Crimson Desert Drain Water Puzzle Guide: How to Use Nature’s Snare and Solve Every Water Puzzle

Can't drain the water in a Crimson Desert puzzle? This guide explains exactly how Nature's Snare works, how to unlock it, and how to handle every water drain puzzle type in the game.

TL;DR

  • Water drain puzzles require the Nature’s Snare skill — you cannot use Axiom Force on the pump mechanisms
  • Nature’s Snare is in the green Spirit section of the skill tree — unlock it with an Abyss Artifact or by observation
  • To use it: press Focus (L3+R3 on controller / X on PC), then spin the right analog stick or mouse in a circle
  • Spirit runs out? No problem — the water stays drained. Use Focus to restore Spirit and pick up where you left off
  • Some puzzles have no mechanism — break a wall or crystal instead to create a drain hole
  • Draining the water isn’t always enough — some puzzles like Wiggling Hill Ruins also require you to light lanterns
  • Some locations like Haunted Hill have two mechanisms — activate both to fully drain the water

Water puzzles in Crimson Desert trip up a lot of players. The pump mechanisms don’t respond to Axiom Force, and nothing in the area gives an obvious hint about what to do. The answer is a skill most players haven’t prioritized yet — Nature’s Snare. Once you know how it works, every water drain puzzle in the game becomes straightforward.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Why You Can’t Drain the Water Yet

If you’re standing next to a spinning pump mechanism and nothing is working, you’re probably trying to pull it with Axiom Force. That won’t work. The mechanism doesn’t respond to it.

The only way to activate a water drain pump is with the Nature’s Snare skill. If you haven’t unlocked it yet, that’s why you’re stuck.

What Is Nature’s Snare and How to Unlock It

Nature’s Snare is a Spirit skill in the green branch of Kliff’s skill tree. It lets you interact with natural objects and mechanisms by performing a circular hand motion that generates a spinning force.

You can unlock it two ways:

Option 1 — Abyss Artifact. Open the skill tree, find Nature’s Snare in the green Spirit section (lower-left corner of the Skills menu), and spend an Abyss Artifact to unlock it directly. This is the fastest method.

Option 2 — Observation. You can learn it by observing specific enemies or moments in the world that use a similar motion. This takes longer and isn’t always obvious, so most players skip straight to the Artifact method.

Once you have the skill, here’s exactly how to use it:

  1. Walk up close to the wooden spinning pump mechanism
  2. Press Focus (L3 + R3 on controller / X on PC) to enter Spirit mode
  3. Move the right analog stick in a circular motion (or spin your mouse in a circle on PC)
  4. Kliff will move his hand in a circular pattern — the mechanism will begin to spin
  5. Keep the circular motion going until the water fully drains

Stay back a little. The spinning mechanism has a small hit zone. If you’re standing too close, the spin will knock you back and deal damage. Step a little further away before activating it.

Don’t worry if your Spirit runs out. Nature’s Snare continuously consumes Spirit while active. If you run dry mid-drain, the water level stays exactly where it is. It won’t reset. Just use the Focus skill to restore your Spirit, then resume the circular motion to continue draining from where you left off. You never have to start over.

Types of Water Drain Puzzles in Crimson Desert

Not all water drain puzzles work the same way. Here are the three main types you’ll encounter.

Type 1: Single Mechanism Puzzles

The most common type. One spinning pump sits in or beside the water. Use Nature’s Snare on it and keep going until the water is completely drained. The Abyss Cresset will appear once the area is clear.

Type 2: Multiple Mechanism Puzzles (Haunted Hill Example)

Some puzzles have more than one pump. In the Haunted Hill Ruins, there are two mechanisms that both need to be activated.

Use Nature’s Snare on the first mechanism — the one that’s already above the waterline. This partially drains the pool. Once the water drops, a second mechanism that was previously submerged becomes accessible. Head over to it and use Nature’s Snare again to fully drain the area.

The Abyss Cresset appears once both are done. For a full step-by-step breakdown of this puzzle, see the Hunter’s Cabin Graveyard Puzzle Solution and the surrounding Haunted Hill area guides.

Type 3: No Mechanism — Break the Wall or Crystal

Some water drain puzzles don’t have a pump at all. If you see a flooded area with no spinning mechanism anywhere nearby, look for a breakable wall or crystal.

In one of the Sanctums, you have to use a normal attack to break a wall, shattering the crystal underneath a tower. This creates a hole in the floor that lets the water flow out naturally. No Nature’s Snare needed for that step — just a basic attack.

These puzzles are intentionally designed to make you think differently. If there’s no mechanism, start hitting things.

What to Do If Draining the Water Doesn’t Complete the Puzzle

If you fully drain the water and the puzzle still isn’t marked as complete, you’re not done. There’s always an additional step.

The Wiggling Hill Ruins is a good example. Draining the water around the Abyss Cresset is only part of the solution. You also need to light the lanterns in the area before the puzzle registers as complete.

Whenever a water drain puzzle feels stuck after draining, look around the area for:

  • Unlit lanterns or torches
  • Pillars that need to be raised or aligned
  • Objects that need to be moved with Axiom Force
  • Levers or interactables that only become visible once the water is gone

Always explore the full area after draining. Something nearby will reveal the next step.

For puzzles that combine water draining with pillar mechanics, the Duskwood Ancient Ruins puzzle guide is a good reference for how these layered puzzles work.

Claiming the Abyss Cresset After Draining

Once the puzzle is fully complete, the Abyss Cresset will unlock and appear in the area. Walk up to it and interact with it to claim the Abyss Artifact inside.

These Artifacts are your primary way of unlocking and upgrading skills. Spend them wisely. Our best early build guide has recommendations on where to put your first several Artifacts for maximum early game impact.

Managing Your Spirit During Long Drains

Spirit is the main resource for Nature’s Snare. Here are a few tips to manage it efficiently:

Don’t panic when Spirit runs low. Stop the circular motion, press Focus to restore Spirit quickly, then continue. The drain progress is saved permanently.

Level up Stamina and Spirit regeneration. Accessories provide passive Spirit and Stamina regeneration. Fill all five accessory slots — one necklace, two rings, and two earrings — to boost your regen passively throughout every puzzle. Even basic accessories from early in the game help.

Stand at the right distance. Being too close wastes Spirit from the damage knockback. Being too far may make the skill less effective. Find the sweet spot just outside the mechanism’s spin radius.

Other Puzzle Types in Crimson Desert

Water draining is one of several puzzle mechanics in the game. Here are guides for other puzzle types you’ll encounter:

Quick Recap

Water drain puzzles in Crimson Desert always need Nature’s Snare — unless there’s no pump, in which case you break a wall or crystal. Unlock the skill from the green Spirit section of the skill tree using an Abyss Artifact. Press Focus, spin the right stick or mouse, and hold it until the water drops. Spirit runs out? Just restore it and keep going — the water level never resets. And if the puzzle still isn’t complete after draining, look around for lanterns, pillars, or hidden interactables nearby.
