TL;DR
- Blackstar the dragon has a 15-minute ride limit and a 50-minute real-time cooldown after dismissal.
- The only in-game way to reset it is by using Narima’s Horn, a craftable consumable.
- The blueprint drops from the Timeworn Ruins Excavation dispatch in the Crimson Desert region — but the drop is random.
- Save-scumming before the dispatch completes is the fastest way to guarantee the blueprint.
- Crafting each horn requires 3 Dragon Claw Horns, 1 Stalactite, and 2 Feathers.
- PC players can also use the Unlimited Dragon Flying mod from Nexus Mods to remove the cooldown entirely.
Getting Blackstar the dragon in Chapter 11 feels like one of the best moments in Crimson Desert. Then you discover the 15-minute time limit and the 50-minute cooldown that follows — and those are real-world minutes, not in-game time you can sleep through.
The community reaction has been vocal. Thousands of players have pushed back on the mechanic in Steam discussions, Reddit threads, and review sections. Pearl Abyss has not removed it, but the game does give you a way around it if you know where to look.
This guide covers every method — the in-game item, how to farm it efficiently, and the PC mod option for players who want the cooldown gone entirely.
For everything else in the game, the Crimson Desert hub page has all guides in one place.
Understanding the Dragon Cooldown
Blackstar is unlocked through Chapter 11 of the main story. Once you have him, you can summon and ride him freely — but only for 15 minutes at a time. After that, he is dismissed and enters a 50-minute cooldown before you can call him again.
This is 50 real-world minutes. Not in-game hours you can skip with a bed or bonfire. You wait, or you find a workaround.
There is also an additional restriction: flying over certain towns will force Blackstar to automatically dismiss, which can strand you mid-exploration. Restricted flight zones are marked on the map in red.
If you want to first get the dragon before worrying about the cooldown, the guide on how to get a dragon in Crimson Desert walks through the full unlock process.
The In-Game Solution: Narima’s Horn
Narima’s Horn is the only in-game item that resets Blackstar’s cooldown. Using it instantly brings the timer to zero so you can summon your dragon again right away.
The catch is that it is a single-use consumable. Every time you want to skip the cooldown, you need to use one. That means you need a reliable supply of them, which requires a bit of setup upfront.
Here is the full process from start to finish.
Step 1: Get the Blueprint from Timeworn Ruins Excavation

You cannot craft Narima’s Horn without the blueprint first. The blueprint drops from the Timeworn Ruins Excavation dispatch mission.
The Timeworn Ruins are located east of Tashkalp in the Crimson Desert region. Head there and access the mission board to activate the Timeworn Ruins Excavation dispatch. This mission requires sending 10 Comrades for 72 in-game hours and costs a substantial amount of resources to fund.
The most important thing to know: the reward is random. You might get the blueprint on your first run, or you might not. The blueprint sits in a pool with other rare drops.

Save-scum method to guarantee the blueprint: Create a manual save a few hours before the dispatch completes. When the mission finishes, check your Private Storage at Howling Hill Camp. If the Narima’s Horn blueprint is not there, reload your save and wait out the remaining time again. Repeat until it drops. This turns a potentially lengthy grind into a one-time setup.
Once you have the blueprint, you never need to run this expedition again for it. The recipe is permanently unlocked at any Witch.

Step 2: Gather the Crafting Ingredients
Each Narima’s Horn requires three ingredients:
| Ingredient | Quantity | How to Get |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Claw Horn | 3 | Dragon Claw Horn Production dispatch at Tinkerton Dig Site |
| Stalactite | 1 | Mining pointy rocks in Hernand Highlands Cave, south of Hernand |
| Feather | 2 | Kill and skin wild birds, or butcher birds at your Howling Hill farm |
Dragon Claw Horns (the main bottleneck)
These are the hardest ingredient to source. You need three per horn, and getting them requires running a specific dispatch mission.

Head to the Tinkerton Dig Site, marked near the “S” in Delesyia on the map. Activate the Dragon Claw Horn Production dispatch from the mission board there. This dispatch takes 24 in-game hours and produces 3 Dragon Claw Horns, which go directly into your Private Storage at Howling Hill Camp.
There is one prerequisite: you must have unlocked the Efficient Gathering Research task at the village of Pororin before this dispatch becomes available. You will visit Pororin as part of the Delesyia research faction questline, so work through that content if the dispatch is not showing up.
One warning: a raw Dragon Claw Horn by itself will reduce Blackstar’s cooldown by 10 minutes if you consume it directly. Do not do this. Three horns are worth far more crafted into a full Narima’s Horn that wipes the entire 50-minute timer than wasted on 10-minute shaves.
Stalactite

This is straightforward. Travel south of Hernand and find the Hernand Highlands Cave. Drop down to the bottom of the cliff and look for jagged pointy rocks jutting up from the cave floor. Mine them with your pickaxe. One piece is all you need per craft. For general ore and mining guides, the how to get iron ore guide covers the basics of mining across regions.
Feathers

Feathers are the easiest ingredient to stock up on. Hunt and skin any wild birds you come across in the open world, or purchase birds for your farm at Howling Hill Camp and butcher them there. Some Grocers in Hernand also sell Feathers as materials if you want to skip the hunting.
Step 3: Craft Narima’s Horn at a Witch
Once you have all three ingredients, visit any Witch in any region. Open the Craft Abyss Gear menu and scroll down to the Special Items tab. Narima’s Horn will be listed there once you have the blueprint unlocked.
Craft as many as you can before a long play session. Each one is a clean, instant cooldown reset — no overlap needed, no stacking requirements. The moment Blackstar’s timer expires and he drops you on the ground, open your inventory and use a horn. You can summon him again immediately.
For help locating Witches across Pywel, the all Witches locations guide has every one mapped out.
Sustaining an Infinite Supply
Once the Dragon Claw Horn Production dispatch is set up and running, the system becomes mostly passive. Every 24 in-game hours that dispatch produces 3 Dragon Claw Horns, which gives you one horn per cycle. Set the dispatch running whenever you log in, and your supply stays topped up without manual effort.
Feathers and Stalactite are cheap and abundant, so they will never be the bottleneck. The dispatch is the only thing that needs active management.

PC Option: Remove the Cooldown Entirely with a Mod
For PC players who want to skip the horn system entirely, the Unlimited Dragon Flying mod by lemonheads on Nexus Mods removes the 50-minute cooldown outright. It also removes the forced dismissal when flying over towns and adds duration presets for riding times of 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 2 hours, 4 hours, or effectively unlimited.
The mod also includes toggleable infinite stamina for Blackstar and infinite HP options.
To install it, download the mod from Nexus Mods and follow the instructions on the mod page. It works through the JSON Mod Manager (the same tool used for other Crimson Desert mods) as well as an ASI plugin for the cooldown removal specifically.
Console players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S cannot use mods, so Narima’s Horn is the only available method on those platforms.
Quick Summary: Both Methods
| Method | Platform | How It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Narima’s Horn | All platforms | Crafted consumable, resets 50-min cooldown instantly, one-use per craft |
| Unlimited Dragon Flying mod | PC only | Removes cooldown, town dismissal, and adds longer ride duration presets |
The dragon cooldown is one of the most criticized mechanics in Crimson Desert, and it is easy to see why. A 50-minute real-time timer in a singleplayer game is a significant friction point. But once your camp dispatch system is up and running and you have a stock of Narima’s Horns ready, it stops being a problem. Craft a few before each session, keep Dragon Claw Horn Production ticking in the background, and Blackstar becomes the unrestricted mount he was meant to be.
