How to Get Volcanic Eruption Abyss Gear in Crimson Desert
TL;DR
- Volcanic Eruption is an Abyss Gear socketed inside the Scorchflame Plate Gloves
- Get the gloves from the Twilight Grotto, a hidden waterfall cave near Blue Ripple Hearth in western Demeniss — no boss required
- Alternatively defeat Flame Knight Tristan at the Flame Knight’s Castle in western Demeniss (need Chapter 6 complete)
- You can get two copies: one from the cave, one from Tristan
- Requires Flame element and Imbue Element Level 1 or above to trigger
- Extract it from the gloves at a Witch and socket it into your preferred armor or weapon
- Triggers on fire-imbued attacks, shatters a molten boulder and fires four fireballs dealing AoE fire damage to nearby enemies
Volcanic Eruption is one of the most fun Abyss Gears in Crimson Desert. It turns your fire-imbued attacks into area explosions, sending fireballs in all directions and dealing AoE damage to every enemy nearby. If you’re building around fire imbue, this is an essential pickup — and unlike a lot of powerful gear, one of the two methods to get it requires zero boss kills and no story progress at all.

What Is Volcanic Eruption?
Volcanic Eruption is an Abyss Gear that slots into armor sockets. Once embedded and active, it triggers whenever you land an attack imbued with the Flame element. The effect shatters a molten boulder, launching four fireballs outward that deal fire damage to nearby enemies.
Full stats and requirements:
- Effect: Shatters a molten boulder, dealing fire damage to nearby enemies — fires four fireballs on trigger
- Trigger condition: Any attack imbued with the Flame element
- Required skills: Flame element unlocked + Imbue Element Level 1 or above
- Spirit cost: Each trigger consumes additional Spirit on top of normal usage
- Socket type: Armor socket (gloves or other armor pieces)
- Blueprint name: Gear Blueprint: Volcanic Eruption (for crafting)
The gear is found pre-socketed in the Scorchflame Plate Gloves. You don’t wear those gloves forever — you extract Volcanic Eruption and move it to whatever armor piece fits your build best.

Method 1 – Twilight Grotto Waterfall Cave (No Boss Required)
This is the fastest method and available very early. You don’t need to complete any specific story chapter or defeat any boss. The only requirement is having the Stab skill unlocked.
How to Find the Twilight Grotto
The Twilight Grotto is a hidden cave behind a waterfall in western Demeniss, near the landmark called Blue Ripple Hearth, close to the Hernand and Demeniss border.
Step 1 – Travel from Hernand eastward
From Hernand City, head east over Rocker Hills and continue toward the river confluence below the Hills of No Return.
Step 2 – Find the waterfall area
Look for a pond fed by a small waterfall with a natural stone arch nearby. You’ll see a double waterfall on the right side. Below the arch sits a small three-house hamlet. This confirms you’re in the right area.
Step 3 – Spot the cave entrance
Look for a dark crease in the cliff face with water spilling down it. A stack of rocks sits in front of the waterfall entrance — this is the marker for hidden waterfall caves throughout Crimson Desert. The northeast waterfall of the two falls in this area is the correct one.
Step 4 – Use Stab to enter
You cannot walk through the waterfall normally — the current pushes you back. Stand in front of the waterfall and charge up the Stab skill, then release it to punch through the water and enter the cave. On PlayStation, that’s R1 + Triangle. On Xbox, it’s Right Trigger + Y.
Step 5 – Loot the chest
Follow the short tunnel inside. No enemies guard the chest here. At the end of the path, you’ll find a fancy-looking treasure chest containing the Scorchflame Plate Gloves. Open it to claim them. The chest also often contains a Refined Palmar Pill and other smaller loot — don’t skip those on the way out.
Method 2 – Defeat Flame Knight Tristan
The second way to get the Scorchflame Plate Gloves is to defeat Flame Knight Tristan, a boss inside Flame Knight’s Castle in western Demeniss.
Note: Tristan may not appear inside the castle until you complete Chapter 6 of the main story. If the castle is empty when you arrive, push through the main quest first and return.
How to Beat Flame Knight Tristan
Tristan has an intimidating moveset and can enter a defensive stance that reduces incoming damage significantly. The key to breaking through it is Force Palm — using this move will knock him out of his defensive stance and leave him vulnerable.
From there, the pattern is straightforward:
- Parry or perfectly dodge his attacks to recover Spirit
- Use Force Palm to break his defensive stance whenever he enters it
- Follow up with Heavy Attacks to build his stun bar
- When stunned, unload your strongest combos
Mixing up your attack timing keeps him from anticipating your inputs. If you’re finding it tough, our advanced combat guide and how to parry, counter, and dodge guide cover the mechanics in detail.
After defeating Tristan, you receive a second pair of Scorchflame Plate Gloves — meaning you can now have two copies of Volcanic Eruption in your inventory. This lets you equip the effect on two different characters or keep a spare.

How to Extract Volcanic Eruption and Socket It
The Scorchflame Plate Gloves come with Volcanic Eruption already socketed inside them. But the gloves themselves aren’t necessarily the best piece of armor to build around. Here’s how to move the Abyss Gear to where it works best for your build.
Step 1 – Visit a Witch
Take the gloves to any Witch with full crafting services. Elowen (in the Witchwoods, available from Chapter 5) and the other advanced Witches all support extraction. Sylvia only handles basic options — avoid her for this step.
Step 2 – Extract Volcanic Eruption
Select Extract Abyss Gear from the Witch’s menu. Choose the Scorchflame Plate Gloves and confirm the extraction. Volcanic Eruption is now a standalone item in your inventory.
Step 3 – Create a Socket on Your Chosen Armor
Select Create Socket and choose the armor piece you want to embed Volcanic Eruption into. Gloves and boots are common choices, but any armor piece with an available slot works. Socket creation costs Silver and increases with each additional slot on the same piece.
Step 4 – Embed Volcanic Eruption
Select Embed Abyss Gear, pick Volcanic Eruption from your inventory, and confirm. The effect is now active on that armor piece.
How to Activate Volcanic Eruption in Combat
Once embedded, Volcanic Eruption triggers automatically during combat — but only when specific conditions are met. If fireballs aren’t firing, here’s what to check:
Unlock Imbue Element. Volcanic Eruption requires Imbue Element Level 1 or above. This skill must be invested in through your Abyss Artifact tree before the gear activates at all.
Select the Fire element. Hold F3 on keyboard or D-Pad Right on controller, then choose the Fire element from the selection wheel. Volcanic Eruption is strictly tied to Fire — Ice, Lightning, or Wind will not trigger it. If you have another element active, the gear stays dormant.
Imbue your weapon. When you use an attack that supports elemental imbuement, an Imbue prompt appears in the bottom right of your screen. Activate it. Any fire-imbued attack from this point will trigger Volcanic Eruption.
Unlock Flame Strike for more power. Flame Strike amplifies your fire attacks and pairs extremely well with Volcanic Eruption. Getting both unlocked creates a strong synergy. You can find it in the Abyss — see our how to get Flame Strike and Tree of Slumber walkthrough for exact steps.
Build Tips and Pairings
Volcanic Eruption is best for AoE combat. The four fireballs it launches hit everything in a wide radius around you. Tight groups of enemies take heavy simultaneous damage. Against single bosses, it’s still solid but less dominant than when you’re fighting mobs.
Pair it with Flames of Judgement. Flames of Judgement is the other major fire Abyss Gear, received automatically as you enter Chapter 9 via the Eclipsed Solas Plate Gloves. Together, they create a complete fire-imbue damage loop — one delivers burst AoE explosions, the other adds sustained burn effects. Extract both from their original gloves and stack them into a single armor loadout for the best results.
Watch your Spirit consumption. Every Volcanic Eruption trigger costs additional Spirit on top of your normal skill usage. In long fights this drains quickly. Stack Spirit regeneration on other gear slots or bring Spirit consumables to stay in the fight. Our guide on how to get and use Palmar Pills covers useful recovery options.
Works great in the Turning Slash fire build. One of the strongest combat setups in the game uses Turning Slash imbued with Flame, Volcanic Eruption, and a boss weapon effect to chain three separate damage procs on every single Turning Slash hit. Check our critical rate OP boss build and best early build guides for more context on how to put this together.
Can be combined with Abyssal Rays for a hybrid Light Attack and fire build. Abyssal Rays fires laser beams on Light Attacks, while Volcanic Eruption procs on fire-imbued hits. Running both across different sockets adds two separate passive damage sources to your combo chain. See our how to get Abyssal Rays guide for location details.
Don’t try to stack two Volcanic Eruptions on one character. The effect does not stack with itself. Having two copies is only useful if you’re equipping a second character or keeping a spare.
Quick Tips Before You Go
Grab the cave version first. The Twilight Grotto chest is accessible as soon as you have the Stab skill — no story gate, no boss. Tristan is gated behind Chapter 6, so hit the cave version first for an early power spike.
Loot everything inside the waterfall caves. Waterfall caves in Crimson Desert consistently contain Palmar Pills, smaller loot chests, and other valuables alongside the main chest. Don’t rush straight back out.
After extracting, don’t sell the gloves. The Scorchflame Plate Gloves have solid stats — 14 Attack, 6 Defense, and passive Spirit regeneration. They’re worth keeping as gear even after you’ve pulled Volcanic Eruption out, or sell them when you’ve found a clear upgrade. Don’t accidentally vendor them before extracting the Abyss Gear.
Check out the full Scorchflame set while in the area. There are five pieces total — Gloves, Cloak, Boots, Helm, and Chest — all located in the Demeniss region. The full set builds strong fire resistance. Our Scorchflame Flame Knight Armor Set all locations guide covers every piece with exact directions.
