TL;DR
- The Mechanic Jack is needed to lift the Rusted Shutters blocking the southeast and southwest doors of the RPD Main Hall
- It’s found on the floor in the northern part of the Library on the second floor of R.P.D.
- To reach it: head through the West Office → south corridor → Reception → shoot down the ladder → go up and enter the Library
- Once you have it, use it on both Rusted Shutters in the Main Hall (1F)
- The Mechanic Jack is a one-time use tool — after both shutters are open, you’re done with it
- Veterans of RE2 will recognise the R.P.D. layout, which makes navigation much easier
The R.P.D. is one of the most iconic locations in Resident Evil history. Seeing it again in Resident Evil Requiem — decades after the events of RE2 — is a nostalgia trip and a half. But the building has aged badly. Rusted Shutters are blocking two key doors in the Main Hall, and you need a specific tool to pry them open. Here’s exactly where to find the Mechanic Jack and what to do with it.

What Are the Rusted Shutters in RE9?
When you enter the R.P.D. Main Hall as Leon, you’ll notice two heavy metal security shutters that are completely stuck. One is on the southeast side and one is on the southwest side of the Main Hall (1F).
These doors have been sealed shut for years — rust, structural damage, and decades of neglect have jammed them shut. You can’t force them open, shoot them open, or bypass them. The only thing that works is the Mechanic Jack, a tool built specifically to pry up heavy metal doors like these.
Where to Find the Mechanic Jack in RE9
The Mechanic Jack is in the Library on the second floor of the R.P.D. Here’s how to get there step by step.

Step 1 — Head Through the West Office
From the Main Hall, head into the West Office. This is on the left side as you face the stairs. Make your way through and continue south down the corridor.
Step 2 — Deal With the Zombie in the Corridor
There’s a zombie roaming the south corridor. Take it out before moving on — it’s a tight space and you don’t want it catching you from behind.
Step 3 — Reach the Reception and Shoot Down the Ladder
Continue south until you reach the Reception area. You’ll find a ladder hanging overhead. It has yellow tape holding it up. Shoot the tape to drop the ladder down, then climb up to the second floor.
Step 4 — Enter the Library
At the top, go through the door on the right to enter the Library.
The Mechanic Jack is on the floor in the northern part of the Library, sitting near the bookshelves. It’s easy to spot — just look along the floor as you move through the room.
Pick it up and you’re ready to go.

How to Use the Mechanic Jack on the Rusted Shutters
Head back down to the Main Hall (1F). Approach either of the two Rusted Shutters — southeast or southwest. Walk up to the door and an interaction prompt will appear. Activate it and Leon will use the Mechanic Jack to pry the shutter up.
Do the same for the second shutter.
Once both are open, you won’t need the Mechanic Jack anymore. It’s a single-purpose tool and the game won’t require it after this point.
What’s Behind the Rusted Shutters?
The important one is the east shutter. Head through it and follow the corridor. A cutscene will trigger that moves the story forward in a big way — and leads directly into the Orphanage flashback section.
The R.P.D. visit is shorter than it might feel when you first walk in. The Mechanic Jack is the main thing standing between you and the next chapter.
Tips for the R.P.D. Section
- If you played Resident Evil 2, the layout will feel very familiar — use that knowledge to navigate faster
- The Mechanic Jack stays on the Library floor until you pick it up — you won’t miss it if you explore the room
- After opening the shutters, go through the east shutter first — that’s the one that progresses the story
- There are several collectibles and puzzles in the R.P.D. worth grabbing before you trigger the next cutscene, including the RPD Scavenger Hunt puzzle left behind by Barry Burton
