TL;DR
- The Satintail Root is needed for the Village of the Sick faction quest in Sunset Valley, southwestern Hernand.
- Talk to the healer Freidis in Sunset Valley to start the quest.
- The Satintail Root is a tall stalk of green grass with a white head — easy to miss without knowing what to look for.
- Head northwest of the village, past the fields on the west side.
- Look for a large tree next to a big rock — the Satintail Root spawns at the base of that tree.
- An “Investigate the surrounding area” prompt appears on screen when you are close enough.
- Return the root to Freidis to complete the quest.
- Rewards: Rattan Shield (Refinement Level 2), +30 Hernandian Contribution EXP, and a Medium Bag (+3 Inventory Slots).
How to get Satintail Root in Crimson Desert is one of those questions that trips up a lot of players. The Village of the Sick quest points you to a large search zone north of Sunset Valley, but the plant itself is a single, easy-to-overlook specimen with no map pin pointing to the exact spot. The game never tells you what the plant looks like, which makes hunting for it frustrating. This guide shows you exactly where it is and how to wrap up the quest fast. What Is the Village of the Sick Quest?
Village of the Sick is a faction quest in the Sunset Valley region, located in the far southwestern corner of Hernand. The village is an isolated settlement where residents have fallen ill with a mysterious disease. The local healer, Freidis, needs medicinal herbs to prepare a cure — specifically, a Satintail Root — but cannot leave the patients to go find it himself.
The quest is optional but worth doing early. The Medium Bag reward gives you three extra inventory slots, which is a meaningful upgrade in Crimson Desert given that the game has a single shared inventory for all your weapons, gear, and collectibles. Getting more inventory space as early as possible makes exploration much easier. For more on managing your inventory, see our guide on how to increase inventory space in Crimson Desert.
How to Start the Village of the Sick Quest
Travel to Sunset Valley in the far south of Hernand — it sits at the very bottom of the map, well off the path of most main-story objectives. The fastest way to get there is to use the nearby Abyss Cresset as a fast travel point if you have already activated it. If not, ride south from the City of Hernand along the road.
Once in Sunset Valley, find the healer Freidis in the village and speak with him. He will explain the situation and ask you to find a Satintail Root in the area to the north. Accepting his request starts the quest.
Note on quest availability: The quest can appear as early as Chapter 3, but trigger conditions are inconsistent. Some players see it immediately on their first visit to the village, while others reach later chapters without it appearing. No confirmed prerequisite quest has been identified. If Freidis is not showing a quest marker, try leaving and returning to the area, or progress further in the main story and come back.
What Does Satintail Root Look Like?
This is the part the game does not tell you. Satintail Root is a tall stalk of green grass topped with a white, fluffy head — similar to a cattail or pampas grass in appearance. It grows in small clusters in forested and marshy areas. It blends in easily with the surrounding vegetation, which is why so many players walk right past it.
When you are close enough to the correct plant, an “Investigate the surrounding area” prompt will appear at the bottom of your screen. That is your signal that you are in the right spot. If the prompt is not appearing, you are not quite at the plant yet — keep searching the immediate area.

Satintail Root Location — Exact Spot
Head northwest of Sunset Valley. Cross the fields on the western side of the village. You are looking for a large tree growing next to a big rock. The Satintail Root grows right at the base of that tree.
More specifically: from the village, go to the northwest outskirts and look for the third field on the west side. Almost directly north of the tip of that third field, you will find the large tree and rock together. The herb is right there at ground level beneath the tree. Multiple small outcrops of Satintail Root can be found in the general Sunset Valley area, so if you are tracking the quest and the search zone is highlighted on your map, stick to the northwestern edge of that zone near the treeline for the fastest find.
Alternative location: Some players also report finding Satintail Root in the Duskwoods west of Hernand City, often growing close to running water. If you are struggling to find it at Sunset Valley for any reason, check forested areas near water sources in that direction. For more on Duskwood exploration, see our Duskwood Ancient Ruins puzzle guide.

How to Complete the Quest
- Travel to Sunset Valley in southwestern Hernand.
- Speak with Freidis the healer to start the Village of the Sick quest.
- Head northwest of the village, past the western fields.
- Find the large tree next to the big rock — wait for the “Investigate the surrounding area” prompt.
- Interact with the plant to pick up the Satintail Root.
- Return to Freidis in Sunset Valley.
- Talk to Freidis twice — the quest completion triggers on the second dialogue interaction, not the first.

Village of the Sick Quest Rewards
Completing the Village of the Sick quest gives you three rewards:
- Rattan Shield (Refinement Level 2) — A useful early-game shield.
- +30 Hernandian Contribution EXP — Adds to your Hernand faction standing.
- Medium Bag (+3 Inventory Slots) — The most valuable reward. Three extra slots in Crimson Desert’s shared inventory is a significant quality-of-life upgrade, especially early in the game.
The inventory expansion is the main reason to do this quest sooner rather than later. Crimson Desert has no storage chests, so every slot counts. If you want to maximize your inventory capacity further, check our full guide on how to increase inventory space.
Bonus While You Are in Sunset Valley
Before leaving the area, consider doing a couple of extra things that are easy to miss:
- Golden Tench legendary fish — There is a small pond south of Sunset Valley where you can catch the Golden Tench. This is a legendary fish that sells for 26.60 Silver to any merchant — easy cash in the early game. For fishing tips, see our guide on how to fish in Crimson Desert.
- Abyss Cresset fast travel point — If you have not activated the nearby Abyss Cresset, do it now. It gives you a fast travel point for this out-of-the-way corner of the map and rewards an Abyss Artifact.
- Track nearby wolves before gathering — The marshland around Sunset Valley has wolves that can interrupt you while searching for the herb. Clearing them before looking for the root makes the whole process smoother.
Tips to Find the Satintail Root Faster
- Track the quest in your quest log. Tracking it highlights the search zone more clearly on your minimap, which makes navigating to the right area faster.
- Go during daytime. The white head of the Satintail Root is much easier to spot in daylight than at night when the area is dim. If it is dark when you arrive, change the time of day first. See our guide on how to change the time of day in Crimson Desert.
- Look for the landmark, not the plant. Do not scan the ground endlessly. Instead, find the large tree next to the big rock first — it is easier to spot — then look at its base for the root.
- Wait for the prompt. If you are not getting the “Investigate” prompt, you are not close enough to the plant. Move slowly through the search zone and watch the bottom of your screen.
