Changing Pet Names in Crimson Desert was not possible at launch — every animal you tamed was stuck with a bland default label like “White Dog” or “Ashen Cat”. That changed with Patch 1.04, released in April 2026, which added a long-requested feature: the ability to rename your pets and horses whenever you like. Can You Change Pet Names in Crimson Desert?
Yes — but only after Patch 1.04. At launch, there was no rename option anywhere in the game. The pet menu, inventory, and shops all had nothing. Once you adopted an animal, its default name was locked in permanently.
Pearl Abyss added renaming as a quality-of-life improvement in the April 2026 update. The same patch also made the Abyss Heuklang tameable as a proper pet, added five new cat breeds, and introduced tameable birds to the game. If you have not updated to Patch 1.04 or later, you will not see the rename option.
How to Change Pet Names in Crimson Desert
Renaming a pet is done entirely through your Inventory. You do not need to visit any NPC, spend any currency, or unlock anything first. Here are the steps:
Step 1 — Open Your Inventory
Press Start / Options on controller, or I on keyboard, to open your Inventory.
Step 2 — Go to the Pets Tab
Press R2 on PlayStation, RT on Xbox, or navigate manually to switch to the Pets tab inside your Inventory.
Step 3 — Select Your Pet
Highlight the pet you want to rename. You can do this for any tamed companion — cats, dogs, birds, and special pets alike.
Step 4 — Press the Rename Button
Press R3 (click the right stick) on controller, or press G on keyboard. This opens the name input field.
Step 5 — Type the New Name
Enter your chosen name. It must be:
- No more than 15 characters long
- No symbols — letters and numbers only
There is no profanity filter in the game, since Crimson Desert is primarily a single-player experience.
Step 6 — Confirm the Change
Confirm the new name. Your pet will now display its new name going forward. The change takes effect immediately.
You can repeat this process as many times as you want. Renaming is free with no limit on how often you do it.

How to Rename a Horse in Crimson Desert
Renaming a horse works differently from renaming a pet. You cannot do it from the Inventory menu. Instead, you need to visit a Stablemaster NPC.
How to Change a Horse’s Name
- Travel to a Stablemaster NPC. The first stable is located south of Hernand Town, just outside the city walls.
- If you have progressed the Greymane faction quests far enough, Stablemaster Ed will already be at your camp. You can also use Merton to the north.
- Interact with the Stablemaster and select Manage Horses.
- Select the horse you want to rename from your stable list.
- Choose Change Name — the default hotkey on PC is G.
- Type in the new name and confirm.
Just like pets, renaming a horse is completely free and can be done at any time, as often as you want. This works for every horse in your stable — including legendary mounts.

What Pets Can Be Renamed?
All registered pets in your collection can be renamed, including:

Why Could You Not Rename Pets Before Patch 1.04?
At launch, every pet name was hard-coded and read directly from the game’s localisation files. The name field was not editable by players. Pearl Abyss converted the name field to a user-writable value with Patch 1.04, allowing a custom name to be stored in your save file and displayed in place of the default.
The community had been asking for this feature since the game launched. It was one of the most common requests on the Steam forums, alongside the request to make the Abyss Heuklang tameable — both of which were addressed in the same update.

- Keep names under 15 characters — longer ideas will need shortening
