How to Farm Golden Apples in Crimson Desert

Learn how to farm Golden Apples in Crimson Desert. Find the Grey Rock Dock hedgehog spawn location, how to collect them without a bounty, unlock the Gold Bar recipe, and turn them into Silver fast.

TL;DR

  • Golden Apples are carried by hedgehogs — spotted by a golden glow on their backs
  • Best farming location is Grey Rock Dock, northwest of Demeniss near the Grey Rock Quarry outpost
  • Best spawn window is 4 AM to 11 AM in-game time (also reported good between 11 AM and 6 PM)
  • You must equip a Mask to pick up the apple — it counts as theft even after killing the hedgehog
  • Kill the hedgehog with an arrow or pick it up, throw it, and shoot while it’s stunned
  • Run out of the red zone immediately after looting to avoid a bounty
  • Sell directly for 114 Silver each, or craft into Gold Bars (1 Golden Apple + 3 Gold Ore = 1 Gold Bar worth 500 Silver)
  • Unlock the Gold Bar recipe at the Witch’s Hideout in Pailune before farming

Golden Apples were one of Crimson Desert’s most talked-about secrets — the community took three full weeks after launch to locate them. Now that the spot is known, this is one of the cleanest and most repeatable ways to generate Gold Bars and Silver in the game. This guide covers everything: the exact location, how to collect without getting caught, what to do with the apples, and how to maximize your silver per run.

What Are Golden Apples?

Golden Apples grow on invisible trees that only hedgehogs can see. You can’t find the trees yourself — you have to find the hedgehogs that are carrying the apples. When a hedgehog is carrying one, you’ll spot a bright golden shimmer or glow on its back. That glowing hedgehog is your target.

What they’re used for:

  • Sell directly to any vendor for 114 Silver each
  • Craft into Gold Bars at any Witch: 1 Golden Apple + 3 Gold Ore = 1 Gold Bar (worth 500 Silver at the bank)

Selling them raw is a poor use. The real value is the Gold Bar conversion. A Gold Bar deposited at the Hernand Bank counts as a 500 Silver investment and generates passive silver through interest — a much better return than the 114 Silver from a direct sale. See our how to get gold bars guide and how to make money fast guide for more on the full economy system.

What You Need Before Farming

A Mask. This is the single most important prep step. Picking up a Golden Apple counts as theft in Crimson Desert — even after you’ve killed the hedgehog and the apple is lying on the ground. Without a Mask equipped, you cannot interact with it at all. Buy one from any Back Alley Merchant before heading to the farm spot. Our how to pickpocket guide has more on the Mask system.

A bow and arrows. You’ll need to kill hedgehogs at range or shoot the apple off their backs. Keep your bow equipped and stocked throughout the run. Hedgehogs are small, fast, and bolt into bushes fast — having your bow ready prevents missed opportunities.

The Gold Bar recipe (optional but recommended). You need the Alchemy Recipe: Gold Bar to turn your apples into bars at a Witch. The recipe is found at the Witch’s Hideout in Pailune — enter the hideout, go to the right where the recipes are kept, and look on the back shelf using your lantern to find it. It’s easy to miss if you don’t shine the lantern on the shelves. Once learned, it unlocks at any Witch under the Craft Abyss Gear → Special Items tab.

Gold Ore stock. If you plan to craft Gold Bars immediately after your run, have Gold Ore ready in your inventory. The Anvil Hill Cave in southwest Demeniss is a reliable early source — the entrance is in a chasm blocked by a boulder you can remove with Force Palm. One run through Anvil Hill yields enough ore for multiple bars. Our how to get gold ore guide has every mining location.

Where to Farm Golden Apples

The best farming location is Grey Rock Dock, situated northwest of Demeniss along the river that borders Hernand and Demeniss. It sits roughly in the triangle between those two regions and Pailune.

Getting there: From the Kingshield Mountains, head southwest along the path toward the dock. Alternatively, approach from Demeniss and follow the river northwest.

Liberating the area first: Grey Rock Dock and the nearby Grey Rock Quarry are initially controlled by Fundamentalist Goblins. Clear these strongholds before farming. Once liberated, you can run laps without being attacked, which dramatically speeds up the process.

Positioning: Stand near the corner of the house at the dock where pumpkins grow on the ground. This is the most consistent hedgehog spawn point. Reports indicate hedgehogs reliably appear right in front of this location among the pumpkins. From here you have line of sight up the path that leads north toward the bridge.

The Farming Route

Once you’re in position, here’s the loop:

Step 1 – Spot the golden glow

Look at ground level — hedgehogs are small and easy to miss. The golden glow on a carrier’s back is the main visual cue. Angle your camera slightly downward and scan slowly. Walking instead of running reportedly triggers spawns more consistently than sprinting past.

Step 2 – Kill or stun the hedgehog

Two methods work:

Arrow method (faster): Simply shoot the hedgehog with your bow. It drops the Golden Apple on death. No bounty for killing it — hedgehogs are wild animals, not owned property. The apple on the ground is what triggers the theft mechanic, not the kill itself.

Pick up and stun method (works without Focused Shot): Pick the hedgehog up by hand and throw it onto the ground. It stays still for a few seconds. Draw your bow and shoot it during that window. This is slower but works if your aim isn’t reliable on the moving target.

Focused Shot tip: If you have Concentration Level 2 and Archery Level 2 in the skill tree, you unlock Focused Shot. This slows time while aiming, making it dramatically easier to hit the small, fast hedgehogs consistently. It’s worth investing in if you plan to do regular farm runs.

Step 3 – Equip your Mask and steal the apple

Before touching the apple, make sure your Mask is equipped. Approach the dropped apple, shine your lantern on it, and pick it up. A red circle will appear around you the moment you grab it — this is the theft alert zone.

Step 4 – Run out of the red zone immediately

Sprint out of the red radius as fast as possible. The circle dissipates quickly once you’re outside it. Don’t linger. If NPCs catch you inside the red zone, you risk a bounty or arrest. Getting caught also costs you your Mask, so staying clean matters. If you want to know how to clear a bounty if things go wrong, see our how to remove bounty guide.

Step 5 – Reset the route

Walk the path north from the house toward the bridge. Check for hedgehogs along the way — some runs produce one apple, some produce two or three depending on spawn luck. If you reach the northernmost bridge with no more hedgehogs spotted, turn around and walk back to the starting point. The hedgehogs respawn quickly on this loop without needing to fast travel or reload. A round trip to the nearest Abyss Nexus also resets spawns if the loop feels slow.

Best Time to Farm

Hedgehog spawn rates vary by in-game time. There are two reported windows:

  • 4 AM to 11 AM in-game: The most reliable window according to community testing — spawns are more active and consistent
  • 11 AM to 6 PM in-game: Also productive, with multiple confirmed apple finds per run in this window

You can change the in-game time by resting at a bed or bonfire. Check our how to change time of day guide to skip to the right hour before starting your run. Farming outside these windows still works but spawn density is lower.

What to Do With Your Golden Apples

Option 1 – Sell directly (fast but inefficient)

Any vendor buys Golden Apples for 114 Silver each. This is quick and easy but wastes most of the item’s value.

Option 2 – Craft into Gold Bars (recommended)

Visit any Witch with crafting services. Select Craft Abyss Gear, then navigate to the Special Items tab (press R2/RT). Choose Gold Bar. Each craft costs 1 Golden Apple and 3 Gold Ore and produces 1 Gold Bar.

Gold Bars are worth 500 Silver at the bank — more than four times the direct sale value of a single apple. In a 15–20 minute farming session, experienced players collect around 8–10 apples, which converts to 4,000–5,000 Silver worth of Gold Bars using stored Gold Ore. Even at 8 bars per hour this is one of the most efficient silver generation methods available without requiring any story gates or boss fights.

Once you have Gold Bars: Take them to the Hernand Bank. Open a Personal Strongbox (costs 100 Silver). Deposit your Gold Bars — each one counts as a 500 Silver investment. Select your investment risk level. Medium Risk is the community-recommended starting point. Your investment generates passive silver income over time, creating a money loop that runs even while you’re doing other things in the game.

Alternative Way to Get Golden Apples

Aside from hedgehog farming, you can receive Golden Apples as a gift by raising a Witch NPC’s trust level to 100. Bari, Sylvia, Elowen, Areciel, Lyselia, and others can all reward Golden Apples at max trust. A white-dot Witch NPC near the quarry in Hernand is one confirmed source. This is not a farming method but it’s a reliable way to get your first Golden Apple early without having to locate hedgehogs. Note that some Witch NPCs reportedly disappear after reaching 100 trust due to a bug — interact with them as soon as you see the opportunity.

Tips for Efficient Runs

Keep Gold Ore pre-stocked. Don’t interrupt your farming runs to go mine ore. Mine a batch from Anvil Hill Cave beforehand, then farm apples and craft bars in the same session without backtracking.

Bring a pet. A dog companion automatically picks up nearby dropped items, which saves time looting each apple off the ground after the hedgehog dies. See our how to get a pet guide for how to unlock one.

Don’t use Focus Light while farming. Focus Light covers a large area and can accidentally trigger attacks on nearby NPCs, which causes bounties. Use your regular lantern instead to spot what NPCs and animals are carrying.

Liberate Grey Rock Quarry too. The nearby quarry is also a stronghold. Clearing both the dock and the quarry removes all hostile NPC presence from the farming area, letting you run the loop without interruptions.

Stack the farm with pickpocketing. If you’re already wearing the Mask for apple collection, consider swinging through Demeniss Wildlife Park on your way back to the Witch. Nobles there carry a small chance of having full Gold Bars on their persons. Shine your lantern as you walk among them to spot who’s carrying one. Our how to pickpocket guide and how to get gold bars guide cover the full method.
