Get a Bear Mount in Crimson Desert

TL;DR

  • Bears are temporary mounts — you must fight each one until it staggers, then press Square/X to ride
  • Best early location: Greenfield Highlands at the Grace Estate Abyss Nexus — guaranteed spawn every 24 in-game hours
  • Bears are also found in the Hernand Highlands (south) and snowy Pailune forests (north)
  • Bears do not spawn in the Crimson Desert region itself
  • Once mounted, use R2/RT to trigger bear attacks; you can also use your own weapons on its back
  • Dismounting makes the bear immediately hostile — be ready to fight or run
  • Wild bears cannot be kept as permanent mounts — they cannot be stored at stables (as of Patch 1.00.03)
  • For a permanent bear mount, defeat the Legendary White Bear in Pailune and craft the Sigil of Solidarity at a Witch’s Lair

Crimson Desert lets you ride bears — and it is exactly as chaotic and satisfying as it sounds. Bears are not gentle mounts that follow you around. They are wild animals you have to beat into submission, ride for as long as you can keep hold of them, and then deal with when they turn hostile the moment you step off. This guide covers where to find bears, how to tame them, what you can do while mounted, and how to get the only permanent bear mount in the game.

Where to Find Bears in Crimson Desert

Bears are found across Pywel but are concentrated in two main regions:

Hernand Highlands (South) — This is the best early-game option. Bears roam the southern woods and highlands around Hernand. You do not need to be far into the story to reach this area, making it the go-to spot for most players who want a bear ride early.

Pailune Snowy Forests (North) — Bears also appear in the snowy forests of Pailune further north. These are accessible later in the game as you progress through the story.

Bears do not spawn in the Crimson Desert region — despite the game’s name. Do not waste time searching in the desert.

Guaranteed Spawn Location

If you want a reliable bear without wandering, head to the Greenfield Highlands near the Grace Estate Abyss Nexus. A bear spawns here on a consistent cycle — once every 24 in-game hours. This is the easiest guaranteed location to use if you want to skip the random search. There is also a bear den south of Hernand near the first Abyss Nexus in the area, where you can find one sleeping inside.

How to Tame and Ride a Bear in Crimson Desert

Taming a bear in Crimson Desert works nothing like taming a horse. There is no approaching from behind or offering food. You fight it.

Step 1 — Find a Bear and Engage

Approach any bear in the wild. It will turn hostile immediately and charge at you. This is expected — do not back off.

Make a manual save before the fight if you want a safety net. If you kill the bear accidentally or miss the ride window, you will have to wait for it to respawn. A save lets you reload and try again immediately.

Bring healing food before engaging. Bears hit hard and can down a poorly prepared player quickly. See our how to cook the best healing food guide if you need to stock up.

Step 2 — Deal Damage Until the Bear Staggers

Attack the bear with your weapon — melee or ranged both work — until its health drops low enough that it stops fighting back. You will know it is ready when it visibly staggers, pauses its attacks, and its posture shifts. A Ride prompt will appear on screen.

Step 3 — Mount the Bear Immediately

The window to mount is very short — roughly two to three seconds. Do not hesitate.

  • PlayStation: Press Square
  • Xbox: Press X

If you miss the window, the bear will recover and attack again. Continuing to fight after this point risks killing it entirely, ending your chance at a ride. If this happens, reload your manual save and try again.

What You Can Do While Riding a Bear

Once mounted, the bear becomes a powerful combat tool. Here is what you can do:

Bear Attacks — Press R2 (PlayStation) / RT (Xbox) to command the bear to attack. Bears use wide claw swipes that hit multiple enemies at once, making them excellent for clearing groups. Riding a bear into a bandit camp and letting it do the heavy work saves your own resources and health.

Use Your Own Weapons — You can still attack with your own weapons while on the bear’s back. This creates a layered combat setup where both you and the bear deal damage simultaneously.

Sprint and Jump — The bear has its own stamina bar and can sprint on all fours and jump independently. It moves well across uneven terrain.

Absorb Damage — While mounted, the bear takes damage instead of you. This makes the ride phase significantly safer than the taming fight was.

The bear is best used for clearing enemy camps, especially ones with clustered groups of soldiers where its wide swipe attacks shine. For help with camp liberation, see our how to get comrades guide and the Crimson Desert horse guide for comparison on what different mounts offer.

What Happens When You Dismount

The moment you jump off the bear, it becomes hostile again. There is no graceful exit. You will immediately have a full-health angry bear behind you. Either be ready to fight it, run away fast, or have a fast travel point nearby to escape. Do not dismount unless you are prepared for a fight or have a clear escape route.

Can You Keep a Bear as a Permanent Mount in Crimson Desert?

No — as of Patch 1.00.03, wild bears cannot be kept as permanent mounts.

Even if you bring a tamed bear to a Stable, you cannot store it or put a saddle on it. Wild bears remain wild animals that can only be ridden temporarily after being subdued. Every session, if you want to ride a bear, you have to find and fight one again from scratch.

Pearl Abyss may update this in future patches. If that changes, this guide will be updated accordingly.

How to Get the Permanent White Bear Mount

If you want a permanent bear mount you can summon at will, the Legendary White Bear is your target. This is a different animal entirely and requires more effort but rewards you with a proper mountable bear.

Here is how to get it:

  1. Head to Five-Finger Mountain in the far northwest of Pailune, west of Silver Wolf Mountain
  2. Find and defeat the White Bear in the snowy area — it will have cubs nearby
  3. After defeating it, you receive the White Bear Claws key item
  4. Take the White Bear Claws to Elowen at the Witch’s Lair vendor
  5. Select “Craft Abyss Gear” and navigate to the Special Items tab at the far end
  6. Use the White Bear Claws to craft the Sigil of Solidarity for White Bear
  7. Open your inventory and consume the Sigil of Solidarity to permanently unlock the White Bear mount
  8. Press F1 (PC) / Down on D-pad (console) and cycle to White Bear to equip it as your active mount

The White Bear cannot level up like horses can, so its stats are fixed from the moment you unlock it. However, it functions as a genuine battle mount with claw swipes and multi-swipe combos, and unlike the Dragon mount, you can ride the White Bear through towns without drawing hostile reactions from NPCs.

Tips for Getting and Using a Bear Mount

  • Save manually before the fight — missing the ride window or accidentally killing the bear wastes the spawn
  • Use the Greenfield Highlands guaranteed spawn rather than wandering if you want a reliable bear quickly
  • Bring healing food — bears are aggressive and the taming fight can be rough without recovery items
  • React immediately when the Ride prompt appears — the window is only two to three seconds
  • Ride into enemy camps for the most efficient use of a bear mount — wide claw attacks clear groups fast
  • Do not dismount unless ready to fight — the bear turns hostile the instant you get off
  • For a permanent bear mount, hunt the Legendary White Bear in northwest Pailune
