TL;DR
- Red Rage is a one-handed sword found inside Ancient Mine Site Ruins III in the City of Pailune
- Enter the city center, find the mineshaft near a white tent in the north, and follow the linear path to the chest
- No boss fight, no puzzle — just reach the chest and loot it
- Pailune is hostile Black Bear territory before Chapter 7 — safer to grab after that chapter
- Fully upgraded: 31 Attack and Critical Rate Level 4
- Comes with 3 Abyss Gear slots — ideal for stacking more crit or offensive gears
- Lore item: Ludvig’s personal sword, crafted for dual-wielding
Red Rage is one of those weapons the game hides in plain sight. It sits in a mineshaft right inside the City of Pailune with no quest pointing to it and no boss blocking it — just a chest at the end of a short linear tunnel. The catch is that Pailune is a dangerous region controlled by hostile Black Bears until Chapter 7. If you can get there, the sword is yours for the taking.
What Is Red Rage?
Red Rage is a unique one-handed sword in Crimson Desert. In lore, it’s Ludvig’s personal blade — crafted specifically for dual-wielding, lightweight despite its reputation. The in-game description notes that for a weapon steeped in blood and betrayal, it looks surprisingly modest.
What it’s actually known for in gameplay is its strong Critical Rate scaling, which makes it one of the better one-handed swords for crit-focused builds in the mid-game.
Base stats:
- Type: One-Handed Sword
- Attack: Scales up to 31 at full upgrade
- Critical Rate: Level 4 at full upgrade
- Abyss Gear Slots: 3
- Sell Price: 8.95 (keep this — don’t sell it)
The Critical Rate Level 4 is the defining stat here. Critical Rate has a chance to double your attack damage on every hit. Stack that with Critical Rate Abyss Gears in the three available slots and accessories that carry Critical Rate, and you have a sword that routinely deals double damage throughout fights. For more on how Critical Rate works and stacks, our critical rate OP boss build breaks it down in full.
Note that one-handed weapons are capped at 3 Abyss Gear slots, compared to 5 on two-handed weapons. If you’re min-maxing endgame, two-handed weapons eventually offer more socket depth. But for dual-wield builds in the mid-game, Red Rage punches well above its weight — especially paired with a second strong one-hander in your off-hand, giving you 6 combined Abyss Gear slots across both weapons.

Where Is Red Rage?
Red Rage is inside Ancient Mine Site Ruins III, located within the City of Pailune in the northern Pailune region. The entrance is a mineshaft found in the northern part of the city center.
Story gate: Pailune is controlled by hostile Black Bears before you complete Chapter 7 of the main story. You can attempt to grab it earlier, but you’ll have to fight or dodge through aggressive enemies to reach the chest. The safer and recommended approach is to return after Chapter 7 when the region becomes non-hostile.
Step-by-Step: How to Get Red Rage
Step 1 – Travel to the City of Pailune
Fast travel to the default Abyss Nexus in Pailune if you have it unlocked. If not, ride north from Hernand and Demeniss through the region until you reach the city. For help navigating the region, see our how to fast travel guide.

Step 2 – Head to the City Center
Enter the City of Pailune and make your way to the center. The mineshaft is a short walk north of the default Abyss Nexus fast travel point inside the city.
Step 3 – Find the White Tent and Look West
In the northern part of the city center, look for a white tent. From the tent, look west — you’ll see the entrance to a mineshaft. Bats swarm inside the tunnel entrance, but they’re harmless and won’t stop you. Walk through them.
Step 4 – Follow the Linear Path
Once inside the mineshaft you’re in the Ancient Mine Site Ruins III. The path is completely linear — no puzzles, no branching routes, no enemies blocking the chest. Just run straight through the tunnel.
Step 5 – Open the Treasure Chest
At the end of the path, you’ll find the treasure chest. Interact with it to receive the Red Rage sword. It goes directly into your inventory and you can equip it immediately.
That’s the whole process. No boss kill, no quest requirement, no skill checks. The only barrier is getting to Pailune safely, which Chapter 7 resolves cleanly.
How to Upgrade Red Rage
Red Rage can be refined at any Blacksmith in the game to push its stats higher. Refinement is straightforward — bring the sword and the required ore or materials, and the Blacksmith handles the upgrade. Each refinement tier is shown by golden lines on the weapon’s icon.
For general refinement guidance see our how to upgrade weapons and armor guide and how to reinforce equipment guide.
To push the sword to its full potential alongside refinement, open all three Abyss Gear slots and socket the right gears. Priority options for Red Rage:
- Critical Rate Abyss Gear — stacks on top of the sword’s base crit for a higher combined double-damage chance
- Destruction — flat Attack increase, always useful
- Gale — Attack Speed boost for faster combo chains
- Spirit Siphon — keeps your Spirit pool from running dry during long fights, especially important in boss encounters

Best Builds for Red Rage
Dual-Wield Crit Build
Red Rage was made for dual-wielding — the lore description even says so. Pair it with another solid one-handed sword in your off-hand. Both weapons get their own 3 Abyss Gear slots, giving you 6 combined slots to fill with critical rate and offensive gears. This setup works especially well with Kliff’s dual-wield skill tree. Make sure to invest in Dodge and Counter skills to chain attacks smoothly without taking damage mid-combo. Our how to dual wield guide has full setup details.
One-Handed Sword and Shield Build
If you prefer to run a shield in your off-hand, Red Rage still performs well. The shield provides defensive options while Red Rage’s crit scaling adds burst damage on forward pressure. Pair with the Demeniss Royal Guard Shield or Ancient Shield for solid defensive stats. Our how to flip enemies with a shield guide is also worth reading if you’re going this route.
Critical Rate Stacking
Critical Rate is one of the most important stats in Crimson Desert because it can double every attack’s damage. Red Rage’s Level 4 Critical Rate at full upgrade is a strong baseline. Stack Critical Rate further through accessories — a necklace with Critical Rate Level 2 is internally doubled by the game, effectively giving you Level 4 from that slot alone. The Necklace of Lightning and White Lion Necklace are strong options for crit-focused builds. For the full crit build breakdown, see our critical rate OP boss build guide.
Tips Before You Go
Wait for Chapter 7 if you’re not in a rush. The Black Bears in Pailune before Chapter 7 are aggressive and present throughout the city. If you’re in the area for story reasons and happen to be close, grabbing Red Rage early is doable — just ride fast and don’t engage. But if Pailune isn’t on your route yet, it’s not worth a dedicated trip through hostile territory for the sword alone.
Don’t mistake this for an Ancient Ruins puzzle. The Ancient Mine Site Ruins III name can create confusion — there are many actual puzzle ruins across Pailune that reward Abyss Cressets and Artifacts. Red Rage is in a simple mineshaft chest, not a puzzle. No ability checks, no mechanism to solve.
Bring ice resistance gear if you’re going to Pailune early. The northern region is frigid and cold effects can slow you down and drain health over time without proper gear. Check our ice resistance and frost protection guide before heading north. The Frostcursed Armor Set is a strong option for dealing with the cold.
Explore Pailune while you’re there. The region has several strong unique weapons, armor pieces, and puzzles worth hitting in the same trip. Check our best unique weapons and armor guide and the Chillfallen Sword guide — another strong early-access one-handed sword also found in the Pailune area.
Pair with fire imbue for extra burst. Red Rage’s crit scaling pairs well with elemental imbue setups. Combining high crit chance with fire-imbued attacks and the Volcanic Eruption Abyss Gear in your armor creates a build where each crit hit also triggers fire AoE. The Abyssal Rays guide is also worth checking for another Light Attack proc gear that works well in this setup.
