Abyss Gears List in Crimson Desert — All Cores, Effects, and How to Get Them

Complete Abyss Gears list for Crimson Desert. Every core, its effect, compatible slots, category, and how to get it — including offensive, defensive, resistance, skill, and utility types.

TL;DR

  • Abyss Gears (also called Abyss Cores) socket into your weapons and armor to add bonus effects
  • The system unlocks in Chapter 3 via The Hermit Witch quest — visit Sylvia in Shadow’s Whisper Cave
  • There are 190+ Abyss Gears across offensive, defensive, resistance, skill, and utility categories
  • Most are obtained through Abyss Gear Fusion at Witches, or from enemy drops, chests, and quests
  • Stat-based gears come in tiers — two Tier I copies synthesize into one Tier II at Elowen
  • Slot types vary — some gears only go into armor, others into weapons, shields, gloves, or footwear
  • Elowen (Chapter 5, Witchwoods) offers synthesis and crafting — Sylvia only offers basic services
  • Rare Skill-type gears like Crow’s Pursuit and Howling of Chaos add entirely new combat abilities

Abyss Gears are one of the most powerful build customisation systems in Crimson Desert. They slot directly into sockets on your weapons and armor, adding stat bonuses, passive effects, and in some cases completely new combat abilities. The game drops them into your inventory from early on but gives you almost no explanation of what they are or how to use them.

This guide covers every Abyss Gear in the game organised by category, explains how each one works, where to get them, and how the socket and crafting system functions. For a full hub of all Crimson Desert guides, visit our Crimson Desert guide page.

What Are Abyss Gears

Abyss Gears are socketable items described in-game as refined manifestations of the Abyss’s dangerous power. They slot into sockets on your equipment to provide extra effects — from flat stat increases like Attack +1 to unique active abilities that trigger in combat.

Every piece of equipment has a maximum socket count. Two-handed and ranged weapons hold 5 sockets. One-handed weapons hold 3. Torso armor holds 3. Gloves and boots hold 2 each. Head armor holds 1. Shields hold 2.

The system unlocks during Chapter 3 through the quest The Hermit Witch, when you visit Sylvia in Shadow’s Whisper Cave. You cannot socket or craft Abyss Gears before this point. Elowen becomes available in Chapter 5 at the Witchwoods and offers the full service menu including synthesis and crafting. Sylvia only offers basic options — go to Elowen for anything advanced.

To learn how to unlock and use the Witches’ Abyss system in more detail, see our unlock Witches Abyss Gears guide.

How to Socket Abyss Gears

Equipment does not come with open sockets by default. Before you can embed any gear, you need to visit a Witch and use the Create Socket service on the item first. Then you can embed the gear using the Embed Abyss Gear option.

You can extract socketed gears at any time using the Extract Abyss Gear service. However, extraction is not always safe — lower-tier gears have a chance of being destroyed during extraction. Plan your socketing carefully before committing.

How to Get Abyss Gears

There are four main ways to get Abyss Gears:

Abyss Gear Fusion at Witches — This is the main method. Visit Elowen or Sylvia, select Craft Abyss Gear, and use blueprints plus Abyss Cells to craft specific cores. Most common gears come from this method.

Enemy Drops — Abyss-touched enemies like Bismuth Oreback Crabs, Stoneback Crabs, and corrupted Wandershrub creatures drop Abyss Gears on defeat. Drakesfall Castle north of Hernand and Root’s End Ruins near Sage’s Peak are two of the best early farm spots.

Chests and Exploration — Scattered throughout the world in treasure chests and blockaded areas.

Quests and Challenges — Some rarer gears are tied exclusively to main story quests, faction quests, or Sealed Abyss Artifact challenges. These cannot be crafted.

Abyss Cells are the universal crafting material needed for almost every recipe. They drop from corrupted creatures and Abyss enemies. Farm them consistently and you will always have crafting fuel.

For help farming Abyss Cells, check our how to get Abyss Cells in Crimson Desert guide.

How Synthesis Works

Synthesis is how you upgrade stat-based Abyss Gears to higher tiers. Two copies of the same gear at the same level combine into one stronger version — two Destruction I become one Destruction II, and so on.

Tier II is exactly twice as effective as Tier I. Tier III is three times as effective. This makes synthesis the single most efficient way to improve your build without needing entirely new gear.

There are two synthesis modes:

Regular Synthesis — Requires a blueprint. Deterministic outcome — you always know what you get. Purchase blueprints from Witches.

Special Synthesis — No blueprint required. Combines one Abyss Gear with one compatible Catalyst Gear for a random result. Use this on duplicates or low-value cores. You can run up to 20 fusions at once. Save your game before running large batches so you can reload if the results are poor.

All Abyss Gears by Category

Offensive Abyss Gears

These boost your raw damage output, attack speed, and critical hit rate. They go into weapon slots, gloves, and footwear.

Destruction I — Attack +1. Compatible with weapons, gloves, footwear. One of the most fundamental offensive gears. Get it early and synthesise up to Tier II and III as fast as possible. Available from Witches via blueprint.

Destruction II — Attack +2. Upgraded form of Destruction I. Two Destruction I cores synthesise into one of these.

Destruction III — Attack +3. Crafted via Tier 3 Abyss Gear Fusion at Elowen during The Witch of Wisdom questline.

Insight I — Critical Rate Lv 1. Compatible with weapons, gloves, footwear. Strong early offensive pickup for building crit-heavy setups.

Insight III — Significantly boosts critical rate. Obtained from Elowen via Tier 3 Abyss Gear Fusion.

Rampaging Insight — Critical Hit Chance +10. Compatible with weapons, gloves, footwear. A flat crit boost rather than a level-based upgrade. One of the best standalone crit gears.

Gale I — Attack Speed Lv 1. Compatible with weapons, gloves, footwear. Speeds up your attack animations, useful for fast-hitting builds.

Gale II — Attack Speed Lv 2. Upgraded form of Gale I. Strong for bow builds combined with Destruction II.

Swift I — Attack Speed Lv 1. Functions similarly to Gale I. Check in-game for exact slot compatibility as documentation varies.

Momentum — +35% Turning Slash Damage. Armor slot only. One of the best early offensive gears because Turning Slash deals huge burst damage on staggered bosses. Obtained by extracting the gear from the Leather Helm of the Fallen Kingdom, found in a chest at the Sanctum of Benediction in Hernand.

Malicebane I — +4% damage to mighty foes (bosses). Compatible with weapons. Situationally strong for any boss fight. Obtained from the Wolf’s Fang sword acquired in Chapter 7 — extract it rather than using the weapon if you prefer other weapons.

Defensive Abyss Gears

These protect your survivability through damage reduction, flat defense, and health regeneration. They go primarily into armor and shields.

Aegis I — Damage Reduction 1.0. Compatible with armor and shields. General-purpose defensive gear that reduces incoming damage. Recipes available from Witches in later regions including Serpent Marsh and Pailune.

Fortification I — Defense +3. Compatible with armor and shields. Stacks defense directly. The recipe requires Cockroach x1, Abyss Cell x1, and Azurite x1 — one of the cheapest crafting costs in the game. Synthesise up to Fortification II and III for strong defensive stacking. Recipes found from Witches in Serpent Marsh.

Breath of Life I — Health +1 per second. Armor slot only. Passive health regen that compounds well in longer fights.

Vitality I — Health +0.2 every 1 second. Armor slot only. A lighter regen option compared to Breath of Life.

Fortitude I — Guard Stamina Cost -3.0%. Compatible with shields, gloves, footwear. Reduces the stamina cost of blocking, which matters a lot in sustained fights. Good pairing on shields alongside Aegis.

Resistance Abyss Gears

These counter specific elemental hazards from environments and bosses. All go into armor slots.

Frostward I — Ice Resistance Lv 1. Armor slot only. Essential for icy zones and bosses that use freeze attacks. Equip this before entering frost-heavy areas. Recipes found through camp dispatch missions and environmental exploration.

Shockward I — Lightning Resistance Lv 1. Armor slot only. Protects against lightning-based attacks. Blueprint sources include camp dispatch missions and specific Witches.

Flameward — Fire Resistance. Armor slot only. Counters fire damage from enemies and environmental hazards. Blueprint source similar to other ward gears.

All resistance gears follow the same logic — match the gear to the specific boss or area you are facing. Swapping these in before tough encounters is faster than trying to tank through elemental damage. For help on frost areas specifically, see our ice resistance and frost protection guide.

Skill Abyss Gears

These are the rarest and most exciting category. They add entirely new active combat abilities rather than passive stat increases. Most are acquired from boss drops or specific quests — you cannot roll them through standard fusion.

Crow’s Pursuit — Summons a flock of crows to attack nearby enemies. Melee weapon slot only. A visually spectacular ability that deals area damage around you. One of the most sought-after skill gears in the game.

Howling of Chaos — Emits a sonic shockwave that applies Confusion to nearby enemies. Compatible with melee weapons and shields. Confusion is a strong crowd control debuff, making this excellent for group fights.

Slashing Reeds — Scatters a flurry of reeds dealing damage to nearby enemies hit. Armor slot only. The fact that it goes into armor rather than a weapon slot makes it highly flexible — you can run it alongside weapon-based skill gears simultaneously.

Wind Slash — Unleashes a blade of wind forward that cuts through enemies. Melee weapon slot only. A directional skill attack gear.

Utility Abyss Gears

These improve movement, healing, stamina, progression speed, and resource gathering rather than combat stats.

Haste I — Movement Speed Lv 1. Armor slot only. Makes exploration noticeably faster. Blueprint obtained from The Missing Seal quest in Chapter 5. Prioritise this early since the movement boost applies everywhere.

Gourmet III — Food Effect Lv +3 (approximately +15% food healing). Armor slot only. One of the best utility gears for survivability in boss fights. Obtained by completing the Animal Meat Life Challenge — buy all meat types from the Butchery vendor in Hernand to complete it quickly.

Aptitude I — Skill EXP Gain +10%. Armor slot only. Excellent for early game when you are grinding skill points through Sealed Abyss Artifact challenges. Obtained by claiming the Plate Boots of the Shadows west of Hernand and extracting the gear.

Fortune — Silver gained +10%. Armor slot only. Useful for players focused on economy and trading. Blueprint found through camp exploration missions — specifically the Kingshield Dig Site Exploration mission from the Demeniss tab in Camp Dispatch.

Vigor I — Stamina Regen +2%. Armor slot only. Passive stamina recovery improvement, useful for stamina-hungry combat and traversal.

Spirit Transference — Spirit Siphon Lv 1. Weapon slot only. Regenerates Spirit on attacks. Pairs well with aggressive playstyles that rely on Spirit-fuelled abilities.

Stamina Transference — Stamina Siphon Lv 1. Weapon slot only. Regenerates stamina on attacks. Available early and rewards relentless offense.

Special and Unique Abyss Gears

These gears have individual effects outside the standard categories. Many come from specific story moments, challenges, or late-game bosses.

Infinite Arrows I — Chance not to consume arrows when firing. Weapon slot (bow). Earned from the Bow Aimed at Fate I challenge — defeat 5 enemies with a bow within 60 seconds.

Infinite Arrows II — Higher chance not to consume arrows. Bow slot. Dropped by Karanda.

Infinite Arrows III — Even higher chance. Combined with Infinite Arrows II, the two can reach a total 100% chance not to consume arrows — effectively unlimited ammo for bow builds. Obtained from Elowen via Tier 3 Abyss Gear Fusion during The Witch of Wisdom questline.

For ranged builds using infinite arrows, also check our guide on how to get Replenishing Arrows in Crimson Desert as a renewable ammo source that pairs well before you unlock the Infinite Arrows gears.

Destruction III — The highest tier flat damage gear. Crafted at Elowen.

Orbs of Lightning — Fires orbs of lightning during attacks. Weapon slot. One of the more visually impressive active combat gears.

Ancient Retribution — Provides a powerful combat effect tied to specific attack conditions. Obtained through late-game content.

Best Abyss Gear Combinations by Build

Offensive Melee Build Weapon: Destruction II + Momentum in armor + Malicebane I for boss fights. Use Turning Slash every time an enemy is staggered to maximise the Momentum bonus.

Bow / Ranged Build Weapon: Infinite Arrows II + Infinite Arrows III + Destruction II + Gale II + Rampaging Insight. Fill all 5 bow sockets with these. Gourmet III in armor to keep healing up between engagements.

Defensive Build Armor: Aegis I + Fortification I stacked across armor slots. Shield: Fortitude I + Aegis I. This setup is ideal for players who struggle with boss fights.

Utility / Exploration Build Armor: Haste I + Aptitude I + Fortune + Gourmet III. This maximises Silver gain, Skill EXP, movement speed, and food healing all at once — perfect for early-to-mid game progression.

Where to Farm Abyss Gears Fast

Drakesfall Castle — North of Hernand. Dense population of Bismuth Oreback Crabs that reliably drop Destruction I and Insight I cores. One of the best early farming loops.

Root’s End Ruins — Near Sage’s Peak in Hernand. Stoneback, Mossback, and Floraback Crabs respawn quickly here. Combined with the nearby Abyss Nexus fast travel point, you can loop this spot very efficiently.

Spire of Frost (Demeniss region) — Best spot for farming Malicebane and Steelbane cores from shield and bow-armed enemies. Start at the southernmost encampment to avoid freeze hazards.

Camp Dispatch Missions — The Kingshield Dig Site Exploration mission in the Demeniss tab of Camp Dispatch rewards Abyss Gear blueprint recipes. Run this alongside regular farming to expand your recipe collection.

Important rule for all farm spots — do not fully liberate any blockaded area you plan to revisit. Liberation is permanent and removes the enemy spawns you depend on for farming.

Abyss Gear Tips

  • Always save before running large Special Synthesis batches — reload if results are poor
  • Do not sell duplicate low-tier gears — feed them back into Special Synthesis
  • Blueprints are needed for Regular Synthesis — buy them from Witches or find them through quests
  • Extract gears from armor pieces you find before discarding them — many contain valuable cores like Aptitude I and Haste I
  • Greater tier gears are roughly ten times stronger than Tier I but break after extended use and need replacing
  • Match resistance gears to the specific boss or area before heading in — swapping them out takes seconds
