TL;DR
- The Duskwood Checker puzzle is at the Duskwood Waterside Ruins — located west of Hernand City, just past the Kilnden Workshop
- You control both black and white pieces freely — this is not a normal checkers game
- Goal: align any five pieces of the same color in a row — horizontal, vertical, or diagonal
- Fastest solution: find the hidden white piece next to the Abyss Cresset and place it between the two existing white pieces to form a horizontal line of five
- To move a piece: walk up to it, grab it, carry it to the target spot, then hold Place and press Drop
- Completing the puzzle unlocks the Abyss Cresset and rewards an Abyss Artifact
- This puzzle is labeled as a Mysterious Energy point on your map — look for the fog of war question mark icon
The Duskwood Checker puzzle at the Waterside Ruins in Crimson Desert throws most players off immediately. It looks like a standard board game at first glance, but then you realize you can move both the black and white pieces yourself. There are no turns, no rules about jumping — just a grid and a goal.
Once you understand what the puzzle is actually asking, the solution takes under a minute.
Where to Find the Duskwood Waterside Ruins
The Duskwood Waterside Ruins sit near a river in Duskwood, positioned between a cave to the east and the Kilnden Workshop to the east as well. The fastest way to reach it depends on where you’re coming from:

From the Kilnden Workshop Abyss Nexus: Fast travel to the workshop, then head west and follow the stream until you hit a clearing with the marble ruin structures.
From the cave Abyss Nexus: Fast travel there and head east instead.
On your map, the location is marked as a Mysterious Energy icon — the same fog of war marker with a question mark that all Ancient Ruins and Secret Places use. If you see a Mysterious Whisper marked nearby, use your Blinding Flash skill and follow the glint to locate the ruins precisely.
The ruins themselves are hard to miss once you’re close. You’ll see a large grid of raised stone slabs with black and white checker pieces sitting on top, right next to an Abyss Cresset in the corner.
While you’re in the Duskwood region, the Kilnden Workshop quest guide is also worth completing nearby for additional rewards.
Understanding the Puzzle
This is not a standard game of checkers. Here’s what makes it different:
- You control both the black and white pieces — there are no turns and no opponent
- You can move any piece to any empty spot on the grid
- The goal is to get five pieces of the same color lined up in a row — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally
- It doesn’t matter which color you use — five whites or five blacks both count
The confusion most players have is thinking they need to follow checkers rules. You don’t. Just treat it like a placement puzzle where you’re arranging pieces freely until five of one color line up.

Fastest Solution: The Hidden White Piece
This is the quickest way to finish the puzzle in the fewest possible moves.
Step 1: Look around the area near the Abyss Cresset in the corner of the ruins. There is a hidden white piece sitting off to the side, not on the main grid. It’s easy to miss since it blends into the environment.
Step 2: Look at the white pieces already placed on the grid. You’ll notice two white pieces that are close together with a gap between them.
Step 3: Pick up the hidden white piece and place it in the gap between the two existing white pieces. This creates a horizontal line of five white pieces in a row.
Done. The puzzle completes immediately.
How to Move the Checker Pieces
If you haven’t moved pieces in this type of puzzle before, here’s exactly how it works:
- Walk up to the piece you want to move
- Grab it using the interact button
- Carry it to the spot you want to place it
- Hold the Place button to position it — you’ll see a preview of where it will land
- When you’re happy with the position, press Drop to place it
The piece snaps into the nearest grid square when dropped. If you’re not happy with the placement, just grab it again and reposition.

Alternative Solution: Five-Piece Diagonal Line
If the hidden piece near the Abyss Cresset isn’t in its default position for some reason — or if you’ve already moved pieces around — you can solve it a different way.
Rearrange the white pieces into a diagonal line of five. This requires moving more pieces across the board and takes significantly longer than the horizontal shortcut above.
Unless you’ve already scrambled the board before reading this, stick with the hidden piece method. It’s faster and requires only one move.
What Happens When You Complete the Puzzle
Once five pieces are aligned, the Abyss Cresset activates. Walk over to it and interact with it to claim the Abyss Artifact inside.
This is the same reward structure as every other Ancient Ruins puzzle in Crimson Desert — solve a unique environmental challenge, unlock the Cresset, collect the Artifact. How to Spend Your Abyss Artifact
Now that you’ve got a new Artifact, here are the best ways to put it to work:
Invest in Health or Stamina early. If you’re still in the first few chapters, raw survivability matters more than fancy combat skills. Both stats directly affect how long you last in tough fights.
Unlock key combat skills. If your stats are already solid, skills like Keen Senses, Nature’s Echo, and Armed Combat provide the best offensive return. See the best skills to level up first guide for the full priority breakdown.
Check your current build. The best early build guide maps out how to spend your first several Artifacts to maximize early game performance across armor, weapons, and skills.
