: stop fighting from his front arc when the pipes start glowing and move to either flank. Get back in after the stab lands.
Attack 4: Fireballs
He hurls large fireballs at you one at a time from range. Each one creates a burning landing zone on the ground. Keep moving and watch the ground markers, not the boss. The projectiles are slow enough that basic sideways movement avoids them. The real danger is standing in the leftover fire patches while also dealing with other attacks.
Attack 5: Burning Floor (Late Fight)
In the later sections of the fight, the floor panels under your melee range start glowing and breathing fire. This is the arena punishing you for standing still during combos. Swap to short two-or-three-hit bursts, then jump or Rush out before the panel fully ignites under you. Do not try to finish long combo strings once the floor starts burning this way.
How To Stop The Deserter From Healing — The Most Important Mechanic
This is the moment that catches most players completely off guard the first time. At roughly one-third of his health, The Deserter steps back, four purple sacs rise around the edges of the arena, and the floor pipes erupt in flames. While the sacs are standing, his health bar visibly climbs back up.
The rule is simple: the moment this starts, stop attacking the boss entirely.
Run the arena edge and destroy every sac as fast as you can. Each broken sac turns off its connected fire line and knocks a chunk of regained health back down. If you let them stand and keep hitting The Deserter, you are just undoing your own progress. All four sacs must be destroyed before you go back to the boss.
Once all four are gone, the healing stops, the extra fire lines shut off, and the fight returns to the normal punish loop. The Deserter has no new mechanics after this phase. Just finish him off.
The Deserter Rewards: Ignite or Inferno?
After beating The Deserter you choose one of two fire-based Combat Abilities in The Gap. Here is what each one does:
Ignite
Ignite adds fire damage and Burn buildup to your existing tools — melee, Barrage, Shield Bash, and Volatile Anomaly all gain fire damage while Ignite is active. It drains Power continuously while running. Think of it as a toggle that turns your current loop into a fire build. If you fight often and keep Power topped up with melee, Ignite pays off on every single hit you land.
Inferno
Inferno is a standalone fire wave — one button fires a burst of flames that hits enemies and builds Burn. It costs a flat 200 Power each cast with no upkeep drain. It is simpler, more predictable, and easier to use in chaotic fights. You do not need to manage a toggle — just cast it when you have Power and enemies are close.
Which One Should You Pick?
- Ignite — Best if you fight aggressively in melee and already use Barrage or Volatile Anomaly consistently. It multiplies your existing playstyle.
- Inferno — Best if you want a simple, one-button fire option with no upkeep to manage.
Both abilities are especially strong in The Park zone, which is full of Mold enemies that are weak to fire. Whichever you pick, it will be immediately useful in the next part of the game. If you change your mind later, a Reset Item from any vendor (5,000 Source) lets you reassign Combat Abilities in The Gap.
What Happens After You Beat The Deserter?
Beating The Deserter closes out the Central Resonant quest entry, unlocks the Thermal Termination trophy, and advances the Resonant Cycle. Tougher enemies and new enemy types will now appear across Manhattan.
With fire abilities now in hand, The Park zone becomes much more manageable. The Mold enemies there are heavily weak to fire, and The Collective boss fight is much easier with Ignite or Inferno equipped.
