Who Is Layla in Genshin Impact?

Layla is a 4-star Cryo Sword character from Sumeru in Genshin Impact. She is a student at the Rtawahist Darshan — one of the six great schools of the Sumeru Akademiya — where she studies Theoretical Astrology. She is hardworking, deeply passionate about her research, and chronically sleep-deprived as a result.

What makes Layla particularly charming is her sleepwalking. She is so overwhelmed by her academic workload that she frequently completes assignments in her sleep. She wakes to find work done by what she calls “The Stars’ Blessing” — not knowing it was her own somnambulant self the entire time. Her constellation is named Luscinia, and her birthday is December 19.

She became playable in Version 3.2, released on November 2, 2022, and was added to the Standard banner in Version 3.3, making her consistently obtainable over time. In combat, she protects her team with a powerful HP-scaling shield and applies steady off-field Cryo without needing to stay on the field. She works well in Freeze teams and pairs naturally with characters like Ganyu and the Cryo Traveler who benefit from reliable Cryo synergy.

Layla Character Overview – Stats and Role

Layla is a support character. Her primary job is to keep her team safe with a near-permanent shield while providing passive Cryo application off the field. She is not a damage dealer, though she can contribute meaningfully to Freeze reactions and off-field Cryo setups at higher constellations.

    • Rarity: 4-Star
    • Element: Cryo
    • Weapon: Sword
    • Region: Sumeru
    • Role: Shield Support / Off-Field Cryo
    • Released: November 2, 2022 (Version 3.2)
    • Constellation: Luscinia
    • Ascension Stat: HP%

Layla is available in Genshin Impact on Android, iOS, PlayStation, Epic Games, and Xbox.

    Layla Strengths and Weaknesses

    Strengths

    • One of the strongest and most accessible shields in the game — absorbs Cryo DMG with 250% effectiveness
    • Near-100% shield uptime with proper Energy Recharge investment
    • Passive off-field Cryo application through Shooting Stars and her Elemental Burst
    • HP scaling makes her very straightforward to build
    • Works in virtually any team that benefits from Cryo or wants a shielder
    • Now available on the Standard banner — easy to obtain constellations over time
    • C0 is fully functional from the start — no required constellations

    Weaknesses

    • Low personal damage — purely a support investment
    • Provides very few direct buffs to teammates at C0 beyond the shield and Cryo application
    • Requires Energy Recharge management to maintain shield uptime consistently
    • Not as universally dominant as Zhongli’s shield in terms of raw absorption

    Layla Skills and Abilities

Here is a full breakdown of every skill Layla has and how each one functions in combat.

Normal Attack – Sword of the Radiant Path

Layla performs up to three rapid sword strikes. Her Charged Attack consumes stamina for two quick sword swings. Her Plunging Attack deals AoE DMG on landing. Normal Attacks are not used in her support rotation and are rarely relevant to her role. This talent is never prioritized.

Elemental Skill – Nights of Formal Focus

This is the core of Layla’s entire kit. When activated, she puts forth the Curtain of Slumber — a shield that scales with her Max HP and absorbs Cryo DMG with 250% effectiveness. When the shield activates, Cryo is briefly applied to Layla herself.

While the Curtain of Slumber is active, it accumulates Night Stars — one every 1.5 seconds, and one additional Night Star every time the shielded character uses their own Elemental Skill. Once 4 Night Stars have been gathered and enemies are nearby, they transform into Shooting Stars that home in on enemies and deal Cryo DMG. This is Layla’s main source of passive off-field Cryo application.

The shield has a generous duration and the skill has a manageable cooldown, allowing it to have near-permanent uptime when Layla’s Energy is managed properly. The more HP Layla has, the stronger the shield becomes.

Elemental Burst – Dream of the Star-Stream Shaker

Layla releases a Celestial Dreamsphere that orbits and continuously attacks nearby enemies with Cryo DMG for its duration. The Dreamsphere also generates additional Night Stars while active, which then convert into Shooting Stars as normal. This Burst provides extra off-field Cryo damage and accelerates Night Star generation.

The Burst costs 40 Energy — one of the lowest energy costs in the game — which means Layla can use it frequently without needing massive Energy Recharge investment. Aim for 130–150% Energy Recharge to use it consistently every rotation.

    Passive Talents

    • Like Nascent Light (1st Ascension): While the Curtain of Slumber is active, Layla’s Max HP increases by 6% when she generates Night Stars, up to 4 stacks. This bonus increases her own HP, which in turn makes her shield stronger. It is a self-reinforcing loop that rewards staying in combat with the shield active.
    • Sweet Slumber Undisturbed (4th Ascension): The DMG dealt by Shooting Stars from Nights of Formal Focus is increased by 1.5% of Layla’s Max HP. This passive scales her off-field Cryo damage directly with HP, making it relevant to build even for a pure support role. More HP means both stronger shields and stronger Shooting Stars.
    • Utility Passive – Shadowy Dream-Signs: When Layla crafts Weapon Enhancement Materials, she has a 10% chance to receive double the product. A minor crafting bonus that helps with material efficiency.

Best Layla Build in Genshin Impact

Layla is a HP-focused support. The build goal is to reach as much Max HP as possible to maximize shield strength, while maintaining enough Energy Recharge for consistent Burst uptime.

    Support Build (Standard – Best)

    • Artifact Set: Tenacity of the Millelith (4-piece)
    • Sands Main Stat: HP% or Energy Recharge (use ER% if you struggle to maintain Burst uptime)
    • Goblet Main Stat: HP%
    • Circlet Main Stat: HP%
    • Substat Priority: HP% / Energy Recharge / flat HP
    • Target HP: 40,000+ for strong shields; higher is always better
    • Target Energy Recharge: 130–150%

The Tenacity of the Millelith 4-piece bonus is ideal for Layla. When her Elemental Skill hits an enemy, all party members gain 20% ATK and 30% Shield Strength for 3 seconds. Since her Night Stars fire regularly off-field, this buff has excellent uptime and benefits her entire team without any extra effort.

    Alternative: Noblesse Oblige (4-piece)

If another character already carries Tenacity of the Millelith, Noblesse Oblige is a solid second option. Using her Elemental Burst grants all party members 20% ATK for 12 seconds. Since her Burst is cheap and used frequently, uptime is easy to maintain. This build works well if your team already has a Tenacity carrier and you want stacked ATK buffs.

    Sub-DPS Build (Freeze Teams)

If you want Layla to contribute more Cryo damage in Freeze teams, a 4-piece Blizzard Strayer set can be used. The set increases Cryo DMG Bonus and provides up to +40% CRIT Rate against frozen or Cryo-affected enemies. Pair with CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG on the Circlet and Cryo DMG% on the Goblet. This sacrifices some of her shielding focus but makes her a more active participant in Freeze damage output.

    Layla

    Best Weapons for Layla

Layla wants HP%, Energy Recharge, or a mix of both from her weapon. Here are the top choices:

    • Key of Khaj-Nisut (5-star, Best for HP Builds): A 5-star sword that provides HP% as a substat and, after using an Elemental Skill, grants further HP% bonuses. This directly feeds her shield scaling and makes hitting high HP totals much easier. Best-in-slot for pure shielding performance.
    • Favonius Sword (4-star, Best Overall): Provides Energy Recharge and has a passive that generates energy particles for the whole team on CRIT hits. In most teams, this is Layla’s most practically useful weapon because it smooths out energy management for everyone — not just herself. A strong choice for almost every team type.
    • The Dockhand’s Assistant (4-star): HP% substat weapon. Excellent for reaching the HP threshold needed for strong shields without relying on artifact stats. Layla cannot activate its full passive, but the raw HP% stat alone is valuable and makes it a competitive second option behind Favonius Sword in many situations.
    • Sacrificial Sword (4-star): Energy Recharge substat. Has a chance to reset the Elemental Skill cooldown, allowing Layla to refresh her shield faster and generate extra Night Stars and energy particles. Useful in teams where energy is tight.
    • Fleuve Cendre Ferryman (4-star, F2P-Friendly): Energy Recharge substat with a passive that increases Elemental Skill Energy generation. A craftable option in some versions of the game, making it very accessible. Good for new players who need Layla functioning quickly.
    • Primordial Jade Cutter (5-star, Sub-DPS Option): CRIT Rate substat with HP% conversion into ATK. Excellent if you are running a Blizzard Strayer damage build and want Layla to contribute more Cryo DMG while still benefiting from her HP scaling.

Best Layla Teams in Genshin Impact

Layla works in almost any team that benefits from Cryo application or needs a shielder. Here are the most effective compositions.

    Freeze Team (Classic)

    Ganyu / Layla / Kokomi / Kazuha

Layla provides the Cryo shield and passive Shooting Star application to maintain Freeze on enemies alongside Kokomi’s Hydro. Kazuha groups enemies and swirls Cryo for the Viridescent Venerer resistance shred. Ganyu fires Frostflake Arrows at perpetually frozen enemies. A clean, comfortable, and very powerful team for players who own Ganyu.

    Freeze Team (Budget)

Kamisato Ayaka / Layla / Xingqiu / Diona

Layla shields the team while Xingqiu applies off-field Hydro. Ayaka dashes through enemies to apply Cryo and unleashes her Burst for high damage. Diona provides Cryo Resonance and supplementary healing. A team that keeps Ayaka safe while freezing enemies consistently.

    Melt / Plunge Support Team

    Gaming / Ganyu / Layla / Xianyun

Layla applies off-field Cryo to set up Melt reactions for Gaming’s plunge attacks. Xianyun buffs plunge damage and heals. Ganyu contributes additional Cryo and burst damage off-field. Layla’s shield keeps Gaming safe while he stays airborne for plunge attacks. A fun and effective Melt team for players who enjoy Gaming’s playstyle.

    Cryo Main DPS Team

    Wriothesley / Layla / Furina / Kazuha

Layla shields Wriothesley while Furina provides off-field Hydro for Freeze. Kazuha groups enemies and amplifies Cryo DMG. Wriothesley punches his way through frozen enemies with powerful Cryo attacks. A strong modern team that takes advantage of Layla’s low-maintenance shielding.

    Universal Shielder Role

Layla can also serve as a flexible replacement for other shielders in teams that need Cryo application. If your main DPS takes Cryo damage — such as in content with Cryo-slime waves — Layla’s 250% Cryo absorption effectiveness makes her uniquely suited as a defensive pick. She can slot into Stellar Conduct teams and Snezhnayan compositions where Cryo uptime and shield protection both matter. For more team ideas see the best Cryo teams in Genshin Impact.

    Layla Constellations Guide

Layla is fully functional at C0. Her constellations gradually improve her shielding and off-field Cryo output. Here is what each one does:

    • C1 – Fortress of Fantasy (Best Early Stop): The Shield Absorption of the Curtain of Slumber is increased by 20%. Additionally, when Nights of Formal Focus is used, nearby party members who are not shielded by Layla’s Curtain receive a secondary shield with 35% of the main shield’s absorption that lasts 12 seconds and absorbs Cryo DMG with 250% effectiveness. This constellation meaningfully increases her shielding output and extends protection to recently swapped-in characters before the main shield attaches. A strong quality-of-life upgrade recommended as the first investment.
    • C2 – Light’s Remit: When Shooting Stars from Nights of Formal Focus hit opponents, they each restore 1 Energy to Layla. Each Shooting Star can restore energy in this way once. This reduces her Energy Recharge requirements and makes her Burst rotation more forgiving. A decent convenience upgrade, particularly for teams without strong energy generation.
    • C3 – Secrets of the Night: Increases the talent level of Nights of Formal Focus (Elemental Skill) by 3. Boosts shield absorption scaling and Shooting Star damage output. A straightforward upgrade.
    • C4 – Starry Illumination: When Nights of Formal Focus begins to fire off Shooting Stars, all nearby party members gain the Dawn Star effect — increasing their Normal and Charged Attack DMG by 5% of Layla’s Max HP. This buff lasts up to 3 seconds and is removed shortly after a Normal or Charged Attack connects. A significant constellation for teams with Normal or Charged Attack focused DPS carries. The buff scales with Layla’s HP, rewarding high HP builds even further.
    • C5 – Radiant Soulfire: Increases the talent level of Dream of the Star-Stream Shaker (Elemental Burst) by 3. Boosts Burst damage and the Dreamsphere’s Cryo DMG output.
    • C6 – Cosmos of the Eternal Night: Shooting Stars from Nights of Formal Focus deal 40% increased DMG, and Starlight Slugs from Dream of the Star-Stream Shaker deal 40% increased DMG. A pure damage boost to her off-field Cryo output. Noticeable for Sub-DPS builds in Freeze teams but not a game-changing shift for pure support play.

Investment priority: C1 is the best early stopping point and directly improves her primary function. C2 eases energy management. C4 is the standout mid-investment constellation for teams with Normal Attack carries. C6 is a clean damage upgrade for Sub-DPS builds.

    Layla Talent Priority

Here is the correct order to invest talent books for Layla:

    1. Elemental Skill – Nights of Formal Focus (Highest Priority): This talent controls the shield absorption value and the damage of her Shooting Stars, both of which scale with talent level on top of HP. More levels here mean a stronger shield and more Cryo damage off-field. Level this first and keep it as her highest priority talent.
    2. Elemental Burst – Dream of the Star-Stream Shaker (Second): The Burst deals Cryo damage and generates additional Night Stars, accelerating Shooting Star output. Leveling it second increases its contribution to off-field Cryo application and helps in Freeze or Sub-DPS builds.
    3. Normal Attack – Sword of the Radiant Path (Skip): Never used in her rotation. Leave this at level 1. Spending talent books here provides almost zero practical value.

How to Play Layla – Rotation Tips

Layla’s field time is minimal. Her rotation is quick and easy to execute.

    1. Swap to Layla and use her Elemental Skill to deploy the Curtain of Slumber shield.
    2. Use her Elemental Burst if it is ready — the Dreamsphere will activate and begin attacking enemies and generating Night Stars automatically.
    3. Swap to your main DPS. While they fight, the shield absorbs incoming damage and Shooting Stars fire automatically at nearby enemies, applying Cryo passively.
    4. When the shield is about to expire, swap back to Layla for a quick Skill refresh and Burst re-activation if ready.
    5. Repeat.

Layla’s total field time per rotation is typically just 2–5 seconds. The rest of the time she is doing her job entirely off-field. This makes her one of the least disruptive supports in the game — your main DPS gets maximum uptime while Cryo application runs in the background.

One important tip: make sure the active character uses their own Elemental Skill while shielded by Layla to accelerate Night Star generation and trigger Shooting Stars faster. Every Elemental Skill used by a shielded character adds one Night Star, speeding up the Cryo application cycle significantly.

    Layla Ascension Materials

Here is everything you need to ascend Layla to level 90:

    Character Ascension Materials

    • Shivada Jade (Sliver, Fragment, Chunk, Gemstone) — The standard Cryo ascension gem. Farm from the Cryo Regisvine in Mondstadt, the Cryo Hypostasis, or various weekly bosses. Craft higher tiers by combining three of the lower tier at an Alchemy Table.
    • Perpetual Caliber — Dropped by the Aeonblight Drake world boss, found inside a cave in Devantaka Mountain in Sumeru’s Ardravi Valley. You need 46 total for full ascension. Bring a Bow user to knock it out of the sky efficiently.
    • Nilotpala Lotus — A local specialty found floating on bodies of water throughout the Sumeru rainforest. Key locations include Lokapala Jungle, Devantaka Mountain, and Pardis Dhyai. You need 168 total. Use the Seed Dispensary gadget to harvest seeds and grow more in the Serenitea Pot.
    • Scrolls (Divining Scroll, Sealed Scroll, Forbidden Curse Scroll) — Dropped by Samachurl enemies found all across Teyvat. You need large quantities for both ascension and talent upgrades, so farm these continuously during exploration.

    Talent Ascension Materials

    • Books of Ingenuity (Teachings, Guide, Philosophies of Ingenuity) — Farmed from the Steeple of Ignorance domain in Sumeru, available on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday. You need 9 Teachings, 63 Guides, and 114 Philosophies to max one talent.
    • Scrolls — Same Samachurl drops as above. You need additional quantities beyond the ascension requirements to fully level all three talents.
    • Mirror of Mushin — Dropped by the Joururi Workshop weekly boss (Shouki no Kami, the Prodigal) in Sumeru City. You need 18 total to max all three talents. This is the most time-gated material — farm it weekly without missing.
    • Crown of Insight — One per crowned talent. Obtained from limited events, the Tree of Dreams in Sumeru, and Archon Quest milestone rewards.

Maxing one talent from level 1 to 10 costs 3 Teachings, 21 Guides, 38 Philosophies of Ingenuity, Scroll drops of all tiers, 6 Mirror of Mushin, 1 Crown of Insight, and 1,652,500 Mora. Multiply by three for all talents. Focus on her Elemental Skill first and skip Normal Attacks entirely.

    Layla Lore and Story

Layla attends the Rtawahist Darshan — the school within the Akademiya dedicated to the study of the stars, astrology, and celestial phenomena. She specializes in Theoretical Astrology, a highly demanding discipline that she approaches with exhausting dedication. She rarely sleeps well and is frequently on the edge of collapse from her academic pressures.

Her sleepwalking has become both her coping mechanism and her ongoing mystery. Papers get completed overnight with calculations she doesn’t remember making. Assignments are finished in handwriting she vaguely recognizes as her own. She has attributed this to a phenomenon she calls “The Stars’ Blessing” — only slowly coming to suspect that her own exhausted body is doing the work while she sleeps.

In combat, Layla’s kit directly reflects her academic world. Her shield is the Curtain of Slumber, her Burst summons a Celestial Dreamsphere, and her homing projectiles are Shooting Stars — all imagery drawn from night skies, stargazing, and the gentle blurring of sleep. Even her name, Layla, means “night” in Arabic, fitting for an astrologist who practically lives in the hours after dark.

She is friendly and earnest despite her constant exhaustion. Her unique struggle with sleepwalking and overwork makes her one of Sumeru’s most relatable and beloved student characters in the game’s lore.

Is Layla Worth Building in Genshin Impact?

Yes — Layla is one of the best shielders available to F2P and low-spending players. Her shield is powerful, her HP scaling is intuitive, and her off-field Cryo application adds value to any team that wants consistent Freeze or Cryo reactions. She requires no specific constellations to perform her job effectively and fits into a huge range of compositions.

She is not Zhongli. His shield is universally stronger and provides resistance shred. But Layla has something he does not — consistent Cryo application that actively contributes to elemental reactions. In Freeze teams, this makes her uniquely effective as a shielder who doubles as a Cryo enabler.

She is now available on the Standard banner, so players will naturally accumulate her constellations over time. C1 in particular is a meaningful early investment that directly strengthens her core function.

If you are building a Freeze-focused roster or simply need a reliable 4-star shielder for any team, Layla is one of the safest and most low-maintenance options in the game. To explore other strong Cryo units who pair well with her, check out the Ganyu guide, the Kamisato Ayaka guide, and the Shenhe guide for team-building inspiration.
